A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Snoochie - The mint plant is really going for it now, so I'm hoping to do something with that at some stage. I dug out a small, dead woody shrub the other day and it was like a fight to death. @Handy, Good points. I can only imagine how odd it would feel to be in a crowd, given the current tension, and distancing even from our last memories and experiences of being physically close to others, not to mention how odd it feels to wear a bra, make-up, jewelry, or shoes. I might slightly embellish for the sake of reinforcing the point.

I dont mean to over simplify or get political on here (seriously this is my happy place). But how could you possibly put an end to police departments? Who is going to protect people, say in poor neighborhoods, where violence is a problem? Especially when the right to bear arms is also simultaneously talked about being taken away.

We have seen recently how much destruction can be caused to both public and private businesses/buildings, (I in no way mean to confuse the people rioting with protestors either). Could you imagine if there were no police to stop some of what has been going on? Meanwhile a store owner also cant defend himself from someone who may be breaking in with a gun pointed at him?

I read the Adolph Reed Jr. article and have many criticisms of it. Sure, class is a factor too. But addressing racism is not some kind of distraction, it's vital. Nobody is "demanding ritual declarations that black lives matter". It's the name of a movement, like "Me too". If you don't want to use that phrase, don't use it. The article is full of weird straw-man arguments and cherry-picking of statistics. And his dismissal of Ta-Nehisi Coates for not finishing college is inexecusable, a real cheap shot. Could go on but I'll stop here.

@JakeGould There was a New Yorker article about that a short while back. You can actually create a virtual bookstore with it. I think they talked about one that was named something like "The Bookshop At The End Of The World"
  11:37am
JakeGould:

“But how could you possibly put an end to police departments?” Our very own Sam Segal explains it well and eloquently on his playlist from last night:

www.wfmu.org...

“I think the idea of police abolition is that we gradually divest from police, jails, and prisons, and use that money to invest in social services, public infrastructure, and other resources that keep people safe without the involvement of the carceral state. It isn't something that can happen overnight, but I think there is an overwhelming amount of evidence that policing is not an effective strategy for reducing "crime." This interview, and the book "The End of Policing," which it references are good placed to learn more about the concept of police abolition.”

“For instance, in a society that doesn't disproportionately invest its resources in police, prisons, and the military, we could provide everyone with housing, health care, education, food, and meaningful work. In that kind of society, I suspect that the incidence of car theft and other property crime would decrease significantly, thereby decreasing the need for a police force to investigate these crimes. This kind of dynamic would snowball over the course of time, leading to the eventual abolition of policing as we know it.”

JakeGould, I hear that, and it all sounds very nice and utopian. But idk it seems a little overly hopeful that people wont do the wrong thing when the opportunity is presented to them.

"In that kind of society, I suspect that the incidence of car theft and other property crime would decrease significantly" is a HUGE hypothetical to destroy a society over. People of all races, ethnicity and upbringings commit crimes. How many college kids get too drunk and do stupid things? They have opportunities. I mean Donald Trump is rich and all, but he is still greedy and would take from people when he can right?

JakeGould:

@Snoochienucci: The general idea is that defunding the police and then investing money in current — and even new — social support systems and changing the role of the police in many places such as the U.S. can change things.

You know in Japan, police are seen more as a community service and if/when violence happens special officers within the department are the ones that engage the problem?

Deconstruct what the police does and reconstruct it into something new.

Heck, one can do the same with fire departments: You know how many fire department calls have utterly nothing to do with fires and property but rather heath care with people? Tons! Why does the FDNY have healthcare in their service portfolio? Because you need a pumper truck to arrive if someone breaks a leg?

Why are old structures cobbled with tasks that are not their core competency?

And to even better understand it look at the different roles U.S. Marshalls, the National Guard, FBI and CIA and such have. They are all ultimately authorities with some kind of weapon right? But none of these groups murder people for selling loose cigarettes or supposedly passing counterfeit $20 bills.

Only police departments are endlessly making “mistakes” that kill people so consistently like this.
Avatar 11:48am
Snoochienucci:

@Jake i agree with that last statement completely. Im not saying im against reform in any way. Hell, I have been profiled and "processed" by police myself. But to say things like "abolish police", not saying that is your opinion, is just a ridiculous over simplification

@Snoochi: I would agree a position advocating for immediate abolishment of all law enforcement with absolutely no plan for day-after effects is a pie-in-the-sky argument. But, tacking on to Jake here, there are two parallel and interrelated pathways to reform I've seen discussed: (1) more immediate efforts to "abolish," streamline or completely restructure current department structures with redesigned forces incorporating civilian review and an independent death/force review process baked into the reformed system (e.g., disband redundant forces + import genuine CCRBs directly into PD structure); and (2) a longer term redistribution of state resources to achieve the gradual societal change outlined by Sam Segal and Jake.

YETI BOB: I hear you. Intentionally or not, Reed is being provocative. But I think it's worth noting that the comment about Coates was in a footnote excursus rant about anti-racist ad hominem argument. Moreover, Reed isn't suggesting race isn't a "factor." He's pointing out that you can't *explain* the incidence of violence purely in terms of race. Zimring also relies on statistics to make his argument, and in much greater detail. Simply put, it's complicated, and race is but one factor. (Zimring also proposes ways to adjust the culture of policing that are at least plausibly practical.)

You say “Abolish Police” and that sends a strong message to everyone including the police who — let’s face it — have very secure financial plans for life thanks to their jobs.

Once you are in a career service job like that you will never feel financial pain even if you murder someone. That is one hell of a gig because even U.S. military don’t have anything like that.
