Avatar 11:58am Mary Wing:

Good day to you, Brian! Three minutes and counting until lift-off, please fasten your seatbelt and put your tray table and seat in the upright position.

You've always been an upright person, Mary Wing.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Carmichael:

Heya Mary and wingnuts. What an astonishing PLU video.

Hi, Mary, Wingnuts, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Phillippe Bastille:

Hey Granny, I recall (I think) that you and your partner had to isolate separately. Is that true? And have you had the opportunity to get back together?

Aw. Phillippe, how thoughtful to ask. I have one partner who i live with and another who lives in Oakland. Our two households negotiated an agreement that connects us. It's the only other space i enter. I am so grateful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Handy Haversack:

@Granny: I owe you an e-mail with an address in it! It's on my list!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Granny oh, that's great! Being around those you love are key to getting through this with any level of sanity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm coelacanth∅:

interesting that now 100% whatever is considerably louder than wfmu proper instead of considerably quieter, as it was *before*.

Handy! Get that address to me, please!

My girlfriend and her housemate are both very high risk, so it was a very cautious negotiation. I am grateful to be able to help them out with chores and rides.

Listening for a bit in the foreground before turning it down during next barrage of meetings. Yes the People Like Us portion of Ken's show was potent but the first half of Ken's show was pretty good as well. The boy has some potential.

Hello Doug, Granny, Phillippe, Carmichael, Handy, Yvang, Jake, coelacanth, maestroso, Sem, melinda, WR, Rich, and Roberto! Self-isolated Whatever is in EFFECT
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Phillippe Bastille:

@GST That is awesome. I'm worried about my 90 yr old mom. She is incredibly social and is going a little daft alone. She ran a little local shop and is still conditioned to chat with anyone within mouthshot. Taught her how to sign on to jitsi, we'll see if she takes advantage of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Stanley:

So this is where everyone is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm chresti:

Hi Mary and wingdingers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Mary and how are you surviving the lockdown, Ms. Wing?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm melinda:

Just read that John Prine died.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Melinda I saw that too. Is it just me or is the entertainment industry getting harder hit than many others?
Avatar 12:23pm Mary Wing:

HIya Stanley and chresti!

I'm okay, Phillippe, this is day 7 of not going outside for me so I am really really ready to leave the apartment!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm melinda:

@Phillippe it seems that way but there are probably media incentives and algorithms that skew what we're hearing about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm doctorjazz:

Hi one hundred percenters!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm melinda:

Then again, maybe being an entertainer puts you in contact with more people and germs.
Avatar 12:29pm Mary Wing:

My internet gets super-slow every day around noon, and like clockwork, now the stream has to rebuffer constantly, sheeesh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Phillippe Bastille:

@melinda scary but likely...

@Mary Hang in there. I don't know how I would survive in an apartment. Very fortunate to not only be able to go outside but to actually have something to do when I get out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Handy Haversack:

I think we just don't hear about the Amazon warehouse wage slaves and homeless people dying --only the entertainers. So selection bias makes it feel like music is hit harder.

Also: music industry as opposed to TV: more room for older people to still be relevant and active in music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm chresti:

Mary, maybe because everyone wakes up at noon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Michael 98145:

Hello, Mary. Distanced friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Handy both valid points.

BTW, saw my first-ever Goldeneye yesterday. Kind of sunning all ny himself. Looks like he forgot to take a left turn at Albuquerque
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm WR:

Regarding publicity of covid-19 deaths, when I read NY Times obit of Ellis Marsalis last week I browsed through other covid-19 deaths they were spotlighting, it was and is fairly varied. People from many walks of life. But the link sharing by people tends to focus on the celebrities.

Good morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm melinda:

@Handy good point about music industry. I was thinking about why we hear more about entertainers vs. other famous or distinguished people, and I bet entertainers are considered more newsworthy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Handy Haversack:

@Phillippe: so cool!

@chresti: That's fantastic. Franco's e-mail yesterday was a real bright spot, truly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Phillippe Bastille:

@WR I did not think to do that. Just been letting the tragic news wash over me like military grade body wash

  12:42pm rw:

chresti! Boy, spell check seems to have real trouble with your name.

Bummed about John Prine.
Avatar 12:43pm Mary Wing:

Hi doctorjazz, rw, and Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm WR:

Phillippe, it was heartbreaking to read them all. Particularly when thinking it was only 20 or 30 and multiplying that by 10000.... last year I had two close friends die from cancer and another 6 or so acquaintances pass. Getting to be that season for me. For nearly all of them it was deterioration over months.
6 or 7 months seemed fast. As we have all been learning this is a very different experience.
  12:45pm rw:

Hey Mary! Thanks as always for throwing this party every Wednesday. 100%.
Avatar 12:49pm Mary Wing:

@chresti @12:31 Heh, I was going to blame all the west coasters like you for waking up at 9 am!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Stanley:

Back in the day 23 minutes in Brussels was more than enough. I hear it's quite a different place now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm doctorjazz:

Sad about Prine as well, but he was a real set up for COVID-19; he was 73 years old, and was treated in recent years for cancer of the neck, and, even worse, lung cancer. The reports that he was "stable" were misleading-being stable on a respirator doesn't necessarily mean you're any better. It's basically stalling for time, hoping your lungs do some healing in thatextra time.
Avatar 12:51pm Mary Wing:

What would 23 minutes in Brussels be worth now, with inflation factored in?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm doctorjazz:

Like this Munya a whole lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Stanley:

@Mary - a damn good time that is what it would be!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Handy Haversack:

@Mary, I think you'd have to convert to the metric system ... carry the one ... adjust for wind speed ...

It's pretty complicated!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm doctorjazz:

Sweet article on Prine from about a year and a half ago. Bout so much a tribute or history, more gives a feel for him.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Handy Haversack:

Wow, this is great. This set is really going places. And more than just Belgium.
  1:02pm JakeGould:

Regarding Coronavirus deaths, I was reading that there is a 10x increase in people dying at home. Meaning per week in NYC 20-30 people die at home. Now the number is more like 200-300. And the rationale being these are undiagnosed Coronavirus cases or people who didn’t seek care. Or these are people who could not get the care they needed because of the stress/strain this whole thing is having on healthcare in general.

Sobering thought.

then one day this woman i was close with and i were kidding around with each-other and she started finding ways to slip the word smear into our (...i want to say "intercourse" but nobody knows what that means any more!) ...our playful conversation -and i didn't even notice. then she went "smear smear smear smear" and it didn't effect me. i'd been cured!

Avatar 2:04pm Mary Wing:

Oh, I think it will, Stanley!
Hi there Ken, by the way!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Mranny Lpicy Muna (e/em):

my sweetie is going to consult in his obscure ancient slang dictionary for olde synonyms for moist. "Strike while the iron is still moist!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Stanley:

Handy - I like that idea. Can't say I know it so my treatment will be without preconceptions.
chresti - either, so long as it's not a clammy handshake. That's one to avoid
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Mranny Lpicy Muna (e/em):

we're really reaching for diversions around here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Handy Haversack:

I would think, handshakewise, either is fine if you have a sense of the source. I expect my mechanic's handshake to have some grease to it. And I expect a ... I don't know, mozzarella puller to maybe have some excess moisture on there.

It's mystery moist what disturbs the soul.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Handy Haversack:

You really want a handshake to be all co- and no adhere.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm coelacanth∅:

we are experiencing technical difficulties
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Phillippe Bastille:

No one should be getting handshakes of any kind at the moment. A moist handshake in the current environment could only mean one of two things: the person recently coughed in their hand and didn't wipe it off on their pants or the person just finished washing their hands for 30 seconds but ran out of paper towels to dry off. Those are the only 2 options,.

Hi David! Hot *and* moist?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Mranny Lpicy Muna (e/em):

i've lost of this chatboard, however my sweetie would like you to know the oldest known usage of moist:
moist 1382
Slightly wet, imbued with moisture; containing liquid in a state of suspension or absorption; not dry; damp, humid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Mranny Lpicy Muna (e/em):

and yes i will send parched postcards to anyone who contacts me via my profile
Avatar 2:27pm Mary Wing:

I don't think they had vaginas in 1382, heh. Or at least nobody talked about them. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm coelacanth∅:

i just didn't want more stuff
-but some stuff is good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Mranny Lpicy Muna (e/em):

and 5 years later:
nesh 1387
Damp, moist, wet, chilly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Phillippe Bastille:

@coel my roommate at the time was an autocrosser and that xR4ti was much sought-after. They depreciated very quickly so they were a lot of performance for a little money. Until parts became scarce, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Mranny Lpicy Muna (e/em):

Mary Wing: my sweetie suspects that Chaucer may have invented the vagina around then
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm coelacanth∅:

Following up Granny's sweetie, the first verb usage was slightly before, in 1350: "ethe theruppon with thi breth, ant hit wol moysten aȝeyn, ant thenne hit wol cachen the foyl fast."

OED also notes: "In many contexts now differing from damp by having a neutral (sometimes, esp. with reference to the texture of food, good) rather than a negative sense, and in connoting a lesser degree of wetness. In early use the word had a wider application."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Mranny Lpicy Muna (e/em):
