Futile expeditions to the edges of good taste, bad morals, and ugly intententions. Late night drives somewhere between Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle and The White Castle of Fear.
Second Hand Pop, MIDI grunge soundalikes, and uncanny Japanese karaoke.

Had to Sound Hound that opening Abecedarians track cuz app wasn't loading song info. That's awesome!
  3:48am dan vallejo:

fuckkk.
  3:49am dan vallejo:

I've been listening for the last hanf hour or so, everything has been terrific.
  3:49am dan vallejo:

But this P-Model track, mind bending.
  3:51am dan vallejo:

Lo Lo Yo, has gotta be a captain beefheart reference.
  3:52am Diezel Tea:

Great set so far, Darren.
  3:52am dan vallejo:

ohhh more clear now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57am Baja Joe:

Hidey ho. I'll be listening on the road. Sounds great.
  3:57am Aaron Working In Newark:

right on!
  4:08am Diezel Tea:

I wonder why P-Model never struck it big..... I thought I was listening to a Providence band circa turn of the millennium.
  4:12am dan vallejo:

agreed

Hello Darren and listeners
  4:34am dan vallejo:

Big black's atomizer and chrome's 3rd from the son are touchstones of mine. Both great album covers too. This is awesome though, I never heard this track, I should really check out BB's other stuff.
  4:42am dan vallejo:

Also rest in peace Andy Gill of Gang of Four. This GAS track is quite nice. Love the side chain feeling.
  4:46am Diezel Tea:

Hah, @Dan Vallejo when I was in audio school one of our profs (forget his name but the dude that produced Television's Adventure) was saying something wiiiiiise like compression should never be noticeable, old fogey stuff. Screw that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57am Darren:

Thanks for hanging everyone, hope everyone's having a radical day!
  5:10am dan vallejo:

Thanks Darren, great set, thanks for putting it together.

Diezel, super true, nice to see the way that breaking the rules one grows up in can create such great results. I think there's something very human in that. Like we each create these self-constraints as we get older trying to fix problems that we encountered and then we teach those constraints to people who don't have a clue what we're talking about. Wonder what messed up things we're indoctrinating into our own mentees who will be inspired to prove us wrong.

This Moonriders track is great. Good find.
  5:13am Diezel Tea:

Thank you Darren for tickling our ears. I found out recently that pharmacies here in Armenia sell pure ethanol by the half-liter bottle. Not only can you clean wounds, acceleration of fires for BBQ or whatever, but you can also pour a capful (maybe that's like 5-10ml?) into your tea and get a rather clean buzz going on. A bottle costs the equivalent of less than $3. So that's how my day is going, hehe.
  5:15am dan vallejo:

Hope it's pure, Diezel, be careful! But that sounds awesome :) What kind of tea do you drink there? I'm in california, drinking chinese white tea.
  5:21am dan vallejo:

In the US they only sell ethanol in the markets as 'denatured alcohol' which is poisoned, which seems kinda criminal really. Oliver Sacks made his name originally from treating patients who were in semi-comas from drinking poisoned alcohol in the US prohibition era. Strange, the human legacy of such political movements.
  5:22am dan vallejo:

That izmi kobayashi track, also fantastic find.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26am fred:

@dan vallejo: That reminds of a story a former coworker told about his military service in the red army (the guy's Armenian, coincidentally). On his first day in winter in Kazakhstan, an officer told the troops that there were two kinds of anti-freeze, only one of which was drinkable. The two kinds of containers were helpfully painted in different colors
  5:30am dan vallejo:

Thank god they were painted different colors accurately. I'm thinking, I'm thinking especially of this incident in irkutsk, I think where people were regularly drinking bath lotion (not to be confused with florida bath salts, hah), and a batch came in with methanol instead of ethanol: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Irkutsk_mass_methanol_poisoning

Safer though if you're buying something clearly marked ethanol. Not safe, necessarily, but safer. You gotta vet the dealer, always, I guess.
Avatar 5:30am Malcolm:

i've heard this nigeria 70 compilation is very good. I covet it.
  5:33am dan vallejo:

That Nigerian stuff is fantastic, I thought I had an album called electric nigeria or something but I can't find it. I don't trust itunes anymore to let me search my own music, ach.
  5:37am Diezel Tea:

Yeah, over here we're still lacking in a lot of regulations. And don't worry, it's pure, 100% ethanol. I think adding anything to it would be too costly for the company. In the mountains thyme and a few mints are indigenous, so the villagers go up, pick it, dry it and sell it. Right now I'm drinking դաղծ which is one of the mint varieties.
  5:43am dan vallejo:

Jesus, ry cooder gets around, this sound great. mixture of bollywood and china.

Diezel, that's good to hear, always be suspicious! Those mountain herbs sound nice. I wasn't able to translate դաղծ into anything I could figure out, but mint tea is something my family grows as well. the mint grows like a weed, very easy to get more than enough for the whole year, and a very nice taste.
  5:45am hoeg:

Loving this set Darren thanks :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46am fred:

@dan vallejo: I think the Shokichi Kina & Ry Cooder track comes from Okinawa, not China
  5:46am dan vallejo:

Yeah, it's fantastic, I agree. All this music is a total mental lubricant.
  5:48am dan vallejo:

Oh, @fred, I just assumed jing jing was chinese, but you're right, Shokichi Kina sounds like it's probably a japanese collaboration. Thanks for the correction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51am fred:

Another red army safety tip: bring the anti-freeze inside for a while before drinking, or it will freeze your guts instantly
  5:52am dan vallejo:

Relistening to it now, and of course it's japanese, also, amusingly, on the 'peppermint tea house' collection: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBMNHel17Pw

Oh man, Fred, that reminds me of reading about drinking in antarctica, lots of crazy dangerous stuff. But drinking subzero antifreeze, never thought of that!!
  5:57am dan vallejo:

I'm off into my own reveries for the night, but wishing everyone a safe and productive day, I think i's sunday all around the world now. Best to all and good night.
  5:58am Diezel Tea:

Haha, Fred, right on. I can't imagine needing to drink antifreeze in the red army. According to my FiL who served, you had vodka with every meal anyway. Fun fact: during the Chernobyl meltdown he volunteered to go to Ukraine and help evacuate people. Even though the union collapsed, he has a doc that gets him free medical care (not that he needs it) in the post-Soviet states today.
