Listener comments!

  9:03pm JakeGould:

Hey JJ! So the sound effects were added as a bed? Because this is very good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm jj.:

doing a live mix, like normal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm listener 126464:

Hi Jesse, hi Jake.
  9:06pm Sally:

Glad you're here Jesse! It's the third night of curfew in Los Angeles. "New future" sounds good. This Brother Ah is soothing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm jj.:

that is, sort of, mixing a few layers of sound together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Yes:

hey all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm jj.:

hi everybody! really happy to be here hanging tonight. this is hopefully the last time i'll ever ask this, but: i can't really look at social media while doing this. if there are outside world updates you feel worth sharing, please share.
Avatar 9:12pm John Purcell:

Rough fucking week. Happy to be here for the next few hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm Devin B.:

RIP Brother Ah.
  9:15pm ?:

The only real info I'm getting is from the activists and organizations who are also out there cooperatively working on effecting change in this world. The news media is not doing this moment justice...
  9:15pm JakeGould:

@jj: Well, you know about the curfew in NYC? 11pm to 5am thanks to trustafarian white kids looting stores in SoHo hours after peaceful protest? Also NYPD is doubling the patrol size from 4,000 to 8,000 and they are all on 12 hour (!!!) shifts. And if somehow this does not work, Cuomo has vowed to send the National Guard to NYC.

And hyperlocal to the East Village — which I know you know — this video of a local resident flipping out on rioters is everything as the kids say. Filmed on 2nd Avenue near 7th near the theater that shows “Stomp” at. www.instagram.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm jj.:

yup, know about the curfew for sure, was alerted on my cell phone.
  9:17pm JakeGould:

Drumpf also had protestors in D.C. tear-gassed so he could walk to a local boarded up church and pose for photos with an upside down bible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm jj.:

to be clear, my request pertains to breaking news currently happening, not the past few hours. things that may've happened since i got on the air.
Avatar 9:18pm Richy4619:

we got you, JJ! keep focused = ))
  9:20pm Sally:

Yeah, we got you JJ!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm jj.:

and i'd be happier if there were no updates at all, but just sayin'. also @jakegould & @sally & @richy4619 & anybody else, thanks for listening. nice to have some company.
  9:23pm JakeGould:

@jj. Then your wish is granted! No new horrors to report.

Where is that Central Parl Mandarin duck tho?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm jj.:

hopefully teaming up with the murder hornets & they'll swoop in during the next reel & fix some shit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm Mungerphut:

third night of curfews in Philly, 6 pm tonight and last night.
  9:27pm otto:

@jj ... been listening to WFMU for a just a few years now. just "got round" to checking out your show ... this is my fourth tune-in with you via Adirondack internet. I'm hooked - to say the least. Phamily affair.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm mariano:

Hey jj and crew, everyone.
  9:29pm JakeGould:

Here’s Elmo outside of a Staples in Philly. cdn.vox-cdn.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm jj.:

very glad you found your way here, @otto!
  9:35pm Sally:

@Jake, FYI-CNN just reported that the Bishop of Washington Diocese was "outraged" by that Drumpf photo-op. It was at a church in one of her diocese, and she said Drumpf's message and actions were "antithetical" to Jesus' teachings. She added the protestors "are rightfully demanding an end to 400 years of systemic racism and white supremacy in our country." Wow..
  9:36pm h:

hi, I understand and that we are living in unprecedented times and my petty concern here is of absolutely no consequence. That being said I was really looking forward to getting my Hits From the Cloud v.5 from the pledge drive to, you know, help me and my family get through these difficult and sometimes tedious times. Is that not happening until after we get a vaccine?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Mungerphut:

Swag For Life Member 10:25pm Somm Ben:

No curfew in Jersey City I'm aware of. Its been peaceful in Bergen Lafayette as far as I know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm McGroovey:

I got a text alert (in NJ) about the NYC curfew, but nothing about one in my area. For whatever that means.
Swag For Life Member 10:25pm Somm Ben:

Peaceful in Newark as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm melinda:

No curfew in Portland ME. We're running wild in the streets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm Scott Williams:

No curfew in JC, everything's been peaceful. jj, thanks for the MC5 shout!
  10:29pm ignatatus666:

A curfew in Brooklyn is impossible. I was there for the last one . East NY was business as usual aside from stores. The cops don’t want to deal with Van Siclen or the projects as it is and they ignore the Orthodox/Hasidic communities.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm Scott Williams:

Sounds like Shirley's been listening to David Tibet/Current 93
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm melinda:

Does curfew mean you can't leave your home after hours? That would be bonkers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm listener 126464:

Happy to say it looks like rally/march in Asbury Park stayed civil. Curfew was set for 8 but police didn't enforce. They probably all went for pizza at TJ's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm Mungerphut:

Philly police are arresting people violating curfew in certain neighborhoods and the National Guard is patrolling Center City. Curfew is 6 pm and the protest at the museum broke up around 5
  10:50pm JakeGould:

Well, looks like there’s looting and fires being set on Fordham Road in the Bronx. The curfew won’t stop anything but give the police a new reason to arrest people.

So the scariest part of this to me is the NYPD doubling patrol size from 4,000 to 8,000 with no clear indication when that will stop. Imagine being stopped by a tired or amped up cop that is pulling a full 12 hours as a shift. It’s like this “solutions” will only make things worse.

@melinda: You stay home or… Something. Either you are given a summons or maybe locked up. Who knows… Literally; no clear guidance on how that would work if you are out after 11:00pm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Yes:

pretty track
  10:51pm devlawn:

yes melinda.

can't be outside in a public place for any reason.
  10:52pm JakeGould:

The fireworks behind the music are comforting. I’m wistful for nice and beautiful explosions.
  10:53pm devlawn:

last night in culver city california they announced a curfew with 30 minutes notice, so if you were 35 minutes from home you were breaking the law.
  10:56pm devlawn:

4pm. not really night i suppose.
  10:57pm JakeGould:

And apparently Macy’s in Herald Square is being looted, but the place is all boarded up and all pics and vids just show rioters just bouncing around or trash fires in the street.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm jj.:

macy's? yikes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Mungerphut:

All local police scanners are off line too, so it is hard to figure out what is going on
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm melinda:

Bonkers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm jj.:

eesh. ominous. to be fair, i guess people were jamming scanners in some cities with "fuck the police" + "chocolate rain" + such.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Dan Bodah mentioned the "Chocolate Rain" prank on Vocal Fry earlier to great effect.
  11:04pm JakeGould:

Remember: There were peaceful protests yesterday and today in Brooklyn and Union Square. And that stuff ended at around 5-6:00pm.

Whatever is happening in the Bronx and in Herald Square is not a protest. It’s rioting and looting happening hours later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm jj.:

yes, i marched yesterday in my neighborhood after police helicopters alerted me to the existence of a march, and it was very peaceful except for the hovering police helicopters.
  11:06pm JakeGould:

Chicago PD got to listen to “Chocolate Rain”: www.vice.com...

As well as NWA: consequenceofsound.net...
Swag For Life Member 11:07pm Somm Ben:

Someone better be handing out voter registrations at all these demonstrations.
  11:07pm JakeGould:

And whoever smashed the window of B&H Dairy on Second Avenue should be shamed for an hour by old Yentas who survived pogroms and the Holocaust.
Avatar 11:08pm Richy4619:

I like this song but Heroin sucks!
  11:09pm JakeGould:

@jj.: Well I said the protestors wear peaceful. The police that greatly outnumbered them? Ehhh…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm jj.:

wtf??? somebody smashed in the window of b&h? that's bullshit. my dad used to take me there when i was a kid.
Avatar 11:10pm Richy4619:

I marched yesterday in San Francisco. I had choice words with the man. This moment is a disgrace. Start over!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm ParUbi:

This is great! (the current track)
Avatar 11:12pm Richy4619:

I am physically uncomfortable with this continued flex of ego on display by a maniac narcissist neo-nazi president. the streets are his sideshow to remind you He's most important!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm Crudbringer:

OMG this Sun Ra! (busily constructs pyramids from mashed potatoes and toothpaste)
  11:13pm JakeGould:

@jj.: That video I posted on Instragram @9:15? The young black woman ripping the white male rioters a new one was doing so right across the street from B&H.

It might sound like I am forcing a division between protestors and rioters but I have no need to force it: The protests organized by blacks have been peaceful and the majority of the looting and mayhem in the East Village and SoHo is being caused by teenage and college aged white guys.

Of course they smashed the window to B&H… What blowback will those brats ever feel?
Avatar 11:15pm Richy4619:

yeah yeah ok still don't snitch ok don't profile thanks
  11:16pm Sally:

@Jake, thanks for posting that video. I listened to the woman and she was incredibly strong, wise, and moving.
Avatar 11:16pm Richy4619:

Sun RA WEST PHILADELPHIA ppl whats uppp
  11:17pm Sally:

Yes, SUN fucking RA
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm McGroovey:

This is sure foot-tappin' Sun Ra. And I mean that as a compliment. Space is the place.
Avatar 11:19pm Richy4619:

Space is a safe place too dammit
  11:20pm JakeGould:

@Richy4619: Snitching? Profiling? You might want to tell that to the people organizing protests who are very clear on telling white protestors who show up how to behave. They are “profiling” to protect their own communities.
  11:20pm greatb:

Good evening, all. Space remains the place!
  11:22pm greatb:

the only thing that outpaces world events is Sun Ra reissues, and I am grateful for that
  11:23pm JakeGould:

This funeral dance is a positive mood.
Avatar 11:25pm Richy4619:

it does no good to spread the info now that a profile of any sort was doing so and so ESPECIALLY if any of it was illegal fool
Swag For Life Member 11:25pm zzz:

ohhhh loooove bitter funeral beer band one of my favorite ecm releases. hadn’t heard this ‘82 live date
Avatar 11:26pm Richy4619:

and that's on you to do something about THEN or do something about it
Avatar 11:28pm Richy4619:

webspace should be a safe place too. sorry all. i'm exhausted by all this news. thank you Jesse
  11:29pm JakeGould:

@Richy4619: Haha! Whatever. White guys will not suffer consequences for rioting and looting the same way black people and communities will. Watch this video. She’s “profiling” because it’s here community being destroyed. www.instagram.com...
  11:29pm Sally:

@Richy did you watch the video and listen to what the woman said? I don't understand what you're saying.
Avatar 11:30pm Richy4619:

Jake I agree no doubt man I'm just a little more free ok Im on the streets too
  11:31pm Sally:

Take it easy Richy...we're all in this together.
Avatar 11:34pm John Purcell:

Folks I've been at the protests and trust me--Black people are upset enough to loot and fuck shit up. Time to really hear them.
Avatar 11:34pm Richy4619:

Uh yeah guys Idk why you think I don't understand. I'm a peaceful protestor. What you don't understand possibly could be that it serves no good to project blame on our weaker sides
Avatar 11:36pm Richy4619:

We are in this together! Some of us are more upset than you or I could understand!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm RMR:

Probably way off topic, but thanks for Szabó and Sun Ra and this sweet Funeral Dance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm McGroovey:

Everything but the music is off-topic, really. That's not to say that off-topic is bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm RMR:

No, of course not. Well said.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm jj.:

topics are illusory, too. it's all one topic, though i'm fine with any of this conversation.
  11:40pm Sally:

Yes, that's what the woman was trying to say Richy. I think we're all just having a miscommunication. Peace
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm RMR:

Poor choice of words on my part, but, yes, thanks for the deep dive, as always.
  11:42pm JakeGould:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm jj.:

and glad you're digging @RMR! the szabo i learned from my dad's collection.

So much better than Felder or Hagar.

@jj.: Do you have any fond food memories from B&H?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm RMR:

I have been on a binge of his of late, so that was timely. Your dad is beyond cool, too.
  11:47pm JakeGould:

And… De Blasio just announced we get another curfew tomorrow… But this one happens at 8:00pm!

www.nytimes.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm jj.:

hm, haven't thought about the food itself at B&H in a while, probably the pancakes?
  11:51pm JakeGould:

Sounds good. I like their matzoh ball soup but think they have “brunchified” their blintzes too much; it’s like a big crepe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm RMR:

Sunset Blvd. never sounded so good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm jj.:

it's been 25+ years since i've been there, but definitely feel like i should return when i can.
  11:54pm JakeGould:

Some quotes from the New York Times piece; from what I am reading protestors at a later protest in Union Square walked up 14th Street, headed up 5th Avenue and starting smashing windows of places like Aldo and Nike in the 20s and then just kept on moving up.

***

“That’s not what this is about!” a young woman who was red in the face shouted over and over again.

***

“They’re not with us!” shouted Steevo Anthony, 33, a supervisor at Whole Foods from Brooklyn, as he moved away from the looting. “Keep walking!”

Trembling with emotion, he added: “It’s giving a bad name to us people who are out here trying to do the right thing, the people who walked away.”
Avatar 12:00am craplivion:

dont know why.that bigstar song remunded me of radiohead
