With billows and blasts from choirs and orchesters
Buskers and talkers
Big bands and squawkers,
the Stork Club has retained its qualities of decaying elegance and dwindling significance since the late 1950s.

Are they trying to evoke Smashing Pumpkins here?
Avatar 12:18pm Sem:

Good day to you, Stork, clubbers, and all who happen upon this musical slip and slide ride.
  12:20pm Listener Robert:

Darn, I meant Porno for Pyros, not Pumpkins.
  12:25pm Listener Robert:

I meant particularly that "A Long Dress" had that bass line from "We'll Make Great Pets", don't know whether that's a rip-off or a tribute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm chresti:

Hi Stork club!
Avatar 12:26pm Wolfgang:

Howdy, Sem - Robert! Chresti!! Hi, yourself!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm fred:

I really like John Adams' music. Which is why I'm puzzled at having no memory of the music of Lucinda Childs' Available Light. I guess the dance was too good
Avatar 1:05pm Wolfgang von Monocle:

It really is, SoP. Oops , left out Jaki Byard! Must remedy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm spodiodi:

forgot about that, thanks, Stork! what a looker Egghead was
  1:08pm Listener Robert:

Well, Herr von Monocle, I think a friend of mine had the Porno for Pyros CD in a Smashing Pumpkins case. No, I think the Smashing Pumpkins label was the one I saw when I next looked at a music label -- like about a year later.

My friend and I really WERE pyros, on the way to a shoot.
Avatar 1:26pm StringOFperils:

only saw Horace Parlan once...I was astonished to see how much of his left hand was missing. When life gives you lemons....
Avatar 1:27pm Wolfgang von Monocle:

Horace Parlan should get his own birthday tribute some day.
Avatar 1:28pm StringOFperils:

:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm spodiodi:

*bop*
Avatar 1:29pm Wolfgang von Monocle:

Wiki sez: In his birth year, Parlan was stricken with polio, resulting in the partial crippling of his right hand. The handicap contributed to his development of a particularly "pungent" left-hand chord voicing style, while comping with highly rhythmic phrases with the right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

wow, i love stories like that
Avatar 1:31pm StringOFperils:

ah...I'm relying on diminishing visual memory. I was in a sort of balcony right over the keyboard...just remember it freaked me out

had a similar issue myself yesterday, trying to make my old machine do too much at once
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm spodiodi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Hi Stork. I've been lurking since just past noon -- I'm not really sitting at my keyboard much today. I'm just stopping here to tell you how much I enjoy your show. Thanks for putting together such great sets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm doctorjazz:

Have a lot of things plugged in, most of them for a while. One extra unit, my Pono player, maybe I'll disconnect it. Have to find and delete scattered single tracks, then try again.
Avatar 1:42pm Wolfgang von Monocle:

Wendy, thanks for checking in - and for those make-my-day kinda words.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm WR:

Another 1.5 hand pianist. Edward Frank of New Orleans.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm spodiodi:

has anyone "attended" any "formal" online-converted performances since this all began?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm spodiodi:

@Wolfgang von Monocle
According to his obit in the New York Times, Bob Dorough's wife had a nickname for him:

Thorough Dorough

I'd say that's a rather nice endorsement.

From Wikipedia:

"Dippermouth Blues" is a song first recorded by King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band for Gennett Records in April 1923 and for Okeh Records in June of that same year. It is most often attributed to Joe "King" Oliver, though some have argued that Louis Armstrong was in fact the composer. This is partly because "Dippermouth," in the song's title, was a nickname of Armstrong's. (Source = Gary Giddens)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm doctorjazz:

Who am I to argue with Gary Giddens? (always heard it the way i had posted it, though).

Wait just a minute!!! Found this quote from Dave Brubeck about Paul Desmond:

"Some people called him the Stork—'Cause he would stand on one leg and leaned on the piano. But that ... that was when he was playing great. What used to scare me is I'd look at him and it would just be whites in his eyes, wouldn't be any eyeballs."

Is the world big enough for three Storks (with apologies to George "The Stork" Theodore)??
