The chances of anyone ID'ing today's mystery LP-under-the-cassettes are very low, so I'll just reveal the secret right away. It's this comp from radio station WEBN: www.discogs.com...

I like Dino DiMuro wide range of styles in just one cassette.
Avatar 12:26pm Tony Coulter:

Yeah, he does have a wide range. He sometimes even gets into Beefheartian sounds (tho not on this tape).

Hello Tony and listeners
Avatar 12:37pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Fred! You're just in time for today's pick hit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Listener Bob in PGH:

I can see from the John Cieciel tape card that there's a song with a Hitler reference. Are all the cassettes today going to have Hitler references? :-)
Avatar 12:48pm Tony Coulter:

Some of the tapes I play on Tape Hiss are very unbalanced channel-wise, and every once in a while I feel the need to boost one of the channels, tho I'm never totally sure if I should or not. I did that with the Dino DiMuro tape we just heard: I boosted the right channel quite a bit. My question for you: How'd it sound? OK?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Listener Bob in PGH:

The vocal is right up the center on my sound system, so the boost must have worked
  12:50pm spodiodi:

it sounded ok to me, but i was on a laptop with puny speakers
Avatar 12:51pm Tony Coulter:

@ Listener Bob: For the previous tape, you mean, right?
Avatar 12:52pm Tony Coulter:

The tape on now doesn't seem to need boosting, so I'm leaving it alone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm fred:

My left ear is almost useless, so I can't help with stereo stuff
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Yvang:

My laptop is wired to a very good amplifier and this is sounding absolutley okay from the beginning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Listener Bob in PGH:

Yes, it's a small sample size I will admit, but a strange coincidence that the first two cassettes today have had a track with Hitler in the title.
Avatar 12:54pm Tony Coulter:

He's a popular guy. He will not return after this tape, tho....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Doug Schulkind:

Hi, Tony! Hello, International Coulterians!

so, only 6 -as it lists one twice and "god" doesn't belong on the list...
+ 2 here and probably 45,000 others
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Yvang:

Yes, bad list. I found another one www.lyrics.com...
Avatar 1:12pm Tony Coulter:

I like how that list shows Adolf Hitler as an "artist," side by side with Elvis Hitler.
  1:12pm Evan Cantor:

Hey, looks like my old tunes are gonna get some airplay! Thanks Tony--
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm coelacanth∅:

that looks a bit more comprehensive!
...i wonder if i ever wrote a song about hitler. i wrote a lot a long time ago and it seems like something i would've done, in some context...
Avatar 1:13pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Evan! Yes, your tape is coming up after this one. (Welcome!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm coelacanth∅:

there was a sort of art to his oratory delivery, so there you have it. an artist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm coelacanth∅:

(and he did go to art school, didn't he?)
Avatar 1:18pm Tony Coulter:

True!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Yvang:

And yes he was a painter.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Yvang:

Not my favourite painter.

hitler was no bob ross
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm coelacanth∅:

hmm, yeah.
-maybe when someone invents a working time machine we can go back and redirect little adolph's attentions so he can develop as an artist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Little Fyodor:

Hi Evan! Hi Tony! Enjoying the show immensely!! I tried to alert Dino too but the old email I had for him bounced and he doesn't appear to be on FB....

It's so nice! Where can I purchase this album?
Avatar 1:42pm Tony Coulter:

Hi, lionld! Unfortunately, as far as I know, this music was never released. What I'm playing is just a demo tape.
Avatar 1:42pm Tony Coulter:

It's the one on the lower left, in the picture above the playlist.
  1:44pm lionld:

thanks!, reminds me of The Litanies of Satan

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:46pm spodiodi:

haha Sem
Avatar 2:03pm Tony Coulter:

As I just said, this tape doesn't resemble Wall of Genius very much. I guess you could say it highlights Evan's secret folkie side.
  2:05pm Evan Cantor:

hi again Tony--ya know, back in '87, nobody thought Walls Of Genius guys were credible musicians...I had been a folkie before getting into other things and this was my "All Things Must Pass" after the initial dissolution of Walls Of Genius. Little did I know it would get airplay over 30 years later...
Avatar 🥁 2:07pm Sem:

I have 'FMU listener mauri in Finland to thank for drawing my attention to a local expression there: kalsarikännit (pronounced cal-sar-y-cuhn-eet). It describes " siiting around the house alone drinking beer in your underwear — with no intention of going out."
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:07pm WR:

Late again. Thought I had the day all figured out then, wrong! Sigh. Well enjoying while I can.
Avatar 2:08pm Tony Coulter:

@ Evan: It's a fine tape, Evan! I should play it for some friends who are heavily into folk/folk rock -- I'm sure they'd dig it.
  2:08pm erik:

i like much that folkie side, thanks Evan Cantor and Tony for presentation
Avatar 2:08pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, WR!

... and Erik too!
  2:09pm Evan Cantor:

I think we sat around a lot in our underwear drinking beer in the livingroom back in '87...
Avatar 2:20pm Erella:

Hi Tony,
Paul is a friend of mine! Check out his music biography books. His recent one is about the kids in the Hall and yes, Mike is his brother.
(They look a lot alike!)
He had a band called the Gravelberries that I liked a lot
Avatar 2:22pm Tony Coulter:

Erella! Nice to see you here!

The thing I'm not totally sure about is that this Paul Myers is same Paul Myers you're talking about -- but I think it is!

Avatar 2:24pm Erella:

Yes it is the same guy.
Avatar 2:24pm Erella:

He lives in SF now.

Avatar 2:25pm Tony Coulter:

It was just that the recordings I've heard by Mike M.'s brother sound nothing like this tape. They're much less experimental. But people change, I guess!
Avatar 2:25pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks for the info!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm coelacanth∅:

hitting the bunny trail now
Thanks tony take care everyone
Avatar 2:27pm Tony Coulter:

See ya, Coel!
Avatar 2:27pm Erella:

I knew him well when he put this out. We were all hanging around at an experimental music space at the time, the Music Gallery and though I cannot see the notes on this cassette, I will bet my roommate Chris Devonshire and Mike Phillip Wojeowda will be listed. (MPW produced many of the Barenaked Ladies albums)
He is very active on FB now posting his photos more than anything
Avatar 2:30pm Tony Coulter:

You are right! Mike Phillip Wojeowda is listed as producer
  2:30pm Evan Cantor:

I like this stuff, wonder why we never knew of it back in '82. well, there was no internet then...
Avatar 2:32pm Tony Coulter:

Plus, us U.S.-ers tend to ignore what's going on in Canada....
Avatar 2:33pm Erella:

There was a lot of fantastic improv groups. The CCMC was the best group. John Oswald (Have you heard of Plunderphonics) and Canadian Art Legend, Michael snow performed fantastic improv at the Music Gallery.
They do it monthly now. (Snow is in his 90's now!) and they are great.
  2:34pm Evan Cantor:

very true, but the cassette culture was international. I didn't get into it til about '84. In '82 I was still a bassist in a new wave band that was about to morph into the proto Walls o'Genius.
  2:35pm Evan Cantor:

oh yes--we knew of John Oswald!
Avatar 2:35pm Erella:

Paul Haines (father of Metric's Emily Haines) was very involved in this world. This is how I became friends with Robert Wyatt.
We all depended on Fact Sheet 5
Avatar 2:35pm Tony Coulter:

@ Erella: Yes, I'm a Plunderphonics fan! I met Oswald once (he's a friend of a friend). We all had lunch at a Chinese restaurant.
Avatar 2:36pm Erella:

John Oswald is my neighbour. He performs improv these days (Not THESE days) with Mary Margaret Ohara, and gang
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm doctorjazz:

Hi Tony and all, been listening and enjoying the show, too busy to post.
  2:38pm Evan Cantor:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:39pm WR:

Thank you Evan for you music
Avatar 2:40pm Erella:

My pleasure, WR.

I will continue listening but have to finish something that is being picked up shortly. This visit to ancient memories has been fun. Thank you for this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Little Fyodor:

Thank you for the info, too, Erella! Good to know John Oswald is keeping busy!! He appeared on a Walls Of Genius compilation tape once!
Avatar 2:46pm Erella:

John Oswald is doing magnificent giant photo installations involving masses of naked people as well as his photos. He is remarkable. I have all his original plunderphonics experiments on cassette and vinyl too.
He is a remarkable guy. Have you heard of the electric-eclectics.com festival? This music would be fun for you. Check out the line ups. John Oswald often goes. Do you know who Gordon Monahan is? He runs this festival. His work/music is amazing
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Cmurtha:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Little Fyodor:

Ooh, love Adam Bohman!!
Avatar 2:51pm Tony Coulter:

@ Erella: Yes, I do know who Gordon Monahan is! Love his stuff (and I've met him a few times -- tho it's been many years).

Don't know of that festival, tho -- will look into it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Little Fyodor:

Erella, thanks for all that! No doubt John is remarkable! No I hadn't heard of that festival (not that I remember anyway) nor mr. Monahan. I used to be a little more interested in the improv scene than recently. I think I recall hearing something about a Canadian festival, maybe from Jack Wright. I'll have to check it out!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:51pm ynod:

Thanks Tony and everybody for a most lovely and educational Hiss! See you next week.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:52pm WR:

Tony, have you digitized these tape recordings? Old cassettes can be fragile.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Yvang:

Digital is probably even more fragile
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Stanley:

See you Tony and thanks
Avatar 2:54pm Tony Coulter:

@ WR: I haven't digitized them all, by a long shot -- but I'm working on it. I'm slowly transferring them to CD-R, just to have a back-up. Sadly, some have already died. Most have held up surprisingly well, tho
