Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Threemoons:

So yeah, last night, a friend of mine who was born and raised in SoHo NYC took pix of looters in SoHo. Mostly White kids; caused a hell of a lot of damage. Dior, Sonos, Diesel, every high end shop was thoroughly worked over. Luckily nobody stopped him from taking pix; OTOH he is a pro photographer and had a long lens. He was also able to set up a tripod on his roof and shoot from there.

What a treat to hear this! Bette Davis Eyes was on the first mix tape I ever made, in 4th grade.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Mark Hurst:

@lukavino I think I made the same mistake back in the day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am p20:

that synth-snare ... OMG
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am David (in London):

@pantz - That's a favourite of mine too. Ferry running through the jungle in his dinner jacket and huge tie-on chin. "But you don't look anything like Bryan Ferry" "Yeah, what's your point?"
  9:38am the cl@m digger:

Betty Davis eyes will forever bring me back to watching historical music video countdowns on vh1

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am The Oscar:

@p20 I'd pay to see a version of Snow White with Bogie and Bette.
Avatar 9:42am mary from lisbon:

Hey Joe, nice to hear you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Listener Bob in PGH:

@holland oats - funny, that's the lyric I've always heard too! Kim Carnes is really into glue!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am pantz:

@David (In London) Love how the story morphs into The Jungle Book too.
  9:43am JakeGould:

@Threemoons: Getting a “Page Not Found” on those links — Facebook privacy settings — but I trust the pics are good.

And I was at a protest yesterday at Barclays Center where the crowd was mixed, the vibes were sad, respectful and peaceful and where it was clear — from signs and actions — if you are white you should be there to support and be a true ally that holds space. This was in the afternoon.

These looters in SoHo are clearly opportunists to me. They’re jerks because honestly I could care less about merch being stolen but I care about their actions blowing back on the black community.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am p20:

Batty, Silvery, Moony, Roxy, Bogie, Bette, and Joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am The Oscar:

Oh my god, I can't believe I never decoded what 2HB means.
  9:45am JakeGould:

Bogart was indeed tough without a gun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am p20:

@TheOscar: It's also a type of pencil.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Gord:

@Joe McG — If you haven't read it already, check out the Bogart bio by Lax and Sperber. Balanced and quite good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Brian in UK:

Thought that Bryan Ferry song was about a pencil.

Nulsh, good depth of sound. Will check it under water when the swimming pool is finished.
  9:48am JakeGould:

@lukavino: My favorite WFMU story related to not knowing the gender of the artist is Sheila B. thinking that the “Bee Gees” were women — based on singing style — and then being stunned to hear they are all men… Big hair men…

I still can’t fully absorb the idea that Rick Astley is a thin white guy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am p20:

Sterntaler = "Star money" - a fairy tale about stars falling from the sky and turning into gold coins which reward a poor child. Falls under fairy tale type 779, "Divine Rewards and Punishements" (yes, there's really a classification system)
  9:49am pomadethesun:

I am a fan
  9:49am JakeGould:

Avatar 9:51am Jim Price:

Joe, we often talked film noir before the skeleton lock down. Have you seen the Betty Davis film Marked Woman?
  9:52am Bill W:

I remember Bette Davis bringing a lawn jockey onto a Letterman set in the early '80s... Never read a full-length Bogart bio, but his friendship w/ Peter Lorre is fascinatingly etched in the Lorre bio THE LOST ONE. They both loved taking the piss out of Jack Warner... In Lorre's last years he said "I miss him every day."
Avatar 9:53am Joe McG:

@Trista: You are more of an exclamation mark to me! @Jim: Yes, I love "Marked Woman," Jim! @Bill W: I haven't read that, want to!
  9:53am Mike tp:

@Mike: Sure, Mike! I thank Mary Lattimore's mom and dad for Mary Lattimore. She's the best. @Irene: You bet! Glad you're back.
  9:57am JakeGould:

@Mark: Decent photo. What’s of more interest to me is Jeremiah Moss’s other tweets and retweets highlighting who the rioters are. Like this one from a veteran NYC reporter: “The looting in SoHo Is quite an elaborate scheme. it’s a complicated web of cars with out-of-state plates, the use of Revel scooters, CitiBikeNYC’s and Uber’s to get away. But most that i’ve observed have been waking away with the goods in hand past cops.” twitter.com...

And then this video of protestors in Washington, D.C. grabbing instigator and hand him over to the police: ‘Peaceful Protestors grab an agitator destroying property and they “TAKE HIS ASS!” To the police!” twitter.com...

I fully realize that WFMU has a very respected “no politics” rule for DJs and such. And commenters try to abide by this as well.

But seeing white people live action role play mayhem at the expense of the suffering of black people is sickening.

Wonder if the CitiFike, Uber and Revel geolocation data will be grabbed to out these looters?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am pantz:

@Irene Welcome back, Irene! You've been missed.

  10:01am JakeGould:

@AmiAd: Belated happy birthday wishes! Take care of yourself and one cool…
Avatar 10:02am Michael Shelley:

Jake - agree 100%, things are sickening - but to clarify: except for FCC type rules, there are no rules for WFMU dj about what they may or may not say. No guidelines. The entire topic has never once been discussed as log as I've been on air. DJs are free talk about any subject.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am tom from Glasgow:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am pantz:

@Joe I did not give you permission to read my diary on air!
Avatar 10:08am Joe McG:

You folks are free to talk about anything you want on the comments board, by the way. I don't mind. @pantz: But it's so juicy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Webhamster Henry:

WFMU DJs don't talk about the news because its mostly a distraction from the music. Sometimes (like Clay playing What's Going On and his own song this morning) , it is relevant to the times we're living in.
  10:10am JakeGould:

Also, one last word on this: I urge anyone who is confused about the looting in SoHo to read Jeremiah Moss’ recent tweets. He’s passionate about NYC, loathes gentrifiers, documents the NYC that is fading away and general has no sympathy for the high-end mall SoHo has become… And yet he is posting valid accounts from multiple sources outing the fact the SoHo looters are not from NYC, are not there to protest a murder or even economic injustice. They are simply pure opportunists unassociated with any of the real protests: twitter.com...

@JoeMcG: Stay beige!
Avatar 10:10am holland oats:

news doesn't archive well neither
Avatar 10:11am Joe McG:

  10:11am JakeGould:

@HollandOats: Stop belittling my evergreen Spiro Agnew jokes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am David (in London):

Thanks Joe, in that case I intend to discourse at length about marigolds, regression coefficients, the role of family firms in British business 1780 to 1900, the Wimple Winch and 'Fruit jam - Is it overrated?'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Andrew_in_WI:

Patiently waiting for that CD, and my other swag.

Fruit jam is nice, but marmalade is nicer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Brian in UK:

I like to think of WFMU as a musical sanctuary, with what is occuring the occasional comment is understandable. There is enough coverage elsewhere if you want news.
Avatar 10:14am holland oats:

The Invasion of the Body Snatchers remake is great. The last scene is one for the ages. I just recently saw the original which is also great in a completely different way. The remake does all that a remake should: updating and transforming the original by placing it in an urban setting.

The original Body Snatchers was either about 50s conformity of the threat of communism, depending on how you read it. Perhaps, the remake could be read as representing suburban paranoia about urban depravity. The score for the remake is quite experimental as well.

  10:53am Dean:

My favorite musical is probably Sweeney Todd. Not a huge musical fan, but I love old recordings from early 20th century stage.
  10:53am JakeGould:

In the case of old Hollywood musicals, I think they are best seen in a large group in a theater; something we sadly now cannot do.

One of the most profound childhood experiences I ever had was being taken with my parents when I was 11 years old to go see “Fiddler on the Roof” on Kings Highway in the 1970s.

I was the literal only person under the age of 60 there. And the movie bored me at the time. But then when “Sunrise, Sunset” comes on suddenly a theater filled with elderly Jews — many victims of World War II violence and prior — just sings loudly in harmony.

You can’t get that experience streaming.

Avatar 10:56am Joe McG:
