@Andrew Waterloo: yes yes, next Bandcamp-waives-its-fees-so-more-money-goes-to-artists Day is May 1!

Good morning, ladies and germs. I've been listening from the beginning, but my keyboard doesn't seem to work in the shower.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am WR:

Hi all. Sanitizing yer groceries takes longer than going and buying them but ya'll probably already knew that. If you also knew of Cyrille's recording with Teitelbaum then you are ahead of in so many ways.

Avatar 9:23am Listener Gregory:

Teitlebaum recently left us, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Jeff Golick:

@Listener Gregory! Cleanest keyboard in town. And yes, sadly, Teitelbaum recently left this plane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Brian in UK:

Hello Jeff and kool kats.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am WR:

@Listener Gregory, a couple weeks ago I decided that if a $800 water proof phone could not go into the shower and survive then it was not worth the $800. And that I should try that before the 1 year warranty runs out in June. Though I don't comment much, slippery soap and all that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Jeff Golick:

Here's very good obit for Richard Teitelbaum, by Steve Smith: www.nytimes.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am WR:

LOL. Saw the greetings to Big Planet Noise and it reminded me that I put my cup of coffee in the microwave before going out shopping over an hour ago.
Avatar 9:28am Listener Gregory:

@WR, good luck with that. "Waterproof" apparently has a very technical definition, so if you are going to drop your phone, it is probably best to do so in a 500 cc beaker filled with distilled water for exactly 200 seconds, etc.
Avatar 9:30am Listener Gregory:

This is the only snakeoil I'd like to see our president pushing on national TV.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Jeff Golick:

Hey there, @Brian in UK! How goes the garden?
Avatar 9:33am TDK60:

Listener Gregory: Unbelievably bizarre recently. I've had to "pinch myself" so much recently that I'm thinking of instituting a daily pinch limit [dpl].
Avatar 9:35am Sem:

Hello and good morning, Jeff the G, and greetings all from the sunny, sunny shores of the mighty nice Bay of Fundy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Jeff Golick:

Avatar 9:43am Listener Gregory:

Second Hemphill composition of the set?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Jeff Golick:

Oh, yeah! Had to think for a second, @LG; forgot about the Berne.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am WR:

Archer track sure has a lot of percussing going on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Jeff Golick:

Oh yeah. The band lists four percussers.
Avatar 9:51am hyde:

this is a cool cover

OH.. so I'm not the only one buying too much music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am fleep:

Good morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am WR:

@Andrew Waterloo, since I saw the May 1 bandcamp day announced I am using that to put off any further purchases until then. Hoping I only remember the ones I have to have to have to have and not all the ones that I enjoyed in the moment on WFMU.
Avatar 10:00am Wolfgang:

Good day, all! Into the Out, once again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Jeff Golick:

Well hello, @rw, and @fleep, and @Mr Wolfgang von Stork!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Jeff Golick:

@Andrew Waterloo: you are not alone.

New week - new name! But you can call me Heimy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am doctorjazz:

Hello, folks!
  10:04am StringOFperils:

Good morning OUT there !
Avatar 10:04am Listener Gregory:

Jeff, there's a Hemphill album, "Fat man and the hard blues" from 1991. I don't know if that's the first appearance of Hard Blues. The album is a saxophone sextet, incl. Marty Ehrlich and James Carter.
Avatar 10:06am Wolfgang Weisenheimer:

This melody always makes me think of a childhood-era cartoon with the lyrics: "It's about time, it's about space it's about two men in every place." Blew my tiny young Storkie mind.
  10:06am DJpeterDE:

Saw the Pullen-Adams-Brown-Richmond quartet just once, 35? Years ago. That concert has stayed with me, vividly.
  10:06am rw:

Bandcamp day?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Jeff Golick:

Warm greetings, @doctorjazz and @StringOFPerils!
Avatar 10:08am duke:

Hiya Jeff and listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am doctorjazz:

Ah's flat...on my back.
  10:09am DJpeterDE:

Now that you’ve played two Shuffles, have to recommend third track of this disk:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Jeff Golick:

Hi, ho, @duke!

@LG: I think "Hard Blues" first appeared here: www.discogs.com...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Andrew Waterloo:

@rw, a day when Bandcamp doesn't take a cut of the sales.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Jeff Golick:

Alas, do not have that one, @DJpeterDE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Gary:

What was the nested song you spoke of in Neata BB? I heard a vaguely Batman-theme-feeling riff for a moment ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am WR:

Well deserved rest doctorjazz, you were up late last night ripping and zipping, thank you.
Avatar 10:13am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, that sounds right. I have that LP! Will have to dig it out.
Avatar 10:14am Listener Gregory:

@DJpeterDE, last night I came across a concert disc I forgot I had, Charles Mingus at Montreux, with the Adams/Pullen/Walrath group. Incredible performance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Jeff Golick:

@Gary, if you're able to keep listening, I think it'll become painfully clear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Jeff Golick:

What the next song lacks in sonic fidelity, it makes up for it in joyousness, I hope.
  10:16am DJpeterDE:

@LG yes yes that band... wow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Jeff Golick:

@DJpeterDe: jealous you got to see those guys. Great memory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am doctorjazz:

Sure, WR, happy to do it (had to see SNL at Home 1st).
(Been sending out a bunch of Sonny Rollins and Bird).
  10:19am DJpeterDE:

Maybe I’ll play the Jang track on my Tuesday show (John Tchicai’s birthday).
Avatar 10:20am Listener Gregory:

Cameron Brown still plays around Westchester County. I guess he's the only one still alive from the band you saw, DJPDE.
Avatar 10:22am hyde:

oh good. they always play the first few seconds of this on a WHRB promo for their jazz show, and i'm always sad when it fades out
  10:22am DJpeterDE:

Brown totally underrated! But then he had to follow Mingus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Jeff Golick:

That's good to hear, @LG. Was wondering.

@DJpeterDE, please do. Enjoyed your most recent show, btw.
  10:23am JtotheK:

Hi Jeff, hi everyone! Digging this set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Jeff Golick:

@JtotheK: glad to see you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Gary:

I made the mistake of googling "Jazz Batman" blog.timesunion.com...
  10:24am rw:

Boogie
  10:24am DJpeterDE:

Pullen Adams has this bit where Brown was taking a walking solo, and Pullen walked over to him and waved to being the tempo down, then Adams walked over and waved up, and Bown was turning his head from side to side while playing these gorgeous walking lines speeding up and slowing down.
  10:24am rw:

Stop
  10:24am rw:

Shuffle
  10:26am DJpeterDE:

Thanks Jeff! I overlapped a lot with Irene’s Konitz tribute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Jeff Golick:

Ha, @Gary, what you want is this: sunramusic.bandcamp.com...
Avatar 10:26am Wolfgang:

I'm agog at this set. Agog, I say!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am doctorjazz:

Never got to see The Mingus or McGregor bands, but saw Cameron Brown and Danny Richmond a number of times with the George Adams, Don Pullen Quartet. Great band!
Avatar 10:27am Listener Gregory:

Eric!?
Avatar 10:28am Listener Gregory:

@Wolfgang, I'm goga at this set! Goga, say I!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Gary:

Holy shit -- I need that in CD form with 48-pg booklet please Finders Keepers make this happen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am doctorjazz:

DJpeterDE, listened to and enjoyed the McEntyre, have to catch up with the last one. (Interesting how you can be doing nothing and be strapped for time).
Avatar 10:31am TDK60:

Huh, never knew Sun Ra did an album with some Blues Project guys.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am chresti:

Morning Jazz baby!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Jeff Golick:

Yah, @chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am chresti:

Morning Jeff and Outers!
  10:40am DJpeterDE:

Thanks DOC. Yes we are all strapped for time. I blame it mostly on actually cooking every night. But also I’ve had more time and better sleep and there better mental health since i stopped reading Twitter and news after dinner time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Doug Schulkind:

Clap clap clap clap!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am chresti:

Yesterday I ordered one of the Sun Ra singles collection cds from Amoeba, after hearing they're in trouble. Also because it has "Nuclear War" on it.
Avatar 10:42am Listener Gregory:

Answer to your question, Jeff: No.
Avatar 10:43am hyde:

i don't think Mingus is underrated, really. now Jimmy Giuffre....
  10:45am DJpeterDE:

I remember a 1990s car ad that used Haitian Fight Song too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Andrew Waterloo:

WE could use a set of Sun Ra covers
  10:47am Mark R:

Mingus is well-known and well-regarded within the jazz cognoscenti, but to the public at large, I'd say he's relatively unknown. Meaning if you walked up to the average guy on the street and asked him if he's heard of Duke Ellington, he'd say yes, but if you asked him about Charles Mingus, he wouldn't know. So on that basis, I'd say he's underrated. He's right up there with the best of the best, including Bach, Beethoven and Mozart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Gary:

Amoeba! Oh man. I have been binge-watching What's in My Bag
Avatar 10:49am Sem:

Oh, oh, Chilton. Look out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Andrew Waterloo:

Many late nights watching What's in my bag
Avatar 10:50am Listener Gregory:

No Sex 12" is a confusing title. I mean, 12" is pretty good.
  10:51am StringOFperils:

Coincidence. Once saw Alex Chilton at THE EL MOCAMBO, play a beautiful rendition of Goodbye Pork Pie Hat. It was tasteful and played straight. He looked down and saw that I got it on note one. It was a moment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am chresti:

I remember watching the one with Mike Kelly, what's in my bag.
  10:54am rw:

chresti, what did Mike Kelly have in his bag?
Avatar 10:57am hyde:

this is one of my favorite 80's records. i saw these guys about this time period, and they ripped it up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Jeff Golick:

I can barely imagine, @hyde.

Big greetings, @Mark R.!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am chresti:

rw, I don't remember, funny stuff.
  10:59am rw:

JG, the bands in this set are straight out of my college radio days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Jeff Golick:

You and me both, @rw.

@StringOFperils: that's a memory to cherish.
Avatar 11:01am hyde:

another great one! i saw these guys warm up for X on the Wild Gift tour
  11:02am rw:

chresti, I'll look it up. I only met Mike Kelley once and it was a LONG time ago, but mostly I remember talking about music. Eugene Chadbourne, R. Stevie, etc.
Avatar 11:04am Listener Gregory:

Very few people cover Neil Young's rock pieces, it seems to me. Never heard this before.
Avatar 11:05am hyde:

the Feelies i never saw until last year, and they were great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Jeff Golick:

Ok, @hyde, that's one band I did get to see in the actual 80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am chresti:

rw, I didn't know him personally, but have friends that played music with him, the last time I saw him was at a LAFMS show, in 2012.
  11:08am rw:

JG, Jealous. Never seen The Feelies.
Avatar 11:08am hyde:

@JG yeah, i don't know how i missed them. i bought all those early records when they came out. they really stand up, though, these days. they played two killer sets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Hola, Jeff and WFMU kin.
Avatar 11:10am Sem:

GST, howdeedo.
Avatar 11:10am TDK60:

Darn, was taking out the recycling during "Trem Two." But I can share my Lyres story. They came to town. The singer had obviously had too much fun before the show and did a hard fall off the stage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Jeff Golick:

Yo, @Granny Spicy Tuna!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

OK, now i expect Clay and Matty
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am doctorjazz:

Had to go for some COVID-19 related family issue, back for now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, same, @GST. I pipe their voices in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Jeff Golick:

Oh, dear, @doctorjazz. Hope all is okay!
  11:12am rw:

chresti, we probably have a few mutual friends. I remember vividly (as you probably do too) the day MK died. There was a palpable dark haze throughout the art world. The entire city seemed in shock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am chresti:

rw, yes, it was a month after that show, we know the guy that found him, (maybe you do too)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Gina Bacon:

Morning, drummerfolk!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Andrew Waterloo:

Ah.. one of the records I bought yesterday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Jeff Golick:

Back atcha, @Gina Bacon!
  11:19am rw:

Yeah, I've known FN for a long time. He and I have the same job!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am chresti:

Franco has known FN since the late 70s-early 80s, living in Pasadena.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am doctorjazz:

Saw The Feelies at 2019 Solid Sounds Festival (not in the 80s, though).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am chresti:

I thought so, rw!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Andrew Waterloo:

I loved the Feelies appearance on Something Wild
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Jeff, i feel it, too!
  11:27am rw:

I met FN around about a decade later. Late '80s. Super nice guy. And talented! AND a big supporter of this here radio station!
  11:29am rw:

Sorry, two decades. Math, ugh.
Avatar 11:29am hyde:

i saw this weird Husker Du show at the Rat in maybe 1984 where they were the headlining band but there was a secret band after them that turned out to be REM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am chresti:

Yeah, I met him after getting together with Franco, in 98.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am doctorjazz:

End of furlough this Friday. 5 more days to get stuff done (boy, did I think I'd get stuff done with all that time. I have cooked a bunch, though, for to listen to a bunch of stuff in my "new arrivals" pile (but there's still quite a backlog, even with avoiding new purchases for the month)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am chresti:

Ha, those decades blend together after awhile.@rw
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

oh this is lovely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Jeff Golick:

@hyde, that's crazy. Almost played some REM today, but kind of forgot.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Jeff Golick:

Re Kelley, @chresti * @rw: saw a huge Kelley retrospective at MoMA's PS1 back in 2013, with Jeff Jackson, and it has really stayed with me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Franco Twinkie:

Oh hell! I've been outside drawing when I should be on the chat board! Jeff, The first time I saw the Lyres was the day Andy Warhol died. It was at Al's Bar, downtown Los Angeles, February 22 1987. That night, I became a true believer in Jeff Conolly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Franco Twinkie: i remember where i was when Warhol died, too. But it was nowhere near as thrilling. Hi! (And hi, chresti!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am doctorjazz:

Franco, see my comment at 11:10, if you wanna..

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Franco Twinkie:

One night long ago, Chresti and I went to a show at Fuzzyland, a floating club in L.A. that had taken up residence in an old bowling ally in Highland Park. After the last band they had free form dancing right on the bowling lanes. On one side of us was Beck dancing by himself, and on the other was Mike Kelly dancing by himself. I pointed this out to her and said "Remember this night."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am doctorjazz:

Chresti, they're sending $$$, but to all their buddies, of course. Then they'll say there's not enough left to help anyone else (McConnell is already saying that).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Jeff Golick:

Belated greetings, @northguineahills!
Welcome any time, @coel!

Geri Allen took over the reins of the Univ. of Pittsburgh's Jazz Department from its founder Nathan Davis. She served in that position for less than four years before dying, rather suddenly, in 2017.

@Doug, bringing the realness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am chresti:

Not surprising@doc
Avatar 11:47am Listener Gregory:

@Doug, ridiculous that both she and Roney are no longer with us.
Allen's trio work with Paul Motian and Charlie Haden (under any of their names) is particularly fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am doctorjazz:

String Trio (in it's various incarnations) were great!
Avatar 11:52am Sem:

Thanks for the spins, Jeff, and the company, all. See you next time 'round the track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Doug Schulkind:

No slight to Geri Allen, but *I* would sound fabulous in a trio with Paul Motian and Charlie Haden.
Avatar 11:54am Listener Gregory:

@Doug, word.

WFMU DJs: when you make a playlist here, how many options do you have for the columns? Can you make up your own?
Avatar 11:56am TDK60:

Gracias DJ Jeff. // Remember folks, you have to set your own daily pinch limit (dpl). I can't do it for you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am doctorjazz:

Thanks, Jeff, great stuff! (As usual).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Jeff Golick:

Take care, @Sem, @ngh, @doc!

Speaking of Giuseppi Logan, I am planning to rebroadcast on May 22 his live appearance on my show, which took place May 21, 2010.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Jeff Golick:

Great to see you, and smell you later, @Franco!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am chresti:

Thanks Jeff, glad I woke up early today!

Thanks Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am WillCrete:

Thanks for all sonic selections this morning Jeff. Was especially enjoying that String Trio selection, as a fitting tribute to GL, and for just the lovely way they were laying down such a great and bumpy percussive halo in it all, all three dig in to their instruments so well. Am realizing that I am missing the visceral feeling of a train ride during this era of stay at home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Jeff Golick:

That's great, @Doug!
Me, too, @chresti!
Merci, @fred!

WFMU: giving us reasons to hang in there!
Thanks Jeff, WFMU skeleton crew, and everyone who supports this precious refuge.

Thanks a lot for another avant Sunday morning Jeff. Somehow this helps to resolve my fuzzy self-definition; vindicating, validating...I dunno. I enjoyed it. Leave it at that. ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am WR:

D:O over already? Time flies when mopping floors with bleach solution. Thank you Jeff. Onward all ya'll.
