Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Matt from New Orleans:

Larry I’ve been to Helen’s. It’s about an hour NE of downtown Memphis. She’s one of the only female pit masters in the South. Really good BBQ. Looking forward to the show. See you soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Matt from New Orleans:

Had the wrong Helen’s apparently. Oops. There was one in Oakland that had a relationship with The East Bay Dragons who I suspect are the guys in the photo.
Avatar 2:57pm WR:

Testify Rev. Grogan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Matt from New Orleans:

Found a higher resolution version of that photo and “Testify” is blocking the Dragons’ patch on the back of a jacket.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Funky16Corners:

WR! Prepare for liftoff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Matt! I could go for some BBQ if it wsn't as hot as Satan's butthole right now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm Matt from New Orleans:

Hey Larry
Avatar 3:00pm Jeff Ash:

Good afternoon from Green Bay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm doctorjazz:

Hello folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Funky16Corners:

Jeff! Doc!
Avatar 3:02pm StringOFperils:

Angstified, stresstified, and messtified....now hear to be purified.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm Funky16Corners:

String!
Avatar 3:03pm Sem:

All right with the world, Sly's on the job.
Hiya, Larry, and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Matt from New Orleans:

Post Jimi based on the release date I’m guessing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Funky16Corners:

Yes, definitely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Funky16Corners:

I think Curtis was living in Europe at that point, and all of his recordings with Hendrix were from NYC
Avatar 3:08pm Erica:

I'm here. My player is behind lol.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Erica!
Avatar 3:10pm StringOFperils:

Hmmm. Don't remember this Eight Minutes single. Maybe it never made it north of the border.
Avatar 3:10pm Erica:

I already missed 10 minutes of the show without realizing it. I had to reset my Tunein player.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Hello, Larry, WFMU crew and listeners! Sounds good in here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Funky16Corners:

@String - I think it was a local hit in Chicago but that's it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Granny!
Avatar 3:12pm StringOFperils:

I used to listen to WLS every evening back then...it bounced across Lake Superior...my memory's probably full of holes anyway. Ha ha.
Avatar 3:19pm Erica:

So hot today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Listener Bob in PGH:

Hiya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Matt from New Orleans:

Maggot Brain is such a fantastic album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Matt from New Orleans:

No AC Erica?
Avatar 3:24pm Brian in UK:

Hello Larry & roadsters. Raked forks and a V-twin. Two lane black top here we go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Brian! Bob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Funky16Corners:

We are currently suffering without A/C.Broke two weeks ago. They're coming to replace it on Monday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Matt from New Orleans:

Such a different sound than Huey & the Clowns or even his solo stuff not long before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Funky16Corners:

That record is pretty much Eddie Bo. Curley only contributes the spoken intro on the other side
Avatar 3:28pm Erica:

That sucks Larry. Hope you can find ways to cool off so you don't pass out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm Funky16Corners:

We're getting by...slowly....so slowly....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Funky16Corners:

BTW This is the Isley Brothers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm dreamyandseedy:

that funkadelic track is just amazing, their early stuff is so untouchable! and Osmium by Parliament is equally mesmerizing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Funky16Corners:

Hey dreamy!
Avatar 3:36pm StringOFperils:

This stuff resonates. This week was remarkably similar to the years this stuff came out. Social explosions. Glimmers of hope for change. Uncertainty. Frustration. New ideas. Old clampdowns. I'm only Windexing the windowpane now though, not eating it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, I didn't plan it that way, but things sure fell into place (Kind of wish they hadn't)
Avatar 3:38pm StringOFperils:

I hear ya.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Matt from New Orleans:

Years before Bootsy adopted the name
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Funky16Corners:

Which name?
Avatar 3:39pm StringOFperils:

Rubber Band ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Funky16Corners:

Oh OK
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Funky16Corners:

Somebody in New Orleans was trying to get a rubber band dance craze going
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Matt from New Orleans:

Yup rubber band
Swag For Life Member 3:42pm zzz:

this show is so good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Funky16Corners:

The flip of Funky Yeah is Shelley's Rubber Band, the Meters did Rubber Band, and the Eddie Bo one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks zzz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Funky16Corners:

@Matt - There's even an Atlanta 45 from a few years later by a guy named Alley Pat called "Pat's Rubber Band" that references the Meters record
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Matt from New Orleans:

Why not try to jump on the bandwagon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Matt from New Orleans:

It makes more sense when one is a hit but we’ve both seen plenty of examples that weren’t
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, I don't know how much of a bandwagon there was to jump on, but the same thing happened with 'Funky Belly' records, of which there are a couple in New Orleans and Mississippi
Avatar 3:49pm Erica:

Trying to hear your show Larry but that George Floyd funeral is on TV now. All I hear is "every praise".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Funky16Corners:

I'd probably be watching if I wasn't on the air.
Avatar 3:52pm Erica:

Trying to keep politics out of here but different TV channels are airing it.
Avatar 3:54pm Erica:

Just letting you know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Funky16Corners:

Politics are fine. A lot of this music is at least implicitly political. The sound of black power. Time for a comeback.
Avatar 3:57pm WR:

Was wondering about Curley Moore and the Kool Ones and ggle brought me to funky16corners.wordpress.com...
Where my suspicion that is was a NLOA session was confirmed as well as reading a slice from the early record collecting exploits of Rev. Grogan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Funky16Corners:

Old time hockey!
Avatar 3:57pm Sem:

Set the time machine for the heart of the soul.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Funky16Corners:

I like that, Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Funky16Corners:

@WR - Wow! That post is from 13 years ago!
Avatar 3:59pm WR:

NOLA, but you know that's what I meant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Funky16Corners:

I do
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Matt from New Orleans:

Makes sense that George Clinton was one of the writers of ill bet ya
Avatar 4:07pm Brian in UK:

Sem, not a 'Floyd fan but that works.
Avatar 4:09pm WR:

Ya'll do know that the DJ saying "I'm the turntable, the building, the transmitter," etc that Uncle Michael has in his show intro is Shelly Pope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Matt from New Orleans:

In the moment I forgot the Funkadelic original
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Funky16Corners:

@WR - Do you know the source?
Avatar 4:14pm WR:

Also, wanna say that your blog post I linked above warmed my heart to read of someone having such deep and diverse appreciation of Eddie Bo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks! I was lucky enough to be in touch with him before he passed away. I have an autographed pic hanging on the wall. I wish I'd got to meet him but Katrina intruded on that.
  4:18pm CalZone!:

solid show LG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Funky16Corners:

Cal!
Avatar 4:21pm WR:

The Shelly Pope rant? It was something he did so there may be several recordings. Someone that lived in NOLA in the 80s played for me a recording of Pope on the radio, one version of it, in the 80s. I don't know if they still have a copy or if it is the same source as what UM used.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Funky16Corners:

I'll have to ask UM
Avatar 4:24pm Sem:

Stepped out before your comment, BiUK. Reference?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Funky16Corners:

I think Brian was talking about this "Set the time machine for the heart of the soul." referencing Pink Floyd's 'Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun'
Avatar 4:27pm Sem:

OH, is THAT what I stole, altered, and made my own?

The Sixties are but a formless mist to me now.
Avatar 4:28pm Erica:

I remember this Bo Diddly song from another Testify! Show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Funky16Corners:

I'm trying to remember when I played it
Avatar 4:33pm WR:

I was not aware or had forgot about this E Rodney Jones jam. Adds extra resonance since we were just talking about Shelly Pope. Although I don't know if they have anything else in common, besides the profession of radio personality.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Funky16Corners:

E Rodney Jones made some cool records
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Doug Schulkind:

Finally getting to tune in. I need a Testiferone infusion bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Funky16Corners:

He's even got one that's a Northern Soul fave (R&B Time)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Doug!
Avatar 4:35pm WR:

This Mel Brown 45 record sounds more interesting than I remember. I think I still have the Impulse LP of the same title.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Funky16Corners:

I remember picking up the 45, expecting some funky soul jazz and being stunned at how weird it was. If I had more time I'd play the whole thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm dreamyandseedy:

this was always one of my fave jimi songs!!!! i love his singing
Avatar 4:37pm still b/p:

Someone told me today there are Floyd tribute bands out there that replicate the sound of the music exactly. I surely had my years of enjoying me some Pink, but I'd have no interest in attending such a performance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Funky16Corners:

This is such an amazing album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Funky16Corners:

Hey sbp! There are a couple of Floyd copy bands that tour around. Note for note.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Listener Bob in PGH:

I think one of them is from Australia
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Funky16Corners:

I think that's the one that was on PBS
Avatar 4:42pm WR:

s b/p there are two aspects of bands touring playing Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason put together a band that toured and played mostly music from the first two albums. Then there are some that are fans, one from Australia that has gotten international attention.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Funky16Corners:

I'd love to hear that Nick Mason configuration!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Listener Bob in PGH:

Yep, PBS pandering to imagined Boomer tastes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm dreamyandseedy:

YES i can't even put into words how this song makes me feel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Funky16Corners:

It's a good one!
Avatar 4:48pm StringOFperils:

This joint is more the territory of the Floyd's original namesakes anyway. (Pink Anderson and Floyd Council)
Avatar 4:48pm Sem:

That's some deli, that Funkadelic. Lovin' all the spins and the love that got them here. See you next time, Larry, and all.
Avatar 4:49pm Brian in UK:

Larry, thanks for the clarification at 4:25.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Funky16Corners:

Bye Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Doug Schulkind:

Nothing absolutely screams soul like a glockenspiel!
Avatar 4:50pm Erica:

The original version of Strawberry Letter 23.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Funky16Corners:

Funkenspeil!
Avatar 4:51pm WR:

For the Nick Mason band, if you are interesting ROIO audience recordings Larry I have several. As an aside I must lament that I was too narrow minded back in the day when I didn't keep my Rotary Connection LPs. PS: this set is super sanctified a delic. Wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm doctorjazz:

Love that Shuggie Otis!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Matt from New Orleans:

Thanks Larry
Avatar 4:51pm still b/p:

Confining the Floyd setlist to first couple of albums would narrow down the interest substantially, I'd think. And maybe for the better, as far as those fans might be concerned. Whole different audience from what a Moon/Wish/Animals party would draw, for instance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Larry!
Avatar 4:52pm WR:

Hope your med thing goes smoothly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Cal Zone!:

Love your show Larry. Missed too many parts. Will check the archive later. Good luck with the docs!
Avatar 4:55pm StringOFfunkenspiel:

Very cool show Larry. Thanks a lot!
Avatar 4:56pm Jeff Ash:

Thanks, Larry!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks everyone!
Avatar 4:56pm Erica:

Thanks for the show Larry. I don't know about tomorrow's fill in show though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Lizardner Dave 2:

Thanks for a great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Funky16Corners:
