FYI: Today's playlist image is Joan Miro's "Constellation Awakening at Dawn," from 1941.
  11:57am Dean:

That is beautiful.
Avatar 11:58am Tony Coulter:

Hey, Dean!
  12:00pm Dean:

G'morning. My family, all but me, is in your neck of the woods these days.

Portland keeps pulling them back!
Avatar 12:03pm Sem:

Hello, Tony, dean.
What we need is Joan Miro-inspired ice cream.
What delciousness it would be.
Avatar 12:03pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, Sem!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Yvang:

Nice surprise to hear a bonus Tony Coulter's set on the Hipsters Suck's last night!
Avatar 12:06pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, hiya, Cmurtha and ynod!
Avatar 12:06pm ynod:

and Cmurtha of course
Avatar 12:06pm Sem:

Who earth.nullschool.net... has seen the wind?

I know, I know!
Avatar 12:07pm Tony Coulter:

@ Yvang: So you heard it! I guess the time was doable for Europeans, unlike East Coast U.S.'ers....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Yvang:

To be honest I listened to the archive but it's usually 8 or 9 am in my place when it airs...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Stanley:

Avatar 12:10pm Tony Coulter:

S' Tan Lee!
Avatar 12:11pm ynod:

Where in Europe do you hail from, Yvang?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm chresti:

Hi Tony and forks!
Avatar 12:13pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Chresti!
  12:14pm Yvang:

@ynod: Brittany France
  12:15pm Dean:

I was absolutely certain that String Driven Thing contributed a track to a 1975 Charisma sampler, Beyond an Empty Dream. Checked discogs: nope.
Avatar 12:15pm ynod:

@Yvang- Home of my ancestors!
Avatar 12:17pm StringOFperils:

Another chip off the surface of absolute certainty.
Avatar 12:17pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, StringOFperils! (Funny handle, btw)
  12:19pm Yvang:

@ynod: perhaps we are cousins. I see a similarity in the name already.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm chresti:

This is my last Tuesday off, I think.
Avatar 12:21pm ynod:

@Yvang~ C'est possible!
Avatar 12:21pm Tony Coulter:

@ chresti: That's both good and bad, I guess....
  12:22pm Dean:

Aha! Now I see why I thought SDT were on that comp: they did appear on another Charisma comp, The Famous Charisma Label 5th Anniversary.
Avatar 12:23pm Tony Coulter:

Hard to say who my ancestors are, given that each of my grandparents came from (or had their roots in) a different country. I am a mongrel through and through.
Avatar 12:24pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Tony and all
Avatar 12:24pm StringOFperils:

This String Driven Thing material sounds a lot more compelling than I remember it being, way back when. I'm a different listener now.
Avatar 12:24pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Coel!
Avatar 12:25pm Tony Coulter:

@ StringOFperils: Their records took a real nose dive after this one -- the later ones are pretty terrible, imo.
Avatar 12:26pm ynod:

Doesn't one of their albums have a wild Hipgnosis cover?
Avatar 12:27pm StringOFperils:

That would explain it. I think they started groping their way toward bad early metal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Santos L. Halper:

Used to have this SDT LP cut up for wall decoration back at school, will have to pull out and give it a spin...
Avatar 12:28pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, hey, Santos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm WR:

Greetings all. That is a beautiful Miro.
Avatar 12:29pm Tony Coulter:

@ Ynod: This one, you mean? www.discogs.com...

Unfortunately, that one is not one of their good records.
Avatar 12:29pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, WR!
Avatar 12:31pm ynod:

@Tony- That's not the sleeve I was remembering, but it sure looks like their style.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm WR:

Sem, that wind world view is beautiful and scary.
  12:37pm Dean:

Tony, do you know the Swiss prog band Flame Dream? On one of their albums, 1981's Out in the Dark, they added an American guitarist, Dale Hauskins, who used to hang out in the Southern California record store where I worked in the late '70s. I visited Dale at home once or twice, where he demonstrated his chops and his abiding affection for Allan Holdsworth. Hearing the album, you can sense the influence. Dale was also a big Hillage fan, even flew to London to hang out with him.
Avatar 12:38pm Tony Coulter:

I know the name, and I think I have heard them -- but it's been years, so I can't honestly say I remember what they sound like.
Avatar 12:39pm Tony Coulter:

Although you just told me what they sound like....
  12:39pm wendy del formaggio:

Hello Tony!
  12:40pm Dean:

They sound like Selling England era Genesis, but with Holdsworth sitting in.
Avatar 12:40pm Tony Coulter:

Wendy! Wendy! Wendy!
Avatar 12:40pm Franco Twinkie:

Hi Tony. When I was little, my grandmother had some drapes that must have been inspired by that Miro painting. They were made of bark cloth, a very heavy nubbly fabric.
  12:41pm Dean:

Maybe Miro was inspired by the drapes, Franco?
Avatar 12:41pm Franco Twinkie:

You think?
  12:41pm wendy del formaggio:

It’s lovely to get such a greeting. Thank you.
  12:41pm Dean:

I'm no art historian, that's for sure.
Avatar 12:42pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Franco T!
Avatar 12:51pm Tony Coulter:

The drummer for Fun Time Objects (on now) is none other than FMU's own TomDash (of DotDash Radio fame)
Avatar 12:56pm Will in Bloomington:

the miro painting reminds me of an ikea shower curtain that was in my bathroom when i was a kid. had weird animal shapes on it
Avatar 12:57pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Will!

The painting that launched a thousand drapes and shower curtains....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Doug Schulkind:

Hello, Tony and company!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm chresti:

Also, sofas and chairs..
Avatar 1:00pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Commander Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm WR:

Ok. I guess I am neither hip or non-hip but cannot figure out what broadcast stream is being referred to in " a bonus Tony Coulter's set on the Hipsters Suck's".
  1:00pm Dean:

I've often wondered why Edward Kienholz never achieved the same level of influence on interior design.
  1:01pm Yvang:

RIP Michel Piccoli. Huge actor with a huge filmography.
Avatar 1:05pm Tony Coulter:

@ WR: I did a guest set last night for a Portland radio show called "Hipster's Suck," hosted by Thom Jones/DDDJJJ666, who has filled in for me a bunch of times. Here's an archive of the show: www.mixcloud.com...
  1:05pm Yvang:

@WR : DDDJJJ666's Hipsters Suck on Xray FM
Avatar 1:06pm Tony Coulter:

Thom's show is on XRAY FM.
  1:06pm Yvang:

Sometimes doing fill ins here
Avatar 1:07pm Franco Twinkie:

I can think of one person Kienholz seemed to influence - John Waters. When I first saw Female Trouble in 1975, I was awed and delighted to see that he seemed to get stuff out of the trash for set decoration.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Listener Bob in PGH:

Greetings! Work got in the way as is so typical.
Avatar 1:10pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Bob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm doctorjazz:

Hi Tony and all you out there!
Avatar 1:12pm Tony Coulter:

Forgot to mention that the music for that Romy Schneider & Michel Piccoli track in the last set was composed by Philippe Sarde, who has written a lot of very fine soundtrack music.
Avatar 1:13pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Doctor J!
Avatar 1:28pm TDK60:

Avatar 1:30pm Tony Coulter:

Hello, hello, TDK60!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm doctorjazz:

Like this Wizards From Kansas track!
Avatar 1:55pm TDK60:

Clever name.
Avatar 1:56pm Tony Coulter:

What does it mean?!
Avatar 1:57pm coelacanth∅:

my band would be "scarecrows from kansas"
Avatar 1:59pm Tony Coulter:

@ TDK60: Did you mean La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros was a clever name ... or The Wizards from Kansas? The latter I don't need an explanation for....
Avatar 1:59pm Tony Coulter:

I see La Maquina's name means "The Bird-Making Machine"
Avatar 2:00pm TDK60:

The Wizards; appears to reference Oz.
Avatar 2:01pm Tony Coulter:

Got ya.
Avatar 2:01pm spodiodi:

hi Tony Coulter!
hi everybody!
Avatar 2:01pm Tony Coulter:

Warning: Excessive progging out ahead.
  2:01pm Dean:

An allusion to Paul Klee's famous "Twittering Machine"?
Avatar 2:02pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: That's what I'm thinking....
Avatar 2:03pm Tony Coulter:

High Low, spodiodi!
Avatar 2:06pm coelacanth∅:

...or the wind-up bird chronicles but it came before that... but it reminds me of when someone i know was making origami cranes for days
Avatar 2:06pm coelacanth∅:

hey spodi
Avatar 2:08pm TDK60:

I'll keep my eyes squinted for any prog police comin' over the prairie.
Avatar 2:13pm coelacanth∅:

prog 5-0 right across the way, looking around but they can't tell where the violation is originating.
heh, right under their noses
Avatar 2:15pm Tony Coulter:

This, of course, is a side-long suite.
Avatar 2:42pm spodiodi:

everybody is ok
Avatar 2:43pm Tony Coulter:

Despite a heavy immersion in prog, you mean? Whew....
Avatar 2:50pm TDK60:

Yes, the roadies have piled the organ, Moog, drums, gong, guitars, amps into the prog wagon train and pulled off across the dusty plain.
Avatar 2:52pm Sem:

Taking me way back, Tony, to the before times. Hairless chin, stars in the eyes, and a full head of hair.
Thanks, see you and all next time.
