Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks so much for D:Oing here!

Great to turn on the radio and hear the perfect man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Jeff Golick:

Hello, @hyde!
Thanks for letting me d:o it, @Doug!
@Listener Gregory: say it again for my wife, please?
  9:09am David Dichelle:

I'm walking outside and can't tell which birds are actually here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @David Dichelle! I think a dog was just barking outside my window, but I'm not 100% sure.
Avatar 9:11am hyde:

this is really nice
Avatar 9:13am Sem:

Good morning, and hello, Jeff, and jazzists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am ParUbi:

Hey guys, good morning Jeff
Avatar 9:16am DJpeterDE:

The Takagi put me in mid of that "suburban sound collage" guy that you played, maybe during pledge drive? I guess before? Who was that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Jeff Golick:

Hey, there, and good morning, @Sem and @ParUbi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Jeff Golick:

Me, too, @DJpeterDE! That was Ernest Hood's Neighborhoods.

Hi Outmost-essess!!Hi Let there be trombones!!
Avatar 9:19am DJpeterDE:

Thanks Jeff!
Now this Hino puts me in mind of Shorter's All-Seeing Eye but with a Strata East groove.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Jeff Golick:

@WR! Welcome aboard!
@Wolfie: wassup, brother. I hear you got big plans for today's Klub?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am doctorjazz:

Hi folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Jeff Golick:

Hi, @doctorjazz! New photo there?
Avatar 9:24am Hungry Like the Wolfgang:

Yessiree, JG. Just the right overdose of Jackie Mclean today on his should-be 89th B-Day at Klub Storke. Hope everyone has a hankerin' for horns today. This piece is whettin' me appetite! I gotta check out more Hino.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am doctorjazz:

Yup, that's the other pooch (Maxie, my daughter's) showing off her musical talent (has to new enlarged).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am doctorjazz:

(...haa to be enlarged...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Jeff Golick:

Super heavy piano separation in the cans on this one. All left channel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am doctorjazz:

I prefer that to having the left hand on one side, the right in the other (which is what usually happens)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am doctorjazz:

Talk about an odds headphone mix..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am doctorjazz:

Is that correct?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Jeff Golick:

Yeah there's a LOT going on in this one.
Avatar 9:41am spodiodi:

good morning, Jeff!
same to everybody!
doctorjazz, i love your icon!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Jeff Golick:

Warm greetings, @spodiodi!
Avatar 9:44am Hungry Like the Wolfgang:

spodi!! We got a hornucopia for ya today!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am WR:

Perfect sounds for my next phase, repairing the stopper mechanism for the bathroom sink.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Jeff Golick:

You should quickly trademark "hornucopia," @Stork. It's too good to get away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am doctorjazz:

Thanks, Spodiodi! Hi!
Can you do mine next, WR?
Avatar 9:46am spodiodi:

Avatar 9:47am spodiodi:

Avatar 9:48am spodiodi:

happy early b-day, doctorjazz! may you get all the doggy licks tomorrow .
hello, StringO
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Jeff Golick:

Every once in a while our (one) bathroom sink starts draining very slowly and it's my job to remove the stopper and rid it of the hair-sludge that has accumulated around it. This is the one sink/plumbing thing I know how to do.
  9:48am Listener Gregory:

I can say from experience that if you're going to yell at eels, you're going to have to be louder than that.
  9:49am DJpeterDE:

Teitelbaum’s birthday is Tuesday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Jeff Golick:

Happy early birthday, @doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Jeff Golick:

Hadn't realized that, @DJpeterDE. I had pulled this a few weeks back, when he passed. Are you playing RT on your next show?
Avatar 9:51am StringOFperils:

The Earlier Sao Paulo Underground recording made me think of the Teitelbaum/Braxton records.....the timbral overlap/interchange of reeds and electronics
  9:51am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, I got a plastic snake thing, really just a narrow stick with a few "branches" on it, which you push down the drain. When you pull it up, all the sludge and hair comes with it. Then you must decide whether you would just rather push that stuff back in the drain, because it is pretty gross.
Avatar 9:52am spodiodi:

Gregory, and don't get the electric ones excited, eh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Jeff Golick:

Oh it's completely disgusting, @LG. I make a point of showing everyone in the apartment what goes on down there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am doctorjazz:

Thanks... I don't know now to remove the stopper, but I have a thin, narrow, sharp dental appliance that fits under and pulls a lot of the grunge out.
Avatar 9:53am spodiodi:

i use one of these for the tub drain external-content.duckduckgo.com...
Avatar 9:53am spodiodi:

  9:54am Listener Gregory:

Jeff, yes, everyone who lives there must appreciate the disgust to its fullest.
Avatar 9:54am spodiodi:

i wrap the excavated hairy blob in a bunch of tp and hide in the trash (then i barf)

Avatar 9:58am spodiodi:

Bon Appétit, ParUbi
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am doctorjazz:

Somehow, my birthday and barfing got all mixed together...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Jeff Golick:

Just go easy on the cake and ice cream and you'll be fine. Work going okay so far, @doc?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am doctorjazz:

Love Michael Moore- The drums here are pretty interesting...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am doctorjazz:

It's OK, I suppose, weird mix of hectic and slow. Much anxiety out there...
Avatar 10:01am StringOFperils:

Met Gerry Hemingway once back in the late 80s. Really nice guy.
Avatar 10:02am spodiodi:

ParUbi, i like your new avatar/icon, and the previous spinning polygon icons as well. do you make them yourself? i'm guessing yes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Jeff Golick:

Barre Phillips -- do we say "Barry?" Or "Barr?"
  10:04am DJpeterDE:

@jeff yes featuring some RT on Tuesday also Cecil McBee.
Avatar 10:04am StringOFperils:

I enjoyed the new escapades in plumbing segment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Doug Schulkind:

I say Barr, you say toe-MAH-toe.
  10:05am DJpeterDE:

I used to swear by these zipper things to get hair Out of the drain and then one broke and now it’s still there and probably making things worse by catching everything and I’m going to have to move because there’s no other solution
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Jeff Golick:

We also had a clogged toilet incident this past week. I won't get into it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am doctorjazz:

Bar is what I've read.
Avatar 10:06am spodiodi:

just try to wait those out, Jeff
  10:07am Listener Gregory:

Barre, VT is "barry." People tell me that Wilkes-Barre is "bar." I don't need to believe them, though.

Avatar 10:09am spodiodi:

Avatar 10:13am spodiodi:

DJpeterDE, i can't think of one. same situation here with cleaning in general. time to move
Avatar 10:15am Hungry Like the Wolfgang:

Wow, so beuatiful. Thanks for spinning this Mal/Jackie tune, Jeff! More from this pair later on the Jackie-thon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Jeff Golick:

Yah, going to be difficult not to double up on you, @Stork.
  10:18am DJpeterDE:

Waldron’s chords somehow make McLean sound even sharper (tarter)
Avatar 10:19am spodiodi:

no kraftwerk overlap anticipated
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @DJpeterDE. I like how the different tones of Bartz and McLean are really evident on this blues number.
  10:20am Listener Gregory:

McLean sometimes has a way of the alto sounding like a soprano, which is not my favorite. The "I Loves You, Porgy" definitely has that.
Avatar 10:20am StringOFperils:

I'm ready for a Little Richard-and/or-Kraftwerk-free day at this point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am doctorjazz:

I believe McLean actually plays a bit sharp (tonally), deliberately, to get that edge.
Avatar 10:21am spodiodi:

man, i LOVE both (especially kraftwerk), but me too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Jeff Golick:

I'm now imagining a cross-over musical called "You Better Werk."
Avatar 10:22am spodiodi:

lol, JG
Avatar 10:22am StringOFperils:

@spodi...the same. big fan, but ODing already.
Avatar 10:24am StringOFperils:

The tragic burden over over-abundance.
Avatar 10:24am spodiodi:

first world problems
  10:25am Listener Gregory:

McLean's alto here is much more to my taste. I know someone is keeping score.
Avatar 10:27am spodiodi:

rather, best-radio-station-in-the-world problem
  10:27am rw:

Good morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Jeff Golick:

Hiya, @rw!
Avatar 10:30am hyde:

I just had a huge sneezing fit. Might be allergic to Jackie Maclean, sadly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Jeff Golick:

Uh oh, @hyde! Maybe you can build up a tolerance today!
Avatar 10:31am spodiodi:

here's hoping, Gregory
good morning, rw
gesundheit, hyde (sure it's not that cat? guessing you're sure)
Avatar 10:31am Hungry Like the Wolfgang:

Bull Frog!!Another GREAT tune that's not gonna be in the Marathon. Goes to show how much fine material was left on the Stork Club cutting-room floor.
Avatar 10:32am hyde:

@spodiodi hah. Pretty sure it's actually a pollen thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Doug Schulkind:

Iconic sound here. Gospel-flecked, soul-infused.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am doctorjazz:

And What If I Don't came to mind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Jeff Golick:

Let's play "guess the trumpet player" here.
Avatar 10:33am spodiodi:

yeah, doug-MAH-toe! i like it
Avatar 10:33am Hungry Like the Wolfgang:

@hyde: today you will acquire McLean immunity
  10:33am Listener Gregory:

That is a great classic (Bull Frog). I'm not sure the title is correct, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am doctorjazz:

Love the album, New and Old Gospel...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Hail, yeah! Greetings, Jeff and OUTsters!
Avatar 10:34am spodiodi:

aloha, GrannyST!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Jeff Golick:

Ayo! @Granny Spicy Tuna! How you!?
Avatar 10:35am Hungry Like the Wolfgang:

Old Gospel - OK, this oneWILLl be on replay today! But what a tune! Ornette bravely tackling the trumpet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Jeff Golick:

@spodiodi with the quick'n'witty avatar image change-up!
  10:36am Listener Gregory:

Is it Ornette? (wild stab) or at least Don Cherry.
Avatar 10:36am spodiodi:

8^D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

@spodiodi: top o' the stream to you!
@Jeff, i slept well, have tea in the cupboard and the kettle on, and the WFMU crew is bringing these glorious sounds into my space—feeling good
How is you?
Avatar 10:36am Hungry Like the Wolfgang:

Ornette. He got a lotta criticism for changing instruments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Uncle Michael:

Good morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am doctorjazz:

Ornette's trumpet, and violin playing even more so, is very much an in your face kind of move, me'thinks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Jeff Golick:

It IS Ornette, @LG!

@GST: doing okay, right at the moment! It's the rest of the week I worry about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am chresti:

Morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Jeff Golick:

Yo, @Uncle Michael! Yo, @chresti!
Avatar 10:38am spodiodi:

good morning, Uncle Michael, chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Doug Schulkind:

Makes me want to re-read my copy of A.B. Spellman's Black Music, Four Lives. It was later re-packaged as Four Lives in the Bebop Business, an insipid title given that its four subjects are McLean, Ornette, Cecil Taylor, and Herbie Nichols.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

@Jeff, yeah, i hear you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Doug Schulkind:

I've always railed at the new title, but then recently I read that A.B. Spellman actually wanted that to be the original title.

What the hell does he know?!
Avatar 10:39am StringOFperils:

Ornette's dedication to doing the opposite of whatever was customary is very interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Jeff Golick:

Don't really know this piano player: LaMont Johnson
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Jeff Golick:

YES, @StringOFperils. Admirable, even.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Uncle Michael:

Jeff, you need to consider the use of playlist images.

i0.wp.com...
  10:41am Listener Gregory:

This was about the height of Ornette's trumpet playing, I think. Elsewhere it's used mostly for short solos or accents. I have the album, so my guess was half memory, half inference.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am doctorjazz:

Ornette's actually not bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Jeff Golick:

Ha, @Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Jeff Golick:

@UM: I'll leave that for Stork!
  10:43am Listener Gregory:

And I like the "Bebop Business" title! It sets the stage for thinking about music as a commercial enterprise.
Avatar 10:43am spodiodi:

lol, UM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Wouldn't it be something to be that not bad?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am doctorjazz:

I've read that it's actually quite difficult playing both sax and trumpet, in terms of embouchure, the demands are very different. Benny Carter was able to pull it off until he got older, then had to give up the trumpet.
Avatar 10:44am StringOFperils:

PufNstuff's head looks like a burger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am chresti:

Good morning, spodiodi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Jeff Golick:

Someone's hungry...
Avatar 10:45am DJpeterDE:

Johnson's first albums were all with McLean. The only other Blue Note he's on is Mobley's "Reach Out" (Motown covers). Looks like he has some albums as a leader in the 1970s-80s-90s I've never heard them -- self released
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

LaMont Johnson also plays on Jackie's 'Bout Soul LP. One of my all-time favorite recordings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Jeff Golick:

I love that record, too, @Doug, and also have a crush on the cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Jeff Golick:

Tony Williams kind of changed the sound of jazz in the 60s?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am ParUbi:

@spodiodi @10:02 -- nope, I didn't make these gif avatars, but that's a great idea! I do work in a related medium, so it's worth a shot
Avatar 10:52am DJpeterDE:

I have the 1987 CD reissue of this album... it's misbanded and that's why you actually heard the end of the alternate take of "Saturday and Sunday" at the beginning of "Frankenstein." (Of course I had to re-edit the CD and burn a "corrected" edition.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

Gotta go walk the d:og. Will bring you al:ong!
Avatar 10:53am StringOFperils:

A dog's Destination is always OUT.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Jeff Golick:

Oh shit, @DJpeterDE! Fascinating! I will have to do the same.
Avatar 10:54am DJpeterDE:

re: 'Bout Soul's cover, it's just occurring to me now that it's from an era when BN was using Kwame Braithwaite models (i.e., black women with "natural" hair) so wondering who choose "straightened" hair models for certain covers...
  10:57am Listener Gregory:

@SOp, very true.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Uncle Michael:

I'm determined to get a photo of the rose-breasted grosbeak if it visits the oriole feeder. There's an app for that.

Avatar 11:00am spodiodi:

nice to know the origin of destination: OUT with Jeff Golick! (thank you for the edutainment!)
Avatar 11:02am StringOFperils:

@UM..the rose-breasted grosbeak is quite striking in appearance. We don't get those up here. I did see an Oriole once about three or four years ago. They have a flight layover here I think...they just flirt with the idea of north.
Avatar 11:02am spodiodi:

UM, that looks cool: my sec cam catches: pigeons, doves, crows, cats, raccoons, and homo sapiens ( i should make a highlight reel )
Avatar 11:03am spodiodi:

of course, it's all been shot through a security gate/bars
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Uncle Michael:

I have orioles out the proverbial wazoo.
  11:04am Listener Gregory:

Actually, this is a good transition, Jeff, because the opening blast of the alto has some of that McLean sound. But speaking of transitions, I have to go on my walk before lunch, so I'm tuning out. Thanks! Will catch up on the archive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

I say YEAH
Avatar 11:06am StringOFperils:

@ListenerGregory....Enjoy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Jeff Golick:

Take care, and happy trails, @LG!
Avatar 11:08am spodiodi:

cheers, Gregory
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am doctorjazz:

I've been curious about Pat Thomas music...for his Ellington/Oto album (after hearing it here), which I really liked. Cool stuff! (Cafe Oto is one of many venues sending out SOS emails concerning their financial viability in the current climate).
Avatar 11:18am Wolfgang:

This track is messing with my teeny mind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Jeff Golick:

The group's decision to call themselves MILESDAVISQUINTET! doesn't help.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Jeff Golick:

Kinda reminds me of Dawn of Midi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

I think I burned double the calories walking the dog to ADA w/Pat Thomas. Thanks, D:O!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Jeff Golick:

I'll have to try that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

what the holy @&%$!$@! YEAH!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am doctorjazz:

This is pretty crazy (and the band's name DOES make it crazier).
Gotta run, brave the Supermarket!
Thanks, Jeff, great stuff!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Jeff Golick:

Same, @GST! I noticed recently I have over 2,000 items in my wishlist. Errr... This set is all recent Bandcamp pick ups.
Avatar 11:42am spodiodi:

what did that Dustin Laurenzi piece remind me of? what's that tune?

@JG holy heck you have 2700 things in your wishlist!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

@Jeff: it may lead to my downfall, but i'm now following you on bandcamp, heh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Jeff Golick:

It's all good! (I hope.)

@spodiodi: it's a Moondog composition, so maybe you've heard another version?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):
