Since we can't do proper movie listings, it's worth noting that some distributors are partnering with local independent theaters for digital rentals-- if you rent it through your theater's site during its "run," a portion of the fee will go to support the theater (which they *really* need right now). One of the films going this route is Bacurau, which is EXCELLENT and I highly recommend-- check it out to see if your local theater's on there! www.kinolorber.com...

@morphe. I take it back, nobody should read Ballard right now. @ battleaxe:
I posted this on FB, yesterday, but since it's come up here, I thought I'd add it for anyone interested... hope it's helpful...

Since we all have a lot of time on our hands now, (well, except for the amazing nurses that are working their butts off!) we are all trying to stay busy at home and keep ourselves from getting too depressed about, well., IT... for those looking to watch some interesting serial type shows, I've made a list of 10 cable TV programs I quite enjoyed in the past 2 decades. In a lot of ways, TV has replaced cinema in the past 2 decades for interesting, engaging, dramatic and innovative narrative creations. You might want to check some of these out. Of course, if you don't do TV, then just ignore this… also, some of these may require particular services (IE. Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, etc.overseas pals — you’re on your own!) so, in no particular order:
Mad Men. Excellent cultural and subtle socio-political take from the perspective of sixties advertising executives and their immediate families. Really well done: fantastic art direction, wardrobe, acting, music, etc.
Fargo. Each season has a different story line, but in some way staying faithful to the vibe of the original movie. So far, they have all been quite good, with lots of dark humor like the original.
The Sopranos. What can I say that hasn't already been said about this show? It completely changed the way series programs were approached and changed TV forever. a stone classic.
The Wire. Another amazing series. to watch it is to see and understand how so many layers of certain aspects of our culture have been completely undermined and how the poorest among us suffer because of it. It shows two sides of a social and political struggle around the issues of illegal drugs, police enforcement and the criminals who stay a step ahead more often than not.. but the consequences, greed, corruption and brutal violence are in constant play. Really well executed from start to finish.
Breaking Bad. Yet another game changer of a series. This one is intense and violent, but shows the disintegration of someone who initially starts out with vital and genuine needs, and slowly progresses to a level of pure, voracious need for power and control. It’s slowly watching someone you thought of as decent, become corrupted and disintegrate before your eyes, one episode at a time.
Six Feet Under. An early series that showed that TV could actually portray a level of humanity without being insipid or simple minded.
Gamorrah. this is an Italian production with subtitles. It's based on the book that was the source of the film with the same title. This is another violent and unrelenting grim series about mafiosi in Naples (the Gamorrah). I recommend the first 2 seasons especially. If you can handle unrelentingly brutal violence, deceit, back-stabbing betrayal, familial fighting and murder, then this may be for you. It’s almost akin to Greek tragedy, with maybe a bit of Grande Guignol thrown in for the hell of it, in the way it deals with familial and social betrayal and disintegration.
The Amerikans. Excellent espionage thriller based around Soviet agents living as “average” Americans in the 1970s and doing very dangerous things. Meanwhile, they are raising a family with 2 kids growing up in the U.S. without really knowing that anything is different… until they do, and things slowly begin to unravel. It is an interesting take on the psychological and very real impact on people doing difficult and dangerous work while trying to hide and pretend they are something else…
The Handmaid's Tale. Really well done series based on the the book by Margaret Atwood. It’s set in a post-cataclysmic “America” in a sort of alternate present. Here, women have lost the ability to become pregnant, while the ones who can have been sequestered and forced into a life of unwanted procreation under questionable and extreme conditions. Sublimely well crafted and acted, this is a totally engrossing portrayal of power versus need, of corruption versus perseverance, and of cruelty verses compassion.
Twin Peaks: The Return. Of all these programs, this one is by far one of the most surreal and challenging — something that we’ve come to expect from David Lynch. And for me, it does not disappoint. It is definitely puzzling, abstract, thrilling, moments of pure cinematic beauty and then moments of sheer brutality. Easily one of the greatest things to come out of television since its birth. With a bold nod to the fact that this was done in the mold of a soap opera, it delivers that level of saccharine jolt as well, but then turns on a dime and slips you off into the 8th dimension to ruminate on your very sanity and existence. It is a stroke of genius, but it also isn’t for everyone… that said, I highly recommend it.

A few runners up:
Deadwood
The Knick
Mr. Robot
The Black Mirror
Killing Eve
Mr. In between
The Man in the High Castle
True Detective (first season only)
Better Call Saul
The Office (both US and UK versions)
Dexter

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Fabio, there is a really wonderful track on this archived show that begins around the 40:52 mark or so and carries on until the ensuing mic break. It's ID'd as "shivering mound" by Nocturnal Emissions but we looked it up on their Bandcamp and found an entirely different track, much shorter of that name. Same title, same album, also as you ID'd. Any chance this was mis-ID'd? And if so, can you say what this track is? Quite good. Thanks, as ever!

Track name is "pent," as far as I can surmise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm p20:

I see you were talking about Gérard Depardieu earlier. I just watched "The Return of Martin Guerre", that was great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm p20:

(I already made a book list. I'm not making a movie list too!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm brainiac:

mmm, garmonbozia youtu.be...
  5:31pm Earth Walker:

Fabio can you do a play list ?
Avatar 5:31pm northguineahills:

@earthwalker: click on the "here" link, and see how much time has passed since Fabio's show usually starts and when you hear the track, you should be in the neighborhood of which band (each track in the archive shows how much time has elapsed since the beginning of the show.
  5:31pm William Main:

@ p20: Never got around to seeing "The Return of Martin Guerre." Now is a good time to check it out.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm p20:

@William Main: Somebody suggested that movie to me several decades ago. I wish I could remember who it was, so I could thank them!
  5:33pm Earth Walker:

Opps. This is all prerecorded ?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm p20:

This is from the era when Clay followed Fabio. I wonder if there will be a transition moment?
Avatar 5:35pm coelacanth∅:

everybody tune in tomorrow morning and DEMAND Gary Wilson.
...demand Marty McSorley for that matter.
  5:37pm allanToronto:

Clay used to do The Dusty Show out on the street didn't he, conducting interviews with people on the fly? There are pieces of it on you tube.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm p20:

@allanToronto: Yes, it was a great show... I was a fan. It was a perfect set up for Hearty White too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm p20:

@allanToronto: I really miss the Dusty Show, actually. I love the new Wake and Bake, but we lost something when we gained that.
Avatar 5:38pm coelacanth∅:

sometimes he did skits with characters, prerecorded.
i miss the dusty show as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm p20:

Clay used to call it the 'TNP' - "Thursday Night Package". Clay, Hearty and Sinner's Crossroads
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm brainiac:

I liked his Saturday show when he gave dramatic readings of his stories.
  5:41pm P-90:

When Clay moved on to Wake I thought he might incorporate some bits of man-on-the-street interviews into the new show. But it makes sense that he doesn’t have time to do the 3 hour show in the morning and also hang around Washington Sq. Park talking to enough people to pick up a few choice tidbits.
  5:42pm allanToronto:

Hmmm. Interesting. My contact with WFMU has been very intermittent over the last two decades, but I have been increasingly drawn into it more and more over the last year...I suppose it's because I was fortunate to have contact w similar things locally, things that have dried up a lot over time. Guess I belong here now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm p20:

My weekend really starts when I hear "Mr. Giant Man"!!! I mean, I still have to work Friday, but... that's the moment when I am psychologically "done" with the work week. I have a staff meeting every Thursday afternoon, and if that doesn't go overtime, I tune in to WFMU just in time for Giant Man. Brings a smile to my face every week! Thanks Fabio!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm p20:

@allanToronto: Gabba gabba, we accept you.
  5:44pm Earth Walker:

@Earth Walker: I grew up in New Jersey (near WFMU) and I listened to the radio a lot when I was a kid. I remember scanning up and down and finding this station.... I was hooked. Had to hide it from my parents though. They were Christians, and I was listening to the Church of the Subgenius and Alan Watts and other "sacrelige"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm Cmurtha:

huh its funny, I assocaite that 1 2 3 with Tony's show much I thought he was filling in when I turned this on just now
  5:50pm Loden:

Ab fab show, Fab. Grazie!!!
  5:50pm Earth Walker:

  5:51pm allanToronto:

Hah! I was thinking about the Church of the Sub-Genius earlier, when everyone was discussing slacks on Pseu's show. I thought,"Huh, I need to work on my slack..."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm p20:

allanToronto: The Subgenius cult was a big influence on me at a formative age. Maybe my parents were right to try to keep me away from it! (It's the reason for my former "YETI BOB" persona)
  5:52pm Earth Walker:

Thanks North !
  5:53pm allanToronto:

I have my copy of Revelation X: The Bob Apocryphon right here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm brainiac:

Don't forget to put one of the new cover sheets on your TPS report, Carm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm p20:

(((then YETI coolers came along, and I decided YETI in all caps was no longer cool. And then I discovered this wonderful polyhedral pizza, which truly represents two of my dearest obsessions in life: mathematics and pizza!)))
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm mariano:

Ooh, and uh, also, Carm... I'm gonna have to ask you to go ahead and come in on Sunday too, mmmmkay?
  5:55pm William Main:

What is this current track?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm p20:

@William Main: good Q. Playlist ends with Tommy James & the Shondells but this ain't that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Cmurtha:

oh p20 you're yeti bob! Now I know. That explains a bit. You get so used to ID'ing people by name or icon.
  5:57pm allanToronto:

Identifying the types of Normals, A Scientific Taxonomy...ha ha ha ha. There used to be a midnite til 2-ish sort of show on CKLN 88.1 out of Ryerson University here back in the 80s, that was run as a sort of local chapter of Bob Dobbs 'church'. It was hilarious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm mariano:

Wow Ken, that is an hour of Clay, awesome! On Prime for free too...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm ultradamno:

So, Tolerance?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm p20:

yup. i see myself on fabio's old playlist commenting as YETI BOB. But the avatar is my new one, not the old yeti pic (you can see on my user page)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm ultradamno:

Does any one have a Curly Neal tribute planned?
  5:58pm William Main:

Sounds like something from Sun Ra Art Forms from a Different Tomorrow, but I don't think it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm mariano:

Thanks Fabio and FMU crew who are making it possible for the music to keep playing, everyone take care and stay safe!
