Hello David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Yvang:

More dancing statues in the streets than real people these days, they fear no virus...Hello David! hello travelers with one L!
Avatar 3:01pm fred:

Good evening David and fellow travelers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm redkayak:

Good afternoon/evening everyone :)
Avatar 3:02pm TDK60:

Wie gehts, David and commuters, from an isolation unit high over metro New York. Things are odd let's say.
Avatar 3:02pm Sem:

Hello, David, and all aboard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm chresti:

Hello David and travelers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm David Dichelle:

Greetings Bas, Yvang, Fred, Redkayak, TDK60, Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm David Dichelle:

And Chresti!
  3:06pm allanToronto:

@tdk60. Hey, not totally isolated. Hope it's going okay, and hoping it doesn't get batshit crazier. Hang in there !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm David Dichelle:

And hello Allan! Yes, things are odd everywhere to say the least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm doctorjazz:

Love this 1920's era jazz, so clunky and sweet!
Hi folks (no Subway for now, unless it's take out)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm David Dichelle:

Hi Dr J!
  3:09pm allanToronto:

Everybody foxtrot !
Avatar 3:09pm βrian:

What music was popular around 1919, say?
Avatar 3:09pm TDK60:

..thanks Allan. We are all changed round the globe. Here, we're still allowed out. I only go out for rare food runs, and exercise walks around midnight (less people).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm chresti:

I like the old stuff, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm doctorjazz:

Bix Beiderbeck and Frankie Trubauer the stars in this band, sounds like Bix on cornet here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm redkayak:

This is some fine music...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm doctorjazz:

Listen to Bix...his breaks are short, but he sounds like he's levitating out of the band. He has a combination of warmth and snap that's so engaging.
  3:17pm allanToronto:

I once found 3/4 of a Paul Whiteman 78 in a thrift store, and bought it anyway. just to stare at it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

…hopping on at this stop, howdy David and WFMU pals around the world!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Cmurtha:

Helllo everyone!
Avatar 3:20pm TDK60:

Hi Granny, plenty of room on the seats. please remember to maintain a mick-fleetwood-unit (mfu) distance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm doctorjazz:

Lots of Bix
Avatar 3:21pm Wolfgang der Storch:

Hey, everybody! Let's Keep in Kontinental!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Stanley:

I'm travelling first class, today.
  3:21pm allanToronto:

The Ken Burns multi-part history of jazz film provides a fitting summary of the deep importance of everyone mentioned (if you haven't already seen it)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Doug Schulkind:

News is circulating of the death of trumpeter Wallace Roney. He was only 59. I saw perform as a teenager with Art Blakey. I have never seen anyone that young be that great.
Avatar 3:23pm TDK60:

...you may have heard elsewhere on WFMU that some are using a joey-ramone-unit (jru).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm David Dichelle:

Sad news, Doug.
  3:24pm allanToronto:

Sad news indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm David Dichelle:

Stanley, your first-class compartment always awaits your arrival.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm David Dichelle:

Hey there Spodiodi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm doctorjazz:

Thus Fair Annie is lovely.
Avatar 3:32pm spodiodi:

i think Continental Subway may have more instances of "bonny" popping up in lyrics than any other on wfmu \m/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm David Dichelle:

More fluting east and west as well, I'd think.
  3:34pm allanToronto:

More DADGAD, and less DEAD GOD here
Avatar 3:34pm spodiodi:

fluting like nobody's business
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm doctorjazz:

Haven't done the comparison, but I bet Shrunken Planet gives some competition.
Avatar 3:35pm spodiodi:

this is why we need more robots
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

yes,i think i've heard a few bonnies in Shrunken Planet!
Avatar 3:39pm spodiodi:

that word always reminds me of a poem (etc.) that my great uncle told me always reminded him of me:
"Bobby Shafto’s gone to sea,
Silver buckles at his knee;
He’ll come back and marry me,
Bonny Bobby Shafto!"
Avatar 3:40pm spodiodi:

also a character in Neal Stephenson lore
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm David Dichelle:

No "bonny" in the next two versions...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Saturday mornings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm chresti:

Ah, thanks Granny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm doctorjazz:

6-9 AM Eastern time on Saturdays, likely why you haven't heard it, Chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Shrunken Planet is my favorite program to pull out an archive and drift into a state of pleasant relaxation, the first set is usually ambient
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

when i was in a major state of insomnia, i would wake up at 3am Pacific and put SP on. So lovely…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Bas NL:

I listen Shrunken Planet through the archives every week.. highly recommended!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm chresti:

Doh! No wonder I haven't heard it, I usually sleep in on Saturdays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm chresti:

I'll def check it out.
Avatar 3:47pm TDK60:

yeh chresti, I'm a shrinky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm doctorjazz:

I work some Saturdays, tend to listen then. When I'm not, also sleep in.

Was that Telstar flying by?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Bas NL:

Don't touch (me)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm David Dichelle:

Flying by and drawn by a team of horses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Bas NL:

(That was the translation of 'afblijven'.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm David Dichelle:

Yes, a bit of a false friend to German aufbleiben.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm chris:

digging the show, and this Kawa track. hi, David and folks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Rob W:

Ah yes, nothing like a little Yunnan province reggae!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Bas NL:

More like abbleiben.. if that's a German word??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm David Dichelle:

Hey Chris and Rob! Yes, the Mandarin pinyin spelling is surely a bit off on that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm David Dichelle:

Bas, yes that makes sense, but abbleiben means "to be away somewhere".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Bas NL:

Hmm.. no, that's not it..
Avatar 4:10pm northguineahills:

Here and there, only wfmu and the position of the sun lets me know what time it is....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm David Dichelle:

Ahoy there, NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Doug Schulkind:

I just did a test connection with WFMU. I'll be filling in for Matt Fiveash's Weekly World Blues next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm David Dichelle:

Bas: Yes, I was just thinking the words might be cognates with different meanings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm David Dichelle:

Hey Doug, that's great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Doug Schulkind:

The problem is, how do I fill in for Weekly World Blues, but still listen to Bodega Pop Live?
Avatar 4:13pm northguineahills:

would you prefer traditional chinese, or simplified chinese over pinyin?
Avatar 4:14pm spodiodi:

cool, Doug
Avatar 4:14pm northguineahills:

Konji is essentially classical chinese (written), so, I only know place names in Japan in classical chinese.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm David Dichelle:

NGH: I put the simplified in the comments, hope you can recognize some of that as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm David Dichelle:

Doug: Stereo headphones of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Phillippe Bastille:

Howdy. Sorry I'm late, thought I left my ticket in my other pants. Wasn't there so I thought maybe it was in my other other pants. Wasn't there either. Then I thought maybe it was in my jacket, so I looked there, but no ticket. Then I realized because of covid-19 no one would be watching the turnstiles so here I am. Still don't know where that ticket is though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Doug: this is the kind of problem we all face every day on WFMU! Still, that's my favorite kind of problem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm chresti:

Ooh, that's harsh, missing Bodega. @Doug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Phillippe Bastille:

@granny that's my second favorite kind of problem. Having too much money is my favorite problem. Unfortunately, the latter is never a problem I've had the opportunity to experience. Would not mind trying though. I'd give FMU a big piece of it.
Avatar 4:23pm TDK60:

David, that's oud in the Zorn track?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Phillippe Bastille: may you have your favorite kind of problems!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm David Dichelle:

Phillippe, don't worry any old ticket will do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm David Dichelle:

TDK60: Yes, in fact:
Composed By – John Zorn
Drums, Percussion – Mathias Künzli
Electric Bass, Oud – Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz
Guitar – Jon Madof
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Phillippe Bastille:

@granny thanks @david and thanks
  4:25pm βrian:

I used an old dry-cleaning ticket.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm David Dichelle:

ßrian, those in fact count as annual passes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm chresti:

TDK60, do you have any stringed instruments in your isolation chamber?
Avatar 4:30pm spodiodi:

ix nay on the ickets tay
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Phillippe Bastille:

Hey spodiodi! hey chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm doctorjazz:

Aww, stepped away and missed the Zorn.
Avatar 4:31pm spodiodi:

hi Phillippe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm chresti:

Hi spodiodi and Phillippe!
Avatar 4:32pm TDK60:

Hi chresti. I do play some acoustic guitar these days. I have a Serb tamburica too. Used to play electric bass in combos.
Avatar 4:33pm spodiodi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm chresti:

TDK60, good.
Avatar 4:37pm northguineahills:

Nope, can't read either, David, just what I memorized on the subways and trains in Japan....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm David Dichelle:

You too, Doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm David Dichelle:

I changed the Kawa track to "Drink and Drunk", which I found somewhere but all the clicky-stars got deleted in the process, sorry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm David Dichelle:

And the stars are back, not sure what I did there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm chresti:

I've noticed that before, the clicky- stars disappear when the playlist is being edited, then re-appear later
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm David Dichelle:

Oh okay, thanks Chresti
Avatar 4:49pm Sem:

Enjoying this very much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm David Dichelle:

Thanks for reminding me that I have that Muzikas album, managed to locate it. Phew. Chaos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm David Dichelle:

Happy to help, Márta Sebestyén is worth digging for.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Carmichael:

Heya David and passengers. Have you mentioned what and where the picture is?
Avatar 5:01pm northguineahills:

Looks like I got a GIS job in Gainesville, I just got emailed a shitload of docs to fill out, now I just need to have some friends fudge my gap of employment as freelance.
Avatar 5:02pm TDK60:

Ah good NGH, you may have some Gainesville employment...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm David Dichelle:

Hey Carmichael, thanks for asking. That is a nearby outdoor sculpture and the surrounding area. Bayrischer Platz in Leipzig to be specific.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Rob W:

Congratulations northguineahills - what better way to celebrate than with Ensemble National des percussions de Guinée!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm chresti:

And be gainfully employed @ngh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm David Dichelle:

NGH: Sounds very promising!
Avatar 5:04pm TDK60:

..that was my intended, flopped joke, Chresti. // David, nearby to Radio Blau or your home?
Avatar 5:04pm JakeGould:

Hello all! Today was the first day I went out wearing a bandana; not to protect me from Corona-cooties but rather my spring allergies are slowly starting. Rather wear that to catch my sneezes and coughs than get sagger eyed by others in the street.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm David Dichelle:

Closer to Radio Blau, but it's all the same general area.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm David Dichelle:

Hello Jake!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm chresti:

Thanks TDK60, couldn't help it.
Avatar 5:09pm northguineahills:

Fun fact: The British signed a treaty w/ the French that allowed them to colonize the Gambia river w/in canon shot of a war ship, which is why the Gambia is so narrow surrounded by Senagal.

  5:18pm Dean:

Listened last night to a bunch of Penderecki, including the awesome Polymorphy, a recording from 1966, Poland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm chresti:

Haha Jake.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm David Dichelle:

Happy to be able to continue to broadcast live, Jake.
Avatar 5:21pm JakeGould:

Thanks David. I passed by a pet food store — one of the few places open nowadays in my neighborhood — and they had a big canvas pro-printed banner that read something like: “Pet Food Grocer — Essential Business”

There you go!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm David Dichelle:

Hello Dean, the next piece will be from around that era.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm David Dichelle:

Lots of shops are open here but only for street sales. They open the door and the cash register is right behind it like a kiosk.
Avatar 5:26pm TDK60:

Some bars and restaurants in NYC are open, for takeout and delivery only. Supermarkets and grocery stores, drug, hardware are open.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm David Dichelle:

Same here, minus the hardware.
Avatar 5:27pm TDK60:

David, how is the medical situation in the Leipzig area?
Avatar 5:29pm JakeGould:

@David: In NYC that is happening at many food places since people have to wait for “to go” orders and nobody wants anyone waiting inside. But notoriously crammed corner grocery stores and delis and such still let people in.

What is also creepy — but understandable — is how the few places that are open have some very contracted hours. Like 10:30am to 6:00pm.

Also, due to lack of real traffic many restaurants are just shutting down completely for now. I mean if you are only selling like 20 take out orders per day, there’s not even a break-even point.
Avatar 5:29pm Sem:

My stop. Thank you, David. Be well, see you and all next time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm David Dichelle:

TDK60: We are thankfully somewhat behind other areas, hopefully all these measures will help.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm David Dichelle:

Thanks Sem, take good care!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm Doug Schulkind:

Jake: Many take-out places are doing streetside service here. I imagine that will increase when the weather warms up again.
Avatar 5:39pm JakeGould:

@David: True. But one notable take out option that is missing in many Brooklyn neighborhoods are Chinese restaurants. Many that are mere hole-in-the-wall places thgat you would think could rake it in nowadays are closed (in my opinion) due to anti-Asian backlash. Very sad that has to happen in the middle of this.
Avatar 5:39pm TDK60:

Hats off to the millions still working. Like the many trucks I see passing nearby on a bridge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm doctorjazz:

Home, back for the tail end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm Carmichael:

I am at my desk at work as we speak. No one else in the whole place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm David Dichelle:

Welcome back, Dr J!
Avatar 5:41pm TDK60:

Yes Jake, my local Chinese takeout place closed, disappointing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm David Dichelle:

Jake: Yes, that is a sad situation as well.
Avatar 5:42pm JakeGould:

@TDK60: Sad. Ditto with many 99 cent stores. And in my part of Brooklyn I have 5-6 laundromats within a 1-2 block radius that are Chinese owned… All closed. And as I type this I realized the old Chinese ladies who collect cans have not been seen in days either.
Avatar 5:43pm TDK60:

.protests happening- med workers at hospital in the Bronx, Amazon workers in Staten Island; etc.. (wanting more PPE)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm David Dichelle:

Carmichael: That must be very strange.
Avatar 5:44pm TDK60:

I have a nephew working alone in an office, likes it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Carmichael:

It is odd, as there are usually about 25-30 people around me. Will stay this way for most of April, I suppose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm David Dichelle:

That is a big question: How long will these measures need to continue?
Avatar 5:48pm JakeGould:

@TDK60: Did you hear about the number of unemployment claims nationally as well as in NY state? It’s crazy. Once the dust settles from Coronavirus I’m confident there will be at least one major march of some kind. I mean read this…

“The New York State Department of Labor last week received over seven million calls from those seeking to file unemployment claims as a result of coronavirus-related shutdowns. Typically, the office gets 50,000 calls a week…” gothamist.com...
Avatar 5:51pm TDK60:

Things are changing. All sorts of new possible scenarios, good and bad. // RIP Penderecki.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm chresti:

Oh yeah, unemployment. Guess I'll be applying soon.
I heard it slowed down a bit in California. I think we're waiting for a vaccine to be available before going back to normal, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm David Dichelle:

Sorry to hear that, Chresti.
Avatar 5:57pm TDK60:

I'm outta work too. // Thanks again for another fine show David; till againwhen...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm doctorjazz:

Vaccine time frame is 1 to one and a half years...antiviral medication could be sooner, from what I've read.
Avatar 5:58pm JakeGould:

@chesti: The way I understand it is a viable vaccine might only arrive around September. But I think a more important tool is simply broad, universal testing. I’m pretty confident I had it in February based on the weird extremeness of my symptoms. Thus I should have anti-bodies… Thus I cannot be infected again…

If testing could be expanded with confidence, then a lot of people wondering if they are infected can have some piece of mind. And at least be able to count themselves as people who can safely work with others.

Anyway, thanks for the tunes David.
