I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Avatar 12:07pm Mayuko:

Good morning, chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Ivan:

Hi Mayuko! everyone! have a great show!
Avatar 12:09pm JosephB:

Hello Mayuko and Vertigang!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm coelacanth∅-:

greetings Mayuko; Mayuklings
  12:10pm Marie:

Hi Mayuko, hi all! thanks for the rocking' start today. It is just what I needed :>)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm fred:

This almost sounds Ethiopian, high praise in my book
Avatar 12:17pm Mayuko:

Hi Ivan! Thanks! Hello Joe B and Coel! Glad to be bringing stuff that's right for your mood today, Marie!
  12:17pm Marie:

Love the titles involved with this song (and the song)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm fred:

Les Rallizes Dénudés! I still wonder whether that nonsense name might be an anagram
Avatar 12:19pm Mayuko:

@fred I guess the rhythm? Both Yura yura teikoku and the mops tracks were in Japanese traditional dance music rhythm.
  12:24pm spodiodi:

greetings, Mayuko & adoring fans
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm chresti:

That looks like one hell of a road in the playlist pic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm fred:

I don't know why exactly, just got my shoulders itching to move. Traditional is probably more physical and translates well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm melinda:

hi Mayuko and all! I like your playlist colors.
Avatar 12:26pm Mayuko:

> Les Rallizes Dénudés My guess is it's just weird/wrong translation. Kinda like that fashion brand Superdry極度乾燥しなさい that I see all the time here in NYC, which always make me think wtf (though in their case it must be intentional...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm fred:

What does the Japanese wording for Superdry means?
  12:28pm Rickwaukee:

I was ready for Les Rallizes Denudes track to go on for the rest of the hour!
Avatar 12:29pm Mayuko:

Thanks for tuning in, spodiodi and melinda!
Avatar 12:29pm Mayuko:

@chresti I like that it says end but it doesn't end there.
  12:29pm JakeGould:

Hey Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Dropof Goldensun:

Hell is just the beginning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi Mayuko and Vertigo Players!
  12:32pm Ike:

Sounds good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm chresti:

Haha Dropof.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm fred:

I read that a member of Les Rallizes Dénudés lived/studied in France for a while. Made me wonder whether it might be an anagram with lézard (French for lizard) in it, or whether he met really rich people here, who tended to call parties "rallies" (I attended an upscale college for a few years, due to a court ruling I hadn't heard about)
Avatar 12:38pm Mayuko:

@fred I guess 極度乾燥 is not wrong for Superdry, but it really sounds weird to me especially combined with しなさい. There's a little more natural way of saying something being dry I think!
Avatar 12:38pm Mayuko:

@Rickwaukee Probably what I should have done!
Avatar 12:38pm Mayuko:

Hi Jake, and Ike!! Welcome!
Avatar 12:38pm Mayuko:

And Henry! Thanks for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Mayuko and vertigo group. 9 Eyes has a lot of neat stuff, including some macaques keeping warm in a hot spring. www.9-eyes.com
Avatar 12:46pm Mayuko:

@fred I think I read somewhere they were being "Ralli-ru" which is a Japanese slang for being high on drugs when they came up with the name. So it might just be their attempt of a JP/French pun. haha!
Avatar 12:47pm Mayuko:

@Ken Yeah! That website is pretty great.
  12:47pm rbrt:

hi! this fishmans song is great!
  12:49pm Rickwaukee:

Fishmans is reminding me of a 70s hit that featured the vocals of a woman seemingly in the throes of passionate lovemaking but I can't remember the title
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm fred:

@Mayuko: It's a great story, whether true or not. Confusing as many people as possible seems close to what they were doing
  12:53pm Doug Schulkind:

Hi, Mayuko. Loving the show so much!
Avatar 12:55pm Mayuko:

@rbrt yeah! they're forever the soundtrack for Tokyo summer - though it's NYC and winter here now.
Avatar 12:56pm Mayuko:

@Rickwaukee I'm curious! Though Fishmans songs/lyrics usually sound really stoned, doesn't seem too capable of lovemaking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm fred:

We don't have winter here this year, some trees are blooming, in February. Something is very wrong
  12:57pm Rickwaukee:

"Pillow Talk" by SYLVIA 1973
Avatar 12:58pm Mayuko:

Ah, that's great thanks Doug!!!!!!
Avatar 1:00pm JosephB:

Superdry 極度乾燥しなさい is like the reverse of the gibberish English you often see on clothing items in Japan -- gibberish Japanese for an English brand. Throwing random Japanese on stuff seems a growing trend right now (although that Superdry brand has been around for a while).
  1:03pm Ike:

So it effectively comes across as something like “Its Mega Driest!” maybe?
  1:04pm Rickwaukee:

He was straight up trippin, yo
  1:06pm rbrt:

I'm going to read this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm fred:

Is that the poet who was... puzzingly... portrayed in the hy4_4yh track you played years aoi?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm fred:

*years ago*
Avatar 1:16pm JosephB:

@Ike I would translate it as "dry it totally" -- it's an imperative command, which is weird
Avatar 1:16pm Mayuko:

@fred Oh my god! YES! You have incredibly good memory!!!!!!
Avatar 1:17pm Mayuko:

  1:17pm rbrt:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Ivan:

Les Rallizes Dénudés:
  1:21pm spodiodi:

beats the seashell racket, i suppose
  1:24pm Ike:

“Nazis Sell Eel Udders” is fabulous.
Avatar 1:25pm Mayuko:

@Joe B You're right. It does make me wonder why they'd do that. I saw a bunch of gibberish Japanese in Hong Kong, and still do in Chinatown. I guess they have some trust in Japanese products. But not sure when it's an English brand, if it's irony or a genuine interest in Japanese culture or what.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm fred:

When in doubt, just assume they don't care and are just out to make as much money as they can
Avatar 1:32pm Sem:

Liking this a bunch.
Good afternoon, Mayuko, fred, the ike, and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm fred:

@Sem: I subscribed to conjunctions, I don't like it wholeheartedly, but it does challenge me, which is good
Avatar 1:36pm Mayuko:

@fred it is hard to assume people's motivation. Sometimes I see Japanese/Chinese character tattoos that are kind of like 極度乾燥しなさい, which is funny and also makes me feel a little sorry. However the best tattoo I've ever seen says 首(neck) on his neck, so I do hope people keep getting Japanese tattoos.
Avatar 1:36pm Mayuko:

Hi Sem! Happy to have you here!!
Avatar 1:39pm JosephB:

Back when I taught ESL students here in LA, every time a student came in wearing some shirt with an English phrase I would test them and see if they knew what it meant. Many times they had no idea. I didn't mean to be tough on them, I just thought they should know. Once a guy came in wearing a shirt that said "Don't push me 'cuz I'm close to the edge," and he had never heard of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Definitely a teachable moment.
Avatar 1:44pm Sem:

@fred: no lack of variety there, and no doubt every style. Short wikipedia piece describes an uber-ambitious mission statement for Conjunctions, hope you find plenty to ponder.
  1:45pm rbrt:

I can't get used to seeing the date "2020"
  1:46pm spodiodi:

i hear you, rbrt. cool story, JosephB
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm coelacanth∅-:

Joseph some people need someone to be tough on them. -what the hell are they doing wearing a phrase they don't understand!
like all these kids i see wearing velvet underground or ramones tshirts...the ones that carry skateboards but never get on them. we all know they don't listen to those bands.
Avatar 1:48pm Mayuko:

@Joe B They definitely should know and I think you were indeed being helpful! Some English writings on Japanese clothing are truly ridiculous. But how does one get a Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five shirt without knowing? I guess it wasn't exactly a band t-shirt type of thing, just a quote?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm fred:

@Sem: plenty to ponder there, including what I should dismiss. Not that I'm in a position to do so, but it's a very literate publication, and my not wealthy background sometimes rears its head
Avatar 1:50pm Mayuko:

@rbrt Me neither! by the time we get used to it 2020 will be halfway over!!! :'(
  1:50pm rbrt:

Avatar 1:52pm JosephB:

@Coel @Mayuko It was just a t-shirt with a graphic with that phrase written over it. Not obviously a band shirt. We ended up watching the video to that song and discussing the lyrics -- much more fun than the textbooks we were given! I never saw him wear the shirt again, though.
  1:54pm rbrt:

they're just kids being kids? best time in life to do silly shit
Avatar 1:55pm Mayuko:

@Joe B That's very cool! And kinda funny he stopped wearing it.
I don't think I knew you used to be an ESL teacher - as a former student I'm forever grateful to all the ESL teachers, you guys are real unsung heroes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Dropof Goldensun:

Let's not forget the Frankie shirts from the 80's!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm fred:

I think my parallel chat with Sem was enriched by this talk about Melle Mel T-shirts. I feel I was talking about the same thing
Avatar 1:56pm Sem:

You're a thoughtful reader, fred, it's your perogative to accept or dismiss material for whatever reason, very literate or otherwise. In the end it is art, and art engages you or it doesn't. It's not meant to be an obstacle course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Dropof Goldensun:

It honestly is the fastest 2 hours of my work day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks, Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm coelacanth∅-:

i would wear a phrase on a tshirt if i liked the phrase, oblivious to where the phrase came from.
i'd be very thankful though if one day someone said "hey cool i love that movie!" (and i had to admit i never knew godspeed you, black emperor was a movie)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Dropof Goldensun:

Thanks Mayuko! Have a great week everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm chresti:

Thanks Mayuko!
Avatar 1:58pm Sem:

THx, Mayuko. Happily, the power which has been out since last night returned in time to catch the end of your show. Fate, or what?
  1:59pm Rickwaukee:

Thanks for another fine batch of tunes, Mayuko! Have a beautiful week
  1:59pm rbrt:

thanks for the book and the music Mayuko!

Avatar 2:00pm JosephB:

@Coel I didn't know that! @Mayuko Your english is great, and I'm sure you were the type of student every ESL teacher wants to have in the classroom. Thanks again for another awesome show! Catch everyone next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Mayuko. All's well that ends well.
Avatar 2:02pm Mayuko:

@Sem power out!? Sorry that was happening!! I'm so glad it got back in time for me indeed! thanks for listening!!
Avatar 2:02pm Mayuko:

Thanks again everyone for listening! I hope to see you all next week!!!

Hi Mayuko and any archive visitors. Have some time waiting and checking Twitter see that you have written pieces on medium. Read your mantis quest. I start listening here. Seems to align.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm WR:

Ah, reading Bashou. Have you previously read much of him in Japanese, beyond little bits you probably got in school? I read a bit over 30 years ago. Very little bit.
