After reading about Stray: There was an Iron Maiden cover of "All In Your Mind"? I've never listened to any Iron Maiden on purpose, so I'm curious whether that could be good.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21am Mr. Pumpy:

McGroovey, I've listened to a lot of Iron Maiden on purpose. I think it is a good cover, but I like to hear Maiden doing their originals more. Even as an Iron Maiden fan, I find it bit lacking. It is devoid of vocal harmonies as it is only Dickinson singing, and the production doesn't translate well. Like the chopping down on the octaves in the beginning...doesn't pump me up like in the Stray version.

Happy (post) Birthday Tom!
hey Mr.P mariano spodi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25am Mr. Pumpy:

mariano, when I was young...or I should say where I lived, and quite possibly the world over, there was a huge divide at one point between Maiden fans and Priest fans. It was silly. I was true to Priest in those moments, but loved Maiden as well. Do you remember such nonsense?
Avatar 12:28am spodiodi:

maiden was def more popular in my experience, mr pumpy (hey!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31am Mr. Pumpy:

spod...what up? I don't know who was more popular...that would be a tough call in the NYC area in the 80s...even up til now. But it was more like people were choosing sides back then. Maybe more people did go in for Maiden if pressed. But both were hugely popular.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32am McGroovey:

I have lots of Pretty Things, but I need some Elecrtic Bananas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35am mariano:

Huh, never heard of a Priest/Maiden rivalry. In my school it was ABC vs Haircut 100. Some pretty tough crowds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36am TomDash:

Electric Banana stuff rules - check out some YouTube clips, did some psychsploitation films and went under that pseudonym
Avatar 12:39am spodiodi:

  12:50am PJ:

The drums sound so good on Black Sea, what a great record.
Avatar 12:51am coelacanth∅:

Mr.Pumpy...to turn nothing into a long story,
when i "broke up" with my best friend, George ~7th grade, amongst other differences we did this:

punkrock<me ... George>metal

i hated the hype, the grandness, pretense of significance; i wanted to strip music to it's core.
once he was arguing with his new friend Oliver, 'maiden or... (?- metalica? slayer??) but then they both agreed, "no one messes with priest man"
anyway i was even more of a dick then than i am now so i said i think priest sucks. just to challenge them.
i'd never even heard judas priest! i just couldn't stand the way they were worshiping these pretentious bands.
i like some of them now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51am mariano:

YT also has the full movie that Electric Banana was in, 60s sex comedy called What's Good for the Goose (not vouching for it but the scene they're in is cool): www.youtube.com...
Avatar 12:51am coelacanth∅:

(jeez that's even longer than i thought)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53am McGroovey:

I first learned of the Electric Banana from the inner sleeve advertisements of the Butt Records records I got in the '80s (Mother Gong, Van der Graaf Generator side-project The Long Hello, the first Bill Nelson album), but I didn't know if they were good, and I hadn't yet heard the Pretty Things, so I didn't hear the Electric Bananas records. I just admired the covers.
Avatar 12:56am coelacanth∅:

if i didn't know before hearing the electric banana that it was the pretty things i don't know how many years would've passed before i'd give a band with that name a listen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56am Mr. Pumpy:

@coel...I hear that! I was fortunate enough to have a core group of some real music heads...so a good number of us took it all in, but that kind of situation is not completely lost on me!
Avatar 1:00am coelacanth∅:

you know, it was more the image of these bands that i didn't relate to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03am mariano:

This De Artsen reminds me a bit of a song by Terminal Lovers, "The Truth Between Errors". There's a band I haven't heard in ages, pretty sure I heard them here first.
Avatar 1:03am coelacanth∅:

Pumpy i guess i didn't have any friends into music as i was until 10th grade. (even then -not like i was)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08am Fuzzy:

Here's what I was listening to 10th-11th grade.

  1:16am Caliban:

Loving this show! What does one call this sort of guitar playing, fast, melodic, angsty but still tuneful.....? All the past few songs have that same awesome quality....rhythmic guitar picking that reminds me of old US soul songs sort of...thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17am mariano:

This Echo song is the one they played in Urgh! A Music War.
  1:25am rw:

Peppydancywavy guitar. Maybe that's what we will call it.
Avatar 1:27am Joe B:

show sounding great Tom, also belated happy birthday
  1:27am PJ:

Split Enz never quite made it to AOR radio in the early 80s, which was the only way a punk or new wave band was going to become successful in the US. Bands like Duran Duran that got heavy MTV play could cross over, don't know why it didn't happen to Enz. I saw them at a concert in Philly in the summer of 82, headliner was Squeeze (who were pretty big at the time), then Split Enz, Third World, Bush Tetras, and opening up was . . . Duran Duran!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29am TomDash:

Hey Thanks Joe! and rw, you're onto something...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30am ultradamno:

Missed The Pretty Things set due to connectivity issues, glad to see it up there though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32am ultradamno:

Love New Values too, not as much as Five Foot One, but still... twitter.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32am TomDash:

Hey ultrad - welcome...you can check the archive if you get a chance. fun/fuzz set...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33am TomDash:

Hey PJ - yeah thought Split Enz might have crossed over...they weren't as dreamy as Duran Duran though, ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33am ultradamno:

Wasn't it Split Enz that had that laser etched album? A interesting novelty that never really took off.
  1:34am rw:

New Values and Five Foot One are kind of the same song. Nice picture disc!!
  1:34am PJ:

The laser etched album was True Colors, the one that I Got You came from. I still don't know how they can get that hologram pattern in the vinyl without affecting the grooves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35am TomDash:

I know PJ! I just thought about that as I was spinning it now...crazy
Avatar 1:36am Joe B:

@PJ - I recall hearing I Got You quite extensively around here on AOR FM radio - WDHA in NJ and WNEW in NYC played it pretty heavily. as far as Duran Duran - yeah they did not catch on until that fall when the Rio album was re-released in November after a 12" remix EP had caught on in US dance clubs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38am ultradamno:

Styx had one of those too, I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39am Scott Williams:

Folks, say good mornin' to Carol! I'm passing the baton now, she'll be your Studio Ambassador til 9am.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39am Aitch:

Fine work Scott
Avatar 1:39am northguineahills:

Bye Scott, Hello Carol!
  1:40am PJ:

@TomDash: Duran Duran wasn't the kind of thing (Roxy influenced synth disco pop) the AOR stations in Philly would normally have played, but they were so massive on MTV that I think they couldn't avoid it. Split Enz, I think, peaked a little early for I Got You to help them get the AOR radio airplay, at least in the Philly area, where I was. I did hear I Got You on the radio, but only a few times. If they had had a bigger song after that things might have been different. But in Philly, at least, the stations were very resistant to anything vaguely punk or new wave and only a handful of acts got much airplay, and there were plenty of major label bands (the Jam was probably the biggest) who never got any airplay at all.
  1:42am PJ:

For most of my high school days, the college radio stations could barely be heard through the static, so I had to learn about most new music from reading the Village Voice, the NY Times, and, after I found it later on, Trouser Press.
Avatar 1:42am Hubig Pie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42am Ken From Hyde Park:

Seems we need someone to reformulate the Bob & Earl song (or the Rolling Stones version) to introduce the "Skeleton Shuffle."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43am ultradamno:

KROQ sucking is trending right now. I don't know much about the situation. It's a commercial station, isn't it?
  1:43am rw:

Did I miss the bagpipes, or are we not there yet? Love that iconic Miles Davis trumpet sound from this era.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43am ultradamno:

I know that one of those Rodney comps is where I first heard Minutemen though.
Avatar 1:44am Joe B:

KROQ booted Rodney Bingenheimer years ago after marginalizing him for a decade or so before that so not sure how good they could have been lately
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44am TomDash:

rw - funny he played sax on that track! Know for bagpipes though...
  1:44am PJ:

The point of my rambling is that it was difficult to hear new music that didn't sound like Sammy Hagar or Journey on commercial radio at that time.
  1:45am rw:

Is KROQ still on the air? I remember them starting to suck when I was in Junior High.

I'm kind of proud of myself, I'm pretty sure I know what a Tame Impala is.

I remember seeing Scratch Acid at BBQ restaurant in Broadripple and Yow pulled chocolate pudding (yes it was, shut up) out of the back of his pants and splattered it everywhere. There was a plate glass window to the street and kids were out there and they and Yow mimicked each for awhile.

Tom, were you messing with me or am I just inept? From what I can glean from the interweb, Miles plays trumpet on that track. Not that it really matters. Just a little baffled. The song sounded amazing. LOVE that era Davis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09am TomDash:

rw - no I was saying Rufus Harley usually plays bagpipes but on the track I played (before Miles) he was playing the sax...MILES was indeed playing trumpet on the Bitches Brew track!
  2:10am rw:

Oh! Okay. That makes sense. It's all coming together... Thanks!
  2:11am PJ:
