A sleepy good morning from bed, y'all.
Avatar 8:56am duke:

Happy whatever Jeff and listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57am Jeff Golick:

Great to see you, @doctorjazz and @duke! Whatever indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58am Uncle Michael:

Well, I guess we all know why we're here. So why the hell don't we get on with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59am listener james from westwood:

I'm not so sure it's a radio thing. . . .

but it is a STREAM thing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00am Uncle Dub:

James!
Avatar 9:00am duke:

Channeling Rex this morning?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01am Jeff Golick:

@Uncle Michael! @listener james!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01am Uncle Michael:

I'm afraid my location has been disclosed, duke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am Doug Schulkind:

Good day, lovely ear-people! I'll be stepping out for some yoga berra, but I'll be back behind the plate in no time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am WR:

My single goal today is to not let you successfully tempt me to spend $ on bandcamp. Sounds doable? I'm not optimistic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Jeff Golick:

@Doug! Nobody goes to yoga anymore; it's too busy.
@WR! no promises.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am listener james from westwood:

Channeling Rex daily keeps the orgones flowing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am fred:

Good morning Jeff and all
Avatar 9:05am StringOFperils:

Good morning, Jeff the G, and D:O folk in the house.

Good afternoon, @fred!
@StringOFperils! Welcome!

@Listener Gregory! Listen to Dr. perils.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am doctorjazz:

This version of Ornette's band has such a bounce to it
Avatar 9:14am holland oats:

yo d:o! peeps (and i do mean peeps)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Jeff Golick:

Oh yeah, @holland oats! Happy Easter! Or happy Passover! Or happy woke-up-breathing Day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Jeff Golick:

Copyeditors in the house: I'm having second thoughts about the title capitalization rules on I HEARD IT OVER THE RADIO. It? Over?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am doctorjazz:

Released on the Beauty is a Rare Thing box, an essential set. Like this Lightcap too. (Is Fresh Sounds/New Talent still active?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Jeff Golick:

Not sure, @doc. This band also features: Tony Malaby, Bill McHenry, and Gerald Cleaver.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am listener james from westwood:

This is some divine waffle-making music.

@Jeff: Chicago Manual would say lowercase the "o"! But you set the style in your own house—consistency is the monarch!
Avatar 9:20am Stork:

Happy Bunny Exploitation Day, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Jeff Golick:

@Stork! Getting ready to "rockit" over there at the Klub?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @ljfw! So cap It and l/c over?
Avatar 9:22am Sem:

Lucky rabbits foot for sale here! Getchyour rabbits foot, get lucky!
Avatar 9:22am Listener Gregory:

I think "over" is pretty substantive, so I would capitalize it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am doctorjazz:

Cool band...saw McHenry (with a trumpeter whose name escapes me) inn a restaurant maybe 10-15 years ago on 5th Avenue Park Slope.
Avatar 9:23am Listener Gregory:

Waiting for the next song, "I Read it on the Comment Board." Hmmm, I didn't capitalize "on." Uhh....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am doctorjazz:

I would capitalize all the 1st letters,, which tells you that you shouldn't ask me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Jeff Golick:

Yo, @Sem! What did the rabbits do to deserve such a development, one wonders.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Uncle Michael:

Have fun:

Love Silke Eberhard! This is gew-gaw-gawjuss!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Jeff Golick:

(Guess I'm going with AP style over Chicago this morning.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Jeff Golick:

Well, @Stork, I know what I'm getting you for Easter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am doctorjazz:

The Takasi/Eberhard is indeed lovely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am doctorjazz:

Interesting how the melody, which is pretty, for a bit lost in the Ornette version's more upbeat approach.
Avatar 9:36am Stork:

Actually, I have that one, dear Jeff. I'll think of something, don't you worry - and maybe I can return the favor for a change!
  9:36am DJpeterDE:

Good morning everyone! Overslept today, was up late putting finishing touches on my Makanda Ken McIntyre show (airs Tuesday OVER the radio and also streaming WVUD.org 10p EDT). Ball’s in your court Jeff!
Avatar 9:37am Stork:

Sounds tasty, DJpeterDE. Where in DE are you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Jeff Golick:

@DJpeterDE! Great to see you. Gotta brush up on my Kalaparush.
Avatar 9:38am Stork:

PS @DJpeter - I assume you're in Germany and not in Delaware.
Avatar 9:40am Listener Gregory:

Hmmmmm, @UM. Chicago style doesn't capitalize "over," but NY Times style does. The Times style capitalizes longer prepositions but not shorter ones!!!
I am learning so much here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Jeff Golick:

@Stork, you know what happens when you assume...
  9:42am DJpeterDE:

I wish I were in Deutschland, but indeed in Delaware, not far from campus of U of D. Of course in tiny DE nothing is far from campus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am WR:

Regarding song title formatting, when I rip CDs I sometimes made adjustments to what the auto lookup finds. Sometimes I wonder if the CD cover should be the guide. Some releases will have all u/c for titles and / or performers. Of course it is unknown and often unlikely the the composers/artists had any input on anything before recent epoch of bandcamp etc. Thank you you professional wordsmiths for adding your considerations.
Avatar 9:44am TDK60:

I wish I were in Germany, New Zealand, Taiwan --or any place that takes medicine seriously.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am doctorjazz:

Been ripping and sending out music to some friends...next up are some box sets: Mercury R&B, Okeh R&B, British Beat and Goodbye, Babylon (an old time Gospel box). Is anyone is interested, let me know.
Avatar 9:46am Stork:

@DJpeter: hope you make it here sometime - maybe NEXT Spring.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am fred:

@doctorjazz: Goodbye, Babylon is great. The packaging is very nice too, though that obviously won't translate to digital
Avatar 9:51am Listener Gregory:

I saw this concert (maybe through your tweet, Jeff) and was impressed that professional musicians couldn't get their links to work, and one person's (Arto Lindsay?) image was sideways. So, we regular people are not the only helpless ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Jeff Golick:

Joe McPhee is 80, so I cut him some slack.
Avatar 9:53am Listener Gregory:

I cut all of them slack!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am doctorjazz:

@Fred, it is amazingly packaged, and a cool set!
DJpeterDE-i put the Tuesday show in my calendar, hopefully my phone reminds me, love to catch the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am doctorjazz:

So far, seen 2 streamed Seders, the City Winery one, and one lady night The Saturday Night Seder (Broadway folks). And zoomed one with family. Would like to catch some of these.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Doug Schulkind:

Joe McPhee and Herbie Hancock are 160.
Avatar 10:01am StringOFperils:

Many years ago, on a sunny afternoon bicycle ride past the Art Gallery of Ontario, I heard this wild and free saxophone wail, wrapped in strange metallic phlanging sounds, wafting on the breeze; and as I slowed to register it, there was David S. Ware, blowing the craziest extended solo, standing inside of the huge Henry Moore bronze sculpture that stands on that corner. It was unscheduled, and unscripted. And no one else was stopping to check it out. That was so cool. This Joe McPhee/Pauline Oliveros thing triggered that memory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Jeff Golick:

This McPhee performance was part of an ongoing fundraising effort for musicians, so if anyone is able and so moved: ess.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Jeff Golick:

WOW, @StringOFperils! What a memory and moment.
Avatar 10:04am Listener Gregory:

Strangely, the sound on your recording seems better than the original I heard when it was broadcast. The background is much more audible. You did something right there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Jeff Golick:

I'm happy to hear it, @LG, but I did nothing but press record. Tried to close up some digital gaps that came through due to internet lag, then realized I had missed most of them when listening this morning.
Avatar 10:08am Listener Gregory:

My listening was through WiFi + bluetooth speaker, so much may have gotten lost.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Jeff Golick:

@doc: We also watched some of that "Saturday Night Seder" -- was impressed that folks could sing harmony over zoom or whatever.
  10:18am DJpeterDE:

@doc and others interested in Ken McIntyre show: if you miss the stream, I’ll post it to my Mixcloud after. With bonus Hal Willner & Andy Gonzalez tracks (RIP)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am WR:

Caroline Kraabel & Pat Thomas benefit song for Louis Moholo-Moholo. Very tempting...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Jeff Golick:

Recorded at the Vortex Club in early March; must've been one of the last live events there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am doctorjazz:

@Jeff, it was pretty amazing; quite a professional production overall.

professional copyeditor:
For most book publishers, using Chicago Manual of Style, any four-letter-and-up preposition is capitalized.

But what do I know; I style “copyeditor” as one word.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am coelacanth∅:

Thanks again dr.j for the music. this is gonna take a while!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am doctorjazz:

Sure, Coel, thanks to you as well!
  10:38am Scяaps:

(in a TITLE [or headline, etc], a four-letter-and-up preposition is capped, I mean. Sheesh.)
  10:39am Dean:

Heh, Bluebook (legal stylebook) prescribes no capitalization for prepositions with four or fewer letter.
  10:41am Dean:

^letters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am fred:

Many people are saying the twitter handbook of style recommends random capitalization of any word, and frequent use of all caps. But I don't know, I'm not a copy-editor
  10:48am JtotheK:

Hiya! Seasonal Greeting JeffG, everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am coelacanth∅:

Scяaps re: "copyeditor" in my opinion, among may perversions of the english language occurring (mostly involving straight-up incorrect usage of meaning or incorrect usage of plurals) the compounding (?) of some words (copyeditor, micbreak, nevermind...) is an evolution that makes sense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am listener james from westwood:

From, I believe, his book, at the end of a recollection about working with Miles Davis, I have this quote of Hancock's on my computer monitor:

How can I integrate that cord into everything else we're doing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am listener james from westwood:

Or, if you're in a Byrds way, to refrain from busting.
  10:53am Dean:

I'm not kidding, but The Twits really was the name of one of my bands in high school.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am doctorjazz:

Just heard that a Medical Assistant in one of our offices died from COVID-19 (in a different office than I work in). Guess furlough ain't so bad.

Happy birthday Herbie.
Avatar 10:58am StringOFperils:

After the Oxford English Dictionary designated an emoticon as Word of the Year in 2015, I figured the living language was officially in free-jazz territory; so unless you're living under some form of editorial tyranny (professors, editors, fascistic overbearing pundits), you should style things however you think will best communicate your message to an audience. Sometimes the prettiest typographic 'word-picture' is best.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Jeff Golick:

Yup, @LG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am doctorjazz:

Time to walk Ozzie, he's getting restless. Take you along, of course.
Avatar 11:11am Listener Gregory:

We are fortunate that so many great musicians in that Davis second Quintet are still with us. Williams is the sad exception. I can only imagine what he might have done.
  11:12am Dean:

In liner notes from 1979, James Isaacs guesses that Hancock's on the left. But then Isaacs refers to the "fat and funky" bass lines of Ron Carter, but elsewhere in the notes Dave Holland gets credit on the track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Stanley:

(Arises from samadhi, floats over to keyboard) Meditation over, now some sensory pleasures. Herbie Hancock will do nicely.

Avatar 11:18am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, do we know the drummer on this one?
  11:18am Dean:

A track or two, I think, but not in full, docj. I need to give it some attention.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Jeff Golick:

@LG: I think it's Billy Hart, but still confirming...
  11:21am Dean:

This show is a break in style from my recent playlists, which have been mostly classical. Historical vocal recordings, early vocal music (i.e., medieval and Renaissance), more modern stuff like Britten, Takemitsu, Szymanowski. But then a few days ago I played Zeke's Flat Tracker, an album that lasts under 19 minutes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Jeff Golick:

This appears to be the Mwandishi band here:
Mwandishi / Herbie Hancock: Fender Rhodes
Mchezaji / Buster Williams: Bass
Jabali / Billy Hart: Drums
Mganga / Eddie Henderson: Trumpet, Flugelhorn
Mwile / Bennie Maupin: Bass clarinet, Tenor Sax
Pepo Mtoto / Julian Priester: Trombone

Avatar 11:24am TDK60:

That Mwandishi album reminds me of late night record parties of yore. I lost my old LP, have a CD now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am doctorjazz:

Have to say, wasn't paying much attention to Hancock during this, his "sell out" period.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Jeff Golick:

'morning, @rw!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Jeff Golick:

In 1971, this Mwandishi band was touring Europe with Weather Report, a double-bill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

This is rather excellent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Finally getting into the OUT! Greetings, Jeff and folx! Yeah!
  11:31am DJpeterDE:

The difference between Chick and Herbie “selling out” (your words not mine) is Corea played more while Hancock played less...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am doctorjazz:

What Doug said!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Jeff Golick:

@Granny Spicy Tuna, as I live and breathe. Let's keep breathing!
  11:33am DJpeterDE:

Early Mwandishi was OUT... so is this, compared to Headhunters
  11:34am DJpeterDE:

@doc I’m just saying, check this period Herbie out! (Maybe you meant you passed at the time but have since caught up with it)
  11:35am DJpeterDE:

Now if you were to say Rock-it was selling out, I’d have a hard time disagreeing
  11:35am Dean:

Return to Forever was a gateway for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Yeah yeah, i like this deep breathely thing! Let's do it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Jeff Golick:

I can start to understand why @Stork has over six hours of Herbie planned for you, up next, over here: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

i am READY for 6 hours of Herbie!
Avatar 11:39am hyde:

I used to love Return to Forever, but haven't listened to them for like 30 years
Avatar 11:40am Listener Gregory:

Mental arithmetic suggests that Herbie was 68 when he won the Best Album of the Year Grammy.
  11:40am Dean:

Saw them live once. Stevie Wonder joined them mid-show to do a medley. Lenny White was the stand-out soloist.
Avatar 11:40am hyde:

perusing my vinyl collection reveals i must have sold my Return to Forever records at some point
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am doctorjazz:

DJpeterDE, I've lost (most) of my "jazz snob" attitude from fusion days, but haven't caught up with this stuff. Worth doing, for sure.

my older brother got the original return to forever album (the album by Chick Corea) and i was all set to have Chick Corea be my very first concert, but then i guess my brother probably found a girl to take with him.
  11:41am Dean:

I continue to adore Isotope.
  11:42am Dean:

And, to tell the truth, Brand X.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Brian in UK:

Hello Jeff and al.

Ah the first Return to Forever with Flora Purim and Rodrigo's concerto.
  11:43am DJpeterDE:

@doc I was a snob then too.
Probably still a snob but about different things.
A sobering thought

Here are some memories from that '71 European tour: books.google.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Brian in UK:

Stanley, if you there, just seen the comments from Carol's show regarding old skool days. Amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Jeff Golick:

Hellos to @Brian in UK and @chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am WR:

@doctorjazz @1101. Wow, will search for that. Hope a recording (however lo-fi) findable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Jeff Golick:

Re prev comments: I am a snob about a lot of things. Have tried to fight it, have not been successful.
Avatar 11:52am StringOFperils:

Being here reminds me to not be snobby, because it demonstrates how little I know....a good place to get schooled.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Jeff Golick:

Same, @StringOFperils.
  11:53am DJpeterDE:

Someone on twitter recently reminded us that this theme was originally written for a cologne advert!
Avatar 11:53am Listener Gregory:

Don't want to start an electric vs. acoustic argument, but Herbie is *so good* on the piano that I feel every time he rocks out, we are missing a potential great work of art. He is really one of the greats, up there with Tatum, Bill Evans, whoever you might care to name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am coelacanth∅:

hey while i'm in the business is anyone else here interested in getting a wav file of a few David S Ware or Cecil Taylor albums?
(from my cds)
Avatar 11:54am TDK60:

Thanks for the sounds, Jeff. Hope to catch some of that Herbie special in The Stork Club; never been to that show yet. But first, a short nap will be attempted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Jeff Golick:

This is kind of a rare (for '74) acoustic set for HH. Love him on Rhodes, though, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am doctorjazz:

@WR, don't know if it was officially recorded (though they used to put out albums of NO.J&H highlights), but I'dbet a taper had putit out there somewhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am chresti:

I hear the parrots outside.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Jeff Golick:

@TDK60, always a pleasure. Do hit Das Stork Klub, if you can!

great to have a tribute to a living 80 year old. i love tributes to those who pass, but wow there are still a lot of greats out there who are still kicking. Sonny Rollins. Terry Riley. Ashe Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar. Jerry Lee Lewis. Et al.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
I think I deserve a special commendation for not peppering you with JRiver queries throughout your show!
  11:56am rw:

chresti, I may be the only one who knows what you're talking about.
