Good morning, Jeff & the congliptious.

  9:06am JtotheK:

Hi Jeff hi everyone!
Avatar 9:06am Listener Gregory:

Congratulations to you and Mrs. Out! Experts agree that the first 22 years are the hardest, so it's clear sailing now.

Joining a few minutes late and had to double check: no this is the right place
Avatar 9:07am StringOFperils:

Gooood morning world.
  9:08am doca:

Hi, @Jeff G and fellow listeners. I’ll be lurking here, but I’m glad to be able to catch D:O radio live. Congrats on your wedding anniversary!
  9:12am JtotheK:

Congrats on your anniversary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Jeff Golick:

Hey, thanks, @doca! @StringOFperils! @DJpeterDE! @Listener Gregory! @JtotheK! @holland oats! @TDK60! @Doug! @WR! @ljfw!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Doug Schulkind:

Frank Sinatra's 1964 recording of "Fly Me to the Moon" became closely associated with NASA's Apollo space program. A copy of the song was played on a Sony TC-50 portable cassette player on the Apollo 10 mission which orbited the Moon, and also on Apollo 11 before the first landing on the Moon.
  9:16am DJpeterDE:

Quick internet search reveals: 22nd anniversary is copper! (congrats!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Jeff Golick:

It's been to the moon and somehow I don't have it! (It was our recessional tune.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @DJpeterDE! Good call -- copper is good for virus times, apparently.
  9:19am DJpeterDE:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am listener james from westwood:

I never seem to remember this is a Beach Boys song. But then I always initially think "Good Day Sunshine" is a Dead song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am doctorjazz:

Happy Anniversary, @Jeffg!
Avatar 9:23am holland oats:

nice vibe this
Avatar 9:23am holland oats:

& congrats!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @doctorjazz! Yeah, @holland oats!
  9:24am DJpeterDE:

I am inferring (speculating) that when the original D:O site was formed Jeff and Jeff walked down the internet registry aisle to Dudu Pukwana and recessed to Roscoe Mitchell
Avatar 9:26am TDK60:

Never heard the Wild Honey album.
Avatar 9:29am TDK60:

Yay, it's National Zimmerman Day; I get to stay home.
Avatar 9:32am duke:

Good Morning Jeff and Sunday morning folks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Jeff Golick:

Heya, @duke!
Avatar 9:37am Mayuko:

Good morning, Jeff and all!
Avatar 9:37am Listener Gregory:

You can hear this song ~32 times on that boxed set of the 1966 Dylan/Band tour. It's good. I didn't really know it before, but by the 12th time I did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Jeff Golick:

@Mayuko! Great to see you. How goes the packing?
Avatar 9:39am Listener Gregory:

I think that "I Threw It Away" could be a #1 pop song if the right dreamy crooner sang it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am listener james from westwood:

Mayuko!!
  9:42am Stork:

Hi Mayuko! Jeff! Out-lettes!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am doctorjazz:

Great Daft!
Hi, Mayuko!
Avatar 9:43am Mayuko:

@Jeff Not going as much as it should. My studio has too many things that have weird shape and irregular size. ugh!

Hi james! Stork!! doctorjazz!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Jeff Golick:

@Stooooooork!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Jeff Golick:

Oh gosh, the studio, @Mayuko. My sympathies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am fred:

Quick hello everyone as I'm busy working
@Mayuko: many weird and irregular things? No wonder you're such a great fit for WFMU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

Maestro Mayuko!
Avatar 9:56am Mayuko:

@fred haha! it's true, that's basically my life.

Doug! Thank you for helping out yesterday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am doctorjazz:

Was the Atlas Sound track supposed to sound like that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Doug Schulkind:

Big shoes to fill, Mayuko.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Jeff Golick:

I think so, @doc, though not 100% sure what you were hearing, of course. Those are bedroom recordings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am doctorjazz:

The vocal was bizarrely distorted on my end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am fred:

@Jeff: and congratulations to you and your wife
OK, back to writing bugs...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @fred!
Avatar 10:11am StringOFperils:

Still difficult to imagine the audiences actively hating this band and its live performances.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Jeff Golick:

They came for something else, @StringOFperils. You can certainly hear the vitriol in BD's voice.
Avatar 10:15am Listener Gregory:

@StringOFperils, When listening to that box set, I kept thinking, "If Bob put on this concert today, the audience would all say, 'What a great concert! He played his best songs!'"
  10:17am hunkered oats:

This Fairport track is probably my favorite Dylan cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am doctorjazz:

This Fairport version must be one of the best Dylan covers out there (Jimi made it hard to label any as the best, but...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Jeff Golick:

The definitive version, as far as I'm concerned.
  10:20am rw:

Morning!
  10:20am Stork:

Better than Bob. Which would be a good name for a Dylan cover band. OH!!
Avatar 10:20am StringOFperils:

All I have of the 1966 live shows is my old cassette made from a friend's bootleg pressing back in the late 70s, which was out in the wild under a few different titles...can't imagine a box set, althoughit undoubtedly sounds better. Definitely a nascent Johnny Rotten in there, provoking a disturbingly religious following for whom Dylan is demonstrating contempt. A provocation to wake up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am doctorjazz:

I wasn't old enough to catch that concert that got Dylan boo'd. By the time I saw him come out to sing with The Band (encores at The Band's Academy of Music New Year's show), alli had been forgiven (the audience went bonkers)
Avatar 10:28am Listener Gregory:

@doctorjazz--it was MANY concerts in that tour. After a few concerts it became apparent that some in the audience came simply to boo, or at least scoff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Doug Schulkind:

Jeff Golick saying, "But it's a biggie," is my favorite thing.
Avatar 10:29am hyde:

Hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Jeff Golick:

Hi, @hyde!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am doctorjazz:

LG, I know, Dylan "betrayed" his folkie, protest singing roots, "sold out" to sing rock n roll, make tons of money, and infuriated his "fans", and for boos that entire tour. But, a year or 2 later, Electric Dylan was a star.
Avatar 10:36am Listener Gregory:

@doctor, right. I wonder if he converted any of the folk fans or if he just recruited brand new fans. I guess we have to remember that most of the audience probably *didn't* boo.
Avatar 10:48am StringOFperils:

The irony in the idea of Dylan reluctantly becoming a rockstar, is that his roots are in 'peoples' music, and stories of the human heart, which is what he got from Woody Guthrie and Blind Willie McTell and others, but it wasn't (isn't) about the individuals, it's about the collective experience in the NOW. So, although schooled in the past, he was listening to new radio in the early 60s, and he wanted to be a part of that, part of what other people were doing, which was new pop music. Electric was where it was at (or going to be very shortly). What genuinely creative artist wants to be an imitator of the past? He knew he wasn't knee-deep in the big muddy, he was knee-deep in The Searchers, and The Impressions. The surprise wasn't Bob recanting his 'roots', the surprise was his audience turning out to be uber-controlling rigid conservatives who were looking for some kind of counter-culture fuhrer....to which he posted the riposte: You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows. I don't believe he ever recovered from the disillusionment.
Avatar 10:48am Sem:

Hello and good morning, Jeff, and time zone appropriate greets to D:O-ers within the sight of my typing. Bumper crop of rhubarb this year, a bumper crop of bumpers, not so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Jeff Golick:

Hi there, @Sem!

And well put, @StringOFperils!
  10:55am rw:

I should have named my son Archie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Doug Schulkind:

Imagine sitting there at the Both/And taking in this show. A performance so legendary, it produced not one but two live recordings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Jeff Golick:

@rw: what did you go with instead?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Jeff Golick:

I think I'd still be sitting there, @Doug.
  11:01am rw:

Ha! We went with Miles. Not because of Mr. Davis, just because we liked the name. My dad's Uncle was Archie. Pretty sure my (now ex) wife would have nixed it though.
  11:03am rw:

And not that it has anything to do with anything but Miles just had his last day of High School yesterday. Weird time to graduate!
Avatar 11:04am Listener Gregory:

@rw, just saw an article on gifts for high school graduates. The accompanying picture had 6 gifts, 3 of which were knives. WTH
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Jeff Golick:

Well, congrats to Miles, @rw!
Avatar 11:05am StringOFperils:

Miles ahead!! Congrats to your son...now the real fun begins.
  11:09am rw:

Ha! Thank you! My daughter and I went in on a backpack and hiking shoes. No knives!
Avatar 11:12am hyde:

You could play eleven eleven by Come
  11:12am rw:

Anniversary? Happy anniversary!! High five!
  11:13am rw:

Or... high 22, if that's possible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @rw!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am doctorjazz:

Congrats, rh! My younger daughter graduated from The College of New Jersey last Thursday. They actually managed to put together a virtual graduation that was nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Doug Schulkind:

Congratulations, youngerdaughterjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Jeff Golick:

Yes, yay to daughter-of-@doctorjazz! My college sophomore son just finished his term. (The semester officially ended on Tuesday; his ended yesterday.)
Avatar 11:21am Listener Gregory:

The quality of Clean Feed releases is surprisingly high, given their volume, IMHO.
  11:22am rw:

Thank you docjazz! Congratulations to daughterjazz and young Mr. Golick too!! My kid seems not so interested in any kind of official graduation. He's so much like his dad I can't stand it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am doctorjazz:

Thanks, Doug and Jeff! She majored in Biology/Secondary Education, but I don't think they spent much time on how to teach virtually.
  11:23am rw:

official graduation ceremony, I mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Jeff Golick:

@LG: agreed re Clean Feed. Impossible to keep up, though.
Avatar 11:24am StringOFperils:

@drjazz...virtually or otherwise, that's the perennial challenge of the age: How to make people learn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am coelacanth∅:

good morning Jeff, OUTies
  11:25am rw:

doctorjazz, speaking of a weird time to graduate... good luck to her! I'm sure she'll do great. I get the feeling she's been raised well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Jeff Golick:

Good morning, @coelacanth∅!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am doctorjazz:

Molly was happy about graduating. She had a really rocky last year of High School/1st year of college, but she pulled it together. She (and the rest of us) were very proud of her.
Avatar 11:28am Wolfgang:

Sweet, DrJ. Congrats, daddy-o! And daughter-o!
  11:30am rw:

The rocks can be tough, but I think they're important.

Hey coel!
Avatar 11:31am Listener Gregory:

@doctorjazz, my niece just graduated with a degree in special ed. Some of her classmates could not complete their full practice teaching when their schools closed. It's unclear whether the state licensing boards will accept their 8-week practice or what will be done to complete it. They're pretty anxious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am doctorjazz:

@rw, my wife, the therapist, is a big believer in the "good enough" parenting theory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am coelacanth∅:

'morning rw!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am doctorjazz:

Molly was lucky in that way, she had some big courses to complete her last semester, but she had completed her student teaching.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am doctorjazz:

Hey, Coel!

i think i have to, Wolfgang! i can take a walk later. if you go for 7 hours or more i might take a break for a bicycle ride.
  11:37am DJpeterDE:

Why do I love the sound of the Fender Rhodes so much?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am coelacanth∅:

(hmm, i changed my plan mid-comment...)
Avatar 11:39am StringOFperils:

Sheathing his mighty rapier?! Is that like prophylaxis against bad music or something?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am doctorjazz:

Boy, did this Bonnet RayBlues go in a different direction than I expected-that electric piano opening had me expecting an Electric Miles sound. It's terrific, though.
Avatar 11:39am Wolfgang: The Commenter:

@DJpeterDE: maybe cuz you never had to haul one up three flights of stairs for a show! A seriously heavy mother - with a heavenly sound!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Jeff Golick:

Love it, too, @DJpeterDE.

So, the Shepptacular at Stork's place is here: wfmu.org...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am coelacanth∅:

Wolfgang i have to admit i took a few breaks from Jackie McLean! i was also surprised at how much of that 6 (+?) hours i did listen to, enjoying.
  11:50am DJpeterDE:

This is the second solo Berne you’ve played: how is the album overall?
Avatar 11:52am Listener Gregory:

@DJpeterDE, I heard it once and enjoyed it. It's not very long, which is fine.
Avatar 11:53am Wolfgang: The Commenter:

Thanks for hanging in there, coel! I'm always hoping people can circle back to the archive. These suckers are way long. After this week, it's back on the Freeform Farm for me for a while (although I have a couple in my sights, a ways off).
Avatar 11:53am Listener Gregory:

My sense is that Berne's playing on the album sounds more like his solos than his compositions, if that makes any sense. That is, they don't have a lot of contrasting parts in each cut.
Avatar 11:54am Wolfgang: The Commenter:

That Michael Veal cut was superb, JG!!
Avatar 11:54am Wolfgang: The Commenter:

Veal.. cut... I didn't mean that...hooboy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Jeff Golick:

I haven't given that Berne solo record a fair shake yet. Have I played something else from it? I didn't think I had...
Avatar 11:55am StringOFperils:

Ha ha ha. And I thought the Berne LP title and label name were punny.
