Obscure algorithm case in point: "Credit ratings".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm ultradamno:

Well, we're already at a point where people treat you like you're amish if you don't have a smart phone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm melinda:

@ultradamno true.
  6:22pm The old pooperoo:

Actually, most of the Amish I've seen in the Wal Marts have smart phones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm ultradamno:

Those are probably mennonites, not amish
  6:23pm The old pooperoo:

Whatever, it still makes me feel kind of funny having a flip phone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Webhamster Henry:

1. get buzzword
2. Initial funding / stealth mode
3. ???
4. sucker some big fish into buying you
5. $$$$
  6:24pm JakeGould:

On an NYC public radio station they had some “expert” on saying people should not be taking more money out of the bank during this Coronavirus crisis. Logic being credit and debit and smartphone payments are “safer.” Nonsense. Cash is very useful in a fractured economy. I can buy stuff off quickly with cash. Cash is not “dirty” enough to get you sick. But you can’t trace cash, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Mark Hurst:

@Webham you've got it right. Though some startups skip step 3.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Webhamster Henry:

the 3. is where they pretend to work, "work fast and break things" while they are disrupting .. usually their own employees.
Avatar 6:26pm TDK60:

Hello.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Mark Hurst:

@Jake good point. Wonder how they define "safer"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Mark Hurst:

@TDK welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm ultradamno:

Microdoses. They even ruined acid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Ken From Hyde Park:

This makes Joe Hollier's Light Phone seem more appealing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Mark Hurst:

@Webham employees? "We're 'disrupting' employees... let's have gig workers only"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Webhamster Henry:

I paid with Apple PAu at the farmer's market on Saturday - they wanted to discourage cash and use non-contact payments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Mark Hurst:

@ultra "Don't do drugs, kids, or you might end up turning into a tech bro, which would be a shame"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Webhamster Henry:

The market was limited to a small number of people, so we could be spread out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Mark Hurst:

@Webham how about I ball up a five-spot and toss it to them, can I still get a banana bread?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm melinda:

@Jake yeah, I've been using credit cards in lieu of cash lately but I fear that corona will be used as an excuse to go cashless in the future.
  6:30pm JakeGould:

“Kids! Don’t do drugs! Unless you are entitled and white and have a great idea that can be distilled into an app with no vowels in its name!”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Webhamster Henry:

@mark YOU TOUCHED IT! EEEEEW! VIRUSSSS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Handy Haversack:

"Going cashless" just means "going employeeless."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Mark Hurst:

@Jake "Silly rabbit, drugs are for Stanford grads!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Webhamster Henry:

School boards might be hoping for "Teacherless".
  6:31pm JakeGould:

@Mark: They are riding on the myth that physical money is a dirt sponge. It might be. But it does not convey germs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Mark Hurst:

Less is more (margins)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Webhamster Henry:

Lots of my co-workers were Slavics and South Agents.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Mark Hurst:

@Jake good thing there's no such thing as viruses online... the Internet is completely squeaky clean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Webhamster Henry:

South Asians that is.
  6:33pm JakeGould:

Same public radio station had Mel Brooks’ son on yo discuss how pandemics play out. Dude has only written zombie fiction.
  6:34pm JakeGould:

Coronavirus is like malware that has logged into my nose port.
  6:35pm JakeGould:

I regularly pay cash tips even when the bill is charged and if I need to explain why then you’ve never worked a service job.
  6:37pm JakeGould:

@melinda: Germs last longer on non-porous surfaces than others. Germs and bacteria die in wood and paper because they get soaked into them then suffocate. Germs thrive on metals and plastics if there is moisture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Mark Hurst:

@Jake reminds me of how Silicon Valley delivery startups were skimming the tips people were trying to give - via digital, cashless transactions - to gig workers. Any opaque transaction is an open invitation for Silicon Valley-style exploitation & abuse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Ken From Hyde Park:

How long will it take to invent a version of electronic money that isn't traceable? On my phone, say I transfer $20 from may bank account into a "petty cash" app and when I buy something, it takes the money from that? The vendor just sees it as a virtual $10 bill + $.67 in virtual coins?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Webhamster Henry:

We had the Cicso Values™ on the little card we used to get into the building.
  6:38pm JakeGould:

@Mark: Bingo!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm ultradamno:

The promise of a bobblehead at the end of the day is why most people sacrifice for the sake of personal ethics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Webhamster Henry:

@Ken welcome to crypto currency! but more in line with our values is local currency. If you are in the Hudson Valley (that Hyde Park), check out the Hv Current.
  6:41pm JakeGould:

A museum in NYC once gave away free tote bags and admission for people who took a short survey. Part of the survey included providing your social security number.
  6:42pm AG:

Love the interview Mark. Any recommendations on where to buy the book? Preferably maximizing the money to the author?
  6:42pm The old pooperoo:

Survey: are you an idiot? Give us your SS number for the answer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm melinda:

@Jake I know. I've been using credit cards as a courtesy to the stores that want them instead of cash. They say corona lasts up to 24 hours on cardboard so I assume it's the same for paper money.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm ultradamno:

I read a story online about a woman in Florida (where else) who got arrested for putting plastic eggs stuffed with pornography in peoples mailboxes, but isn't basically this happening without consequence every minute? abcnews.go.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Webhamster Henry:

Hint: give them someone else's SSN. Someone should dox Mitch McConnell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Andrew Waterloo:

In Canada we have plastic money now
  6:45pm Karl Marx:

I would disagree, David
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Mark Hurst:

@AG thanks! I recommend the bookshop.org link at left - here 'tis: bookshop.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Andrew Waterloo:

@Ultradammo, if that was Berkly instead of Florida it would sound like an art project
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Handy Haversack:

The research is interesting, and it's always good to remember that the idea presented by finance and media is always whiter and younger than reality. But I remain extremely leery of solutions to the evils of capitalism that rely on more, different, or supposedly kinder forms of capitalism. I just have trouble buying that reality.
  6:47pm AG:

Appreciate it. I will definitely be purchasing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Ah, so. Thanks, Henry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Mark Hurst:

@Handy - David Courtwright's book makes a good case that capitalism has changed (see archives)... also Jonathan Tepper's book from a couple years back (interview also in archives). Idea being that capitalism has gotten more rapacious recently... longer argument than I can put in small comment box
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Webhamster Henry:

I got a little taste of the future because my electricity went out this afternoon - so that standard kind of emergency needs to work in a corona viral context.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Mark Hurst:

@AG thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Webhamster Henry:

Future: that is, the climate crisis billion dollar disaster season.
Avatar 6:51pm UncleMarty:

The greatest foe of democracy is capitalism.
Fetishising the cult of entrepreneurship solves nothing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Handy Haversack:

I hear you, Mark, and there are definitely pulses and waves in its rapaciousness ... but I think the nature of the beast might be hard to tamp down for long at a time. Peaks in high feudalism, early Industrial Revolution, and now as protections stop being enough ... I am not sure I think that the controls can ever hold it back on any kind of long-term basis.

Will go back to those archived shows! (And see if I posted the same comment!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Bas NL:

Over here there's local restaurants that cook for hospital staff too. They opened a funding campaign to cover the costs.. it works!
  6:52pm Skitch:

Great interview! As an Antri-preneur myself, I'll look forward to this read.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm melinda:

@Henry yeah, everything being online and remote right now just makes me think even more about how fragile our systems are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Webhamster Henry:

Yeah people are making lots of masks and food in my area.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Mark Hurst:

@Skitch thanks!

Cobol programmers back in demand! hooboy. thanks, Mark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Webhamster Henry:

ADD A TO SUM GIVING TOTAL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm melinda:

Small entrepreneurs are important. The alternative is all worker owned cooperatives and or state-owned business. I'm all for worker-owned cooperatives but it's unrealistic to expect that single model to dominate the whole economy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm listener james from westwood:
