hi Brian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Julie:

this first set is kinda bong worthy isn't it
Avatar 12:15pm coelacanth∅:

i've heard that line sung but don't recall where. my guess is Robyn.
...whomever it was either didn't know dogs, had really stupid dogs, or was projecting!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Julie:

bongworthy > bingeworthy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Handy Haversack:

Are you intentionally posting the best hair pix now, Julie, or are we just in great hair territory full stop?
Avatar 12:15pm Roberto:

Well, back to Pseu. Sry :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Julie:

haha okay Roberto
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Julie:

@Handy hmm it's not intentional but if the hair is good, even better

Hi Julie, Hi Everybody! So glad to be listening, and I must say, I noted the hairdos immediately. I am a naturally hairdo-oriented person; maybe cuz my mom was :>)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Phillippe Bastille:

I have the TV on but no sound, so you still have me, Julie!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Julie:

oh Phillippe that's GOOD
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Phillippe Bastille:

I had to get it in before Handy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Handy Haversack:

Hairs are your aerials.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Stanley:

What do you mean Handy? Do they pick up signals from the cosmos, and transmit them directly into the brain, or something?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Julie:

can anyone really compete with classic queen hair?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Handy Haversack:

Indeed, Stanley. That's why bald-headed men are so uptight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Julie:

Sir Pat is not uptight, he's just English
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Great show, Julie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Julie:

thanks, S & M & S!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Julie:

the extra "S" is for extra sadism? I guess?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm brainiac:

Hi Julie and soulmates. Sorry to be late to the party. I brought Zimas for everybody.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Julie:

Hi Brainiac!
Avatar 12:53pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

extra sassy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Julie:

oh that's good, Sylvia!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Perfect number of "s"'s!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Handy Haversack:

Yo, Zima guy! Zing one up here!

Hey, brainiac.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Julie:

I have never in my life drank a Zima. is it minty?
Avatar 12:57pm Hubig Pie:

Zima = unflavored malt beverage
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm listener james from westwood:

It's . . . weirdly sweet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Julie:

no flavor??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm listener james from westwood:

No mint flavor, though, unless they released one subsequent to the 90s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Julie:

I just remember it was clear so people put it in water bottles
Avatar 12:57pm Hubig Pie:

Nada
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm brainiac:

Hey Handy! I actually never had a Zima, and I doubt they make them anymore. But I wonder if I it could theoretically be made in the bathtub.
  12:58pm Mr Nobody:

Definitely not minty. Lemon lime but I believe they had a few other flavors that came out.
Avatar 12:58pm coelacanth∅:

zima's marketed at teenagers, no? (or, 20-somethings...same thing now)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm listener james from westwood:

It provoked the great throwaway Simpsons line, "Excuse me—I ordered a Zima, not emphy-sema!" when Selma lights up in a restaurant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Julie:

hahah oh Selma
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm listener james from westwood:

There was also a Zima neon bar sign in the sci-fi series Babylon 5, meaning someone really thought that shit would endure until the 2250s.
Avatar 1:00pm coelacanth∅:

(...so i always assumed it's sweet)
  1:02pm Marie:

I love all the hair talk! I just thought of a new term: "perm dome". My dear little mother always had that going on after a certain age.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Handy Haversack:

I think it came back like ... ten years ago? And then disappeared again. My only memory of Zima is pounding two of them in a friend's car before an Atlanta Falcons game that he had got us tickets to.

Come here, Jub Jub.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Julie:

yeah most of those kind of things are sweet. I have some kinda sweet malt beverage in my fridge but I forget which kind. not twisted ice tea but something similar
Avatar 1:02pm coelacanth∅:

"Introduced in 1993, it was marketed as an alternative to beer, an example of what is now often referred to as a cooler, with 4.7–5.4% alcohol by volume.[1] Its production in the United States ceased in October 2008, but the product is still marketed in Japan."
  1:03pm Mr Nobody:

Ha yes it was definitely a teen/20s drink. One of those "girly beers" it was similarish to Smirnoff Ice and quite a few other sweet malted alcoholic beverages. They go down pretty easy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Handy Haversack:

Ha, coela, with my corner store, you never know -- they might have just found a few cases in the store room and threw them on the shelves!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm listener james from westwood:

Hah! There was a Smirnoff Ice skit on an old Best Show.
  1:04pm Marie:

I always equate zimas with wine coolers, category-wise
  1:04pm Mr Nobody:

Don't be scared Julie. LOL
Avatar 1:05pm coelacanth∅:

Handy wikipedia says it was reintroduced in 2017 and lasted about a year and now gone again.
Avatar 1:07pm coelacanth∅:

...yeah maybe they were waiting for the clamoring for zima to reach a point of $100.00/bottle but eventually gave up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Phillippe Bastille:

Zima has nothing on Fresca
Avatar 1:08pm coelacanth∅:

i agree about Tori's cover of nirvana. excellent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Handy Haversack:

Very likely, coela.
Avatar 1:08pm Hubig Pie:

Fresca - the un-Tab
  1:08pm Mr Nobody:

You know I would have said it was still out but I guess it has been quite a few years since I have reached for those in the cooler. After looking it up like coelacanth though it does ring a bell that there was a slight uproar when they stopped making them years back.
  1:10pm spodiodi:

did somebody say "Zima"?
hi Julie!
hi everybody
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Phillippe Bastille:

Tab was/is terrible
Avatar 1:11pm coelacanth∅:

Phillippe have you had pelegrino grapefruit soda?
...in my opinion it's got a lot on fresca!
(but maybe you need sugar-free)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm brainiac:

Apparently DIY Zima is possible, but you'll need to find a Japanese soft drink called Calpico. www.foodandwine.com...
Avatar 1:13pm Hubig Pie:

Ooo, more hair pics
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Handy Haversack:

One of my projects today is trying to convince myself that I do not need and should not even want a seven-volume history of the apple in the United States and Canada. But I can't seem to bring myself to close that tab ...
Avatar 1:15pm coelacanth∅:

haha ...you're as bad as me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Julie:

okay I am now drinking Mikes Hard Lemonade BLACK CHERRY
Avatar 1:15pm coelacanth∅:

(maybe worse?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm brainiac:

@Handy: If it's leather bound, go for it.
Avatar 1:17pm Hubig Pie:

That's the new Stephin Merritt
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Phillippe Bastille:

@coel I have, it is excellent. I do drink Fresca to avoid the sugar (type 2 diabetes in remission and I'd like to keep it that way). When I do decide to cheat, the pelegrino is my go-to. I remember back in the day when Squirt was the best grapefruit soda, now not so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm brainiac:

74 years fabulous
  1:19pm Mr Nobody:

Oh man Squirt? Now that takes me back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Julie:

it's pretty yummy..proof on the twitter
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm chris:

hi, Julie and folks. i've been enjoying SpinDrifts lately. bubbly water + a bit of real fruit juice. very nice and refreshing. also enjoying these tunes today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Handy Haversack:

Ah, Phillippe. Old Squirt was SO GOOD. When we drive to and from Michigan, there's a Mexican restaurant in western PA that sells Mexican Squirt (¡a refresco!), and I always get six bottles to bring home.

All adverbs and adjectives in the foregoing relating to time and habits to be taken with a grain of salt, of course.
Avatar 1:21pm coelacanth∅:

like the rest of the old time sodapops Phillippe they probably switched to corn syrup from cane/beet sugar.
blugh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Julie:

hi Chris! that sounds great!
Avatar 1:22pm northguineahills:

Lush!
Avatar 1:23pm Hubig Pie:

Ruby-red Squirt mixes well with a Zima
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Julie:

wasn't squirt also the gum that oozed when you bit into it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Julie:

mexican soda is far superior for sure
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm brainiac:

I'm not the one who will say what we called that gum in high school.
  1:24pm Mr Nobody:

Those "Mexican" sodas are always sooo good. Even though Mrs Nobody spent a lot of time in Tejas growing up I don't think she ever really knew about them. She didn't understand why I would get excited about finding sodas in tall glass bottles on road trips. I think she is starting to get it now. They are just so good.
  1:25pm Mr Nobody:

Lol also got her hooked on Topo Chico.
Avatar 1:26pm northguineahills:

@Mr Nobody: Jarritos?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Julie:

better topo chico than jack!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm brainiac:

Heh, I just realized Nick Lowe ganked this song from Donovan when he cut "Music For Money."
Avatar 1:28pm spodiodi:

Donovan has been on my mind the past couple of days. Thanks, Julie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Julie:

hi spodi! I do love my Donovan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Handy Haversack:

I feel like I should maybe shake it. If only I knew what it was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm Julie:

@brainy i will have to check that out!
  1:31pm Mr Nobody:

@northguinea hills: Jarritos, Que Bueno Son!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Julie:

I can see drinking this bottle of hard lemonade way too fast
Avatar 1:32pm spodiodi:

with a straw!
  1:32pm Mr Nobody:

@Julie yep that's why they are so popular. Easy to get tipsy fast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Julie:

there's some hair for ya
  1:33pm Mr Nobody:

Ahhh yessss. Always loved this one!
Avatar 1:35pm northguineahills:

If I want to get tipsy fast, I'll drink a bottle of vodka!

But seriously, I always add vodka when making sangria w/ fresh fruit, sort of like I add mezcal to my made from scratch micheladas (not the shite that passes for a michelada stateside...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm Mr. Pumpy:

So...is this where all the cool kids hang out on Thursday afternoons?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm Handy Haversack:

Oh man. Gotta stiffen both spine and upper lip for this song.

A year or so back (Oct. 2018: day after Nick Cave at Barclays). I officiated a friend's wedding. Another really close friend came back from (Davis) Cali for it. I sang this to him on the karaoke machine as soon as the ceremony was over. Apparently even more arresting than my performance was how passers-by on the Bay Ridge street stopped in awe and terror of what was going on inside ...

This one gets the feelings going.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Julie:

all my sick drinking experiences began with vodka
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Julie:

Hi NGH! Hi Mr Pumpy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Mr. Pumpy:

Welcome, Mr Pumpy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Handy Haversack:

One day, ngh! Bring vodka!
Avatar 1:41pm coelacanth∅:

i got a bottle of mexican soda at a mexican restaurant a year or 2 ago, don't know if it was juarritos...i was tempted because cane sugar, not corn syrup, but hesitant because of artificial color. i got pineapple -the worst artificial color of them all, yellow! hey i was thirsty.
anyway i think i drank only about 1/4 of it.
tooooooo sweet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Julie:

I threw up in a taxi with my bf at the time. That was the last time I had any vodka I think

"All your Zima talk"! You have us dead to rights, Julie!
Avatar 1:48pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Pumpy. i sometimes do. i think i didn't bite for about a week (i forgot to check 1 or 2 days) but i bought yesterday's...only gave them a buck though. i'm a bit apprehensive about artists that try to sound "edgy"...who compare themselves to Tom Waits or Nick Cave or whatever; but i found myself enjoying it about mid-album, from the kitchen -so i got it. i didn't want to spend too much time thinking about it. maybe they should've gotten more for that album, but i'm poor!

coel, you are doing right by them. I imagine most everyone is giving el zilcho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Phillippe Bastille:

@coel my middle son loves the Mexican soda. The Mexxon (what we call the Mexican restaurant in the Exxon) near us sells them and there's always an empty bottle or two on our kitchen counter, 6 inches away from our recycling bin.

Donovan has been on my mind since all of the Pretty Things / Electric Banana tributes (the band was new to me, like so many others here on WFMU, until just a couple of days ago.)
And, I'd been wondering if there was any Donovan / Mellow Yellow connection (electricAL banana.) SO, "Mellow Yellow" has been on my mind since (along with the soda.) I think yesterday, and maybe some days prior, this soda discussion has been happening. "Fresca", and other obscure beverages -- and I wanted to say "hey, what about Mello Yello?", (the soft drink.) Anyway, have been wondering what came first? Donovan, then Electric Banana, then Mello Yello seems to be the chronological order. Then I wondered (had I wondered before, in my teenage years what "Electrical Banana" meant? I guessed yesterday that i has to be a term for a vibrator, (if I hadn't concluded as much was likely years ago).
Anyway, I'd just been singing "Mellow Yellow" in my head in the shower, we especially liked the "quite right, slick!" part back in the day. Then I read the room and saw Fresca (and Zima, etc. talk again, and had to tell my story).
Thanks again, Julie for exercising my Donovan possession! (thanks for suffering through my boring story, chat. B^)

shit, i think even 50¢ gets your profile up there as a supporter. i'd rather have that than nothing...if only for marketing purposes! (more "supporters")

Ha, worth reading to the end, spodiodi!

Julie, anent your Twitter and What We Do in the Shadows: there was a good article in the Ringer a couple of weeks back! Really cool info on the actors.

@1:45 Handy Haversack: Good to see you too Handy!
@1:43 Julie: whoa, I just realised that was a bbc session and not from garlands, as I listened to the first three sets eyes closed and oblivious to that new tracklist (artist/band pictures and all!). Oh, what! I think I don't have that Cocteau Twins BBC sessions collection. Cue record shopping frenzy...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Mr. Pumpy:

@coel, it is definitely good for marketing. I usually pay nothing, but the flip side of that is I am often turning friends on to new sounds, going to shows, and buying vinyl. Like my dropping $100+ on that field works vinyl box set. So, it works! And yes, all of those bands then have me on their mailing list.

Yeah. I mean, I guess science relies on a control group -- something has to provide empirical evidence of the awesomeness of Cocteau Twins' hair. But ... we have Genesis for that, lads.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Hubig that's right, according to the same wikipedia note. They still have a presence in the racing community (we watch a lot of racing in my house...). They ran Kyle Petty's real life Mello Yello scheme in Days of Thunder. We were watching some drag racing a few days ago and the new Mello Yello logo was all over the place.

not that it matters that much, but I had absolutely no idea Phil May was bisexual until reading all the obituaries. While one should not put too much emphasis on the private lives of your favorite performers, he became even cooler in my book if that possible anymore - I mean the man was playing sweaty clubs up until 2018 or so (his health was not that great anymore), gotta respect that.
