Options February 4, 2020: You Can Sample: Wave Three

Live Chat! Trouble Multitasking! Dancing Cats! Restlessness! Cheese Platters! Hyperactivity! NSFW OMG BYOB!

"Hey mannn, is that sample rock" ... "Well... turn, it, UP!"

Over the past three decades I have been sampling for music projects. From recording to cassettes... to saving on floppy to zips... to organizing on the hard drive. Today we are going to hear those samples back-to-back for 4 hours.

Thousands of files have been sourced for future 'You Can Sample' shows. This is the third installment of 3,300 sounds.

Some quick notes on the process of collecting samples:
- In Windows 10, searched all sample folders for *.wav
- Used a tiny program, 'Bulk Rename Utility' to randomize the order of files and apply a number prefix (00000)
- Selected blocks of files in the folder (in 4 hour sets for future shows)
- Open Appended Files in Adobe Audition (and took a screenshot that appears below)
- Used another tiny program, 'JR Directory Printer' to print the directory contents of the files in the folder to a text file.

I'm listening to this for the first time today, live with you on the show! It's all random and I'm sure we will hear some funny bits colliding with one another.

You Can Sample (previous shows):
- Wave One : August 25, 2019
- Wave Two : November 10, 2019

I'm still going through Wave One!
Avatar 11:57am Otis Fodder:

I have one more Wave to go after this one. Once I play all 4 here, I'm going to offer WAV file downloads of all 4 shows, 16 hours from my website. Later this year and will mention the link when the 4th show airs in time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Mr Fab:

Then play all 4 at once!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Webhamster Henry:

I like instructional records and if Mr. Fab doesn't have the Norbert hairdressing record featured by Joe McGasko yesterday, you should get it in the mix ASAP.
Avatar 12:00pm Otis Fodder:

Go on a 16-hour scenic drive and drive yerself batty!
Avatar 12:01pm Otis Fodder:

Oh wow, whaaaat? I need to check that one out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Webhamster Henry:

It's spectacular! And you'll look great if you follow the instructions, and learn
a little French as well.
Avatar 12:02pm Otis Fodder:

I look forward to feeling spectacular and radiant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Rich in Washington:

Loved that haircut theme on Joe's show yesterday. I was a bit disappointed not to hear Charlie Got A Haircut by Happy Flowers but that's just me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Webhamster Henry:

He could have gone on and on, but Joe is very tasteful and knows when to stop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Webhamster Henry:

...and if you like what you hear today, thousands of spoken word bits were passed to Mr Fab recently and are now appearing in the Sheena stream breaking apart hit after hit after hit.
Avatar 1:06pm Otis, full of fodder:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Rich in Washington:

Hi Granny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Rich in Washington:

The Optigan starter pack samples always make me smile.
Avatar 1:28pm Otis, full of fodder:

Big thanks to Pea @ optigan.com for passing me the sample pack (almost 20 years ago). Since that time there is a newer cleaner bunch of samples I recall from master tapes. Ah, to dream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Rich in Washington:

We had one as a kid. A cast-off from a well-off gadgety uncle. My brother and I just liked listening to the non-music samples. The bells, crowd noises, etc. Or just playing the chord buttons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

am i the only kook who has clicky starred this madness? must i suffer alone?!?!?!
Avatar 1:39pm ARB:

going to go walk the stabway to chinatown to use up all this excess energy you've given me, thanks Otis!!!!
Avatar 1:42pm Otis, full of fodder:

Bye ARB, thanks for stopping by the mind-melt.

GST - Ha! I wish I had 3,300 tracks to choose clicky stars for.
Avatar 1:46pm ARB:

Avatar 1:48pm Domenic:

Avatar 1:51pm Otis, full of fodder:

Be careful of outbursts of laughter while walking ARB!

Hi Domenic, thanks!!
Avatar 2:07pm Domenic:

Are my ears going to be all red and chaffed after hearing over 3000 sound samples?
  2:09pm Martinibomb:

@otis so I have some time to do design work for Sheena. You wanna art direct me as far as redoing the sheena main page? I can lay it all out etc..
  2:10pm Martinibomb:

then u can take over implementing it while I assist?
Avatar 2:10pm Otis, full of fodder:

MB - Possibly, time is tight now but let's start a thread in Slack totally.
  2:12pm Martinibomb:

okay thread started :-)
Avatar 2:14pm Otis, full of fodder:

Cool, I'm there. This way other Sheena Selectors see it.
  2:28pm Martinibomb:

  2:29pm Martinibomb:

I like that you sample one shot guitar, piano, synth etc... so u can make instruments out of em
  2:30pm TheHipMen:

Hi everyone
Avatar 2:33pm Otis, full of fodder:

Hello TheHipMen!
  2:36pm TheHipMen:

All these samples sound like stuff you hear in Bran Flakes tracks
  2:38pm TheHipMen:

Ah, he said bran flakes
Avatar 2:39pm Otis, full of fodder:

A good bit of them made in into tracks. Most did not. Sharing here and after one more show this year, I'll put all 16 hours online for others to download.
Avatar 2:42pm Domenic:

A lot of these sound familiar. Been digging this stuff for too long! LOL.
  2:43pm TheHipMen:

A lot of these samples seem to come from the 70's
  2:48pm TheHipMen:

Ah, he said sample
  2:51pm TheHipMen:

9 minutes left
Avatar 2:53pm Otis, full of fodder:

Samples from 50s-80s mostly, but yea, loads of stuff from the 70s. Might go a couple of minutes over.
  2:53pm TheHipMen:

  3:03pm TheHipMen:

And it is over thanks Otis
  3:03pm Martinibomb:

thanks Otis
Avatar 3:06pm Otis, full of fodder:
