Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Little Danny is a smooth operator for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm chresti:

Hi Little Danny and flame family!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Matt from New Orleans:

Hi Danny Does this song imply your accepting requests tonight?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Matt from New Orleans:

Hi everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Phillippe Bastille:

Hey everybodies!
Avatar 10:03pm Little Danny:

WR, chresti, Matt, Phillippe! Hello!

Welcome, friends
Avatar 10:04pm Julien "cabin fever" à Montréal:

Hi Danny! Hi everyone!
Avatar 10:04pm Flash Strap:

Hi LD & all friends!
Avatar 10:04pm Little Danny:

Not tonight Matt, I don't think I could do a requests show if my life depended on it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Matt from New Orleans:

I didn’t think so. I just felt like stirring the pot.
Avatar 10:05pm Little Danny:

Hello Julien!

And great show, Evan.
Avatar 10:06pm Flash Strap:

thanks brother. lovin' this Tony Ashley
Avatar 10:07pm Little Danny:

Pure Memphis soul
Avatar 10:09pm Little Danny:

As is this Quiet Elegance side. Same group & production as all of Al Green's '70s hits
Avatar 10:10pm northguineahills:

Yaye, I made it for LD! Still waiting for my heart (Joe's busy).
Avatar 10:11pm Little Danny:

NGH! Long time! Glad you made it, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Matt from New Orleans:

Does anyone know why the hearts change color?
Avatar 10:13pm Little Danny:

You've probably clicked on someone's profile. Link color changes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm doctorjazz:

Hello Danny and y'all!
Avatar 10:16pm TDK60:

Hello.
Avatar 10:18pm Little Danny:

Doc, TDK. Glad you're here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm Matt from New Orleans:

I have a CD comp of George’s complete Blue Note recordings. He didn’t seem to record as a leader after the 60s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm doctorjazz:

Dig the George Braith!
Avatar 10:18pm coelacanth∅:

hey Danny, cool bleuets
Swag For Life Member 10:18pm zzz:

love these george braith records featuring my man grant green!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm doctorjazz:

Trouble No More, m'thinks...
Avatar 10:19pm Little Danny:

Yeah, Matt. I saw Braith live in the early aughts but his recording career seems to have ended prematurely
Avatar 10:20pm Little Danny:

zzz! Yep! Grant Green all the way, gorgeous solo on the track I just played
Avatar 10:20pm coelacanth∅:

"you don't love me anymore"
Avatar 10:21pm Little Danny:

Nice to see ya Coela! Whoa a rhyme
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm doctorjazz:

Guess The Allmans3 lifted the riff...
Avatar 10:21pm Little Danny:

@coela: Yessir! And before that, "She's Fine She's Mine"
Avatar 10:22pm northguineahills:

Making a beer run while it's still possible. My interview tomorrow is now video (more convenient for me).
Avatar 10:22pm Little Danny:

If you're gonna lift a riff doc there's worse you could do.
Avatar 10:23pm Little Danny:

Rather a bitter lyric, this
Avatar 10:23pm coelacanth∅:

ah, well i had the title wrong too. no "anymore" (at least not on Dawn Penn's version)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm doctorjazz:

And of course, these guys knew "Shake"
Avatar 10:25pm coelacanth∅:

right doc the Allman's version is like part "trouble no more", part "you don't love me"
Avatar 10:26pm coelacanth∅:

(their trouble no more that is)
Avatar 10:26pm Little Danny:

Definitely: "Shake." Cued up this Hank Crawford with seconds to spare. (Speaking of "Shake.")
Swag For Life Member 10:28pm zzz:

groovy tune (shake a plenty)
Avatar 10:28pm coelacanth∅:

jeez i'm a dumbass...the Allmans' trouble no more came like 15 years before Dawn Penn's song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm doctorjazz:

Oooops, Coel, made the same assumption. You know what Felix Unger said about assumptions...(though I prefer that the Allmans were first).
Avatar 10:32pm Franco Twinkie:

Howdy Danny, and assembled folks in their respective hide outs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm JtotheK:

hiya Danny, hi everyone. Arriving 30 mins late and wow, what a set list ... going to have to go back to archives later. (Also: I missed The Inspirations -- augh!!!!!!!!!)
Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Ignore Function:

EXTRA Cool Blue Flame tonight, Little Danny.
Avatar 10:33pm Little Danny:

Franco, my dude. Glad you made it.
Avatar 10:34pm Little Danny:

Jason! There'll be few more northern discs this evening if I time it right
Avatar 10:34pm Little Danny:

Thanks Ignore F, and howdy! Sometimes I go full mood on it
Avatar 10:36pm TDK60:

Nice to hear Yusef Lateef.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm JtotheK:

That Inspirations is a local (well the group is, I think label is Chicago) 45 that I hope to find someday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm doctorjazz:

Are you actually playing a 78?
Avatar 10:36pm coelacanth∅:

dr.j me too... i have the original line-up of the Allman brothers band on a bit of a pedestal i'd rather not shake that
Avatar 10:37pm Little Danny:

@doc: yep!
Avatar 10:37pm Franco Twinkie:

Yeah well. All else is in the junk pile, so I will be hanging with this supreme gang of goofballs till they sound the all clear air horn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm doctorjazz:

With Duane, I assume...saw a cool Documentary on Duane, think on Amazon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm JtotheK:

Also I've mentioned on these boards before - but Discogs has the info on that Inspirations, someone who isn't as shy as me should reach out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm doctorjazz:

My turntable won't play 78s...i also thought you needed a special cartridge.
Avatar 10:41pm coelacanth∅:

yes, with Duane. fuckin' Supernova -and he made the others shine as brightly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm doctorjazz:

(I have to hang around Danny's mailbox, heh, heh, heh)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm JtotheK:

Shake a-Plenty is far more desirable 45 as opposed to Shake a-Bare Minimum.
Avatar 10:42pm coelacanth∅:

(not that brothers and sisters isn't excellent, mostly. i think they were still bathing in his glow)
Avatar 10:43pm Franco Twinkie:

I must share this little bit of surreal comedy: This afternoon driving through the deserted streets of Pasadena, there was this very earnest commentator on KCRW advising folks who don't know, how to score and consume weed in all it's permutations. For coping purposes, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm doctorjazz:

He was amazing, The recordings he did with Aretha and Pickett are also just incredible, his energy just jumps out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm melinda:

greetins
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm melinda:

@Franco haha
Avatar 10:46pm coelacanth∅:

hell yeah doc! my favorite version of the weight and my favorite version of hey jude (respectively)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Matt from New Orleans:

Are weed dispensaries being classified like pharmacies out there?
Avatar 10:46pm coelacanth∅:

Franco i love it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Doug Schulkind:

Hello you big-eared weed-eaters!
Avatar 10:47pm Franco Twinkie:

I don't know, Matt. What was a go yesterday, might be a no today.
Avatar 10:47pm coelacanth∅:

my ears aren't big!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm Matt from New Orleans:

Tony Owens still in strong voice as of a few years ago
Avatar 10:49pm Little Danny:

Le Doug! Melinda!
Avatar 10:49pm Kris Holmes:

Love this Tony Owens. Fantastic show!
Avatar 10:49pm Little Danny:

That's good to hear, Matt, his vocals on this track are absolutely massive
Avatar 10:49pm Little Danny:

K.R.S. Holmes!
Avatar 10:51pm Kris Holmes:

Lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm Matt from New Orleans:

He never gets booked at festivals around the city because he’s probably too obscure. Ira is the only one who hires him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm chresti:

They're recreational dispensaries, but if you have a medical card, you don't pay tax@Matt
Avatar 10:54pm Little Danny:

That Tony Owens is another affordable deepie
Avatar 10:55pm Kris Holmes:

Matt, I agree he sounded fantastic
Avatar 10:55pm Kris Holmes:

Tony Owens didn’t cut a bad record
Avatar 10:56pm Kris Holmes:

There was even one that was so obscure it was only recently discovered in boxes in a storage unit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm chresti:

I don't know if that's comforting, to have a PSA saying "OK folks, this is a good time to get baked"
Avatar 10:58pm TDK60:

chresti, I'll have to puff and ponder on that...
Avatar 10:59pm Little Danny:

I wish I knew Owens's catalog better
Avatar 11:00pm Little Danny:

I like Dave Brubeck.
Avatar 11:02pm Little Danny:

I even still like "Take Five."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm doctorjazz:

Not that easy or affordable, LD, could only find 1 copy inn eBay of the single for $50. Maybe that's inexpensive these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm chresti:

Maybe that's why people are rushing out to stockpile toilet paper, they're really high.

Take Five will always be groovy.
Avatar 11:04pm Little Danny:

Of the Tony Owens? I've seen $10 copies on eBay quite recently. $50 is waaay too much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm Matt from New Orleans:

Dave would have been 100 thus year
Avatar 11:05pm coelacanth∅:

chresti haha
Avatar 11:06pm TDK60:

Is there a run on popping corn? I can't find it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm JtotheK:

I like Dave Brubeck. I like Take Five.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm Matt from New Orleans:

I’m a popcorn fiend TDK so unclear. I buy 5 lb sacks straight from a farmer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm JtotheK:

Danny do you know/have this cover of Take Five? www.discogs.com...
Avatar 11:08pm coelacanth∅:

and i'll listen to take 5 occasionally, and i like that impressions of japan album - however hokey some tracks are
Avatar 11:09pm Little Danny:

@Jason: nope! Can't wait to check it out. Thanks!
Avatar 11:11pm Little Danny:

Noro is the better-known brother to Esy (featured prev. set)
Avatar 11:13pm Kris Holmes:

There’s actually an Island funk version of take five done in 4/4 time
Avatar 11:14pm Little Danny:

Haha, amazing. I can't even imagine how flattened-out a 4/4 version would sound
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm doctorjazz:

I heard the 4/4 Take 5, pretty cool cool. Never loved Brubeck, but really like Paul Desmond, his alto player.
Avatar 11:17pm Kris Holmes:

I want to say it’s on one of the Numero comps, Bahamas or Belize but I’m not certain
Avatar 11:17pm Little Danny:

Dragons = Daryl Dragon = The Captain
Swag For Life Member 11:18pm zzz:

feel like you don’t often hear vibes (or whatever that is) in surfy instrumentals, and is that melodica? cool song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm Doug Schulkind:

The Bahamian Ozzie Hall does a cover of "Take Five."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm Matt from New Orleans:

Good night everyone. Thanks Danny. I’ll be listening.
Avatar 11:20pm Kris Holmes:

That is indeed the version I’m thinking of, Take Four?? youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm doctorjazz:

Gonna lay my head on the pillow as well. Night all!
Avatar 11:22pm Little Danny:

The "Take 5" meter/sound got adopted in all sortsa interesting ways in the early and mid-'60s. Thinking of France Gall's "Pense a Moi"
Avatar 11:23pm Little Danny:

Yeah, zzz, definitely not that much. Mostly in the context of big-budget stuff like the Beach Boys and some surf-era soundtracks
Avatar 11:24pm Franco Twinkie:

In 1972 I saw the Dragon brothers, Daryl and Dennis providing an improvised(I think) sound track to a surfing movie at the Santa Monica Civic. They were very good in a Pink Floyd kind of way. Of course they both went onto their own respective careers. But back then, they really had it together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm Matt from New Orleans:

I recognized this music Danny. It’s from a fairly terrible Mondo style look at satanic rituals called Witchcraft ’70 in the US.
Avatar 11:35pm Little Danny:

Haha, I should have known you knew that movie, Matt. I almost called you out on the air.
Avatar 11:37pm Little Danny:

Franco, I knew there was no way you hadn't crossed paths with Dragons at some point. So very, very California, that family
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm Doug Schulkind:

Catching the last 20 minutes from the sack. Thanks for the superior selecting, LD!
Avatar 11:39pm Hams:

wow, franco. this is something i did not know about captain & tennille. albeit, i have not done much research on the duo. pretty cool you got to see'm.
Avatar 11:39pm Little Danny:

Thanks Doug! Stay awake until the end!
Avatar 11:40pm Franco Twinkie:

If sitting in the audience with all the other pretenders means I crossed paths, okay, I crossed paths.
Avatar 11:41pm Hams:

paths are important.
Avatar 11:41pm Kris Holmes:

There was a third brother right? It was all three in The Dragons?
Avatar 11:41pm Little Danny:

The Dragons were connected to the surf movie The Innermost Limits of Pure Fun, I believe. Matt from NOLA could prolly confirm
Avatar 11:42pm Kris Holmes:

I believe two of the brothers did that soundtrack
Avatar 11:43pm Kris Holmes:

I want to say The Dragons stuff was the only stuff all three of them did together?
Avatar 11:45pm Franco Twinkie:

On that night they were simply called Dragon. One thing I do remember, it was really cold and Dennis was out front playing the drums in a tank top!
Avatar 11:46pm Little Danny:

Could very well be, Kris, I just don't know. I've checked out that soundtrack online before, but I don't know much about them as recording artists
Avatar 11:48pm Kris Holmes:

Yeah I’m going off vague recollections from when I was vaguely interested one time years ago lol
Avatar 11:53pm Little Danny:

Man I have so many vague recollections of esoteric music factoids, they just keep piling up in my head. Thank god I have this show. How else could I exorcise/exercise them?
Avatar 11:55pm Kris Holmes:

Ugh I know, most of the time I’m prefacing anything I say with “maaaaybe?”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm JtotheK:

enjoyed the show, Danny! good evening everyone.
Swag For Life Member 11:58pm zzz:

great show thanks!
Swag For Life Member 11:59pm Ignore Function:

We are all the better for it Kris and Danny.
Avatar 11:59pm Franco Twinkie:

Thanks Danny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm chresti:

Thank you for another fine show, Danny!
