Hello forks and Tony! The show link wasn't on the home page

It sounds like the stream is on..

Hey, chresti! Yep, the stream seems to be fine....

Now there's a strange transition! From Jesus to the metal grate

Greetings, Jtothek, Rory, and Melinda!!!
Avatar 🥁 12:06pm Sem:

Greets, Tony, and howdoyoudo to all lithissening in.
Avatar 12:07pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, hiya, Sem!
Avatar 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

So, all of today's cassettes are sort of atypical for Tape Hiss -- oddities and soddities, maybe....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Cmurtha:

This is such an odd song. This vocalist does work, and yet, that makes it work. Love that synth
Avatar 12:10pm Tony Coulter:

Her name is Mary, her legs are hairy....
Avatar 12:11pm Tony Coulter:

Rusty Dan....
Avatar 12:12pm Tony Coulter:

i.e., Rusty Steely Dan....
  12:14pm JakeGould:

Thank you for reminding us all that as bad as you things can get it can always get worse.
Avatar 12:15pm Tony Coulter:

Ha! (Hey, Jake!)
Avatar 12:16pm Listening Out There:

Virusless in Seattle.
Avatar 12:17pm Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, L.O.T.!
  12:21pm JakeGould:

I think this YouTube user is related to this: https://www.youtube.com/user/sysingerr
Avatar 12:23pm Tony Coulter:

Aha -- thanks, Jake. I'll check that out post-show.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Cmurtha:

How does a mixtape work for the purposes of Radio? Does some poor soul have to track down these people to give them a penny? OR CONSPIRACY TIME - Do you as the secret creator of the tape get the penny.
Avatar 12:25pm Tony Coulter:

Good question -- there are lots of radio hits mixed in here.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:26pm listener james from westwood:

LOL, that "Oh my gawd ... Harry!" was from an old glasses ad.
Avatar 12:29pm Tony Coulter:

If you're wondering: yes, this whole tape is mono.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Cmurtha:

What a topical tape
Avatar 12:34pm Tony Coulter:

This side of the tape is a lot more audio collagey -- side B is more of a straight mixtape.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Cmurtha:

A Cowboy's work is never done is a mad underplayed Sonny and Cher song.
Avatar 🥁 12:35pm Sem:

Is this a first, Sonny and Cher on the Drummer stream?
Avatar 12:35pm Tony Coulter:

Could be!
Avatar 12:36pm Tony Coulter:

Tho I can see Uncle Michael playing them....
Avatar 🥁 12:36pm Sem:

Right you are. UM would do that.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Cmurtha:

That was poetry, and now its lost forever...Tears in Rain and all that.
Avatar 12:44pm Tony Coulter:

By the way, delayed response to Cmurtha above: I am most definitely not the maker of this tape. Someone gave it to me, or I bought it in a thrift store somewhere -- just can't remember where it came from.
Avatar 12:47pm Tony Coulter:

Did anyone recognize the song that ended side A?
Avatar 12:50pm Tony Coulter:

I suppose this could even be an aircheck tape
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Yvang:

By the way, is this a (mystery) LP cover on the background?
Avatar 12:54pm Tony Coulter:

Interesting: No star is appearing next to the sides of this tape, because I credited it to "??"
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Cmurtha:

Yeah, no star shows up if thats blank. Typos or variance in attribution (both in albums and by djs) can also let you clicky-star the same song twice. I think I have 2-3 doubles because of that.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Yvang:

Can't show your appreciation fr "Unknow" neither
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Yvang:

I mean unknown
Avatar 12:58pm Tony Coulter:

@ Yvang: It is! Forgot to mention that.

So, can anyone ID today's mystery LP-under-the-cassettes? Here are some clues: It's Brit jazz rock from the '70s with links to lots of bands: Blossom Toes, Battered Ornaments, Mike Westbrook, even Magma. Any guesses?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Yvang:

Which is outrageous for WFMU
Avatar 12:58pm Tony Coulter:

Ha!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Yvang:

Gong?
Avatar 1:01pm Tony Coulter:

Good guess -- but, no. It's a more obscure band, with only one album.
Avatar 1:04pm Tony Coulter:

The cover art reminds me slightly of "Nursery Crime," by Genesis.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Yvang:

Or a Rothko painting?
Avatar 1:05pm Tony Coulter:

Any other guesses? You don't want to miss out on today's big prizes. I'll do the big reveal in 5 minutes.
Avatar 1:06pm Tony Coulter:

@ Yvang: The cover is less abstract that the portion I used would suggest.
Avatar 1:07pm Tony Coulter:

Actually, to make things harder: I used the back cover.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Cmurtha:

One of the odder James Bond songs
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Yvang:

Some songs on this tape are strangely accurate with the current state of the world...
Avatar 1:11pm Tony Coulter:

Guess we're always on the brink of disaster....
Avatar 1:12pm Tony Coulter:

And .... today's mystery LP is .... Mirage's "Now You See It...": www.discogs.com...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Yvang:

Now I see it
Avatar 1:25pm Tony Coulter:

Will you take to the skies?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:44pm ynod:

Heya Tony and all!
Avatar 1:46pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, ynod! (Why do I always feel like your handle is backward?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Tony and hissters
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Franco Twinkie:

Thank you Tony for that admission. I was wondering why I felt so unsettled. It was the Music! I suppose some folks found it calming, I was silently gnashing my teeth.
Avatar 1:48pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, coel and Franco T!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:50pm ynod:

@TC~ not backwards~ shorthand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm coelacanth∅:

(i immediately thought of gnod)
Avatar 1:52pm Tony Coulter:

Someone left the drum machine out in the rain
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:55pm ynod:

gnod makes some good soundSSSsss
  1:58pm Rory:

This is so good!
Avatar 2:04pm Tony Coulter:

Glad you're enjoying it!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:04pm listener james from westwood:

Calming music for studying the style sheet for a new editing project!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:05pm ynod:

Imagine if public transportation and municipal vehicles all had engines that sound like this...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:05pm ynod:

Maybe in Stuttgart
Avatar 2:06pm Tony Coulter:

@ James: That would make a great album title
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm coelacanth∅:

but the piston engine goes Boing Boing Boing, and the mazda goes mmmmm.
Avatar 2:09pm Tony Coulter:

"Soothing Music for Babies" .... "Calming Music for a Brand New Style Sheet."
  2:10pm Little Fyodor:

Hi Tony! Thanks to the virus, I can listen to your show live!! Well, the last hour anyway, I thought you started at 3 not finished at 3 and I just double checked to find out I was wrong! Well, home for three weeks so I'll catch more the next two times!!
Avatar 2:11pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Fyodor! I'll be here!
Avatar 2:12pm Tony Coulter:

At least the virus is good for something.....
  2:15pm Dean:

It's good for a number of things. For instance, GHG levels near Wuhan are down 25%.
Avatar 2:17pm Tony Coulter:

True! Think how unpolluted the world will eventually become after humanity dies off. (Heya, Dean!)
  2:19pm Dean:

Spare humanity, but Ford? GM? Shell? Not so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm fred:

Hello Tony and listeners. I read that a distillery in Portland was making sanitizer now. A troubling reversal of how things have worked for centuries
Avatar 2:22pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Fred! Hadn't heard that....
Avatar 2:26pm Listening Out There:

@fred, et al: Smart move by the distillery. Some folks are using vodka or Everclear for hand sanitizing.
Avatar 2:26pm Listening Out There:

...the distiller can create a "boutique" product and survive the slowdown in business!
Avatar 2:34pm Tony Coulter:

Here in Portland I've noticed that while business in restaurants has dropped of a lot, food carts seems to be doing OK. (Not a scientific study, just random observation, but....)
  2:38pm Dean:

But random observation is fundamental to scientific study!
Avatar 2:40pm Tony Coulter:

OK: My preliminary field work suggests....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:40pm ynod:

Like this murky sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm coelacanth∅:

the last track reminded me strongly of a song from the early 80s that got played on fmu a lot then, on the punk shows...so close, but i can't think of it.
something with a spoken story...
Avatar 2:42pm Tony Coulter:

Not sure....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:42pm ynod:

I wish I had discovered WFMU in the early eighties!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm coelacanth∅:

hmm, maybe that one about the fine young teenagers who kill themselves in a car crash
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm coelacanth∅:

gonna have to pull out all my own hissy tapes and look at song titles. my mind wont rest, i know it!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:46pm chresti:

Car Crash by the Avengers?
Avatar 🥁 2:47pm Sem:

Thank you, Tony, for driving us down obscure sideroads, with thrills an' chills at every turm. See you next time, wouldn't mhiss it for the world.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Cmurtha:

thank you for another great hiss!
Avatar 2:48pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, everybody! But ... stay tuned for two more tracks....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm coelacanth∅:

no but good guess chresti!
this is narrated in front of a wall of swirling distorted guitars and a medium-slow beat. he talks about these good students who were dating then "pretending to be drunk" and crashed the car...
Avatar 2:51pm Tony Coulter:

A little rock star gossip for you all: the lead vocalist of Theatre of Sheep (Rozz Rezabek) was Courtney Love's boyfriend for a while....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm coelacanth∅:

...anyway 2 of the PMA tracks reminded me of it, especiallythe 2nd or 3rd track on side b.
good stuff that pma.
Avatar 2:52pm Tony Coulter:

... while she was still in Portland.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:53pm JtotheK:

thanks for the tunes, Tony. The chilled out New Age vibes were superb!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm David Dichelle:
