A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am AndrewC.:

No birdsong records needed today - actual birds outside are really going for it, and the bluetit parents are in and out of the nestbox continually (hopefully) feeding the young'ns.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Handy Haversack:

I was hearing a very angry blue jay scream out front, but now I'm surrounded by extremely loud purring as two of the cats take their postprandial nap next to me. As soon as it warms up a touch, I'll head outside to work in the sparrow sounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am p20:

@Trouble: I wanted to let you know I took your suggestion and watched the Piketty film (Capital) - watched most of it twice, actually. It was very good, reminded me a bit of "The Big Short" in its (successful) attempt to make economics accessible to general audiences. The economists and professors they interviewed were great. I'd suggest the film to anyone. I admire Piketty and I think he's doing a lot of good in the world. But at the end of the day I'm a lot further to the left than he is - he thinks capitalism can be saved by changing policies (mostly taxation), whereas I'm pretty convinced that it needs to be demolished. But I see anyone who is advocating any sort of leftist reforms, no matter how mild, as an ally. So thanks for the movie suggestion & the conversation it triggered. (Did any other listeners check it out?)

Avatar 9:19am Trouble:

i hear you on the demolish part @P20, but i can't ever see that happening in these united states, or many countries for that matter. Legislation to curb private greed is the best we can hope for, and even that seems far fetched right now with the all about me party in charge

The Trouble With Crud. Morning everybody.

Why is it the People Who Believe In Rules that are the ones who don't like to follow the rules?
Avatar 9:28am Pale Son:

@p20 Yes, and the actual Four Futures diagram reminded me so much of one of the best bits I ever got from my high school economics class, way back in the day. A diagram with democracy–dictatorship on one axis, private–public ownership on the other, dividing the space into four economic-political systems: capitalism, socialism, communism, and fascism. It's such a clear and simple way to think about some pretty huge and complex ideas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am melinda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am p20:

@Crudbringer: I think "nature red in tooth and claw" is a bit of a fantasy too. First of all, Nature is complex. Ants live in cooperative societies. There are all kinds of examples of cooperation and symbiosis. Secondly, we don't live in a state of nature. We live in a constructed social system. And we should have some say in the construction of said system. And I think we should try to uphold basic Enlightenment values, which have been around for hundreds of years.
Avatar 9:46am Jeezuseffinchrist:

@p-20, hear hear
  9:46am Dave Conehead:

Awesome tunes for the moment
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am p20:

And in lots of ways, the capitalist system we've devised is more brutal than anything to be found in the natural world. Look at how many people someone like Bezos (on track to become the first trillionaire) can dominate. In a nature-based society his power would be much more limited. (And he'd probably get eaten).
  9:47am Jeffrey Davison:

Good morning, Trouble and all sojourners here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am melinda:

@Pale Son makes sense. The context in which I heard it first described in a positive light is different from the Wiki definition I just looked up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Crudbringer:

@p20 agree, except that I think the "construction" of our social system increasingly resembles the physical construction of our bridges and schools. Men with spade beards and Deep Bleefs about their Hairtidge are polishing their guns.

I think the "brutality" of the system is just the natural result of the lack of any "rules" at all.
Avatar 9:48am Trouble:

good morning jeffrey! how goes it?
Avatar 9:49am Jeezuseffinchrist:

@p20 one could only dream
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Crudbringer:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am melinda:

Nature is about cooperation as well as competition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Crudbringer:

Avatar 9:52am StringOFperils:

Unqualified agreement on that Jeezy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Handy Haversack:

@p20, I think one of the books I mentioned in our recommendation fest some weeks ago was Amatka, which I think does one of the better jobs of trying -- mimetically, at least -- to figure what lies on the other side of change we are poorly able to imagine. When the capitalist system that has defined brutal life on this planet for hundreds of years is brought down, what does life look like? It's hard hard hard to get one's imagination past that point of singularity.

But extractive capitalism might and tends toward ending only when there's nothing left to extract and no one left to (force to) extract it.
  9:53am hey buddy:

Knocking it out of the park again! Thanks trouble!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Crudbringer:

I dunno. That Beaver documentary notwithstanding, I think the "cooperation" observed in nature is ephemeral at best, or specious. I'm not sure what ants do is "cooperating", with a happy heart and a clear mind.

@Crudbringer cooperating might not be the best word, but not everything is zero-sum. Trees provide each other with nutrients via huge underground fungal systems. Reciprocal altruism was an important discovery in evolutionary theory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Crudbringer:

@kpx just like a beaver builds a dam.

I had a big falling-out with my holy-roller manager this week. He approvingly quoted Elon Musk, and said "He's not afraid to say what he thinks, even if it's unpopular!"

I said, "Maybe it's unpopular because it's stupid."

Him: "Nope."

Now he's acting all butt-hurt. I can't see why. I was just saying what I think, without caring whether it was a popular thing to say. I had been hoping it would increase his respect for me.

Avatar 10:30am Pale Son:

I was supposed to be seeing the Arkestra here in Halifax next month, but it's not happening now, obv. Too bad!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Passaic River Blues:

@Trouble: thank you! Also, we got one of the elegant pandemic masks in the mail yesterday--my wife was thrilled with how beautiful and well made it was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Webhamster Henry:

Don't forget to mention the Sun Ra Remix CD done by WFMU staffers "Interplanetary Remixes: WFMU Reinterprets The Music Of Sun Ra"
Avatar 10:34am ranjit:

oh wow, Henry, i gotta get that there remix
Avatar 10:34am Fredericks:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Itzall Hear:

Um, dear Webby Hank, where would a person go to find that CD?!?
Avatar 10:35am Trouble:

@passaic river blues: fabulous! i believe i wrote sizes on them, and if they don't fit let me know and i can make another size and you can give away the off sized one...wear in good health!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Webhamster Henry:

WFMU Used to have it in the store. Hmm! Trouble played some cuts from it last year's Sun Ra show (including mine #talksabouthimselfexcessively)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am WillCrete:

Thanks for is Sun Ra Birthday set Trouble! Magnificent listening this morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Handy Haversack:

Michele said she'll be adding material to the store this weekend. Maybe it will come back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am WO Town Wick:

Yo La Tengo got me interested in Sun Ra. Tried to resist but was overcome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Mick:

What an amazing Sun Ra set - thanks Trouble!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Crudbringer:

man I may have to build some pyramids this weekend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am steveo:

tuba jazz rules
Avatar 10:41am Trouble:

gracias@ mick, willcrete, glad to bring the sun ra sounds into the daylight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am steveo:

hm no tuba listed; maybe i'm hearing bass clarinet? in which case, bass clarinet jazz rules
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Crudbringer:

pyramids with rings. In the fourth dimension.
  10:43am Kpx:

@crud, seems apropos for someone who is fond of cats.
Avatar 10:43am Malcolm:

yeaaah lanquidity!
  10:43am David in London:

Saw Sun Ra in Liverpool in 1990, and it was the best gig of my life. A truly magical evening. Ian McCulloch of Echo & the Bunnymen was sitting in front of me, but luckily the seating was so steep that his massive hairdo didn’t obscure the proceedings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Greg from ZONE 5:

Morning, Trouble & all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Blacktooth:

Tripped out on this Sun-Ra set. Some tunes I'm familiar with. Some not. Absolutely LOVING this long groovy-funky "that's how I feel." Never heard this side of RA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Crudbringer:

I saw E&BM in St. Louis in 1991. It was the first concert I ever went to and I hated it but I bought a long lost t-shirt anyhow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Threemoons:

Me three RE loving this Sun Ra. Need it today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Handy Haversack:

Hey, Greg!
Avatar 10:48am Mike & Dusty:

I dig it, I dig it all
Avatar 10:50am Trouble:

@blacktooth: listening to that cut i thought of kamasi washington...
  10:50am I mark:

I’m very confused. Why is WFMU in my cell phone? Space was the place.
  10:52am Harlem Muse:

Space is the Place! I heart Saturnian Queen Space June. Thanks for taking us to another world Trouble!
  10:53am I mark:

I was born on the southside of Chicago but I had never heard of sun re until I moved.
I met a guy worked at tower records in Philadelphia he said he played guitar with the band
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Blacktooth:

@Trouble: Indeed! Kamasi is a modern artist continuing the traditions of space-exploration through music. I'm a sucker for those places where the jazz & funk do the doe-si-doe.
  10:54am I mark:

I don’t know if this is a request or a suggestion but there is a new Nicole Mitchell space thing based on the work of Octavia Butler earth seed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Irene Trudel:

I'm loving this Sun Ra journey through space and time today.
Avatar 10:57am Trouble:

glad you are along for the ride @ irene
Avatar 10:59am Malcolm:

great set thanks trouble
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Adrian in London:

Really enjoying this set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Passaic River Blues:

What a set--perfect closing with "Languidity."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am karlward:

That was a dope hour
Avatar 11:05am duke:

I keep getting phone calls. I have to go back to archives to get that set looks wonderful.
Swag For Life Member 11:06am alexapharm:

omg Providence luv!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am juan:

Thank you, trouble, for this wondrous set of Sun Ra. He has been much on my mind lately
Swag For Life Member 11:07am alexapharm:

My first shows were at Lupo's too. <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Yes:

lovely sounds, trouble. thank you
Avatar 11:08am Trouble:

merci! Glad you all enjoyed the magic of sun ra!
  11:10am I mark:

There’s a book from 2009 by John Corbett pathway to unknown worlds. John also arranged for Alton Abraham’s papers to be archived at u Chicago. Didn’t know the Sun Ra Providence connection.
Avatar 11:13am Marcel M:

@Trouble: did you have pa amb tomàquet with your tortilla?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Webhamster Henry:

Thursday Morning is the home of Sun Ra, Alice Coltrane and Nina Simone. These are musicians that are most like French bird calls.
Avatar 11:16am Fredericks:

Irwin has a connection to Sun Ra, too.
Avatar 11:18am Trouble:

@i mark: saw that fantastic show at the ICA in philly, i have the book, it was the catalog.
No marcel, sadly we didn't. i wouldn't eat a tomato like that until i saw it grow out of the ground.
Avatar 11:20am Trouble:

@frederiks, irwin's connection to sun ra is only in working on reissuing a few releases, within the past years.
Avatar 11:21am Marcel M:

@Trouble: You just gotta use the small juicy ones. You only rub them on the bread. Thats what the Catalonians do. Goes amazingly well with tortilla. Add some manchego and jamon iberico and ohhhh baby!
  11:24am Dean:

I thought Irwin was the executor of the Sun Ra estate.
Avatar 11:25am Marcel M:

@Dean: I think he does own the licensing on behalf of the estate or something like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Handy Haversack:

@Marcel: Oh hotsie motsie, yeah. Pan amb tomatje? Probably butchering the spelling. But I could eat it all day. As a vegetarian, when we visit our friend in Barcelona, sometimes I do! (And tortilla, which I love.)

@p20, if you're still here, do you subscribe to Salvage? If so, you probably have seen the editorial collective's latest "Dispatch from a Changing World." If not, you might appreciate it. The article is paywalled for a time for nonsubscribers, though.
Avatar 11:26am Mike & Dusty:

Wow, what a song, Blue Boy...at first my ears thought it was a band that made a career of flitting between él Records and Sarah. (...maybe they did?)
Avatar 11:27am Marcel M:

@Handy: My wife is from Barcelona so we basically live on it. And also get it constantly when there!
Avatar 11:28am Marcel M:

@Handy: "pan y tomate," is the Spanish, but its really a Catalan thing. Their spelling is, "pa amb tomàquet"
Avatar 11:29am Marcel M:

I just had it for breakfast!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Handy Haversack:

@Marcel. So. Jealous.

Maybe I'll rough out some Haversackian equivalent later on, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am steveo:

is it too early to say what a magically wonderful show this has been? (If so, please delete this comment;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am karlward:

You've been listening to This is the Dope World with Trouble.
Avatar 11:33am Marcel M:

@Handy: Yeah I mean I just did it on sliced whole grain bread, hah. But it still tastes great on virtually any bread.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am karlward:

People still say "dope" right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Mr. Pumpy:

Handy, I'm cooking Brussels sprouts tonight. I'm trying to help quelch any feelings of envy...
Avatar 11:35am JakeGould:

@karlward: Dope as a verb is kinda like a non-ironic “groovy.”
  11:35am Dean:

A local restaurant serves matrimonio, a Spanish toasted bread topped with anchovies. Out of this world.
Avatar 11:36am Mike & Dusty:

I missed most of last week’s show, and the first half of today’s (me and Dusty found a quiet field by the East River to throw a ball around and we just...kept doing that), so I settled in from the latter parts of the Sun Ra set, and...wow it’s such a good feeling to listen to a handful of songs in a sequence and just feel like you are in the company of Someone Good.
Avatar 11:37am Trouble:

merci for the kind words! happy to make some calm inside the belly of the beast
Avatar 11:37am Mike & Dusty:

dope as a verb? I use it adjectivally often enough. Don’t dope me, bro.
Avatar 11:37am Marcel M:

@Dean: oh yeah... damn good!!! The last time we were in Spain we visited the Basque Country and went to a small costal town famous for their anchovies... my mouth is watering just thinking about it... Its hard to find proper Spanish food in the US.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Blues Mandinga:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Itzall Hear:

JakeGould, wouldn't that more accurately be used as an adjective? "Trouble's DOPE show", for instance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Handy Haversack:

Mr. P, I adore Brussels sprouts!

@Marcel: Do you ever have pickled asparagus with mayonnaise? Unreal. A salad!
Avatar 11:38am JakeGould:

I meant adjective; you know what I mean all you groovy dopes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am karlward:

Dope as a verb is all Ivan Drago.
Avatar 11:39am Marcel M:

@Handy: I have not! It sounds.... strange. But I would def. try it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Mr. Pumpy:

Damn...my plan backfired.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am karlward:

Dope as a verb is all Lance Armstrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Itzall Hear:

What. We havehere... is FAY-Yure. To c'myune-kate!
Avatar 11:40am JakeGould:

Nobody pickles asparagus in mayo.
Avatar 11:42am JakeGould:

ZZ Top is a decent band.
Avatar 11:43am JakeGould:

ZZ Top is groovy dope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Mr. Pumpy:

@Handy, I'm roasting them in Pine-Sol and drizzling with an ipecac reduction. They will be finished with a sprinkle of sawdust from old Wolmanized wood. Don't be jealous.
  11:44am Dean:

@Marcel M: I've only had the dish at the local restaurant. Would love to enjoy it in Basque country.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Handy Haversack:

As if I wasn't making myself hungry enough, now Trouble has me thinking of the Tres Amigos gatefold and the FEAST within!

Mayo was invented in Menorca, a Catalan island in the Balearics. The French occupied it for a while and claimed it, but it's Mahon sauce. That island is paradise! Mayo, cheese, horses, tomato-garlic soup, and the densest concentration of Bronze Age ruins in the Mediterranean. Oh, and 300 beaches.

Mr. P, I'm making Bagel Bites in a deconstructed Hot Pocket reduction with a Doritos glaze. I just want to eat *my* food, you know?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Doug in JC:

This is one of those albums that I am just always in the mood for no matter what I'm doing. Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Doug in JC:

And ketchup is from Vietnam!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Mr. Pumpy:

Handy...preaching to the choir, baby!
  11:50am Dean:

For dessert, bananas Picasso.
Avatar 11:51am JakeGould:

Goya… Oh Boy-a!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am melinda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am joe mulligan:

I had a crush on Suzanne Ciani when she appeared on "3-2-1-Contact" tv show during the 80s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Handy Haversack:

Another wonderful show, Trouble. Thanks so much -- and Skeleton Matt, too! Very glad to have been in this world for three hours!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks for the ascendant dopage today, Trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am melinda:

@joe I loved 3-2-1 Contact.
Avatar 11:55am Glorious Estephonic:

so happy i saw Suzanne Ciani perform in a church
Avatar 11:55am Pale Son:

@joe Yes! She doped my mind! :)
Avatar 11:55am JakeGould:

@KenFromHydePark: You still interested in the Coney Island Beach sand?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am listener james from westwood:

She did the music for that show?! Wow! All the more reason why I dug it then. Plus I see how it seeded me for later Ciani appreciation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am mariano:

I feel like I'm in a Greenaway flick ;)
Avatar 11:57am JakeGould:

@ListenerJames: She appeared on the show demonstrating synths; she did nothing with the shows music directly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am listener 126464:

Thank you Trouble!
Avatar 11:59am Pale Son:

Thanks, Trouble et al.!
Avatar 11:59am JakeGould:
