The chances of anyone ID'ing today's mystery LP-under-the-cassettes are very low, so I'll just reveal the secret right away. It's this comp from radio station WEBN: www.discogs.com...

Listener Bob in PGH:

I can see from the John Cieciel tape card that there's a song with a Hitler reference. Are all the cassettes today going to have Hitler references? :-)
Avatar 12:48pm
Tony Coulter:

Some of the tapes I play on Tape Hiss are very unbalanced channel-wise, and every once in a while I feel the need to boost one of the channels, tho I'm never totally sure if I should or not. I did that with the Dino DiMuro tape we just heard: I boosted the right channel quite a bit. My question for you: How'd it sound? OK?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm
Listener Bob in PGH:

The vocal is right up the center on my sound system, so the boost must have worked
  12:50pm
spodiodi:

it sounded ok to me, but i was on a laptop with puny speakers
Avatar 12:51pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Listener Bob: For the previous tape, you mean, right?
Avatar 12:52pm

The tape on now doesn't seem to need boosting, so I'm leaving it alone.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm
Listener Bob in PGH:

Yes, it's a small sample size I will admit, but a strange coincidence that the first two cassettes today have had a track with Hitler in the title.

As I just said, this tape doesn't resemble Wall of Genius very much. I guess you could say it highlights Evan's secret folkie side.
  2:05pm
Evan Cantor:

hi again Tony--ya know, back in '87, nobody thought Walls Of Genius guys were credible musicians...I had been a folkie before getting into other things and this was my "All Things Must Pass" after the initial dissolution of Walls Of Genius. Little did I know it would get airplay over 30 years later...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:07pm

I have 'FMU listener mauri in Finland to thank for drawing my attention to a local expression there: kalsarikännit (pronounced cal-sar-y-cuhn-eet). It describes " siiting around the house alone drinking beer in your underwear — with no intention of going out."

I knew him well when he put this out. We were all hanging around at an experimental music space at the time, the Music Gallery and though I cannot see the notes on this cassette, I will bet my roommate Chris Devonshire and Mike Phillip Wojeowda will be listed. (MPW produced many of the Barenaked Ladies albums)
He is very active on FB now posting his photos more than anything

There was a lot of fantastic improv groups. The CCMC was the best group. John Oswald (Have you heard of Plunderphonics) and Canadian Art Legend, Michael snow performed fantastic improv at the Music Gallery.
They do it monthly now. (Snow is in his 90's now!) and they are great.
  2:34pm
Evan Cantor:

very true, but the cassette culture was international. I didn't get into it til about '84. In '82 I was still a bassist in a new wave band that was about to morph into the proto Walls o'Genius.
  2:35pm
Evan Cantor:

oh yes--we knew of John Oswald!

Paul Haines (father of Metric's Emily Haines) was very involved in this world. This is how I became friends with Robert Wyatt.

John Oswald is doing magnificent giant photo installations involving masses of naked people as well as his photos. He is remarkable. I have all his original plunderphonics experiments on cassette and vinyl too.
He is a remarkable guy. Have you heard of the electric-eclectics.com festival? This music would be fun for you. Check out the line ups. John Oswald often goes. Do you know who Gordon Monahan is? He runs this festival. His work/music is amazing
