Listener comments!

  9:04pm Listener Robert:

Does it feel like Sunday morning yet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Works for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm mariano:

Hey Nate (if you're on the Accu) K and Scott and everyone. I feel your frustration Scott, but no reason for apologies, all of you are doing such a heroic job of keeping the music playing 24/7!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm mariano:

"Every honest man must live hell" - wow, what a line.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

That's right.
Avatar 9:06pm WR:

Wait, first you say issue with the internet but then comment about auto-updates. You make me feel like I'm still at work and compliance requires a root cause analysis and what is being implemented to be sure it doesn't happen again. Burn It Down!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm ultradamno:

Back when the Spin Age was the lead in...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm McGroovey:

I was just thinking about Thomas Jefferson S.A., so this is a nice coincidence. I was thinking about how this is the only TJSA album I have, and about how I haven't pulled it out and listened to it in ages, and about how I should pull it out, and about how I should look for more stuff my them. That's what I was thinking about. And I think about other things, also, all the time. But that's what I was thinking about when I was thinking about TJSA. THE END.
Avatar 9:08pm JakeGould:

Happy Twosday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm spodiodi:

hey Nate and Scott: what my man mariano said!
hola mariano, RRN63, WR, ultradamno, all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm mariano:

"You say the internet, I say auto-update/internet, update, update, internet/Let's burn the whole thing down."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Handy Haversack:

We're here. We're burning stuff (presumably It) down!
  9:09pm chaos_in_LA_LA:

Any show that open with two tjsa tracks is pretty good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm ultradamno:

Hiya Spodiodi

By "this album", I meant "Bait and Switch".

And this encore show dates back to July 2017: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Scott Williams:

YES! LET'S BURN DOWN THE INTERNET! there is at least some enjoyable irony in all of this
  9:11pm otto:

psick!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm McGroovey:

Computers suck. I mean that as un-ironically as possible, which is totally ironic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm Handy Haversack:

I know I spell "gasoline" SCOTCHAOST NATE WILKILIAMS.

But I have never passed a spelling test.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

FMA got an Archive or two of bitchen schizzle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm McGroovey:

Oh, no. We're about to fall into an irony loop. Well, maybe I am, at least.

Save yourselves. Save yourselves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm ultradamno:

I know it was a Sunday back then because Fred was with us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

FMU I mean. I'd like to Support a vowel...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Chop Scott:

Nate K & Scott W.--Cheers anyway!! My radio will still be on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Burned it down!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm ultradamno:

Well, that has more to do with it being the morning, but they go hand in hand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hullo Sunday fred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Nate K.:

I truly gave it the all college try, folks. But, alas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm McGroovey:

I love how well Ron House can't sing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Nate K.:

This show is amazing, though. From my 6:00 a.m. days, featuring music chosen by Ron House from his personal stash. Ron was live in the studio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Punk aesthetic w/ SmartPop sensibility. Dig it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Nate K.:

I miss Fred. He was very supportive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm Nate K.:

Ha, ha. This is weird. I did the intro differently back then . . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm Nate K.:

That said, every one of you is a rock!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

What's the thing w/ Fred? Can't make evening - or worse ??...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm ultradamno:

French timing. He shows up sometimes in the second half of Dot Dash
Avatar 9:24pm JakeGould:

@RR63: Fred is a wimp. It’s 3:24am in Paris right now and he can’t even stay up to listen to this show. What wimp!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm McGroovey:

Oh, it's kind of a double-nested show situation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh good. I only get online sitting OUTSIDE the Library just now - wondered if I missed bad news...
Avatar 9:26pm JakeGould:

“French Timing?” What is that? The rhythm method as practices in France?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm McGroovey:

No bad news. Just bad internet access for doing a new show.
  9:27pm Listener Robert:

Why is the playlist being assembled in real time instead of using the old playlist?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

We would confuse our Past Selves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Handy Haversack:

Old playlist got burned down.
Avatar 9:28pm JakeGould:

@ListeneRobert: Ghosts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm McGroovey:

Nate is here, so I suppose he's doing the playlist now himself. He doesn't have to mess around playing records, after all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Nate K.:

@Listener Robert, because as your DJ, I am still here hanging out!
Avatar 9:29pm JakeGould:

Anyone else in NYC get a note from Spectrum in NYC warning customers of an outage tonight between 12:00am and 6:00am? Had service with them for 7+ years and never got a “heads up” note. Just an outage.
  9:29pm Listener Robert:

But if you put the archived playlist page in the left frame, then we could argue with the old comments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Nate K.:

Hahaha. That's a thought.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Handy Haversack:

"Even Lower Manhattan" is genius-level titling. One of my fake books of poetry (author: Hoyt Schermerhorn) is _Even Bleeker Street_.
Avatar 9:34pm JakeGould:

@Handy: Was it you who said on some playlist you just started watching “The Sopranos?”
  9:35pm Listener Robert:

The comments from 6:55 to 7:03, about states shutting down, look spookily appropriate to the current scene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Doug in JC:

Really digging this track. Suggested follow up: Tomorrow's Sunlight by Estes Brothers. Just a thought
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Handy Haversack:

No, Jake, we have been kicking around the idea of rewatching when the inevitable Content Gap comes (and The Wire), but so far have not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Doug in JC:

Perfect. Just perfect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Punk goes back to the 1960s. If not - forever...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm Handy Haversack:

That was a GREAT request, Doug. Since Nate honored it, you should probably go ahead and quintuple your S4L level!
Avatar 9:38pm spacecowboy:

nice!
Avatar 9:38pm JakeGould:

@Handy: Okay… I ask because I am 1/2 way through James Cagney’s “White Heat” and the relationship between Tony Soprano and his mom is straight out of that film… And that film is good on it’s own anyway.
Avatar 9:39pm spacecowboy:

what is this coolness
  9:40pm John L:

I like the element of surprise. I don't wanna know (but I hope) if he's gonna play Gibson Bros. or Scrawl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm Handy Haversack:

Oh, wow, yeah, JakeGould -- good call! Wow, I have not watched that movie in ... ~25 years? But I remember: totally.
Avatar 9:40pm spacecowboy:

thid is sweeet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm Doug in JC:

Requests are like cigarettes. You can have one. Then it's time to get your own
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Nate K.:

@SpaceCowboys, Kansas City Jammers. Xtian action.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm ultradamno:

I love this Kansas City timing.
Avatar 9:42pm spacecowboy:

@nate---- nice
  9:42pm Matt Warwick:

Happy 9:42 everyone!
Avatar 9:42pm JakeGould:

@Handy: I have been rewatching some classics, but mainly Cagney and Bogart films and wow… “The Big Sleep” is a great film and “White Heat” is really a classic.

And that all makes me want to rewatch “L.A. Confidential” at some point this quarantine… Hah! I have a time period for this stuff.
Avatar 9:42pm Joe B:

Hey Nate and everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Handy Haversack:

9:42!!! Hour of the BEST!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm ultradamno:

If you want it boiled extra hard try Killer Joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm mariano:

Those comments are like sooo 9:42.
Avatar 9:44pm JakeGould:

Oh an on this day in 1897… Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” was published.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm ultradamno:

It's true, move on to 9:46 already.
Avatar 9:45pm JakeGould:

Abd “Bram” is short for “Abraham” because “Abe Stoker’s ‘Dracula’” sounds like a brand of oatmeal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm Nate K.:

Hey, Joe. Welcome to the rerun. : /
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm Handy Haversack:

Agreed, Jake. I have watched L.A. Confidential not too long ago -- that is a good movie. That cycle of books is all worth reading, too.

Oh, Mariano. You're a 9:44 man in a 9:42 world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm ultradamno:

De Palma's Black Dahlia movie, not so great. As I recall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Handy Haversack:

(Also, hi, Joe B! Always great to "see" you! If you haven't noticed, both Past and Future Nates are Burning It absolutely the hell Down!)
Avatar 9:47pm JakeGould:

@Handy: “L.A. Confidential” one of those modern classic films where it is truly re-watchable. “Black Dahlia” was a crappy film.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm mariano:

I don't think anyone's ever done the Black Dahlia story justice. There was "True Confessions" with De Niro and Duval from the early 80s but that was only loosely based on the story.
Avatar 9:52pm JakeGould:

@mariano: Yeah, but the source material was different in that film versus that DeNiro film.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm Handy Haversack:

I don' think I have ever seen the Black Dahlia movie, actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

This is one delicious leftover.
  9:55pm Listener Robert:

What's this I hear about New Jersey and Maine re-opening their parks to celebrate Memorial Day? Or are they staying shut?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm mariano:

Ah, ok Jake. Been so long since I've seen True Confessions, wondering now how it's held up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm ParUbi:

hey everyone
  9:57pm otto:

i'm loving this!!!!
Avatar 9:57pm JakeGould:

They are both about the Black Dahlia murders; by the James Ellroy book is the source for the crappy DePalma film.

@Handy: You ever watch a film and it all seems too be a first draft/cut and something that could be good with a wee bit more work? That’s what the film feels like.
  9:58pm otto:

song. and also show, always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, ParUbi (didn't get a chance to say hi during CC's SAB).

Yeah, Jake, I know exactly what you mean.
Avatar 9:58pm JakeGould:

@ListenerRobert: You mean yesterday?
  10:00pm Listener Robert:

No, the traditional Decoration Day Memorial Day, May 30. The one that last rolled around on July 2, 2017.
Avatar 10:01pm JakeGould:

@ListenerRobert: Nobody cares on the level you describe about the “official” decoration day in that way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Nate K.:

Thanks for hanging out everybody. If I had to do an encore, I'm glad it's this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Handy Haversack:

Legal ID totally within tolerances and still accurate!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm ultradamno:

Then there's Blue Dahlia, which came before Short and contributed to her namesake (otherwise has nothing to do with her). It's pretty bland but Veronica Lake is good.
  10:04pm Listener Robert:

Well, JG, I bet they care about it in the Rock And Roll Capital of the World, The Forest City, The Plum City, The Mistake by the Lake.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm Handy Haversack:

And The Black Swan, but I think only the queen is allowed to eat swans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

& when Veronica Lake is bad she's even better...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm ultradamno:

Finger lickin' good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm ultradamno:

That's true, like when she was a witch.
Avatar 10:09pm JakeGould:

If we’re going to chat about classic Hollywood actresses, I’m partial to Lauren Bacall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Nate K.:

I finally got around to watching Altman's "The Long Goodbye." At first, it made me wish I'd watched a classic noir. But the longer, no pun intended, it went on, the more I liked it. To where, by the end, I thought it was a straight classic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Handy Haversack:

@Nate K: This is working. Kate just said, "This is special shit right here."

I *think* I tried to tune in this ep. on my shitty radio before I understood how the internet worked. Better now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm Handy Haversack:

(Also: anent Long Goodbye: 100 percent same feeling.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm Nate K.:

@Handy, glad you're digging it!
Avatar 10:15pm JakeGould:

You mean the Eliot Gould “Long Goodbye?” I never liked that. it seems like the novelty of Eliot Gould being in that film is what makes it a cult classic.

I mean other modern noir films I can watch over and over again are “To Live and Die in L.A.”, “The Limey” and “Out of Sight.” Might put “Jackie Brown” in there but I am sick of Tarantino.
Avatar 10:16pm JakeGould:

Also… “The Big Lebowski.” Comedy but it is a detective film at it‘s core.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Mystery: Plot
Noir: Everything Else
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm Nate K.:

@Revo: That's excellent. I'm stealing that.
Avatar 10:19pm JakeGould:

@RRN63: Mysteries are like Science Fiction tales… Ultimately puzzles with a clear ending. Noir might have a puzzle that needs to be solved but that is not the main thing that makes you watch the film.
Avatar 10:21pm JakeGould:

This Silver Nichols is some serious “Sitting with my sadness as the sun sets…” music right there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm Nate K.:

@Jake, but he can't hit that note! That's the best part.
Avatar 10:22pm ToTetsu:

did anyone watch Tales from the loop?
Avatar 10:22pm JakeGould:

@NateK: He’s to sad to hit anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm ultradamno:

There don't seem to be that many great Jim Thompson movies. The Grifters and Coup de Torchon good, I like This World, Then The Fireworks. Killer Inside Me flubbed the ending.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm mariano:

For modern noir there's also Mulholland Dr.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh - Lynch. Having lived in SoCal 16 years - That.
Avatar 10:25pm JakeGould:

“Blue Velvet” is one too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm Handy Haversack:

That's one of my faves, Mariano. I thought it covered territory Lost Highway has already covered was my only real problem.

(With it. Clearly, I have many real problems.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm ultradamno:

Jackie Brown, Get Shorty and Out Of sight aside, Elmore Leonard has fared better on TV with Justified and even the short lived Karen Sisco and Maximum Bob series. The Get Shorty series isn't bad either, actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm Handy Haversack:

Is that current, ultradamno? I really love Justified. One of my all-time faves.
Avatar 10:29pm JakeGould:

Coppola’s “The Conversation” can be right in there as well. Very underrated film.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm mariano:

Yeah, Blue Velvet, abso-frickin'-lutely. Inland Empire is certainly noirish, but it's too non-linear to be truly noir since noir is so plot-driven. I know what you mean Handy, but every time I watch Mulholland I'm just so blown away by the performances, especially Naomi Watts's. And it has some of my favorite bits of Lynchian weirdness: the cowboy, Club Silencio, the Castiglione brothers, etc. Oh and speaking of Mulholland we can't leave out its spiritual ancestor Sunset Blvd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm ultradamno:

Get Shorty? I think it's still running, the first season is on Netflix. www.imdb.com...
  10:29pm Listener Robert:

Rabbit and JG, then how would you classify a screen-told puzzle whose solution is never made explicit as part of the show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm Mungerphut:

I grew up on the Ohio River and this set speaks to me
  10:31pm Listener Robert:

"The Conversation" had a great denouement, turning on the emphasis of a single word.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm Nate K.:

@Mungerphut, that's awesome. Most of these were deeeeep cuts to me until Ron played them.
Avatar 10:32pm slugluv1313:

hiya, Nate K. and everyone!
re: Black Dahlia -- heartbreaking story, that of Elizabeth Short -- i have the paperback somewhere, whose author claims "Daddy Was the Black Dahlia Murderer" -- but i do not recall it actually solving the crime . . . i saw "True Confessions" back when it opened (1980?) -- pretty decent, and i liked the interpretation in "American Horror Story" . . . i was totally psyched for the DePalma film! but then heard how awful it was :(

most of all, though, i remain heartbroken and angry -- all these stories surrounding Ms. Short, yet she never got justice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Handy Haversack:

@Mungerphut, internet-look-up "Secret History of American River People." Some good stuff about the Ohio River. I'm a river person, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Mungerphut:

Thanks Handy. I hope it includes Mothman
Avatar 10:34pm Joe B:

love JC Davis! great segue!
  10:34pm Listener Robert:

The denouement-free story I'm thinking of was "Lost". At the end, viewers didn't even realize it was a viewer-solvable mystery. As far as I know, I'm the only one who's come even close, and then only because I'd been a friend of the show runner since he was a teen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm Handy Haversack:

Whoa, now I have a research project, Mungerphut! Excellent.
  10:35pm kym:

slugluv: You're absolutely right! 'Black Dahlia Avenger' was an incredible read, and a lot of evidence points to the fact that George Hodel could have been involved with her murder but the author's case falls apart at a lot of points for me. The author being Hodel's son.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm Mungerphut:

@Handy, Oh wow you are in for some stories
  10:38pm kym:

'Severed' was really riveting, also. I forget the author's name and whether he or his father had been on the LAPD at one point but he claims to have met Elizabeth Short when he was a child. Probably a false memory, but the picture the book paints of her is much more charming and eccentric than the version we usually see (i.e. just another desperate failed starlet).
  10:41pm Listener Robert:

Oh, Mr. The K, after Mifflin could we please hear again from Mr. House? I sense that he's just about to burst.
Avatar 10:42pm slugluv1313:

@ kym -- i just checked, the book i have is by Janice Knowlton -- have not read Hodel's book yet -- but want to! "Severed" too -- thank-you!
  10:46pm kym:

@slugluv: You're welcome! It's a sad but fascinating rabbit hole to slide down. Hodel's book is truly amazing; it weirdly ties into the later laurel Canyon conspiracy stuff because George Hodel's daughter tamar was at the enter of an incest case that brought Hodel Sr to the attention of the LA police force. Tamar was later the best friend and mentor of michelle Phillips.

Also bizarre that there was more than one 'My Dad Killed the Dahlia' book.
Avatar 10:48pm ToTetsu:

that note about a music teacher form the 1980s reminded me of this gem.
aux.avclub.com...
Avatar 10:50pm slugluv1313:

@ kym -- right?
cynical as i am -- i gotta wonder if these other murders were of young women who were similar to Elizabeth Short
(yeah i watch WAY too many crime shows!)
Avatar 10:52pm JakeGould:

“The Somatics” sounds like a very 1980s band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm Handy Haversack:

(Still hoping Somatic Component is available as a band name!)
  10:53pm steveL:

Guessing their coke was cut with speed, but yes.
Avatar 10:55pm Joe B:

Nate, enjoying the show! missed it the first time. cool tunes, banter/info.
  10:56pm kym:

@slug: That's exactly where Hodel JR's book falls apart. He put forward a lot of compelling evidence, but then presents photos from his father's private photo album of a semi nude woman who is "obviously" Elizabeth Short. Only she so obviously is not.

Oh, and further compounding the noir connections, Hodel JR's mother is the ex-wife of John Huston. Honestly, the book is worth reading as a biography/tale of the darkest side of "Old Hollywood" even if none of the Dahlia theories are given credence.
  10:56pm steveL:

Unit 5 was pretty close to a hit, depending on the year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Handy Haversack:

Definitely sounded like a track Michael Shelley might find no. 1 - worthy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm McGroovey:

The Kids singer sounds like someone...can't put my finger on who... someone c.1980.
  11:06pm steveL:

God DAYUM, Scott Williams sounds fine tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm mariano:

Yeah, I know what you mean McGroovey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm Nate K.:

@Joe. Thanks, man. Would love to be live, of course, but I'm happy this one is getting a prime time airing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm Scott Williams:

Twofer Tuesday, friends! Double your legal ID action
Avatar 11:13pm Joe B:

make up for all the ones I miss!
  11:14pm steveL:

...and, Skeleton Crew, DJs, everyone involved: THANK YOU!!

So good, every day. We don’t care if we hear your refrigerator. We care that YOU care!
Avatar 11:15pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Listener Robert: "But if you put the archived playlist page in the left frame, then we could argue with the old comments."
You might enjoy my rerun shows. I repeat and/or interleave old comments with new ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm ultradamno:

Man, Human Zoo. Bevo was a fucking character.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm McGroovey:

Maybe the Kids songer sounds like a cross between Eddy Money and Huey Lewis and someone else...

Don't yell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm McGroovey:

singer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm Stevel:

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  11:20pm chaos_in_LA_LA:

Sunday morning used to be Ohio as all get out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm McGroovey:

[ - - - - - - - - - - - - ]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm Nate K.:

Best song ever, maybe?
Avatar 11:23pm JakeGould:

@kym: Kinda like how Kenneth Anger’s “Hollywood Babylon” is a shocking book but utter bullshit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm Stevel:

Yes. Fucking Yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm McGroovey:

Yes, best song over, expect for a lot of others that are also the best ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm Stevel:

None better!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm McGroovey:

except

(I should really proofread. )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm Nate K.:

I meant "Final Solution," but "Cyclotron" works, too.
  11:25pm kym:

@Jake: I would say 75% bullshit in Anger's case, but yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm Stevel:

So glad TEE recordings survived. So amazing. We know where punk started.
Avatar 11:26pm JakeGould:

@kym: Well the non-sensational stuff in Anger’s book is the 25% that is true. The rest is nonsense. But very compelling in the pre-Internet world of being able to get away with a con like that.
  11:27pm chaos_in_LA_LA:

Scrawl is forever one of the highlights.
Long live Ace of Cups
  11:27pm kym:

@Jake: I think it is more twisted fairy tale than con.
Avatar 11:30pm JakeGould:

@kym: True. I hesitated on that word but posted anyway. It’s more a piece of art based on the fantasies Anger — and others — have of what Hollywood was/is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm Nate K.:

@Jake, the podcast "You Must Remember This" did an incident-by-incident breakdown of what was true and what was false in Anger's book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm chaos_in_la_la:

pretty darn happy about this archive tonite. exactly what this Ohio kid in LA needed tonite..
  11:31pm kym:

@Jake: Absolutely. Self-serving, to be sure, but more artful than pure tabloid.
  11:31pm Todd76%:

Oh no, missed Ron House! Hey, Ron!!!
Avatar 11:31pm HexFamChan:

OH roots here! aww yea :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm chaos_in_la_la:

@NateK, I think I may have met you first time at the Counter Intuits Cake Shop show..I have a decent live recording of that set..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm mariano:

Yeah, something about Ohio: the most presidents, the most astronauts, and tons of legendary bands. Why can't you be like your brother, huh Indiana? [whaps Indiana on the back of the head]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm mariano:

OMG Nate, "You Must Remember This" looks frickin' amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm Handy Haversack:

I was even told to go to bed, but I am still hanging with you fine people!

You suck, Indiana.
  11:35pm kym:

'You Must Remember This' is freaking amazing! Prepare to lose many hours!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm Nate K.:

@Chaos, yes, I do remember that. Would love to hear it. One of my memories of that show was buying one of the most f'd up t-shirts I've ever seen a band sell. But I couldn't fully see what was going on with it because of the black light.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm mariano:

Bedtime, Handy? Work night?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm Stevel:

Indiana does suck, in ways, and has nothing like the Ohio music scene. But, that's the way things are.

That Ohio guy just said Boo-tay. It was unpleasant.
Avatar 11:41pm JakeGould:

@NateK: Thanks for the tip!
Avatar 11:44pm JakeGould:

Sadly this song would have been more appropriate on May 4th. R.I.P. Kent State victims.
Avatar 11:44pm Joe B:

well, Indiana gave us the Rivieras, that might be enough on its own.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm mariano:

Cole Porter and the Jacksons too, Joe B. And Kurt Vonnegut. Though I hear his band sucked.
Avatar 11:47pm JakeGould:

Jim Davis… The creator of Garfield is from Indiana. And that’s all I care about.
Avatar 11:47pm Joe B:

Ha! Breakfast and the Champions, I think i found their 45 at the record fair one year
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm mariano:

Lol Joe B! Ooh, that's a major coup for the prosecution, Jake.
Avatar 11:48pm Joe B:

and of course after the Jackson 5, the No. 2 band from Gary, Oscar & the Majestics!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm Scott Williams:

Indiana gave us Chop Scott - case closed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm Stevel:

James Dean was from Fairmount, as was Garfield's daddy. I think he wins. Born in Marion, as were my two kids, (in spite of our better efforts.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm Stevel:

I can certainly tell you, Indiana is feeling the love tonight. Dan Quayle. Mike Pence. Oh shit.
Avatar 11:50pm Joe B:

@Scott - mic drop! oh wait, you nor Scott would abuse gear like that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm ultradamno:

Also, Ball Jars. MX-80 Sound, Dancing Cigarettes, Gizmos, Dow Jones & The Industrials, Crazy Doberman, Cowboys...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm chaos_in_la_la:

Trouble finding your email address @NateK. I can't figure out how to send it thru station mail system..
  11:52pm kym:

But Ohio has Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Paul Lynde and Phyllis Diller. And that trumps all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm chaos_in_la_la:

wait! I found it in my contacts!!
Avatar 11:53pm JakeGould:

@kym: THANK YOU! Those are valuable people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm Scott Williams:

@Joe B, you're right, that did come off a little mic-droppy! Apologies
  11:53pm rw:

Thanks Nate K! Was fun traveling back to a simpler time.
Avatar 11:53pm Joe B:

since Nate mentioned her fill-in from the past, Sasha is a great follow on Twitter!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm Nate K.:

These last two patriotic tunes, work very well in this day and age as well. Sorry for the time warp, folks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm Nate K.:

@JoeB, agree!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm ultradamno:

Charles Manson, Sylvia Likens and John Dillinger, bitches.
Avatar 11:54pm Joe B:

spoiler alert - we did!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm Nate K.:

What's great about GBV is that any mention of a new album is going to be timely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm ultradamno:

...and Jim Jones.
Avatar 11:55pm JakeGould:

The Gar-B-Que is back?!?!? WOWOWOWOWO!
Avatar 11:55pm slugluv1313:

omg the Kenneth Anger books! i have both of them -- the photos are fun, but never really took them *seriously*
DEFINITELY going to check out "You Must Remember This"!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm mariano:

Hoagy Carmichael and Florence Henderson too! Oh yeah, ultradamno, I forgot about Jim Jones, yikes.
Avatar 11:56pm Joe B:

doug had just re-joined GBV and tells the story of flying in on hours notice to, i think, cincinnati!
Avatar 11:56pm Joe B:

@Nate - ha - good point about the GBV release schedule!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm McGroovey:

It's 5:00. There must be a new GBV record coming out tomorrow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm McGroovey:

OK. I know. It's 11:57pm
Avatar 11:57pm Joe B:

@Scott - no, meant it as a compliment as in I agreed! as i typed in mic drop i was like, oh no no - not with these two!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm ultradamno:

Mother of motherfucking modern nursing! Also, Modern Vending, Zero Boys and Last Four (4) Digits
Avatar 11:58pm Joe B:

thanks Nate!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm mariano:

Wes Montgomery, David Lee Roth, Axl Rose, Izzy Stradlin and John Mellencamp! Look at your bad self, Indiana!

Ok thanks Nate, Scott (but no thanks to the internet, boo!), see everyone at Tom's hopefully!
  11:58pm Aaron Working in Newark:
