we are lucky to have so many out of work weather forecasters in the chat on a regular basis
Avatar 3:15pm John from NP:

It's cold in my basement, forecast is for more cold
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Funky16Corners:

@Matt - I don't think the nonet "gigged" as such. They did at least one radio broadcast that I'm aware of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Matt from New Orleans:

Hi 80s & humid here. Feels close to 100. I’m sitting in the shade outside with about half of my liter sized cocktail remaining.
Avatar 3:15pm StringOFperils:

If this isn't soulful, I'll eat this paint-roller.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Funky16Corners:

Hey MichaelFishWasRight! (what was he right about??)
  3:16pm Michael Fish Was Right:

no hyphen in paint roller
Avatar 3:17pm Hubig Pie:

Miles Davis is cooler than a sack fulla mutherfuckers !
Avatar 3:17pm StringOFperils:

it's jazz spelling
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Funky16Corners:

HubigPie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Funky16Corners:

Bring your extra hyphens here and drop them wherever.
Avatar 3:18pm StringOFperils:

Miles was how I lost my hyphen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Funky16Corners:

Miles, Coltrane, Wynton Kelly, Jimmy Cobb and Paul Chambers (in this iteration)
  3:18pm Michael Fish Was Right:

and your wife lost her hymen?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Matt from New Orleans:

There’s a solid recent documentary about Miles. I think it’s on Netflix.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Funky16Corners:

I still have to check that out
Avatar 3:20pm StringOFperils:

John Szwed's book is pretty good
  3:20pm Michael Fish Was Right:

ive seen it.
  3:21pm Michael Fish Was Right:

miles's first wife was self-assured wasnt she!
Avatar 3:21pm StringOFperils:

He regretted wasting that marriage
Avatar 3:21pm Hubig Pie:

She was quite the dish
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Matt from New Orleans:

I really like the soundtrack to Elevator to the Gallows (Louis Malle’s first feature length narrative film) from around this time.
  3:22pm Michael Fish Was Right:

he shouldnt have slapped her around and been a control freak
Avatar 3:22pm StringOFperils:

too much Bolivian marching powder
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Franco Twinkie:

Larry! You good? I'm good. The rain is coming down and Miles is good, good, good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm doctorjazz:

Matt, I believe that Miles doc is Netflix, and I liked it as well.
So What BEFORE Miles had to speed it up in the 60's (which always made me a bit crazy).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Funky16Corners:

Franco! All is well. I haven't yet succumbed to cabin fever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Matt from New Orleans:

Franco I polished off both pies over the last two days. Probably a tad too much pie for my waistline but my tummy wasn’t complaining.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - I think Miles was put off by what a mark 'So What' made. It was a riff/improvisation that turned into something spectacular, but he didn't seem to love it the way his audience did.
Avatar 3:24pm John from NP:

If peeing your pants is cool, then consider me Miles Davis
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Franco Twinkie:

Doc, how are you and your clan?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Brian in UK:

Hello Larry. There is not going to be a huge storm, oops yes it just happened, how were we to know (at 3:16).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Funky16Corners:

Birth of the Pants
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Brian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Funky16Corners:

This right here. This is just perfect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Franco Twinkie:

Matt, Make another pie! Enjoy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Brian in UK:

Learned somethings from the Miles doc. Thought it was/is constructive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Larry, this set is soothing some rough patches in my psyche, thank you. Thanks to everyone keeping the WFMU boat floating.
Avatar 3:28pm Erica:

Sorry had to get my food heated up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm Funky16Corners:

I'm glad, Granny. This piece right here some of my favorite 'medicine'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Brian in UK:

Instructive is the new constructive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

And this is how we Testify!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Brian in UK:

...at the church of the mute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Phillippe Bastille:

Well this weather is starting to suck. Power cut out three times in the past 15 minutes. hard to keep this FMU lifeline active without power
Avatar 3:30pm StringOFperils:

Well, he's no Taylor Swift, whoever he is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm doctorjazz:

Sure, Larry, I understand playing the same tune over and over, night after night can get stale, and some musicians will change it to get some life back into it...still find those versions (uptempo) lose a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Hey, Testifiers( with or without failure or strength!)
Avatar 3:34pm Erica:

Yea String, he's no girl lol.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm doctorjazz:

@Franco-we're doing OK, thanks for asking. Home now, taking April off (not enough to do in the office for me and my associate).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - I agree with you. He seems to rush it in later recordings, which kind of kills the vibe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Kevin!
Avatar 3:37pm StringOFperils:

The faster versions are just Miles wanting to get out of there, to get to the next thing. The sessions were holding him up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Matt from New Orleans:

Do you have the first pressing Larry with the sailboat cover?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Funky16Corners:

I have the later one with Miles on the cover
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Matt from New Orleans:

The sailboat cover always reeked of the worst of exotica to me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Funky16Corners:

Miles was very unhappy about it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Doug Schulkind:

This is so much better than the Chet Baker plays with the Mariachi Brass record I could be listening to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Doug! No doubt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Brian in UK:

I have this vague recollection that Miles recorded a tune called Paraphernalia in the late Sixties. Am I imagining this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Doug Schulkind:

Here's the cover art Matt from NOLA is referring to: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Funky16Corners:

Philly Joe Jones on drums!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Matt from New Orleans:

I haven’t listened to my copy of Miles Davis & Gil Evans: The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings in a long time. This is making me want to pull it out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Brian in UK:

Oh he hated that according to the documentary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm doctorjazz:

BiUK, he did, on Miles in the Sky
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Funky16Corners:

It was sadly very common with black artists way into the 1960s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Brian in UK:

Thanks doc, now I remember a friend had a copy in the late Sixties.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Matt from New Orleans:

I saw Porgy and Bess at The Metropolitan Opera in 89 or 90.
Avatar 3:57pm Hubig Pie:

New Orleans Opera Assn. did a production of Porgy and Bess circa 2002
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Funky16Corners:

It's one of those pieces that gets remounted every few years, the way Threepenny Opera often does.
Avatar 4:01pm StringOFperils:

This recording, I think, has to have had a huge influence on the, much later, and much different, recordings of Jon Hassell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Funky16Corners:

I can't imagine a horn player coming up in the 60s, 70s or 80s that wouldn't have been touched in some way by these records
Avatar 4:05pm StringOFperils:

Even classical composers like Bernard Hermann, i.e. the film score for Scorcese's TAXI DRIVER
Avatar 4:06pm StringOFperils:

he's the Picasso of jazz
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Funky16Corners:

I read a bio of Gil Evans a few years back, and it kind of bugged me how someone who made so much great art, which was in its way commercially successful, didn't make much of a living doing it. It never took the edge off his sound, though. If anything he got edgier as the years wore on.
Avatar 4:07pm Erica:

More like the Elvis of Jazz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Funky16Corners:

I'll have to dig into his electric catalog at a later date.
Avatar 4:08pm Sem:

Hey, Larry the G. Along for the rest of the ride. Greets, Testifiers. Holed up in Aranjuez for a week, with sidetrips to Toledo for the el Grecos. Holy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Funky16Corners:

El Greco is one of my faves. Domenikos Theotokopolis!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Funky16Corners:

College art history for the win!
Avatar 4:09pm northguineahills:

Body here, brain not....(oh, and Miles!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Funky16Corners:

Hey NGH!
Avatar 4:10pm StringOFperils:

The Elvis/Picasso of jazz with Lou Reed's attitude, Sugar Ray Leonard's moves in the ring, and somebody who hasn't been born yet's fashion sense'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Funky16Corners:

The Bowie of Jazz. The only artists I can think of in rock that reinvented himself so frequently and successfully
Avatar 4:11pm StringOFperils:

ok you win. ha ha ha
Avatar 4:13pm Erica:

Ah Larry I was thinking of Bowie too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Funky16Corners:

There is some Lou Reed in there too.
Avatar 4:14pm StringOFperils:

He even had nice trumpets. Saw him near the end, with Bill Evans (not that one) on guitar, etc. He had this beautiful red (like anodized aluminum) horn. And he (characteristically) laid back (a lot), to let everyone else shine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm doctorjazz:

For a while, thus was the most overplayed classical piece out there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm doctorjazz:

Heading for a dog walk, listening, of course...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm Funky16Corners:

I think the harpist on this session made a nice payday for about 5 minutes work
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - Enjoy the fresh air. I was out foraging yesterday but I had a surgical mask on the whole time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Funky16Corners:

How's everybody else holding up? Any "essential" employees among us? My wife is a teacher and has been tele-teaching since it started.
Avatar 4:23pm northguineahills:

When I was an undergrad, it seemed every kid who wanted to be chic, had a coltrane or miles poster, so I ignored them. Then I saw Sam Rivers, William Parker, and Mathew Shipp live. That took me on a wild ride. Then I discovered Alice Coltrane before I graduated, then late Coltrane and electric Miles. I came full circle w/in a few years of that, but I still think most of those poster poseurs didn't have a clue, and were my age's bachelor pad music lads of the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Funky16Corners:

I have two children, Miles John and Sean Coltrane.
Avatar 4:25pm StringOFperils:

May they bear their titles proudly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Funky16Corners:

They do pretty well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm doctorjazz:

Other jazz versions of Concerto-MJQ and Jim Hall. (That I have)
Avatar 4:29pm northguineahills:

I love the music and person of John, and love the music of Miles, but can't stand the person that was Miles. But as I say many times, I can love the art and not like the artists, as otherwise, there will be little left for me to love in this world...
Avatar 4:30pm Erica:

So that explains your sons' names Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Funky16Corners:

@NGH - Yeah, Miles as a person is a tough sell, but I try to look at the life of a black artist of his stature in the 40s/50s/60s and I understand his anger, Certainly not the physical manifestations thereof. But the music has always hit me so deeply. Coltrane is of course the perfect contrast (as a person).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - Yes, though Miles isn't unheard of in kids his age, when people hear 'Sean Coltrane' they start asking questions.
Avatar 4:38pm Erica:

Oh my Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Funky16Corners:

BTW - I always assumed - because if the quality - that this must have been a radio broadcast, but there isn't any info in that regard on the CD
Avatar 4:38pm StringOFperils:

@NorthGH>>The period of time that encompassed Miles coming up was the culmination of decades of unbelievable ugliness with respect to the lives of black people in America. Miles was a well-heeled dentist's son, but that had little bearing on his profound disgust with the racial thing, and with the predatory exploitative nature of the music industry that he perceived as being what he might call a bunch of scheming white motherfuckers. He was an angry man (never a pretty thing, no matter the circumstances). the substance abuse added to his irrasciblity, in additon to which creative genius is impatient and anxious. I'd be afraid to be in a room with the guy, but I was alway empathetic with his outlook, despite the hideous appearance of his outward personality at times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Matt from New Orleans:

Just read that Mort Drucker passed away. I always loved his work in Mad Magazine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm doctorjazz:

Charlie Parker is supposed to have really crapped on Miles when he was young and in Bird's band. Hard to know how much that Affected Miles (or Bird's heroin use as well), but he was still at an impressionable age.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Funky16Corners:

@Matt - I saw that. Drucker was a big fave of mine when I was a teenaged cartoonist
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - In addition to being a virtuoso, Bird also seemed to pass on his bad habits to younger band members, as Davis reportedly did with Coltrane
Avatar 4:43pm northguineahills:

My caveat w/ Miles, comes w/ his treatment of his first two wives, especially Betty. Coltrane was an addict, as far as the eyewitness record goes, he never mistreated his wives, possibly save cheating on Juanita when he met Alice, and I think the universe is better for that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Matt from New Orleans:

Larry is this from a different date en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Funky16Corners:

It's one of the great conundrums, how some people are capable of making beautiful art, while simultaneously being complete assholes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Funky16Corners:

@Matt - Same date, but a different track list. The CD I have doesn't sound like it was dubbed from master tapes, but who knows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Matt from New Orleans:

I have the two CD version of the complete concert released in 1998. It’s Mono not the pseudo-stereo they made.
Avatar 4:50pm Sem:

Enjoying from the kitchen. Believe the cooking is better when Miles and Evans are cooking. See you again, LG, and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Funky16Corners:

Bye Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Matt from New Orleans:

Actually got the promo from WBAR as none of the other student DJs liked Jazz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Funky16Corners:

I'm going to have to do some research to find out if these are just dubs or from a separate live recording of the same date.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Doug Schulkind:

When I listen to music like this, I feel like I am being rewarded for being a grownup.
Avatar 4:54pm StringOFperils:

There has to be some kind of payout.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Larry, lovely music, later,

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Matt from New Orleans:

Thanks Larry. Always nice to revisit Miles and Gil.

See you next time, Theo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm WR:

Thank you so much for this Evans/Miles program. Thursday I thought I was going to be quietly doing paperwork listening to this. Customer had an emergency which took all afternoon. Kept the stream going in the background but couldn't focus on it. Have today off so am sinking in deep with it as I does a bit of sorting/ cleaning. I have all these recordings but your organization and commentary is all spot on. Digging it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks WR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm WR:

So cool with It Ain't Necessarily So, with such a well known, well defined melody line, to hear what Miles does with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Funky16Corners:

Indeed. It’s great to see him swerve like that, avoiding expectations and going in an unexpected direction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm WR:

So cool with It Ain't Necessarily So, with such a well known, well defined melody line, to hear what Miles does with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm WR:

Oops. Didn't mean to post that twice. Phone said it failed so I clicked retry. And I initially wrote my comment before you did your back announcement. Again, spot on. IMHO.
