  3:07pm John from Florham park:

@Handy since I regularly listened to this station back last January, this one of these shows I can’t do without
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Listener Howard & the Cats:

I would love to see/hear an entire production of OLIVER that sounded like that Jacki Bond cover!!! Was there one, Sheila, or just that one song?
Avatar 3:09pm djsheilab:

Most chuffed to see the ears prick up for Jacki Bond!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Handy Haversack:

I hear you, John. Kate and I both fell hard for this show. I think it was desperation to listen on a day that the radio reception was really bad that first led us to listening online and, eventually, me to the boards.
Avatar 3:10pm djsheilab:

Listeners Howard & the Cats—That is hands down her best record. Some other great singles but nothing quite on that level.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Yes:

Hi all :)

Here's a question for the Boom Boom cognoscenti: anyone have any record shopping recommendations for Paris? I'm going for the first time in a couple of weeks, and this seems like a promising place to ask for pointers :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Handy Haversack:

"Pressure fried"! I think that's the same as "Broasted."
Avatar 3:25pm djsheilab:

Thanks P-90!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm loveless:

I love this song, “Jaipur”. It’s so dreamy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Handy Haversack:

@The Oscar: I was not specifically on the lookout, but I would certainly try the market St. Ouen. It's just outside the city center to the north. Easy to get to on Metro or a ~40 min. walk from Montmartre and Sacre Coeur.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm The Oscar:

@Handy Sounds like a good place to start-- thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm frozen_peas:

similar to Oscar's question, what record shops should I try to hit up in Tokyo in a few weeks? First time visiting and record shopping is high on the list of things to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Handy Haversack:

It's a wild place. It's where I got my Bakelite dice!

Swag For Life Member 3:36pm caver_mike:

Hi Sheila - My favorite would be Patti Smith "We Three". Great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Passaic River Blues:

Where's Rob Kopp for the pronunciation?

I usually chime in via my phone so I've never seen profile pics. I'm sorry I've missed the story behind yours, Sheila B--priceless!
  3:37pm John from Florham park:

@PRB was wondering the same thing myself
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Tommy in Neversink:

Dave , I'm hoping we can have a version of Brexit here in the US --the rational people seceding from the stupid people
Avatar 3:38pm djsheilab:

HAHA! Tommy in Neversink—Thank you for that.
  3:39pm Dave Spice:

For the Feb 14th show I'll recommend a love song by a local UK girl - Percy Anderson by Jasmine Kennedy.
  3:39pm John from Florham park:

@Tommy or separate us from the people who voted for he who must not be named
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm chris:

my current favorite female-fronted love song is from an art installation, and i have no idea how to find the music. did you see Death is Elsewhere at the Met? www.metmuseum.org...

Avatar 3:40pm Cool Runnings:

Good afternoon Sheilahb I Love - Broken Hearted Melody - by Sarah Vaughan
Avatar 3:41pm djsheilab:

If there were no 'stupid' people how would you know that you are 'rational'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Tommy in Neversink:

PJ Harvey--DRESS
  3:42pm Jocelyn:

Broken hearted Melody is wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Handy Haversack:

Nice one, @Tommy in Neversink
  3:43pm Dave In Leicester:

Unfortunately here the stupid have seceded and dragged the rational along with them
  3:43pm Jocelyn:

Sheila, it has to be Be My Baby. It’s THE song. I know it’s generic to some but it’ll never stop being the most blissful two minutes and forty one seconds.
Avatar 3:44pm djsheilab:

Jocelyn—When I get asked my favorite song of all-time, Be My Baby is it!
Avatar 3:45pm βrian:

Ooh, that sax really says "1978."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Handy Haversack:

In honor of your book today, SheilaB, I'm gonna nominate Liz Phair's "Supernova." I'll get Kate to chime in with her choice when she gets home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Tommy in Neversink:

Brian...when we form our rational nation there will be ,of course, be varying levels of rationality, competitive attitudes regarding rationality till certain aspects of our society would start to be viewed as stupid in relative terms and then just plain stupid...that's how we will know we are rational
Avatar 3:48pm Brian in UK:

@djsheilab enjoying these songs; it is a deep well that you draw from.
Avatar 3:49pm djsheilab:

Thanks Brian in UK!

Marie, I am going to assume this is not directed to me!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Tommy in Neversink:

Yes Dave that seems to be the case

That's correct, Mr. Pumpy, your memory's working fine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Handy Haversack:

Kate's gonna think of her no. 1 pick while she's out getting vodka. Updates soon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Mr. Pumpy:

Ahhh...yeah. We loft off at Ricky Jay. That man was a god...and charismatic as well. I saw a documentary wherein he discusses the history of magic and slight of hand and such. Riveting.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 4:39pm tneeld:

@djsheilab oh - did you see Phair at Irving Plaza earlier that year with Pavement and a few others? All I remember is that audience really wanted Pavement to be The Fall. And that Phair refused an encore, but came out on stage to tell everyone that she wasn't playing an encore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm The Oscar:

I was kind of curious to see The Turning, but they didn't screen it for critics and I think it might already be out of theaters...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Mr. Pumpy:

djshiela...here's a Siouxsie tune I recently discovered which I didn't know about...perhaps good for the 2/14 show: www.youtube.com...
  4:41pm Dave Spice:

Warpaint sound like they've been listening to the Stone Roses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Mr. Pumpy:

djsheila...and there's always this Lavern Baker cover of the Searchers' Bumble Bee...amazing! youtu.be...
Avatar 4:42pm mariano:

Yes, Ricky Jay was as much a scholar of magic as a master magician. He left one of the most impressive magic libraries. There's some good YouTube clips of him - shows, clips of individual tricks. I always liked him in Mamet films too. He had such a natural NYC card-shark vibe.
Avatar 4:43pm tak:

sounding pretty close to what they used to 10 years ago, love it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Handy Haversack:

@mariano, Mr. Pumpy do you have Ricky Jay's book of photos of his collection of disintegrating dice?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Rob Kopp:

You don't more than a voice and a guitar, isn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm chris:

so happy there's new Cat Power. yay! :)

This Marianne Faithfull is SO dark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm chris:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Handy Haversack:

@mariano, it's a beautiful book: www.abebooks.com...

Yeah, this Marianne Faithfull is really bringing the dark in.
  4:51pm Dave Spice:

There's a great movie with Marianne Faithful in the lead - no, not the motorbike one - it's called Irina Palm. She plays an older sex worker - French crew - British movie. Brilliant.
  4:52pm Frank Zaatar:

Yes, that Marianne Faithfull is really chilling. I wonder if she sang any Brecht-Weill tunes?
Avatar 4:53pm mariano:

Thanks Handy, looks really cool, just might have to get a copy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Passaic River Blues:

This LeGette track has an excellent Alain Goraguer "La Planete Sauvage" vibe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Handy Haversack:

@SheilaB, Kate would like to nominate Bjork's "All Is Full of Love" for the show in two weeks -- a song she used to cover with her jazz band to tremendous effect. I can testify.

She was glad Tommy in Neversink had PJ Harvey covered!

Avatar 5:00pm Dave Spice:

@John at Florham Park - It's grim and gritty. Pretty Woman it definitely isn't
Avatar 5:01pm D. Lightfoot:

I've been listening to this show for what feels like many years and it remains the best weekly radio music program ever, IMO.
  5:05pm PJ:

@Frank Zataar You're joking, right? Marianne did a whole album of Weill tunes, 20th Century Blues.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm Handy Haversack:

In stock at our local bookstore. Will grab this weekend.
Avatar 5:08pm djsheilab:

Hey Monica! Isn't the atmosphere on that record just fab?!! I don't know much Stephanie Mills. But if she's anything like LaRhonda LeGette I gotta get on that!

@Dave Spice I should say not

Rudy from Lyon—It's my pleasure! There is such a wealth of fabulous music coming out of France, past and present.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Handy Haversack:

I *think* at one point near the end Jeanne-Marie Sens mentioned the "gentle slaughterhouse in my house," but I'm worse at listening than I am at speaking or reading it. And then "dawns"?

Avatar 5:30pm Listening Out There:

Thought she did. Thx!
  5:32pm Dave Spice:

I always love the show but tonight is something else. Darkly themed and lusciously textured.
  5:32pm BH:

the format of the schedule page probably lends itself to confusion over the midnight-6am ET shows... but then again, I use going to sleep as the line of demarcation between one day to the next
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Handy Haversack:

Every set leaping even higher than that last! This show is really bringing it. I'm floored. I want to grab all of my friends and be like, "Stop worrying about eating or your families or your jobs -- listen to Sophisticated Boom Boom and make yourselves happier!"

I'll think of slightly chiller ways to spread the word. But SheilaB, tonight's show really something else!
