This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hard to focus on things, I did get a letter from my boss that says drinking hot liquids, especially, helps wash away the virus, among other things, in short, keep drinking things.

Avatar 7:54pm Flash Strap:

honestly i couldn't rave about it enough, a revelation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm chresti:

The only film I've seen in the reggae realm is The Harder They Come.
Avatar 7:56pm Flash Strap:

re: babylon - some great footage of Jah Shaka & his soundsystem live dubbing in dancehall that i can't unsee, incredibly cool, powerful
Avatar 7:57pm Flash Strap:

@chresti: i love Harder they Come & that soundtrack album was the gateway. Still haven't seen Rockers though, oughtta get on that now that I think of it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm listener james from westwood:

Among the genres for which I have no upper dose limit, dub is maybe in the top 3. Dig this set!!
Avatar 7:59pm Flash Strap:

Same here James!
Avatar 8:01pm TDK60:

The Land of Look Behind is an interesting documentary from '82 which includes footage of Marley's funeral. A German cinematographer, it oddly has an electronic score.
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

I've never heard of that, I should check it out. Haven't seen the Lee Perry or King Tubby docs either
Avatar 8:03pm TDK60:

Flash, here:
en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

wow, music by K. Leimer! I really gotta see it now
Avatar 8:05pm Flash Strap:

I think chapter 3 is my favorite Commandments of Dub installment but I'm still getting the lay of the land with Jah Shaka
Avatar 8:06pm TDK60:

Flash, just looked and Leimer has an album of the film music from Look Behind.
Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

I think i've heard it without knowing about the film, actually. it's good, he's really cool
Avatar 8:07pm quinn:

mmmm it's like a warm bath for my skull
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm chresti:

The Cockpit Country, I flew over that with my ex in the early 90s, from Negril to Kingston. From the air it looks like the bottom of a green egg carton.
Avatar 8:08pm Flash Strap:

Hi Quinn! water's warm
Avatar 8:09pm quinn:

been baking bread at home and my best loaf so far is just like hard dough bread from jamaica. so goood
Avatar 8:09pm TDK60:

I recall someone in the beginning of Look Behind says, if you aren't careful you can get real lost out in the Cockpit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm passiflora:

I just added steam to my oven
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm chresti:

That looks like an interesting film, TDK60.
Avatar 8:10pm Flash Strap:

Hi Passiflora!
Avatar 8:11pm Flash Strap:

good time to bake, Quinn. I'm hoping to get some flour tomorrow but things are crazy so who knows

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm WR:

Hello Evan and all. Dub set sounds great. Missed opening set, TWFA. Thank WFMU for the archive.
  8:15pm Quinn:

Good luck, I haven’t been able to find any flour around here. Yeast running low, too. Boy howdy.
Avatar 8:16pm Flash Strap:

Hi WR – TWFA indeed!
Avatar 8:16pm Flash Strap:

thanks Quinn. fingers crossed
  8:16pm ?:

I had to get yeast on eBay. try the river site's Fresh option for flour, and keep checking for delivery windows. I gasped when I saw KAF deep in my cupboard
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm passiflora:

Oops, was signed out
Avatar 8:18pm Flash Strap:

I'm rural enough that I'm hoping the local food lion isn't sold out – but I'll find out tomorrow. doing curbside pickup
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm passiflora:

If you can't find yeast, I'll send you some of my 6 packets
Avatar 8:19pm Flash Strap:

Man Sherwood really goes to the edges, it's such a pleasure to hear him go to work
Avatar 8:19pm TDK60:

Flash, you're in North Carolina? NYC here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm chresti:

Local Food Lion, is a cool name for a grocery store.
Avatar 8:20pm Flash Strap:

Nice. I think I have yeast but the flour stock just picked the perfect time to run out.
Avatar 8:21pm Flash Strap:

@TDK: yep. from NC to NYC, stay safe up there compañero
Avatar 8:22pm Flash Strap:

it's not a good store, unfortunately. we used to have a good budget store (kroger) but the workers unionized so they closed all locations near me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Doug Schulkind:

This program is great for explorers. It's also excellent for those still actively ploring.
Avatar 8:23pm TDK60:

Well it's been strange. Tryin' to be careful. Been a bit edgy in the mental state. // Ha, Doug.
Avatar 8:24pm Flash Strap:

@Duug: i implore you, never stop ploring or you'll implode
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Andrew Waterloo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm chresti:

Great TDK60, beautiful weather today, in the SGV area.
Avatar 8:29pm northguineahills:

King Tubby at the controls!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm WR:

King Tubby ruler supreme of minimalism dub.
Avatar 8:31pm TDK60:

I saw the Twinkle Bros. once but can't recall much, probably pretty good.
Avatar 8:32pm Flash Strap:

@NGH: not positive Tubby actually has anything to do with that LP, other than its being recorded at his studio, though he does have a producer cred. seems like more of a Carl (Fitzie Banton) Nelson joint
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm chresti:

Ha TDK60, I was about to say the same thing, a LOT of shows I don't remember.
Avatar 8:33pm TDK60:

Funny as I've aged, seen so many shows; some I recall very well, others are lost in the stage fog of yore...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm chresti:

I know...never mind, let's skank!
Avatar 8:35pm TDK60:

ha hee! ..
Avatar 8:35pm northguineahills:

THis Mutabaruka is sampled often....
Avatar 8:37pm Flash Strap:

this trinity is one of my favorite recordings, ever. incredible fun, wild Joe Gibbs production
Avatar 8:38pm Flash Strap:

& contains my favorite Soul Makossa quotation in music, of which there are so many contenders
Avatar 8:39pm northguineahills:

Trinity is one of my fave deejays... (see his work w/ Yabby You).
Avatar 8:39pm Flash Strap:

RIP Manu Dibango
Avatar 8:39pm TDK60:

oh yeh, Manu Dibango just passed.
Avatar 8:39pm Flash Strap:

Trinity is so good NGH
Avatar 8:41pm TDK60:

I saw David Dichelle did a Manu D. set on Tue. Haven't been able to listen to it yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm doctorjazz:

Had to run for a bit, back for the end of that set, very nice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm chresti:

Joe Gibbs is one I've seen a few times, I remember that he was good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm chresti:

Another show I've completely blanked on is Earl Zero.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm chresti:

Wow exotic harmonica.
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

Welcome back Doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm doctorjazz:

I lost my harmonica, Albert!
Avatar 8:53pm Flash Strap:

@chresti: yeah this is sort of a singular record. beautiful cover: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 8:55pm Flash Strap:

this record is so special, I wish I had an actual copy
Avatar 8:55pm Little Danny:

Man I love this Islanders LP
Avatar 8:55pm Little Danny:

Pittsburgh-area combo! Hella landlocked.
Avatar 8:55pm Flash Strap:

so good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm doctorjazz:

Cool record (you've brainwashed me, Flash)
Avatar 9:00pm Flash Strap:

very good Doc
Avatar 9:01pm Flash Strap:

some great stuff on Shango! particularly Voodoo Moon which I have to stop myself from playing on here every time I think of it
Avatar 9:02pm Little Danny:

Love that version "Voodoo Moon," too. I think I've played it around Halloween before.
Avatar 9:03pm Flash Strap:

this can also be found on Technicolor Paradise: Rhum Rhapsodies & Other Exotic Delights from Numero group, compiled & researched by our own great Little Danny
Avatar 9:04pm Flash Strap:

@LD: one of my faves, I use it at a crucial point in my live shows (alongside sped up surfing footage) and I always marvel at its ability to excite and rally the senses
Avatar 9:05pm Little Danny:

Awesome.
Avatar 9:08pm Flash Strap:

That Polynesian Paradise LP is another marvel I hope to snag one day but have never seen in the wild
Avatar 9:10pm Little Danny:

It's gotten more reliably "affordable" online
Avatar 9:10pm Little Danny:

Like $15-20 with a bit of patience
Avatar 9:11pm Flash Strap:

need to remember to be vigilant because I, uh, "need" it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm chresti:

I have many matters to attend to at home, but I feel like I'm suspended in some kind of gel, like hand sanitizer, @TDK, @8:25
Avatar 9:14pm Little Danny:

It crosses my path occasionally during my eBay foraging, I'll send you a link next time
Avatar 9:15pm Flash Strap:

grazi, LD
Avatar 9:15pm Little Danny:

Don't go home, Chresti, stay by your computer!
Avatar 9:20pm Little Danny:

Have you ever dipped into Tom Recchion's music, Flash?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm chresti:

I am at home, LD
Avatar 9:21pm Flash Strap:

@LD: no, should I?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm chresti:

I love Chaotica!
Avatar 9:21pm Little Danny:

Yes! I'll pluck some out to begin my show.
Avatar 9:21pm TDK60:

Chresti, I've had to check my temper, bad moods, by breathing slowly, trying to be mellow, use humor.
Avatar 9:22pm Flash Strap:

looking forward!
Avatar 9:23pm TDK60:

I bet others have realized that the Drummer corridor here is better able to continue along more normally than the main WFMU schedule.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Doug Schulkind:

Wait, whut?! Little Danny birthed Technicolor Paradise?!
Avatar 9:23pm Little Danny:

Haha, yes, hi Doug!
Avatar 9:23pm Flash Strap:

@Doug: I know, he kept it real quiet
Avatar 9:25pm northguineahills:

washing machine had been out for 6 weeks, my roommate kicked it today, and it worked again. These old clunkers are far superior then the "smart" washer and dryers my siblings have. I've been doing laundry non-stop since 5pm (each load takes 20 mins).
Avatar 9:26pm northguineahills:

Oh, and Phil Moore is new to me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm chresti:

Same here, TDK, deep breaths, if you can hold one for ten seconds, maybe one row your boat, etc, without coughing, you're okay.
Avatar 9:26pm Flash Strap:

Robert Barry's percussion on this album is just so perfect. dig the drums on Nubia (next up)
Avatar 9:26pm Little Danny:

@chresti: I believe you know Tom Recchion, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm chresti:

Haha ngh.
Avatar 9:27pm coelacanth∅:

TDK yes and it's funny to so often see the inadvertent declaration of lack of exploration when someone asks on one of the alternate streams if it's prerecorded or an archive.
Avatar 9:27pm TDK60:

Oh yeh Flash, this is a Top cut. Just the sound of the drums, everything really.
Avatar 9:27pm Flash Strap:

@NGH: happy to arrange the introduction. both those albums are pretty special
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm chresti:

Yes! @Little Danny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm JtotheK:

aloha Flash, aloha explorers!
Avatar 9:29pm Flash Strap:

@TDK (9:23) - yes we are in some ways and very proud to be in this incredible gang at this eschatological moment of breakdown
Avatar 9:29pm TDK60:

Yeh Coel; I woulda thought WFMU listeners would be more brave. But, it was only maybe a year or so back I started really checking out Drummer. And still am just occasionally checking out Ichiban and Sheena.
Avatar 9:30pm Flash Strap:

Hi JtotheK!
Avatar 9:30pm coelacanth∅:

ngh i tried posting a damning review of my sister's "smart" clothes washer on the lowes (?...a few years ago) but they wouldn't post it.
it was entitled "a computer to wash clothes?"
Avatar 9:31pm Flash Strap:

I still need to dig in to Sheena and see what's going on there, it's right up my alley obviously
Avatar 9:31pm Franco Twinkie:

Danny, I know Tom, but I will save the stories for later. I'm making dinner right now.
Avatar 9:33pm Flash Strap:

was passively listening to this the other day and it reached out and grabbed me and I had one of those drop-to-the-floor and just gape at the glory moments
Avatar 9:34pm northguineahills:

two years ago, when I was on the way to Miami from Gainesville for a noise festival, I stopped at my brother's place to do two loads of laundry. First one took an hour, the second one took over an hour, and I was going to miss my friend's band, so I opened the lid and it broke. I didn't even bother to dry them (cracked the windows to w/ them draped over the seats worked).
Avatar 9:35pm northguineahills:

(the lid didn't break, the whole washer did, and it took $200 to fix).
Avatar 9:35pm Flash Strap:

i have never had a washer about which i could form any opinion except that they have all been too loud
Avatar 9:37pm TDK60:

I live in an apt. building with a laundry in the basement, been nervous to go down there. Been doing hand laundry in a bucket but small items. When it comes to pants, sheets, etc. gonna have to go. Take a paper towel sprayed with alcohol to touch the knobs, etc.
Avatar 9:37pm coelacanth∅:

TDK yeah it's not like i'm always on top of everything. and i'm not insulting the folks i mention, but you probably know that.
- they're here now, after all!
Avatar 9:37pm Flash Strap:

wise. be safer than safe TDK
  9:39pm iArthurA:

Only came in on the third hour but damn can't wait to listen to the beginning hope you're maintaining Flash Strap and fellow Explorers (gah this Sabu track is life-giving)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm doctorjazz:

Really Like Nadenga!
Avatar 9:40pm Flash Strap:

Hi Arthur!
Avatar 9:41pm Flash Strap:

All Sabu's "exotica" records are next-level good, god-tier
Avatar 9:41pm TDK60:

It's just that there's so much in WFMU to choose: the main schedule, the alternates, the archives. There's a lot to delve into.
Avatar 9:41pm JakeGould:

Hey all! I’m on the Drummer Stream more because I finally (before all of this Coronavirus stuff) sick of my radio reception issues. So I am now streaming with Bluetooth. So no FM for me but more variety.

If you can't wash clothes, hang/lay them in the sun. Is the recommendation I read somewhere.
Avatar 9:45pm Flash Strap:

when i lived in mexico that's all we ever did, but the sun was better there

my sister's "smart" washer (ge profile) always sucked; always took forever; never washed clothes clean...then it had to be moved up 2 steps, 8 feet total distance. it got even worse -wasting a ridiculous amount of time doing pointless things that i'm sure are programmed in just to dazzle the easily dazzled -like spinning really slowly for 3-4 minutes, then the other way, then doing nothing for several minutes, then gently rocking back & forth repeatedly.
it's probably a huge joke within the industry!

then it broke entirely before it was 8 years old and my sister said that's pretty good it lasted that long.
what the hell is wrong with people?

Someone please remind me to breathe.

breathe Doug, but don't forget to look both ways before you inhale

@JakeGould
Our motto on the Drummer Stream is "Bluetooth with a blowtorch." No it isn't.

Very surprised I'm not familiar before now with Louis "Sabu" Martinez. Maybe some of my mentors skipped past him focusing just on Chano Pozo and later Cubans, but this recording is very interesting for its time.
Avatar 9:50pm coelacanth∅:

is that like "stupid with a flare gun"?
Avatar 9:50pm Flash Strap:

@Doug: i recently picked up a copy of Jo Jones Trio on Everest, recorded by Raymond Scott, and have been thinking of you as I listen
Avatar 9:51pm Flash Strap:

@WR: Sabu did a great great album on Blue Note, Palo Congo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm doctorjazz:

That Sabu kept building and building, just amazing!
And TRANE!

@Doug: Ha! Seriously, I was struggling with deciding whether to stream Bluetooth with a dongle and such. Bugt then I found a really cheap — yet good sounding — JBL portable speaker. On it’s own it’s fine. But the second I put it in a vintage wood box the sound is great. And the speaker is pretty much pocket sized.

Anyway, I am looking forward to taking a long walk through Brooklyn tomorrow. Been a few days (week?) since I left any hovel in Bay Ridge.

Flash Strap! I thought this project had been abandoned because I always listened to your playlists via your blogspot site, only to find I have almost a years worth of playlists to listen to! So happy, but why did you stop posting on the blogspot, out of curiousity? lots of love from Madrid!
