Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Here we go! Get your lollipops ready! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Rich in Washington:

Hey there, GeorgyGirl!
Avatar 5:00pm StringOFperils:

Bazooka Joe at the ready !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hi there Rich! :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Rich in Washington:

Everybody's gone at my house. I'm gonna crank this up in every room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

StringOFperils! Hello! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Oh boy candy!

wait is this a trap??
Avatar 5:01pm StringOFperils:

I have this Archies LP. Not proud of it, but there you go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Sweet Corn Lizzie! Welcome! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - be proud! ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Rich - crank it UP! :-)
Avatar 5:02pm Photocopy Cha Cha:

Good Purkka Time dear GG & folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hello Photocopy Cha Cha! Hurrah! :-)
Avatar 5:03pm StringOFperils:

Veronica Lodge or Betty Cooper ? Thoughts ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Veronica all the way. Veronica was coooool :-)
Avatar 5:05pm Photocopy Cha Cha:

Purkka might be the closest for bubblegum pop in my mother tongue (OK, it could be used with a lot of 70s stuff like Rubettes, Mud, Sweet etc.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Photocopy - there's *definitely* a link between bubblegum and glam :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

This music makes me ridiculously happy :-)
Avatar 5:08pm StringOFperils:

Thanks for playing this, because I don't think I've listened to it, in any respectable fidelity at least, for many decades
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - I hope you're having a bit of a dance too :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Linda Lee:

heyheyhey!! here with my bells on! the striped ones!
Ronnie Lodge was the grooviest.
Avatar 5:09pm Photocopy Cha Cha:

OK, this one is burned into my mind permanently in association with Monty Python. And The Simpsons of course (with Homer singing along while the Walkman's batteries die)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Linda Lee! Hello! :-)
  5:09pm CC:

Yummy!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Linda Lee:

my sweet Strawberry Alarm Clock! hi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Photocopy - of course! I'd forgotten about Monty Python! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hi CC! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - at your service :-) With added candy! lol
Avatar 5:11pm StringOFperils:

Poking at the embers of my Susan Dey crush
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Linda Lee:

that's so grrrrrooovy! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I remember when Susan Dey was in LA Law - that was a double take :-)
  5:12pm CC:

I never was much into bubblegum but I couldn't resist commenting on my favorite!!!...hehehe...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I will confess now that I was firmly in the Osmonds camp. I mean, I watched The Partridge Family, but my loyalty was elsewhere ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@CC - I shall convert you! Bwah ha ha ....
Avatar 5:14pm StringOFperils:

I think Donny Osmond and The Captain & Tenille made me embrace proto-metal for a while back in the early 70s
  5:15pm CC:

Cheerz y'all... I will be quietly listening in the background for reference purposes..:)
Avatar 5:15pm Photocopy Cha Cha:

@5:09 DJ GeorgyGirl: well from The Simpsons & Monty Python you can see I was a 90s teenager - yes, Monty Python's Flying Circus was not shown here until early 90s in Finland (except for the first season from 1969 which was considered too weird here at the time, early 70s?).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - lol!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@CC - help yourself to beverages and candy ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Photocopy - I think some of it is still too weird. lol
Avatar 5:17pm StringOFperils:

oooh...stream hiccups
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Rich in Washington:

the stream got dizzy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Again?? Ugh. Tell me if there are any more :-(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

As long as we don't get what happened last week, I'll be happy
Avatar 5:19pm StringOFperils:

I listened to the archive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

There were 43,000 homes without Internet in the UK last Monday. It was pretty big! I'm just happy it wasn't my fault ;-)
Avatar 5:21pm Photocopy Cha Cha:

And I was not there, but apparently there was a Finnish radio program called Purkkaa ja Jytää - "jytä" could stand for hard rock of sorts, like Uriah Heep, Deep Purple etc. Sweet & Mud could be in both camps, maybe even the Osmonds with Crazy Horses! Jytä seems like a funny word for the native speaker, but apparently back then completely cool. And unfortunately a lot of non-prog popular rock music was apparently labelled Purkka, like CCR of all things! Now, the connection between CCR and bubblegum music...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

The lyrics to this song are highly questionable. lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Photocopy - I almost included The Osmonds. ;-)
Avatar 5:22pm Photocopy Cha Cha:

stream off again for a sec
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Crazy Horses is a hell of a track to be fair :-)
Avatar 5:22pm StringOFperils:

oh man, streamage....just when the double entendres were getting good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Does it go out for a long period or just momentarily?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Rich in Washington:

I was in a panic a couple of weeks ago because I couldn't find my Brady Bunch CD. Crisis averted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Linda Lee:

hiccups, GG.
Avatar 5:23pm StringOFperils:

a few seconds....seems to waffle as to where it wants to be
Avatar 5:23pm Photocopy Cha Cha:

spookily enough the first interruption was by BATMAN. the interruptions are like 5 sec each
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Fingers crossed it settles down :-(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Every other device in the house is on flight mode
Avatar 5:24pm StringOFperils:

Oh well, it's all good as they say. The maximum effort shine through !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Rich in Washington:

It's really sporadic. I wouldn't worry about it terribly much. It doesn't detract from the wonderful mix.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Linda Lee:

i'm sure it's not you, GG. remember when this happened all the time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

As long as you're all having a good time, that's the important thing :-)
Avatar 5:26pm StringOFperils:

Everybody rock those air tambourines !!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Ironically, I've just had to give up sugar. Lol! I couldn't have timed that better really ;-)
Avatar 5:27pm StringOFperils:

I dunno, Betty Cooper was kind of hot too, in her slow-burn kind of way.
Avatar 5:27pm zivilars:

Good evening everybody – fantastic theme this week, thanks for the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

When I was putting this playlist together my daughter said "Of course now The Archies bubblegum persona has been completely destroyed with 'Riverdale'" :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hi zivilars! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Linda Lee:

i've never seen 'riverdale', but i'd imagine it has no magic.
Avatar 5:29pm zivilars:

@DJ GG: Missed the show last week, have to listen to it the archive, these two seem to be quite connected!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - its' super dark, like the rebooted Sabrina
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@zivilars - definitely a big sibling/little sibling pairing! :-)
Avatar 5:30pm StringOFperils:

I remember seeing th Lemon Pipers on TV on a Saturday afternoon music/variety show of some kind here in Canada back in the Jurassic or whenever that was. I remember them looking like Roy Wood's Wizard kinda sorta
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm Linda Lee:

never saw that one either!
the Archies were magical ~ like the people in a dream. they weren't supposed to be 'realistic'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - I shall have to look for that :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - I think I'd freak if I met someone who looked like Jughead in real life! lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Rich in Washington:

I remember the hoopla in the 80s when Jughead went punk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Rich - that must have been a hell of a mohawk!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Linda Lee:

so 'riverdale' is live action? not a cartoon?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - yep :-) Both that and Sabrina are live actors and very dramatic. Bits of kind of dark humour but definitely dramas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Linda Lee:

that doesn't seem fun at all.
Avatar 5:35pm StringOFperils:

Buddy Holly?!! Hmmm. That's a nomenclature stretch, really. The Crickets certainly appealed to teens, but they're well in the category of Texas rock n roll. Rave On is almost Bo Diddley. Music press (arts press) will say anything. The internet is worse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - by contrast, I *loved* the 90s Sabrina :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - I genuinely had never heard that. I still don;t know what the connection is
  5:36pm CC:

I never knew that this song was classified as bubble gum???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Linda Lee:

dear me, i missed all of it! i do remember the Sabrina spinoff on Saturday morning, though, just before i left Bubble Gum Land forever ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@CC - yep! Possibly a Kasenetz/Katz? I'd have to check :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Linda Lee:

that was 68 or 69, i think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - I have a vague memory of that, now you come to mention it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Linda Lee:

i had a few years on you, don't forget. but here's a question. you remember Tiger Beat? 16 Magazine? Bobby Sherman, the Monkees, Jack Wilde, Herman's Hermits? were those acts for a slightly older demographic than, say, the Banana Splits?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Rich in Washington:

I can still hear the Sabrina The Teenage Witch theme song in my head
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Otis Fodder:

Literally eating banana, brownie, crumble, caramel ice cream at the moment and had 2 slight brainfreezes. Hi all!
Avatar 5:38pm zivilars:

Was the 90s Sabrina the one with the fake as hell cat puppet? :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - not sure. I'd say that Tiger Beat was probably catching the pre-teens as they turned into fully fledged teens.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@zivilars - that's the one!
Avatar 5:39pm StringOFperils:

I am SURE that there are other, more credible, bubblegum forerunners than Buddy Holly. Bubblegum, I think, has fey elements that are part of its intrinsic character, and point therefore directly at GLAM. For that reason, I would cite Joe Meek, for instance, as being far more seminal (pardon the pun lads) in the history of bubblegum. Buddy Holly, can't see it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Linda Lee:

Otis! hi love!! here, have a hula hoop!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hi Otis!!! Have some for me! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - definitely!!! More of a case for Joe Meek, like you say
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Linda Lee:

they sure had their demographics worked out tight didn't they?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I make no apologies for playing this song so much ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - oh absolutely! All tied in with merchandise and ads and goodness knows what else.
Avatar 5:41pm StringOFperils:

This is great. Don't know this. It's totally plastic, exploitative, cheap, and idiotic. What more could you want ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Otis Fodder:

Ice cream for all. Gin n Tonic too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - I am completely in love with this track. I even have the t-shirt bookmarked for future purchase ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Linda Lee:

the Beatles were there for that, definitely. yes, real talent, but the marketing was phenomenal! the image.. then the merch. this is how a 4 year old child could become a full fledged Beatlemaniac!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Otis - we've bought Gin and Tonic ice-cream for my sister-in-law in the past :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Rich in Washington:

Otis!
Avatar 5:43pm StringOFperils:

Ha ha. Wow. I admire your depth of commitment GG
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - I may need help ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Otis Fodder:

I am very happy I missed Candy Sugar Shoppe. I'm an odd duck, I like the Bunch's American Pie more than the original but for some reason that Candy song makes me want to tear sheets of paper (would totally do this) and kick small flowers (I would never ever do that).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - best way to grab kids' money is through sugar ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Rich in Washington:

I think the 90s Sabrina (which I've never seen) had production people and writers from Mystery Science Theatre. I think Joel or his brother had something to do with special effects, including the cat puppet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Otis - it's super catchy but *highly* inappropriate!
Avatar 5:44pm StringOFperils:

that cat puppet was cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Linda Lee:

isn't it amazing how all this was musical! *everyone* had a band. was it just because they could market music along with everything else?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Rich - really???? I did not know that!!! That's awesome :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - pretty much. There was even a band for the Sugar Bears cereal! lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Linda Lee:

isn't it strange. the Banana Splits, the Buggles, the Groovy Ghoulies, the Archies, Josie & the Pussycats..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Linda Lee:

not the Buggles, the Buggaloos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - Hello, small child, Give us your money. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Otis Fodder:

I love the Bugaloos. Senses of our World.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - I did have to read that twice. "The Buggles??" lol
Avatar 5:47pm zivilars:

If I remember correctly Melissa Joah Hart tried to do a Kickstarter campaign for a Sabrina the Teenage Witch reboot a few years ago, but it seemed to have failed miserably ... :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Linda Lee:

the Buggles were an actual band, but a different one. didn't they do 'video killed the radio star'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@zivilars - she was *very* critical of the latest reboot as well.
  5:48pm Elizabeth:

Hi Georgy and everyone! I love bubblegum!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Linda Lee:

the Monkees were *definitely* bubble gum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - they did indeed :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hello Elizabeth! :-)
Avatar 5:48pm zivilars:

@DJ GG: I guess so, but to be fair, the lastest reboot is something TOTALLY different in tone, of course
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Peter Tork was my first love <3
Avatar 5:49pm zivilars:

those both can't be compared at all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@zivilars - oh absolutely! No cutesy witches there!
Avatar 5:49pm StringOFperils:

@Linda Lee...The Buggles did have the hit with Video Killed The Radio Star BUT it came out about one year earlier, in an earlier form, by not quite the same band but almost :Bruce Wooley and the Camera Club. I like it as much, if not more, than the Buggles' version
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Otis Fodder:

GG - I was torn between 'baked ham and cheese loaf' and 'egg salad and bologna rolls' for my recipe card of the week... I'm going to go with 'frosted button cookies' which have sayings like 'do you dig it' and 'groovy' for the show tomorrow. Inspired by all this gum on my shoe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

It took me decades to figure out that The Buggles were singing "we can't rewind".
I genuinely thought "country wind"? What the hell does that mean? lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Otis - YES!!! That's perfect :-) <3
  5:51pm CC:

Hehehe... I guess I liked a lot of these I just never liked the label bubble gum???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Linda Lee:

had no idea about the 'Radio Star'. just remember 10 or 15 songs at the start of MTV & that was one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@CC - Energetic Pop. :-)
Avatar 5:52pm StringOFperils:

You can't hide in here CC. You have bubblegum on your breath. Fess up now, c'mon...
  5:52pm Elizabeth:

Has anyone ever read "Bubblegum is the Naked Truth" ? Great bubblegum resource!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Elizabeth - bits of it. It's very good :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

The Turtles aren't *strictly* Bubblegum ... but I really like them and it's my show. lol ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Linda Lee:

here's another one: were Alvin & the Chipmunks bubble gum or something else?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Otis Fodder:

For any fans of the book "Bubblegum is the naked truth" by Kim Cooper and pals, I go back to it often. If not, hip it'd be real peachy keen, dig, if you checked it out cause golly, it's a gas.
Avatar 5:53pm StringOFperils:

Even The Hollies could be recast as bubblegum, if you want to stretch definitions and get all anachronistic about it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - definitely!!!! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Linda Lee:

@StringOFperils ~ so could the Mamas & the Papas..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Otis - the next track is for you :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Linda Lee:

GG ~ seem to remember they were pre-Beatles. am i right on that?
Avatar 5:55pm StringOFperils:

And this could easily be a 'northern' soul classic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - 50s I think?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - not bad for furry animals! ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Linda Lee:

right! though i remember the show & i was born in 60
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Here you go, Otis! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Linda Lee:

oh god! more sugar commercials!
then they couldn't understand why we got high later..
  5:57pm CC:

Tommy Roe wound up going country in the 80s...
Avatar 5:57pm StringOFperils:

This Cowsills record was life changing for me....this is TOTAL POP GENIUS
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

The Cowsills are more Sunshine Pop ... but they do crop up on Bubblegum compilations :-)
Avatar 5:57pm zivilars:

fantastic song, agree!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

This is SO pretty <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Linda Lee:

such a pretty, pretty song.
has anyone seen the Catskills performing lately? they were incredibly normal. bad teeth, bad hair. it's wonderful.
Avatar 5:58pm Photocopy Cha Cha:

Even as 12-year old I was soooooo serious that I was wondering "am I allowed to like this song" when there was some oldies section on the radio. But this is gorgeous, the cowsills I mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Linda Lee:

hahah! not the Catskills. the Cowsills! god
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

THAT HARP!!! <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - I bet there's a parody group somewhere ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Otis Fodder:

A lot of really syrup bubblebum makes me want to sleep, but not the Cowsills or the Splits. This Cowsills song is a long time fav. Sunshine Pop is my bag.
Avatar 5:59pm Photocopy Cha Cha:

heavenly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Linda Lee:

maybe there are now. :-)
that's a gorgeous record, though.
Avatar 6:00pm StringOFperils:

Bubblegum is a fairly narrow row to hoe really, you can narrow it down a lot, by easilyy excluding these parallel forays into the hearts and wallets of kids with some pocket change
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Brace yourselves for the anecdote ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm Linda Lee:

oh my god!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm Rich in Washington:

OUCH!
  6:03pm CC:

yes energetic sunshine pop is a label that is easier to swallow...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Rich in Washington:

What's a Shondell?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

The trail of blood was pretty impressive!
having the stitches taken out was HORRIBLE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Rich - that's a very good question. What IS a Shondell??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Rich in Washington:

This is one of the first 45s I remember buying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Linda Lee:

i seem to recall we were allowed to get hurt then..but that was pretty bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Otis Fodder:

I love this cover of Tiffany's song. Haaaaa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I can hear Lene Lovich in my head ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Linda Lee:

did they do Cruystal Blue Persuasion too?
Avatar 6:05pm StringOFperils:

Tommy James did an interview on somebody's show on the main stream about a month ago....Tood-O-Phonic Todd maybe>
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Rich in Washington:

Yeah, Lene Lovich. My teenage crush.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - they did! I LOVE that song! :-)
Avatar 6:06pm StringOFperils:

All this Kastenetz Katz stuff is nuts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Linda Lee:

one of my first singles for sure!
i thought of Lene Lovich too, just now.that was a nice cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Rich in Washington:

My teenage crush progression for me was Lene Lovich > Nina Hagen > Lydia Lunch
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

One of my nicknames at university was Lene Lovich. It was the makeup and the plaits that did it :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Rich in Washington:

HA!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Rich - yeah, I can see that! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Linda Lee:

oooh. teenage crush progressions..
i'm not sure i could come up with mine..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Linda Lee:

i crushed out on June Millington for sure. just from a few album photos!
Avatar 6:08pm Photocopy Cha Cha:

at least in the finnish version of baseball (Pesäpallo) the pitcher is in danger the most as s/he throws the ball upwards, opposite the hitter, very near and has to step back to avoid the bat. Peanuts was the reason I was into it, perhaps I was born a loser like Charlie Brown.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Photocopy - I think I just had a target on my head that day ;-)
  6:09pm Elizabeth:

Crazy Elephant! I always loved the laughing part in this song!
Avatar 6:09pm Photocopy Cha Cha:

I laughed aloud when you were assigned the role of the dog, GG. Sorry! Must have been hard as a kid. Now the other blow you had - too scary to talk about
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Elizabeth - pretty wild isn't it?:-)
Huh HA HA huh! ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Rich in Washington:

I think Lou Reed ripped off that crazy guitar style.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Photocopy - I was so annoyed about that. lol! Proper small child tantrum ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Rich in Washington:

Oh man! I remember this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Rich in Washington:

What were those kids hiding out from? Were they part of the radical underground?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Linda Lee:

i think Lou worked his out first, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

THIS is a typing challenge, I'll tell you that ;-)
  6:11pm Elizabeth:

@ Georgy- my husband and I reference that laugh all the time! No one knows what we are talking about! LOL-
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Elizabeth - love it! :-) Did he have a good birthday? :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Linda Lee:

suddenly just remembered the Sylvas & the De Franco Family.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Rich - I'm surprised ANY of us made it through childhood with all that sugar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

How in the hell could they get away with advertising sugary cereal as "balanced"??
  6:12pm Elizabeth:

Yes, he did! Thank you for asking! We were able to get cake from the local bakery- so all was good! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Linda Lee:

ha! they paid for it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

:Linda Lee - oh ... what was the big De Franco hit?
Avatar 6:13pm StringOFperils:

@Rich...Lou Reed, early on, worked at Pickwick Records, which was a kind of evolving cheap cash-in sort of label. I think he was inside a general movement toward cheap rock records for kids. His early stuff probably sounds similar for that reason.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Elizabeth - yay! I'm happy :-)
  6:13pm Elizabeth:

Slaughter and the Dogs did a cover of "Quick Joey Small"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Linda Lee:

was it 'Heart Beat ~ It's A Love Beat'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Rich in Washington:

yeah, his The Ostrich is a real hoot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Aha! So Lou Reed had an in? That makes sense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

:Linda Lee - that's it! Thank you :-)
Avatar 6:14pm StringOFperils:

yup, The Ostrich, perfect example
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Rich in Washington:

In their earliest incarnation, the Cramps covered Quick Joey Small. There's a demo of it anyway and they clearly hadn't found their groove yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Linda Lee:

yes, he did. he wanted to write songs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Rich - that just blew my mind :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Linda Lee:

the Sylvas might have been unique, actually. bubble gum funk!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Rich in Washington:

yeah, Lou sort of invented the radical alternate tuning thing several decades before Sonic Youth and all those other NY guitar bands.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Don't put an entire pack of gum in your mouth and blow a bubble, kids.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Rich in Washington:

SOunded like he said 'stomach pump's calling my name'.
Avatar 6:17pm StringOFperils:

Lou was into a lot of things in a devil-may-care way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Linda Lee:

poor GG. hit in the face again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Rich - I mean ... if the back stories to the actors are any indication .. lol
Avatar 6:17pm StringOFperils:

Stomach pump. Ha ha ha.
  6:18pm Elizabeth:

Bobby's "sultry" part in this song- always cracked me up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Rich in Washington:

HA!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - I'm starting to realise that the church in question may have had it in for me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Linda Lee:

oh no!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

It's that Otis again! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Linda Lee:

hey! here comes more subliminal drug stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Isn't it groovy in a daydream? Yes. Yes, it is :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Linda Lee:

a whole lotta sugar is what we'll be bringin..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - what are Pizza Spins?
  6:24pm CC:

Luv this one!!!
Avatar 6:24pm StringOFperils:

An American snack 'cracker' thing....circular, covered with food-science red dust that tasted sort of like barbecue sauce...sort of puffy like deep-fried shrimp crackers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@CC - definitely one of my favourites :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Linda Lee:

the word 'generation' was big then. generation gap. pepsi generation ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - oo! That sounds quite nice actually :-)
  6:25pm Elizabeth:

I never heard of pizza spins!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Linda Lee:

gosh, i don't remember Pizza Spins at all! i do remember Bugles, though.
Avatar 6:25pm StringOFperils:

They were so bad they were good yeah

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Linda Lee:

oh god yes! now i remember.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I like that they included pizza as a reference ;-)
Avatar 6:27pm StringOFperils:

Yeah, it was wise of them to connect them to food in some way at least
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Question. Trivial Pursuit - pizza or cheese?
Avatar 6:27pm StringOFperils:

Back when that mattered
Avatar 6:28pm StringOFperils:

Pizza, OR cheese? We can only have one of them?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

This isn;t The Cuff Links by the way ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Linda Lee:

let's have cheese!
Avatar 6:29pm StringOFperils:

Can't live w/o cheese.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Sorry. The plastic thing that you put the segments in :-)
Do you call it the pizza or the cheese?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I typed half a thought. LOL
Avatar 6:30pm StringOFperils:

Can't have pizza w/o cheese. Wait, it this one of those a priori trick questions?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Linda Lee:

what segments? now i'm lost. :-D
Avatar 6:31pm StringOFperils:

Me too. I think were about to learn something weird about Britain itself!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

This thing :-)
The wheel thing :-)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Linda Lee:

good heavens! no clue! :-D
Avatar 6:34pm StringOFperils:

Oh, the board game TRIVIAL PURSUIT. This is what comes of common phrases being branded. No idea what the little tray is called.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Otis Fodder:

Thanks for the sugar GG. Time for another client call and fixing things that are broken. Take care all !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hugs, Otis! :-)
Avatar 6:35pm StringOFperils:

by Otis
Avatar 6:35pm StringOFperils:

or bye, even
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I've been at parties where scuffles have broken out over the "pizza vs cheese" debate. lol
  6:36pm CC:

I guess there are a lot of bubble gum sounding songs by groups who are not necessarily categorized as bubble gum???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@CC - pretty much :-) I've seen The Sweet included on Bubblegum compilations, for example :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Linda Lee:

@CC ~ definitely. i think it's just about melody & production.
2 questions now: who did 'Hang On Sloopy'?
and: did Tommy James do both "Crystal Blue Persuasion" *and* "Crimson & Clover"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - yep to Crimson & Clover :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hang On Sloopy was The McCoys :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Which ... is a crisp company in the UK. Circular stories! ;-)
  6:39pm CC:

yeah The McCoys they were a Texas group headed up by Rick Derringer!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Linda Lee:

thank you dear! couldn't remember for my life.
*best* rice crispies promo song ever: the Rolling Stones!
what's the crisp company?
Avatar 6:40pm StringOFperils:

In America, it was originally a family of hillbillies, famous for their ongoing feud with the Hatfield family
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - McCoys Crisps. Big ones with ridges. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Linda Lee:

ah! like Ruffles! :-)
  6:41pm Elizabeth:

American Sweet fans have cross-over with hard rock/ metal fans! Their bubblegum hits were never popular here! Which is a shame, because I love their bubblegum hits and their later hard-rocking songs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

The hatfields & The McCoys! yes, I remember that from Westerns on Saturday afternoons on TV :-)
Avatar 6:41pm StringOFperils:

MMM. I need chips, and candy. Lots of candy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Exactly like Ruffles :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I really want some bacon-flavoured crisps now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm Linda Lee:

"Ruffles Have Ridges"!
Avatar 6:42pm StringOFperils:

Slade were kind of bubblegum, while they were being glam, or rock or whatever management wanted them to be I guess
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I think I might have to do a Glam show now ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Linda Lee:

yes! i think so too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Rich in Washington:

Harvey Comics
Avatar 6:43pm StringOFperils:

sez it was ARchie Comics Publications
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

That was driving me crazy. Open mic, closed brain moment there!
  6:44pm Elizabeth:

Josie and the Pussycats were one of my favorite all time cartoons! A glam show would be awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Linda Lee:

yes. from wiki: "Archie Comic Publications, Inc., is an American comic book publisher headquartered in Pelham, New York. The company's many titles feature the fictional teenagers Archie Andrews, Jughead Jones, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Reggie Mantle, Sabrina Spellman, and Josie and the Pussycats."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Elizabeth - I loved Josie :-)
  6:44pm CC:

Would we call Western Union by the Five Americans a bubble gum song???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@CC - I don't think I know that one! I shall have to investigate further :-)
Avatar 6:46pm StringOFperils:

Sunshine Pop probably....like Harpers Bizarre of the same era
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Rich in Washington:

when I was a kid, I lived in a town where there were a lot of kids who were sort of like Amish, but Finnish, called Apostolic Lutherans. And they couldn't watch TV or listen to the radio, nor could they read superhero or supernatural related comics. But they could read all types of Harvey comics, which were foreign to me. So, they loved calling me Richie Rich, which I hated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Rich in Washington:

Wait!
Archie Comics weren't affiliated with Harvey Comics? Worldview rocked.
Avatar 6:46pm StringOFperils:

The category thing is apocryphal anyway. The taxonomy breaks down the more you pursue it
  6:46pm Elizabeth:

Banana Splits! Another great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Rich - oh no!! There was a popular commercial when I was a child which had a jingle that sort of sounded like my real name. And I got that sung at me *all the damn time*. Drove me nuts
Avatar 6:48pm StringOFperils:

Lance Link!!!! I loved him
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Linda Lee:

oh my god. Lancelot Link had a band too??
  6:48pm CC:

I agree SOP...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

This track is pretty damn close to glam :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Aitch:

Mata Hairy
  6:49pm Elizabeth:

I have the entire Lancelot Link series on DVD! LOL!
Avatar 6:49pm Photocopy Cha Cha:

@6:46 Rich in Washington: interesting. The evangelic lutherans are the main religion here and so closely connected to the state that even if you leave it and therefore are exempt from paying church tax, your tax money goes there to some extent anyways. Asof now, won't complain, the local church does my food and med home deliveries...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

LANCE! LANCE!!! :-D
Avatar 6:49pm StringOFperils:

Great show Georgygirl...I will remember this with a grain of salt!!!...:)
Avatar 6:54pm StringOFperils:

Yeah, ate a lot of Cap'n Crunch, dry, no milk, right out of the box....it used to have great little comic books in the box too, at first
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Linda Lee:

what a fun show!! thanks love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Of course, being Britain "womble" is now an insult. lol

@6:54 Aitch: for me many british things are like that, like crisp sandwiches, but they are so delicious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

A womble is now someone who is a bit of an idiot. And if you're an evil idiot you;re a "cockwomble". ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Linda Lee:

let's not forget the flexi discs on the cereal boxes!
Avatar 6:56pm StringOFperils:

Yep! Muppet - that's another one :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Linda Lee:

the sun just *burst* into this room from the window. right on time! :-)
  6:57pm CC:

one thing about bubble gum ...I never chew it while I'm trying to walk...hehehe...
Avatar 6:57pm StringOFperils:

I remember a Bobby Sherman cardboard flexi-disc that had to be cut out of a cereal box. Can't imagine what that did to a record player. Anarchy in marketing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Aitch:

We got everyone's crap down here, English, US, Japanese as well as our home-grown, very crap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I hope you're all singing :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Linda Lee:

hahaha! always a surprise when they played. :-)
Avatar 6:58pm Photocopy Cha Cha:

thanks for this GG, even bubblegum is necessary food right now!
Let's be careful out there.
