If your library (or college or universty) has Kanopy, you can get a lot of excellent movies and educational films for free. Unfortunately, I don't think the NYPL or Brooklyn Public Library still have them, but maybe there's one near you.
  11:43am allanToronto:

both The Association and The Lettermen seem Satanic to me for reasons intangible, ha ha
Swag For Life Member 11:44am Eddy in Australia:

@Frank Zaatar I second Kanopy - a lot of great docs.
Avatar 11:44am Michael Shelley:

KANOPY is great - but the turnover is slow... same movies for a LONG time

  11:51am Daybreak!!!:

Sorry @Michael Shelley, but what were you asking when you wrote:
“How safe, in terms of human interaction these days, is not safe enough/too safe? “
What are you asking about?
If people are over doing it?
Or just sneezing into the air with no attempt to cover?
Avatar 11:52am zivilars:

Thanks for your show, Michael – haven't followed the chat until now, first time in my lifetime I'm really worried out how my and other people's future will look TBH, but your sets are brilliant as always ... hope everybody has enough great movies to stream at home at the moment ... I'm surely experiencing a lot slower Internet at the moment, too, but that should be the least of our problems ... Best from Germany, stay safe everybody!
  11:53am John from Florham park:

@Daybreak how are you doing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Frank In Queens:

Hmmmm, aside from the vocalist sounding a bit like Mickey, I don't think this sounds at all like The Monkees musically.

In Boonton, NJ which while not a “Hot Spot” I have a Walmart just down the hill (less than a quarter mile away) and that is where I saw the great spread of reactions last night when we swung into and grabbed a DVD from the touch screen Red Box on our way to walking to pick up a pizza that we ordered.
Some people were wearing disposable gloves, others were wearing pretty obviously not N95 rated masks. Some older Walmart workers were wearing no obvious protection.
I used hand sanitizer after the touch screen and the kids washed their hand in the new lengthy fashion.

Here in Brooklyn, I have every intention of limiting my time outside my apartment door to only a few minutes total over the next two weeks (dump the trash, pick up mail, that's it). Not trusting our neighbors to be doing the safe thing. And we're taking extra caution because my fiancé has a pre-existing health condition, making her more vulnerable than some.

@John from FP:
Understandable to be freaked. These are probably some of the weirdest times any of us have gone through since 9/11
And even that was terrifying in a very different way.
This is more of a slow burn that is full of questions. What will happen next? How long will this last? Am I at risk? Am I taking unnecessary risks? Am I putting others at risk?

My big Takeaway is from the schooling perspective.
None of this is normal.
We should not pretend that any of this is normal.
We should definitely not pretend like the students we teach are stupid and unobservant.
One of the big things my fourth grader was worried about was:
what are all of the people who work for closed businesses or who own closed businesses going to do?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Doobois:

  12:32pm mr. elliot in DC:

That would be great- Kids in the Hall were wonderful - revisiting them 20-25 years after the fact is something to celebrate Michael. Their comedy was never sophomoric.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Frank In Queens:

That "The State" has not been released for home viewing completely intact is an absolute travesty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Spinning Giant:

Kids in the Hall were the hottest, hippest, anti-establishment thing when they broke onto the scene up here north of the 49th - it remains a great mystery to this day how they convinced our national broadcaster (CBC) to let them do what they did...
Avatar 12:33pm Michael Shelley:

We've been talking about that too - SO many people will be out of work for a LONG time. In my town there are lots of business that operate on the edge, and surely some will have to close. And so many people live paycheck to paycheck - how will they pay the bills?

The way most of them have been checking in with me is by doing the work that I assigned them.
We are supposed to assign 45 min to 1 hour of total work.
However, I’ve been assigning about a 30 minutes to 45 minutes of actual work because I know that working from home or doing anything online always takes at least 15 to 20 minutes longer than doing it in a live classroom.
Once again, I’m also keeping in mind how crazy my home life is right now and how I have no idea how crazy their lives likely are because THESE ARE NOT NORMAL TIMES.
