Working from home; haven't heard the Yips on a real radio in ages. Hoping everyone is well; knowing that it's tough times ahead for most.

Thanks, Irene. Welcome to the show, everybody! Easing in with some post-marathon bossa this morning.

  9:15am John from Florham park:

@Mark hurst big thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am zivilars:

I really enjoyed the two marathon weeks (which is a testament to WFMU that they even can make pledge begging extremely entertaining), but I have to admit that I'm also glad that we are back to normal ... (at least when it comes to the radio program)
Avatar 9:17am duke:

Hi Joe, Sambaing (spelling?) my way through the morning

Morning, Joe and Noisers!
Avatar 9:19am waters7:

Thank you for these soothing sounds. Thanks for going into FMU today. Hope you can stay "live" through this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Handy Haversack:

Good move, @Mark Hurst. If you make it back in to the station, I left a book (well, galleys, really) in your mailbox.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe.
  9:20am JakeGould:

@Zivilars: According to Station Manager Kevan, programming at WFMU will be altered as many self-quarantine and such during this Coronavirus period. What that means exactly, I don’t know. But it stems that more fill ins and prerecorded shows will be happening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am zivilars:

@JakeGould: That sucks – hope the consequences for WFMU's broadcasting will stay as minimal as possible ... It's crazy what we are experiencing right now with the virus, who would have thought of these dimensions two or three weeks ago ... :(
  9:23am JakeGould:

“This Coronavirus period…” Wow that sounds weird. I’m not using the word “quarantine” because that implies forced isolation by the government.
  9:24am djsheilab:

I’m finding this opening set so hugely comforting + beautiful. Thank you Joe and good morning to you + everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Ken From Hyde Park:

Good morning, Joe and pals. I trust everyone at the station has been documenting their operating procedures so backup personnel can effectively run the station if the regular staff cannot get to the building. Including care and feeding schedules for the Yips.
Avatar 9:25am TDK60:

My parents were listening to this bossa nova stuff when I was a kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am steveo:

I agree with Sheila, thanks Joe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am zivilars:

by the way, does anybody know who won the time slot on WFMU yesterday in the great finale?? maybe those things were done before in the past, but i found this a VERY cool idea and a regular time slot on WFMU (or one of the others streaming channels) as a "wildcard" for a listener getting a chance to do his own show sound like such a great idea with lots of inspiring potential!
Avatar 9:26am duke:

The station kept going during the aftermath of hurricane Sandy. The FMU folks are tough.
Avatar 9:27am Joe McG:

Hey Sheiila, everybody! Glad you're enjoying the beautiful sounds of Brazil this morning (and beyond)!
  9:27am JakeGould:

@Zivilars: Weird indeed. And remember many DJs have day jobs that have suddenly disappeared or were put on hold. So economics of sudden lack of income for the next 4 weeks come into play. Also NYC public schools will be closed until April 20 and kids don’t take care of themselves! This mess is really a big lesson in economics and how one thing connects to another.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Mark Hurst:

@Handy Haversack thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am TheLoneliestMonk:

HeyHey, JoeMac!
Feelin' the bossa today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Ken From Hyde Park:

It was fun to catch the encore of "Don't Touch Me There" last night, Joe & Sheila. What fun! And a reminder of what not to do during the social distancing era.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am TheLoneliestMonk:

Charlie Byrd was a brilliant six stringer.
Was there a demanding guitar teacher that made you learn Blue Bossa in YOUR past, JM?
  9:30am JakeGould:

@duke: The thing with events like 9-11 and Hurricane Sandy is they are clear events with some kind of idea when things end. This whole Coronavirus mess has no clear end. I mean we can’t even have everyone tested even those with symptoms.
Avatar 9:30am TDK60:

There was that series of bossa nova LPs on Verve Records with similar paintings on the covers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am zivilars:

@JakeGould: I'm sure many people STILL don't have a real idea what this virus thing will mean for their life in the near future, even after this weekend. The damage is done, from the economical point of view. There will come better times again, but for the foreseeable future, I'm am SO afraid when it comes to our jobs and the money in our pockets. (People staying safe is and stays the most important thing, though, of course, whatever needs to be done!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am woj:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Handy Haversack:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Michael:

Perfect set for today Joe. Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Jim the Poet:

Hey Joe, great show
  9:33am JakeGould:

I went into Manhattan and visited the newsstand guy near where I work. He’s worried but resigned to reality: He only sold $6 worth of stuff on Saturday in the middle on Greenwich Village.
  9:33am John from Florham park:

@Handy see you later
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Hughie Considine:

@TLM, my dad was in the Army in 1960, stuck on a base in the midwest and miserable -- one of the only bright spots was when he mail-ordered Charlie Byrd's "Blues for Night People."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am zivilars:

this smoothing killer set so far alone was worth my pledge, Joe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Maggie B.:

I was supposed to see the Wild Irish Roses near New Paltz yesterday, but decided not to take the chance. Joe, hearing them live on your show a few weeks ago really made me love them! How did you fit everybody in one place?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Marley P. Dogg:

Joe - thanks so much for being on this morning
Avatar 9:39am fm Mike:

@Joe, what is the song here in the background? The guitar and the harp are peaceful!
  9:41am John in Bklyn:

Nice being socially distant together. That set was a nice tonic for anxiety.
  9:42am morphe':

Jake..I think Ken said some DJs will do their shows from home - that might mean pre-recorded only - not live? Hopefully some live from home remotes???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Brian in UK:

Doug did a monsterous show via the Stream to keep the station on air.

There is a strange feeling of anti-climax.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am TheLoneliestMonk:

@HC haha, which is worse army life or Midwestern cultural purgatory?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Ken From Hyde Park:

Anyone have a link to a "How To" website for creating home-made toilet paper? Asking for a friend.
Avatar 9:45am Joe McG:

@fm Mike: That's Gene Bianco the harpist. It's from the LP "Harp, Skip, and Jump," I forget which song!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Hughie Considine:

Zackly, @TLM -- why my folks opted to conceive me when they were at their most miserable I'll never understand.
  9:51am Rick A.:

Ennio Morricone is alive and well! He is alive, though quite old, actually. His legacy lives on in Los Bitchos.

Avatar 9:53am Malcolm:

morning joe, great show so far! hello everyone!
Avatar 9:54am Roberto:

I know y'all are disappointed about the current marathon total, but think about it: how many independent enterprises have a following dedicated enough to get it this close in the midst of a pandemic?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Brian in UK:

Anything that Rupert Murdoch publishes is worth wiping your arse on.
  9:55am JakeGould:

@EG_Astro: Any many of those sites provide horrible information. Just wash your hands with soap and water more often than usual.
  9:55am Karen in Sleepy Hollow:

Joe! Thanks for all you do at the station. You being on the air this morning is the normal I needed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am b!!!:

This first hour is wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am TheLoneliestMonk:

@JM maybe it's time for Ken to consider underwriting...and password protecting the highbit streams for pledgers only?
Avatar 9:58am Joe McG:

Happy to hear it, Karen! Thanks for all you do and have done for the station. That goes for all you volunteers out there and listeners. I'll thank some of you later on, but I want to play music and not talk so much.

Pledging - there is a structural flaw in the pledging system and the distribution of thanks... I listen to Joe, Clay and many djs everweek but did not pledge because I use my Mouse to soak Andy (2 x the $$$). I always feel terrible when a DJ I listen to does not meet their goal, but that still seems like a wi$$$$e move for FMU>>>
Thanks Joe and all..$$$$ cannot always express the love felt!!
Avatar 10:17am Malcolm:

all the songs in this set have terrific, escalating culminations

Avatar 10:18am PKNY:

I have this Blood Sweat & Brass record, but I don't remember this version of "Suzy Q" being so fire!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am zivilars:

@morphe: I‘m also unsure how to pledge correctly ... Feels so bad to leave a DJ / show out I like :) Thinking about becoming swag for life next year for $41 a month, but you can only choose 25 shows max online ... Together with Ichiban, Drummer and Sheena's Jungle Room I STILL leave about 3-5 shows out I want to show my dedication to – always become frightened when it comes to the very special interest shows that WFMU needs the "proof" to see that enough people love them :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am zivilars:

But, as Joe just mentioned: If it all goes to the same place, it should be okay, I guess :)

  10:28am Toothgrinder Tom:

@Phillipe good one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Ike:

@ziv, nothing wrong w/that! IMHO the alternate-stream shows and late-night shows are the most neglected. Especially if you like weekend late-night shows like Nowhere Places (one of my faves). Daytime shows on the main stream get a fair amount of love already.

We're having WFH issues today too. Maybe it's time to switch to NYCMesh (if I can).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am zivilars:

@Ike: That's my thinking, too! As much as I love e.g. "Wake", I know that Clay already is popular enough to get enough pledges, so when in doubt and budget, I would give my pledge to some more obscure Drummer / Ichiban / Jungle Room show I love (pledging for Clay, too, though, cause I love him and his energy). But as already pointed out, we probably don't need to make too much of a science of it and I believe that at WFMU, of all station, no great, interesting show was kicked because it raised too less pledges and therefore seems to be too commercially unpopular ... :)
  10:33am Bill W:

"Go onto the YouTube" sounded rather avuncular, Joe.
