Good morning, Florham Park.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am WR:

Very interesting Ellingtonia from McGregor band. And reflecting on A Train, that's a dance tune, right? Feels like we should be dancing, right? So a short recording like you played provides us the framework for what would could be 6 to 10 minutes of dancing with some soloists getting to do their thing, yeah? Maybe?
Avatar 9:27am DJpeterDE:

@WR definitely!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Jeff Golick:

I am hoping there will be dancing, yes!
Avatar 9:28am DJpeterDE:

I love this live sound. It sounds like an aircheck from a big echo-y ballroom

Bring it, @Sem!
Avatar 9:50am DJpeterDE:

Jeff, you can't steal from he who has already stolen from you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am doctorjazz:

Love South African jazz, though Abdullah Ibrahim is the one I know really extensively. (I've posted how I took my wife to see him at the old Sweet Basils on our 1st date before). Have to catch this whole sweet in the archives later! (And where's Ibrahim?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Jeff Golick:

Dollar Brand was in the Jazz Epistles, @doc. But yeah, this has been more McGregor than Brand/Ibrahim.
Avatar 9:55am DJpeterDE:

@doctorjazz he was on the "jazz epistles" track that kicked this off.
Avatar 9:57am DJpeterDE:

hahaha the cover art attributed to this is Johnny Griffin... probably "blue notes"/"blue note" confusion
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am doctorjazz:

OK, that's fine (what I get for arriving late). Have to track down some of these albums, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am doctorjazz:

I've always been curious about the JALC classes, sounds like a blast!
  10:05am Listener Gregory:

Jeff, update us on what is current in So African jazz when you get to it. I don't have a clue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am doctorjazz:

I believe Brand subbed for Ellington in the Orchestra for a short time, out I remember correctly.
Avatar 10:14am DJpeterDE:

@doctorjazz I've heard that too, no commercially available recordings as far as I know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am doctorjazz:

So, just started hunting for albums....The Complete Jazz Epistles seems to be tough to find...found a copy or 2 of the CD set for ridiculous money. Oto does have a download of a Moholo For The Blue Notes album. Ogun doesn't seem to be an active label, from what I can tell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Jeff Golick:

@LG: I will try to do that. The pianist who has visited the class is Aaron Rimbui, and he plays beautifully.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am doctorjazz:

(This had always been pay off the problem learning about South African jazz...it is almost always unavailable, released and discontinued quickly)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am doctorjazz:

That sounds like a class of love, if it's given again (and works with my office schedule)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am doctorjazz:

Cool track, The Walk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am doctorjazz:

Accordion for the fearless?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Jeff Golick:

Accordion to who?

@doc: I think you can order Ogun releases direct from the label: ogunrecording.co.uk...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am doctorjazz:

Thanks for the link, Jeff (a quick browse shows The Blue Notes collection out of print there too (which is why it is selling for stupid money...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am doctorjazz:

But I'm sure I'll find other doo good stuff there.
  10:40am Listener Gregory:

@doctorjazz, are you a doo-gooder?
Avatar 10:43am fred:

@Jeff: Maybe you should stop giving doctorjazz opportunities to spend his money for a few weeks. There's this marathon thing coming up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Jeff Golick:

You make a good point, @fred.
Avatar 10:46am Brian in UK:

Enough chain sawing. Cannot get the Dead's Box of Rain out of my head today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am doctorjazz:

Speaking of good stuff/doo gooder, I just ripped the Complete Atlantic Collections of Mingus and Ornette Coleman to send to a friend. Happy to add D.O. listeners when I send them, just contact me through the FMU site.
Avatar 10:47am Brian in UK:

Jeff, agree with Fred, bit like 'Just one last waffer thin biscuit'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Jeff Golick:

Time for some log-rolling, @Brian. How's the non-EU project going?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am doctorjazz:

...and it's just a box of rain, I don't know who put it there...
Now you got me doing it, BIUK!
  10:49am Listener Gregory:

Ornette's "Beauty is a Rare Thing" is perhaps the greatest box set ever. I saw it in a used record store and couldn't believe that anyone had sold it. Hopefully the person had died, or else s/he should be ashamed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am doctorjazz:

@Fred...my wife put you up to that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am WR:

Hah. doctorjazz, seems we are parallel shopping. Seems Hazel at Ogun has yet to embrace digital distribution. Wonder how long the Blue Notes box set has been oop. Cuniform has 3 Brotherhood of Breath concert releases on bandcamp. Searching now for Jazz The African Sound with the Kippie tune featuring what I think is the clarinet of Kippie Moeketsi who likely composed the tune as well.
  10:52am Jacinda:

Hi hi hi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Jeff Golick:

@LG: I bought that Ornette box used!
Avatar 10:53am Brian in UK:

Jeff, do I have to answer that. Which amendment is it?
  10:54am Doug Schulkind:

Back from yoga. Ready for some sweet sweet sounds!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am WR:

I bought the Ornette & the Mingus sets new. Essential.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Jeff Golick:

@Jacinda! @Doug's back!

@Brian, no of course not. Sorry for asking. (It's the fifth.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am coelacanth∅:

good morning Jeff; OUTies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Jeff Golick:

Hi there, @coelacanth∅!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am doctorjazz:

It is a fabulous box (as is the Mingus). I think the Ornette was recently reissued as a vinyl box as well (but how many times can you buy the same music...DON'T ANSWER THAT!
Avatar 10:56am DJpeterDE:

This CJQ is on bandcamp? Cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am doctorjazz:

I recently bought the 1st Sewelson ...Free World, haven't gotten the second yet.
  10:58am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, there is no shame in buying it used, only in selling it at all. I'm afraid I must be inflexible on this matter.
Avatar 10:58am fred:

@doctorjazz: I swear she wasn't involved in my suggestion. Though I guess that if you have to spend that money, she'd rather have it not bring more physical stuff into an already crowded space
Avatar 10:58am DJpeterDE:

weird that bandcamp lists the price in Euros for a NY based reissue of a Detroit record label
Avatar 10:59am holland oats:

turn off yer vpn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Jeff Golick:

The CJQ strikes me as perhaps a certain shade of gray.
Avatar 11:01am fred:

@DJpeterDE: some bandcamps display the price depending on the viewer's location
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Jeff Golick:

@fred: tho t-shirts definitely take up space, as I can attest.
  11:02am Listener Gregory:

Link to the Contemporary Jazz Quintet refers to that concert as "legendary." It seems to me that calling a record or event "legendary" usually means "almost no one has ever heard of this."
Avatar 11:03am fred:

@Jeff: they sure do: I have way over a hundred WFMU T-shirts
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am doctorjazz:

@Fred...i generally prefer the physical medium, if it is available (though Bandcamp is great, as they INCLUDE a good quality download with LP/CD purchases). I Have gotten into High Resolution digital downloads some, though (don't ask...)
Avatar 11:06am hyde:

i'm cooking up a storm over here this morning, and this is great cooking up a storm music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Jeff Golick:

We all cooking now.
  11:09am Listener Robert:

Whatcha cooking, hyde? Is it for self, household, company, or later?
  11:09am rw:

Good morning! Nothing cooking around here. Except for this D:O Solar Corona thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @rw! Hello.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am doctorjazz:

I'll be doing the eating thing soon (gotta help out the cooker-it's a tough job...)
Avatar 11:11am hyde:

@Listener Robert food for lunches this week, mostly. Japanese curry rice, bean leaves with oyster sauce, and popcorn chicken.
Avatar 11:11am fred:

@doctorjazz: I prefer physical formats too, but I'm getting to like digital more (for space reasons). Are you still refraining from annexing your daughters' rooms?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am WR:

Ha. Ha. On me. The Jazz, The African Sounnd has been reissued be Jazzman on bandcamp and I already have a couple things in quecfrom them. jazzmanholygrailseries.bandcamp.com...
Avatar 11:12am hyde:

*popcorn chicken: contains no actual popcorn
  11:13am John from Florham park:

@Doug how was yoga
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am doctorjazz:

Still managing to avoid taking them over, but space does have a way of disappearing.
  11:14am Listener Gregory:

In the basement, dealing with laundry in an environmentally responsible manner and missing some great music, it seems. Back to the hole!
  11:15am davefromtoronto:

good lord...i'm loving this!
  11:17am Listener Robert:

Hyde's got me salivating. I'm warming up some dough I made last night for pizza, but that's where my headphones don't reach, and the onboard speaker circuit on Nancy (laptop) is broken. Nancy's old, ailing, and cantankerous, like when she shut down a few minutes ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am doctorjazz:

@WR...my sympathies...
  11:18am John from Florham park:

Email once a day and there a few shows I listen too on the drummer stream and one of them is yours Jeff
  11:21am Listener Robert:

Actually even these headphones are ailing. Both ear pads fell off, and wires have breaks or shorts in them such that it has to hang juuust right for me to hear L & R channels.
  11:25am Listener Gregory:

Christensen was part of Keith Jarrett's "European Quartet," no? I think I heard that quite a bit back in the day.
  11:26am Listener Gregory:

That was probably his introduction to many in the US.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Jeff Golick:

Glad to hear it, @davefromtoronto (belatedly)!
And happy to have you, @John from Florham park!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Jeff Golick:

LG: yes, that's right. I'm sad to say I don't have a copy of Belonging. (Or rather, my vinyl copy is of no use to me given my current, dig-only set-up.)
  11:30am John from Florham park:

@Davefromtoronto I am not into jazz but I am loving this too
@Jeff happy to be here, more music lovers then on the main chat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am doctorjazz:

OK, take the show with me on Ozzie walk, thanks, Jeff! (Curious to hear more in the future about the Jazz Class at JALC).
Avatar 11:32am DJpeterDE:

Sart. weird. I have a Garbarek album called Star, Christensen isn't on it.
  11:33am John from Florham park:

@Doctorjazz late hello
Avatar 11:33am fred:

@Jeff: do you transfer your vinyl collection to digital?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Jeff Golick:

@fred: no, I don't have that capability. I just go elsewhere for the dig versions.
Avatar 11:34am DJpeterDE:

Fun Fact: Garbarek & Christensen first record together not on ECM, but under the auspices of... none other than George Russell
  11:36am Doug Schulkind:

I’m sure I have numerous albums featuring Christensen but, truth be told, I can’t say I’d been aware of him before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Jeff Golick:

Is that the Electric Sonata record, @DJpeterDE? Not enough time for something from that, unfortunately.
  11:36am Listener Gregory:

@DJpeter, !!!
  11:37am John from Florham park:

I am sitting here in a book store drinking sone coffee and captivated by this wonderful music Jeff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @Doug, I guess I'm taking this sad opportunity to make myself more aware...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Jeff Golick:

@John: happy to hear it! Also happy to hear that there are still book stores.
Avatar 11:39am DJpeterDE:

Indeed it is that record... but Electric Sonata was 1970, other tracks 1966 and 1968
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Jeff Golick:

Did you do a Christensen set/show, @DJpeter?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am doctorjazz:

Hi John!
Avatar 11:40am DJpeterDE:

@Doug, you probably just thought of him as "that ECM drummer" (his "sound" is what you remember)
Avatar 11:41am Wolfgang:

What a bummer to hear about Christenson. He was a frequent entry at the Stork.
Avatar 11:42am DJpeterDE:

@jeff I didn't do a JC show. But I did re-up my ECM anniversary show. That show got more listens than any other of mine (by a factor of 30), but I decided that it was due to the timing of Kongshaug's passing, people going on Mixcloud and searching for Kongshaug
  11:42am Listener Gregory:

Speaking of elderly jazz drummers, I recently saw Victor Lewis play (with Bobby Watson). He said he was 70; he looked like he was 70 (at least); he played like he was 40. I think drumming helps keep you in shape.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Jeff Golick:

@Wolfgang! (aka @Stork!) How goes the Club-readying?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Jeff Golick:

Roy Haynes probably agrees, @LG. And Louis Moholo-Moholo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Jeff Golick:

And Milford Graves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Jeff Golick:

And Han Bennink.
  11:44am John from Florham park:

@Wolfgang looking forward to your show
Avatar 11:45am hyde:

i've always dug that Terje Rypdal LP
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Jeff Golick:

Hey, folks, get your sole cleansed at the Stork Club, coming up here -- wfmu.org... -- at the top of the hour!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Jeff Golick:

@hyde: yeah, he has a way of sludging up the ECM-ness of everything that I really enjoy, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Shame on everyone who doesn't have a Phil Schaap command of knowledge of every player ever!
...Of course we'd like to appreciate people when they're still amongst us...

Thanks, @Wolfgang! What a pair of shews we have here.
Thanks for the link, @LG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am WR:

There are some vid clips shared by NRK from their vaults a few years ago that show Christensen & crew with Keith Jarrett in 74 and more interestingly backing some earlier jazz giants a few years earlier. Will look it up and follow up with some info. Gotta start cooking lunch now. laters.
  11:50am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff... and Jimmy Cobb.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Jeff Golick:

Bye, @WR! Thanks for being here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Jeff Golick:

@LG: oof, yeah, Cobb! He is not in the greatest of health, I hear.
  11:55am Listener Gregory:

Too bad. He did record two albums at age 90, though!
