There's a spider in my downstairs bathroom, smaller than the head of a match. Tiny. There always seems to be one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm Sam Segal:

Got a name for that there spider, ParUbi?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm ParUbi:

That's a good idea. Not yet. Whatever she eats must be even smaller than her.
Avatar 10:17pm WR:

Those first 3 songs put me on edge, Alex Zhang Hungtai & Tseng Kuo Hung are mellowing me out.
  10:17pm ?:

An unwarranted act of real-world aggression was commented by myself on this platform 2 weeks ago.

This situation was dealt with and I sought the help I needed. Sorry for any anxiety or pressure it caused.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm ParUbi:

This track is *beautiful*

Glad to hear it, WR. We'll be keeping the vibe somewhat mellower for a spell here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm Sam Segal:

Glad to have you back, ?! That isn't a question, by the way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm coelacanth∅:

she's going to have to think of creative ways to pay her rent, being so small.
Avatar 10:19pm WR:

Nice choice for playlist page photo. Reminds me of my youth in semi-rural west Texas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm ParUbi:

I think I remember that, ?, and I'm glad you found help. Happy you're here.
Avatar 10:20pm TDK60:

I'm going to have to think of creative ways of paying rent too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm coelacanth∅:

it's okay ?, i hope you're okay.
  10:21pm Chris Farrell:

Wild horses seem to roam away. So I sought the comfort of the common peregrine falcon.

But as the 7 drunken nights work I was forced to abandon my peregrine falcon due to the nature of humans and falcons stark contrast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm chresti:

Is there a moratorium on evictions in NY? TDK60
Avatar 10:21pm TDK60:

I already told WFMU that my yearly donation is definitely going to be late.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm coelacanth∅:

(you should make a profile though, or sign into it...so posts like that don't seem like trolling. just my opinion though.)
Avatar 10:22pm TDK60:

Not sure, Chresti..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm Sam Segal:

I believe Cuomo has called a moratorium on evictions in NY, but what he needs to do is freeze rent, which he has been resistant to thus far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Sam Segal:

@WR, here's the photo caption: "Transmission lines near Salton Sea. Hazy sun is caused by smog from district Los Angeles, May 1972."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Sam Segal:

@Chris, you'll get that falcon back someday, I trust.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm ParUbi:

@chresti-- (10:18)-- I think she may be full grown. She's been there for months.
Avatar 10:25pm TDK60:

yeh Sam, a rent freeze is due. Renters I know have been talking about it but in an iffy manner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm coelacanth∅:

she must be eating *some*one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm ParUbi:

Little mites? Dust mites.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm coelacanth∅:

my landlord is very considerate; but he doesn't have much reserve funds. if he doesn't get the rent, he's in trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm coelacanth∅:

gnats...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Sam Segal:

@Coel, I think that's why its pivotal that everyone get a bailout right now. Renters and homeowners.
  10:30pm Carmichael:

Heya Sam and all from the other epicenter, California.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm chresti:

I try to leave spiders be, for that reason, so they catch little biting bugs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm Sam Segal:

Epicenter dwellers represent! Heya, Carmichael.
Avatar 10:32pm TDK60:

My landlord is not small and I have little sympathy for them.
  10:32pm Chris Farrell:

@coel- I agree it was an act of aggression that a solution exist for (and crosses borders into lives unknown to the person experiencing the crisis). Luckily, I was up playing my bagpipes and re assembled the situation.

Along with current chat: there was gnarly case of dust in my old establishment it was never dealt with until I moved out, now I have the occasional flutter of dust almost reminiscently reminding me of the dangers of preemptive nostalgia.
  10:33pm JakeGould:

First, hello Sam!

And as far as rent goes, I think people in cut-throat cities need to be very careful. One tactic that scummy landlords in gentrifying neighborhoods use is to let people be behind in rent for a few months. Renters feel good, but legally the landlord then has the right to say, “Owes back rent… Kick them to the curb…” It happens a lot more in retail, but it happens.

I think everyone needs a genuine bailout now. And $1,200 that will be taxed (!!!) is really pathetic. I mean the money will help. But still…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm chresti:

That's not a welcome thought, earthquakes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm ParUbi:

I was terrified of spiders as a kid, but a flip got switched somewhere along the line. Now I'm a big fan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm Sam Segal:

Certainly wouldn't put that kind of behavior past my landlord, Jake. That's good advice. I also think people need to start forming tenants unions as soon as possible so that we have the kind of support networks that make it possible to safely and credibly threaten rent strikes.
  10:37pm Carmichael:

Earthquakes. ‘Nuff said.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm coelacanth∅:

gardening and working outside and in basements etc will change one's tolerance of spiders. but even when i was fairly scared of them i'd make myself save and relocate them.
Avatar 10:39pm WR:

G'night all. Falling asleep here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm Sam Segal:

Night, WR!
  10:39pm Carmichael:

Just now looking at the set list. Thanks for the Left Banke, one of my go to’s.
Avatar 10:41pm WR:

PS: thank you Sam for the great tracks. Totally chilled me out after long hectic day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm chresti:

At work, there's black widows to watch out for, around the toilets and stuff.

Night WR.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm Sam Segal:

That's what I'm here for, WR!
  10:42pm JakeGould:

In general I think people should just support each other even as little as morally nowadays. Don’t have an explicit plan but just be ready to help.

My last landlord was very well connected to the local community board and despite being in the place for 12+ years and actually doing light maintenance around the building when they wouldn’t — and always paying rent on time — they treated me like crap when I broke the lease. The thing is they jacked up the rent for the same place by like 40% after I left and knew they would find someone. So they were nasty and mean to just be that way. Ultimate scum. Never trust NYC landlords.

My current place is truly rent stabilized and the owners and super is tons better. Neighbors nicer too. But still: Know your rights.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm coelacanth∅:

Chris, i never considered it an act of aggression. those are the person's words. i just thought it was likely trolling. not a regular wfmu person; maybe one of the (few) people who come on using a variety of names, looking for attention or just to ruin others' good time, out of jealousy.
if the person had shown a profile or even a name i probably would've lost a lot of sleep over it.
because then it's family.

...and maybe it is family.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Sam Segal:

Glad you ended up finding a better place, Jake. My unit used to be rent stabilized, but the landlord figured out some loop hole to take it out of stabilization before I moved in. Been in the place for 2.5 years now, and they've only raised the rent $50 since I moved in, but when the next lease starts in August they're jacking it up another $100. Could be worse though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm coelacanth∅:

.in any case i realise it was a real call for help and i hope the person stays strong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Sam Segal:

You are truly one of the greats, Coel. Same to you, Chris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm coelacanth∅:

gnight WR
Avatar 10:48pm TDK60:

Some folks have lost jobs while others still work, some at home; so, split economic situations. But it may get worse overall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm chresti:

Family of the Greats
  10:50pm Carmichael:

Hate to say it, but in 30 days some people will be SOL financially.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm coelacanth∅:

my only way to pay the next rent is to not pay the taxes i owe. then i will remain without health insurance and should expect no "stimulus" help.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm ParUbi:

I hope just financially
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm doctorjazz:

Hi, late to the party, here for a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm ParUbi:

Though not even that, of course
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm coelacanth∅:

greetings doctor
Avatar 10:54pm TDK60:

ok, going for a short night walk, back soon...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm ParUbi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm chresti:

Have a good walk, wear the monster mask, TDK60
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm Sam Segal:

Doc! You always know when the jazz is near.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm chresti:

Yer already doing your part by being here/there , providing musical comfort and company, Sam.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm doctorjazz:

Got a 6th sense.
  11:04pm Chris Farrell:

In times of turmoil don’t turn to the tinfoil has been a helping phrase to me.

My picture of Alan Watts reminds me this is all one big magical accident.

Quick story: I used to have posters all over my wall in my room at the house I grew up in. Some of greats at the time, jay and silent bob Grateful Dead sublime etc.

After years of disobeying my parents and chasing something that wasn’t meant to be, I came home to a room with no posters on the walls. Just white walls and no door. Sort of a sign I needed to change.

I had been wanting to share pre-COVID. And also ask if anyone has any thoughts about the flaming lips trajectory as a band?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm doctorjazz:

You tell em, Pharoah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm ParUbi:

The Big White Wall has many lessons
  11:08pm Chris Farrell:

@coel- fake-language responses, Ha! That is up there with your Truman Show comment. Which I’ve labeled my gold standard.
Avatar 11:09pm Franco Twinkie:

Chris, Your parents didn't like your taste in wall art or was that just an aspect of something more troubling?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm coelacanth∅:

Chris Thanks -i don't remember the truman show comment at all though! (although i can guess)
and chresti deserves the credit for the made-up fake language idea
  11:14pm Chris Farrell:

I think it was a message that “my wall art” was more so me putting stuff on their walls. A symbol that I can’t go and act and do whatever I want without repercussions.

I briefly had an atlas up after that and have now just grown to embrace the white walls as a blank canvas.

Needless to say when and if I get my own place there will not be a single white wall in the house.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm chresti:

Did they save them?
  11:16pm Chris Farrell:

No not to my knowledge. They could be buried somewhere! Knowing my mom she loves a good hometown mystery.
Avatar 11:18pm Franco Twinkie:

Okay, I guess it was a territorial and control issue. That is to bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm coelacanth∅:

i had a highly adorned bedroom as a teenager. ever-increasing and shifting things to see for the amusement of my visitors. now it follows my compositional inclinations. a few photographs i took, a few paintings by someone i know. refrigerator magnets, a monkey hanging from the ceiling...
Avatar 11:32pm TDK60:

Back from a walk. A few bodegas open, pizza delivery bicyclists; one encounter with a smart phone zombie who got too close. A few walkers but Washington Hts. mainly empty, quiet, eerie, spacious.
  11:34pm Chris Farrell:

Yeah, looking back I like to think of it as a good form of downsizing and preparation. The atlas (for the time it was up) served me very well, I would spend minutes at a time getting a feel for the lay of land.

My failure to launch has provided me with all the amenities and Absences that I would have expected.
Avatar 11:36pm TDK60:

my patience for smart phone zombies is wafer thin these days..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm Sam Segal:

Thanks for the report from outside the wire, TDK. The bodegas in my neighborhood are all open as well. It has certainly been more quiet recently, but there are still a lot of people gathering in the park and hanging out on stoops. I imagine the streets are pretty dead at this hour though.
Avatar 11:38pm TDK60:

Sam, much more dead than usual, even for a Wed. at Eleven pm.
  11:38pm Chris Farrell:

Are smart phone zombies people on phones when they walk?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm chresti:

Maybe have a large flag to wave and blinking lights to ward off phone zombies.
  11:40pm Chris Farrell:

Music has been spot on for me tonight. A great set. I missed last week due to lack of being outside and working, days started to blend together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm Sam Segal:

Same here on the days starting to blend together, Chris. Glad you're enjoying the sounds.
  11:41pm Carmichael:

I gotta dip, as I got slaughtered at work before I even got there. Later gators.
Avatar 11:41pm TDK60:

Chris F. Yes, they are people who look at their gizmos while walking, who appear to be on a trajectory for yourself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm chresti:

Later Carmichael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm coelacanth∅:

i used to have a large map in my bathroom in my last apartment. one side was "the political world" and the side i faced out was "the real world" -from when national geographic stuck maps in the magazines now and then.
i'd spend lots of time just standing there, studying.
it also had statistics about flora, fault lines, wind currents etc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm Sam Segal:

Be well, Carmichael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm coelacanth∅:

TDK i too, about the phone zombies

'night Carm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm coelacanth∅:

i have just stopped to wait for the phone zombie to crash into me more than once.
i guess i wont be pulling that stunt for a while.
  11:48pm Chris Farrell:

Thanks for the heads up TDK, any bits of social cues I can pick up on before going to a big city will be very helpful.

Don’t really use my phone much but I have an unhealthy habit of taking it out to feel “busy important” to use my own term to describe how I see my generation (millennial/Gen Z)

@coel- that sounds like my kind of studying. I used to have different methods of looking at the map.
  11:50pm Chris Farrell:

Boxer- the horse from animal farm. Got it before I had to ask the dot com
Avatar 11:51pm TDK60:

I had a flashlight with me, should've used it to alert them..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm chresti:

Haha coel, they bump into you, go tsk, and walk away?
Avatar 11:52pm Franco Twinkie:

As a teenager I was single minded in my need to obliterate blank wall space. Many years have passed. In our house today, each room is a different color. With the exception of a calendar from a Mexican supermarket in the laundry room, there are no pictures on the walls...they are all on the floor.
Avatar 11:52pm TDK60:

This John Luther Adams is good, soothing at the end of a bleh day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm coelacanth∅:

if we collide they usually say i'm sorry then keep on; more often they see me at the very last second, stop, walk around me without saying anything.
Avatar 11:55pm TDK60:

Thanks Sam. Ridin' back out to the ranch; till then...

Franco i never had a concept for my room, as a teen, but i collected more and more interesting (at least whilst tripping or whatever) things that i needed to find space for.
