@DOUG >>> RE goofus >>
The couesnophone, also known as the goofus or queenophone, is a free-reed musical instrument resembling a saxophone. Its reeds vibrate when the desired keys are activated and the player blows through a tube. ... However, the couesnophone is a polyphonic instrument, while the saxophone is monophonic.

Avatar 10:19am Dave B:

@Listener Robert - not sure if you saw this earlier....

wiki.videolan.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am WR:

I had always (pre internet) thought Buratti was pseudonym used by Mingus for this date for whatever reason. (Saw the record on lists, haven't heard it before). Now can easily see that Buratti was an active bassist.
Avatar 10:20am StringOFperils:

Once upon a time, long ago, in a sort of long-gone piano bar/boite hereabouts, Jaki Byard was in for a few days in a row. The place a had a kind of railing thing where you could hang out next to the piano (if you got there early), which I did. Jaki, free to roam while not part of an ensemble, played a lot of OUT stuff as I stared, slack-jawed, at his hands working away. Pretty avant really, but at one point he strayed into Beethoven's fifth, and with a wry look on his face, briefly glance sideways at me and said laconically, "Hip shit."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am doctorjazz:

A bit of both, Fred. Be glad to get back to the office (Monday), but the month off, with all its craziness and scariness, was kinda nice. Both daughters are home, went out biking a lot (as nasty weather permitted), slept in most days, caught up with some of my "not yet played" music, was nice.

This date does "crackle with energy", as Master Drummer put it. Maybe BECAUSE they could venture more ;out" than usual...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Doug Schulkind:

NICE: "With a wry look on his face, briefly glanced sideways at me and said laconically, 'Hip shit.'"

@WR
I had never heard (of) Buratti before stumbling on this record. Need to hear more!

Yesterday on NPR's Morning Edition, they had on poet Kwame Alexander. He was reading poems about grief sent in by listeners, and one of them said that exact thing! Poems are words made liquid that can crack stone, or somesuch. I love that that thought is hanging in the air right now.

Today's supposed to be Bandcamp's day of selling music without taking a cut (all proceeds to go to artists). Not sure if the site crashed, but have tried following a few links from my email there, and I don't get through. The app did go through, but really slowly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am ParUbi:

Big Blood has a ton of stuff on Bandcamp, and it's another artist support day on Bandcamp!!!
Avatar 11:26am Stork:

I'd down a few, Sinner. Course I might be expecting something psychoactive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am ParUbi:

I actually didn't see your message until mine posted, DrJ. Synchronistic!
Avatar 11:26am sinner:

Just living in Alabama is psychoactive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am doctorjazz:

Hey, ParUbi, great minds...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am CHUCK ROAST:

Good morning, sir. A dank day in the Mid-Atlantic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Doug Schulkind:

@Mr C
I was surprised and delighted when this come out in '16. Fingers crossed more might gurgle up in the future.

Hey-O, Stork-O!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am ParUbi:

Yes, Bandcamp is molassal (word?) today, as expected. My patience has been rewarded so far.
Avatar 11:28am coelacanth∅:

sinner, and maybe the next one "big blood"?
Avatar 11:29am sinner:

Hah! The Indie Rock Line.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Doug Schulkind:

Laura Veirs, with genius production from (future husband) Tucker Martine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

You are both rare and well done, CHUCK ROAST!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am doctorjazz:

Like that Viers track...
  11:31am Listener Gregory:

Laura Veirs is a favorite of mine. And her album with Neko Case and k.d. lang is really good as well. IMHO.
  11:31am Funky16Corners:

Awww yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am doctorjazz:

Cher channeling the good Doctor, watta trip!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am ParUbi:

Laura Veirs is a family favorite here-- "Wide-eyed and legless," right?
Avatar 11:32am StringOFperils:

Can't believe I've never heard this DJ cover (not that I ever hunkered down with Cher's catalog...but stilll...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am JtotheK:

great Cher 45! hi Doug. hi everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Uncle Michael:

Maybe the only Cher track from her Muscle Shoals thing that I really dig.
Avatar 11:32am TDK60:

Dr. John and Cher likely hung out in the same LA studios.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Jeff Golick:

Re bandcamp today: keep in mind that you can make the purchase today, and download later on, which might alleviate some server load.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Uncle Michael:

I suffer from severe load.
  11:34am Funky16Corners:

They def did. The first DJ album was recorded using spare Sonny and Cher studio time. His NOLA homeboy Harold Battiste was their musical director
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Doug Schulkind:

I've been a Laura Veirs devotee forever. Almost had her on live with me, but she woke up with a sore throat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Jeff Golick:

Funky16, dropping knowledge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Doug Schulkind:

She later appeared live on Irene Trudel's show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am doctorjazz:

OK, on Bandcamp (through my phone app, can't get there on my phone through Chrome), on Laura Viers page, any recommendations?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Doug Schulkind:

@Funky16Corners
Harold Battiste was producer of Gris-Gris, no?
Avatar 11:36am ottovonbqe:

I sat near patty smith in a marcrobiotic lunch cafe in soho once. She was talking with her agent about some business deal and how many points the band would get. Not very inspiring.
  11:37am Listener Gregory:

Doug, I have also gotten the "woke up with a sore throat" line. It's especially effective nowadays.
Avatar 11:37am TDK60:

..wait a second, Sonny & Cher co-produced his 2nd album, Babylon. Dr. J.
Avatar 11:38am Stork:

Irene Trudel?! You don't mean the legendary DJ who can soon be heard every Monday at noon on the Give The Drummer Radio StreamWeb, surely? Surely not THAT Irene Trudel?
Avatar 11:38am Brian in UK:

@doc, Saltbreakers is good, love her voice on that one. Don't Lose Yourself is a favourite.
  11:39am Listener Gregory:

Also, @doctorj, remember that it's i after e except after V.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Pedro in Arlington:

Had read a meh review of the new Lucinda but I've liked these two tracks. Thanks Doug.
Avatar 11:39am sinner:

I thought the first DJ record was Return of the DJ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Leonardo:

So stoked about Irene Trudel back on the air. That's the first tme I've used the word stoked I think. Is that how you spell it?
Avatar 11:40am coelacanth∅:

wonder if Lucind's talking about ronaldmcdonaldtrump
Avatar 11:40am coelacanth∅:

(Lucinda, that is)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

She talks about him a lot on her new record. Not by name, but quite clearly.
Avatar 11:41am Stork:

@Leonardo: excellently spelled!! I'm totally Storked, myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Irene Trudel:

Ha, Stork! Getting lots of love here this morning. @Doug, thanks for reminding me of that great Laura Veirs set. You can listen here: wfmu.org...
Avatar 11:41am Brian in UK:

What a set.
  11:41am Funky16Corners:

Nina!
  11:41am Funky16Corners:

Oh, Nina sample...
Avatar 11:42am Brian in UK:

Cannot imagine calling Lucinda, Cindy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am doctorjazz:

Really, TDK? Guess they had some clout in the biz.

Thanks, BiUK! There goes the music purchasing moratorium (did not too badly, though there were a few mess ups along the way).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Pedro in Arlington:

Aimee Mann had Cheeto Benito nailed way back during the last election and the lyrics are still a bullseye. Better analysis of the guy is still hard to find. youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am doctorjazz:

LG, of course i after a, except after c.
Avatar 11:44am burke:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am doctorjazz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Uncle Michael:

Hey, I almost forgot that it's Friday and you can listen to Hinky Dinky Time...NEXT!

  11:46am Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - There’s a whole huge story involving the connections between New Orleans and LA in the 60s and a lot of it hinges on Sonny and Cher. I did a whole thing on my soul show years ago, but I’ll have to devote an episode of Testify to it (though I covered a lot of it on my Dr John memorial)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Irene Trudel:

Loved that Lucinda-themed set! Well, much as I've loved hanging out with you all today I must get to work. I'm re-working a 2011 Tony Allen set (RIP) for the Soundcheck podcast, which posts Monday. And I'll catch you all on this stream Monday at noon. SO looking forward to it (and thanks again Doug)!
  11:47am Funky16Corners:

BTW Alvin figures in that story
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am doctorjazz:

Have to check out that link, Pedro, really like Aimee Mann.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

Happy Soundchecking, Irene. Blessings to King Tony Allen.
Avatar 11:49am StringOFperils:

Thanks for the great show today Doug. Have a good one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am doctorjazz:

Thanks, Irene, I'll watch our for the Sound check! (Glad John Schaffer was kept on at NYC-i had been one of the subscribers who wrote them I'd cancel it he was canned, seems the reaction helped).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Doug Schulkind:

Blessings to Emperor Uncle Michael! He will parade before us naked on a white stallion name Hinky in a matter of minutes, here on the Drummer Stream.

PLAYLIST: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Doug Schulkind:

It's been more fun than a barrel of monkeys, StringOFperils. (I'm not speaking for the monkeys, of course.)
  11:53am Funky16Corners:

Killing it with the soul ballads!
  11:53am Listener Gregory:

The word "cuz" is underused.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am doctorjazz:

And Doug, thanks for the 1st set, was great, now gotta dog up the old dancing shoes for the afternoon/2nd set

Speaking of Brew Sounds/Sound check...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Goyim in the AM:

Ah yes, the classic sweetly filthy to filthily filthy segue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Sweetly filthy to filthily filthy is my organizing principle, Goyim in the AM!
