Buskers and talkers
Big bands and squawkers,
the Stork Club has retained its qualities of decaying elegance and dwindling significance since the late 1950s.

If we were playing my mama's favorite songs, it would be Supertramp and softrock radio hits—and Lily Tomlin!!!
Avatar 12:13pm Sem:

Greets, Your Storkness, and Clubbers around the globe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Irene Trudel:

I had been searching through my photos a lot lately, mostly because I have a lot of time on my hands to organize them. I found a folder of photos labeled "Roast Stork." They're from the time you left WFMU and we had a big party at a Chinese Restaurant in Jersey City whose name escapes me. I'll have to send 'em to you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Today is my mama's birthday (departed 1990) and i'm going to make her famous cheesecake while i listen. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm WR:

Did anyone check the date of that Tomlin bit with the breakup of ATT?
Avatar 12:16pm StringOFperils:

She used to do that bit on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, so it's probably around 1968
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm chresti:

Happy birthday, Granny's mama!
Avatar 12:17pm Listener Gregory:

My God, Laugh-In!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm WR:

GST! Got a multi stickered envelope yesterday. Will open after a week mail quarantine. Thank you!

On the nose, StringOPerils - 1967 or 8.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Franco Twinkie:

Granny, me and my mom would go to the post office, then walk across the street to The Donut Hole.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm WR:

Just looked st the playlist photo? You and your mother?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Franco Twinkie: That sounds like a fun outing!
Avatar 12:19pm StringOFperils:

Raising a birthday toast to your mom, GST, with a half empty cup of coffee.....or, is it....half full?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Franco Twinkie:

I miss all the stupid stuff we would do together.
Avatar 12:21pm Storkie Boy (my Mom's favorite child):

I'm toasting all moms with a lukewarm mug of usta-be-iced coffee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

I've never had a cheesecake like my mama's. It's a lot less intimidating than the kind i usually see, about half the height and it has a silky topping of rum-flavored sour cream baked on top
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm doctorjazz:

I think off I had to pick my mom's favorite tune, it would have been Knock Three Times, Tony Orlando and Dawn.
(Lovely Mozart).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm doctorjazz:

(She thought that made her so hip)
Avatar 12:22pm Listener Gregory:

My mother used to play opera at high volume on weekend mornings, waking up the teenage me. Hated opera for years!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm fred:

My mother was a huge Françoise Hardy fan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Irene Trudel:

My mom loved all those comedy records too. She especially loved P.D.Q Bach/Peter Schickele.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

My mama's mama sent me and all my cousins to summer camp! Thanks, Granny!
Avatar 12:24pm Storkie Boy (my Mom's favorite child):

My Dad adored PDQ Bach!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Franco Twinkie:

Despite herself, my mom would sing along with Cruising For Burgers by The Mothers Of Invention. She could not resist a good melody, even if it was by Frank Zappa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm deesat:

Hello Storkah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Franco Twinkie: When i got into new wave in the 80s, it was funny to hear my mom sing along. I was so embarrassed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

And yay Mills Bros!
Avatar 12:26pm Storkie Boy (my Mom's favorite child):

deesat!! O yeah!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm doctorjazz:

This Mills Brother track remindsme of Hokum, not what I usually associate with them. (Blind Blake, etc)
Avatar 12:27pm Storkie Boy (my Mom's favorite child):

Love hearing about Moms' faves!!
Avatar 12:28pm StringOFperils:

Frank's singing to a pack of Winstons.
Avatar 12:29pm Storkie Boy (my Mom's favorite child):

Good one, String!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm doctorjazz:

My mom (and dad) were Holocaust survivors from Poland, The Barry Sisters were their main favs. What I listened to was referred to as "Catz music" (meaning, scratching cats)
Avatar 12:30pm StringOFperils:

katzenjammer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm doctorjazz:

Great set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm chresti:

My mom liked singers Joan Baez and Billie Holiday...classical music...
Avatar 12:33pm Storkie Boy (my Mom's favorite child):

Chresti - definitely stay tuned!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm coelacanth∅:

i don't know what was more my father's and what was more my mother's but the whole family used to sit around the living room and sing along to peter paul & mary, Harry Belafonte and the kingston trio... then meet the beatles.
later on when we fought most of the time my mother was always telling me to turn the music down, but not if it was the beatles, ccr, or fleetwood mac (buckingham/nicks era)
Avatar 12:34pm StringOFperils:

My mom used to torture Chopin's music at her piano; she was self-taught.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm fred:

Hmmm, Gainsbourg had a very cringe-worthy take on that Chopin piece
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Irene Trudel:

My mom also LOVED Chopin. She often played them off old 78's in her collection. It's probably how I developed my love of classical music.
Avatar 12:35pm StringOFperils:

Nice edit....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm WR:

Still behind on reading, "silky topping of rum-flavored sour cream". Mmmmmmmmm.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm fred:

Sigh... the last dance show I saw had dancers singing this very Laurie Anderson track at the end
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm VT Knit Girl:

I am VERY disappointed that you are talking over Laurie!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

coelacanth∅: My mama loved Stevie Nicks and got REALLY into singing along with "Gypsy"
WR: it's unbelievably delicious
Avatar 12:38pm StringOFperils:

@drjazz..Oh yeah, the Richard Thompson that everyone was discussing a week ago....thanks for reminding me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

And bonus trivia: i thought Laurie Anderson looked like my mother!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Dave in Vermont:

VT Knit Girl is a mother!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm doctorjazz:

I finally got the day right...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

and VT Knit Girl has the funniest avatar image! Love it! Happy mama's day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Franco Twinkie:

My Mom loved to sing while she was doing housework, even if she felt lousy. When I was very small I would imagine she saw herself in the spotlight with a sparkly curtain in the backround.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm WR:

+1 was just look at VT Knit Girl avatar photo. Great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm chresti:

coel, we did too, the Weavers, Harry Belafonte, Peter, Paul, and Mary..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Wow, smashing the graham crackers into the melted butter is bringing back memories!
Avatar 12:43pm spodiodi:

my mom was always, and still is listening to the radio (/music) constantly. i guess that's where i get it from. she loves/loved the beatles most. just talked with her.
happy mom's day, moms!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm coelacanth∅:

my parents had a few years of trying to enjoy each-other's company in the early 70s and bought lots of 45s. they even danced (while the >100# weimaraner struggled to figure out who was attacking who...which one to attack)
- that was mostly my mother... 4/4 time, 2-3 minute pop songs (like knock 3 times -dr.j)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

My mom LOVED "All In The Family"
Avatar 12:46pm spodiodi:

lol coelacanth
Avatar 12:46pm StringOFperils:

I can't believe how much time I have spent on WFMU's streams over the last five or six weeks. I'm going to need to detox....ah, the great Roger Kellaway should get credit for that in addition to Jean Stapleton and Carol O'connor
Avatar 12:46pm spodiodi:

hilarious image, thank you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

AND she loved Bob Newhart! YAY!
Avatar 12:48pm Storkie Boy (my Mom's favorite child):

@StringOPerilsDamn hard music to play! She was ambitious!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm chresti:

My mom hated top 40 music, she'd say "why do they have to yell like that?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

chresti: what did she like?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm chresti:

Granny, she liked folk music, Billie Holiday, classical music...
Avatar 12:57pm Storkie Boy (my Mom's favorite child):

Never would have known about Dick Haymes without you, Mom!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Uncle Michael:

Dick Haymes recorded the definitive version of Me & Bobby McGee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Franco Twinkie:

My mom is really good at getting stuff wrong, for example: The Corona Virus is alternately The Carnivorous Virus and The Cornilious Virus. When I got Blue by Joni Mitchell, I would play it over and over, which led her to comment "So, you like that Toni Mitchell?" After all this time, I've never been able to tell when she's doing it on purpose.
Avatar 1:03pm Storkie Boy (my Mom's favorite child):

Wowzer - gotta check that one, UM!
Avatar 1:03pm spodiodi:

lol, Franco. too funny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm chresti:

We listened to that Alan Sherman record a lot, a family favorite.
Avatar 1:03pm Storkie Boy (my Mom's favorite child):

That's great, Franco! Have you ever asked her, point blank?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm fred:

@Stork: Wouldn't that be breaking a kind of trickster code?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Franco Twinkie:

Stork, a couple of weeks ago I asked her if she wanted some corn chips, she says, what? Corn chips. What? CORN CHIPS!!! Pork chops? Qye!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Franco Twinkie: ha ha!

The Mother's Curse!
  1:13pm wendy del formaggio:

I like Sol Hoopii! And I like this show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm coelacanth∅:

chresti i think my father was where the folk, classical and swing came from (and opera, exotica, spoken word, comedy... pop and country later on)
my mom definitely got into it but it was him bringing it into the house.
...i think the idea of getting the 45s was his idea too -in an effort to save the marriage, but mostly her choices.
i think she preferred silence best of all.
Avatar 1:14pm Storkie Boy (my Mom's favorite child):

Hi Wendy. Happy Ma's Day to yours!
Avatar 1:14pm Storkie Boy (my Mom's favorite child):

@Franco - now I think she's messing with you.

"does this taste funny?"
  1:18pm wendy del formaggio:

Thanks, Stork! I’m calling her soon so I’ll pass along your good wishes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm chresti:

coel, he can't see her at all since the place locked down. He delivers letters and snacks to the place she's staying, talks to her on the phone.

Funny how I don't recall synth being so much a part of this song, probably because I only ever heard it on AM radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 1:37pm StringOFperils:

...or did I? Probably more likely '70s FM. My memory is no longer reliable.
Avatar 1:38pm Storkie Boy (my Mom's favorite child):

OMG, UM, this is the BIG one for her, and me, too. His strained voice makes this even more heart-rending.

What an album. As far as I know, never released on CD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Uncle Michael:

My dad is still around, living with my brother. When I was staying with him, I played "In the Shade of the old Apple Tree" Louis Armstrong w/ the Mills Bros. He really perked up and sang along
Avatar 2:07pm StringOFperils:

About a month or two ago I read that a team of movers had just dropped Angela Hewitt's prized piano, and completely destroyed it. She did all of her recording on that thing, so she wasn't too pleased. Hope she found an adequate replacement.
Avatar 2:08pm Storkie Boy (my Mom's favorite child):

Me too, StringOFperils. Terrible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Doug Schulkind:

@chresti
In my father's last days and hours, I would sit with him and play for hours and hours Louis Armstrong & His Hot Five on my phone. Mostly the song "Tight Like This," which was his favorite.
Avatar 2:10pm StringOFperils:

Also one of mine. Your Dad had great taste. The Hot Fives and Sevens are unbeatable.
Avatar 2:11pm Storkie Boy (my Mom's favorite child):

My brother played some Glenn Gould (Bach, of course) when he was in hospice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm Phillippe Bastille:

My dad was the music lover in the family (gone 10 years now). My mom is still around (90 and still living independently), will listen to a polka here and there, but that's about it
Avatar 2:14pm spodiodi:

nice tribute, Stork
Avatar 2:24pm Storkie Boy (my Mom's favorite child):

Avatar 2:29pm Storkie Boy (my Mom's favorite child):

Program Advisory: I got a bunch more tunes to go - it's OT again at The Stork. Call yer mom and tell her you'll be a little late.
Avatar 2:30pm StringOFperils:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Storkie Boy (my Mom's favorite child): that's the door's fault for not accounting for cheesecake!
Avatar 2:47pm Listener Gregory:

Had the TV on after the late news last night, and uncharacteristically went channel-hopping to see if there was anything not totally objectionable. Amazingly, I came across a Herbie Hancock concert on Austin City Limits. That exceeded expectations for TV.
Avatar 2:52pm Storkie Boy (my Mom's favorite child):

Wow, bingo, already, Listener Gregory. I just watched him on Elvis Costello's live thing. Herbie doesn't even need a host. Christian McBride (sniff) on bass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Doug Schulkind:

Good lord what a glorious record.
Avatar 2:56pm Storkie Boy (my Mom's favorite child):

Byrd made two such records - just sublime-o-rooney.
Avatar 2:57pm StringOFperils:

This Donald Byrd session is...wow...what a creation.

Please stand by for overtime here at Da Stork.

The French hornist Robert Northern here would later perform with Sun Ra and elsewhere as Brother Ah. He has had a jazz show on the Pacifica radio station in Washington, DC, WPFW, for decades.
Avatar 3:00pm StringOFperils:

This is like Richard Strauss good.
Avatar 3:01pm Storkie Boy (my Mom's favorite child):

Thank you, Dougie. that dosn't get explained enough. What a marvel is Robert Northern.

I never was one for collecting autographs, but I do have Max Roach's and it's on the back of Brother Ah's LP Sound Awareness (feat. Mr. Roach).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm doctorjazz:

I'm always struck by how Donald Byrd went from wunderkind to has been in such a short time.
Avatar 3:07pm Listener Gregory:

I'm not really listening to the show—I just have it on. Or am I??? What is this Nate Morgan???
Avatar 3:07pm Listener Gregory:

@Doug, very nice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm doctorjazz:

Thanks for a lovely, bittersweet show, Wolfgang. Good week all!
