Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Nick channeling Ronnie Spector.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Uncle Michael:

WR! Doc!
Avatar 12:14pm Brian in UK:

Uncle, I see. One of Firesign is on that album, making the exploding noise on Draft Morning. Allegedly.
Avatar 12:15pm Franco Twinkie:

Is it bad form to say my spirit animal has been grilled and put on a tortilla with lots of fresh beans and salsa verde?
Avatar 12:15pm βrian:

We used to be dinks in our household. Now we're dioks. That came as a surprise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Rich in Washington:

What kind of hinky dink you peddling here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm WR:

Franco, didn't someone write that you are videoing your adventures with freshly made tortillas and mole? When is the premier?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Uncle Michael:

Rich!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm chresti:

I've been told that Bobcat is my spirit animal.
Avatar 12:22pm Franco Twinkie:

WR, was that me shooting my mouth off again? Yes I am, but the story is just starting to reveal itself. Many more tortillas must be consumed and considered before I can get out the digital glue gun.
Avatar 12:24pm βrian:

Spirit Mole was Doug's first band in high school, I've heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Jeff Golick:

I just got Caravan bingo.
Avatar 12:27pm Franco Twinkie:

Brian, Fresh Mole was the lead track on the first Spirit album, but in 1968 mole was unknown to most people, so they changed the title to Fresh Garbage.
  12:28pm johnk77:

spirit killed live
Avatar 12:31pm Franco Twinkie:

Spirit had a hit with I Got A Line On You, which was originally called I Got Mole On My Shirt, but once again cooler heads prevailed.
Avatar 12:32pm Roberto:

Now that UM has broached the subject, I'm having major orthodontic work done and my mouf is full of all kinds of meshugos.
Avatar 12:33pm Roberto:

And it's only going to get worse from here.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Jeff Golick:

Lyrically, KISS might've been a bit one-note.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Uncle Michael:

They were committed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Jeff Golick:

I should've signed that comment, "Captain Obvious."

i could barely feel my new dentist's hands in my mouth. so gentle. no pain.
Avatar 1:01pm Listening Out There:

When I go to the dentist's I hear...Chicago, The Eagles, Elton John...another downside to those visits...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm chresti:

AI probably curated the music selection
  1:02pm John from Florham park:

Uncle Michael the only channel I listen too on SiriusXM is deep tracks and they are doing a tribute to rush wich gets a little old after a while
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm chresti:

haha Turn up the drill!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Uncle Michael:

spodi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm WR:

All pain is relative.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm The Oscar:

Eye-to-eye contact sounds uncomfortable.
Avatar 1:04pm Franco Twinkie:

If we were youngsters we might be talking about going to buy a bag of weed and some acid in excruciating detail, but time moves on and priorities change, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Handy Haversack:

Goodness, I missed quite a set on the way home. But now I can turn up the volume at least. Hello, all. First time listening to this show. Hiya, John from FP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Uncle Michael:

Oscar!
Avatar 1:05pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

My dentist has the Sirius "romance" channel which is mostly horrible 70s era goopy love songs. Used to be just the straight 70s channel which at least had more variety.

During the holidays they had on the Hallmark holiday channel (although both the dentist and her assistant are Indian and remarked that they hear enough holiday music elsewhere) AND I got hit by the $%*^(*& Little Drummer Boy. Adding insult to injury!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Uncle Michael:

Handy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Uncle Michael:

Damn, Lizzie.
  1:12pm dan:

Sounds just like "Rock Around The Clock"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Uncle Michael:

And "Move It On Over".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Handy Haversack:

People used to be able to jump only on clocks as they moved over. Led to some confusion in early rock.
  1:14pm dan:

RASPBERRIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  1:20pm Mark R.:

Nice to hear one of the Mott album tracks, I really only know the hits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Uncle Michael:

This is one of my favorite Mott tracks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Jeff Golick:

I like Ian Hunter's voice.
  1:21pm dan:

I would love to hear Mott The Hoople in a dentist waiting room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Uncle Michael:

Mark!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm doctorjazz:

My dentist used to let me pick a channel on Spotify to listen to while he worked. He stopped doing that, though, just current pop now, if anything (I wonder if my asking for the Ornette Coleman channel had anything to do with that...)
Avatar 1:25pm βrian:

Yesterday, we were discussing listening to Arvo Pärt while in the dentist's chair.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm chresti:

I think opera or classical would go with the drill sounds.
  1:27pm Mark R.:

The WFMU app on your phone is handy at the dentist. I once listened to Trouble's show while getting a root canal (true story).
Avatar 1:31pm βrian:

I'm down to zero apps on my phone now. Nice and tidy.
  1:31pm dan:

Got to hear ELO perform this live at Radio City, simply amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Uncle Michael:

Brian, you could just carry around a candy bar or a bar of soap.
Avatar 1:36pm βrian:

Nah, I have a browser, e-mail, text, and even a friggin' video camera. Apps are just vectors of infection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm chresti:

Haha UM.
Avatar 1:38pm Hubig Pie:

Townes Van Zandt for the dentist chair music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm annie:

i worked for a woman who found his music fine....we went crazy listening to hour after hour of (t)his drudge
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Uncle Michael:

Hubig!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Uncle Michael:

annie! I adore this drudge...what a GREAT album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm chresti:

People are getting their phones swiped from their hands in downtown LA, having a bar of soap in their hands instead would of prevented that.
Avatar 1:43pm Franco Twinkie:

Chresti and I were just talking about ELO and their tenancy to sing about winsome unrealized emotional states, as opposed to Mott The Hoople who described dodgier situations that you might look at as aspirational. Am I nuts?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Uncle Michael:

I have no opinion with regard to your mental state, Franco. I'm not a qualified therapist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm annie:

well,UM, ya had to be there... it was tedious a terrible way to turn someone on to townes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Uncle Michael:

I thought we were talking about Crosby!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm annie:

... andi LOVE townes's music
Avatar 1:48pm Franco Twinkie:

Fair enough, Michael. However an objective listener would most likely come to the same conclusion.
  1:48pm dan:

Nobel Laureate Robert Zimmerman
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Uncle Michael:

I have never been accused of being one of those, either.
Avatar 1:51pm still b/p:

I used to love hearing 'Lily..." on the radio back in the day. I'm sure my responsiveness must be mentioned in the documentary about WBCN that's showing in Monty Hall soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Uncle Michael:

still b/p! Mentioned in the documentary?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm doctorjazz:

Bobby Die-lan, started watching the doc, Rolling Thunder, music was fun in it.
Avatar 1:55pm still b/p:

Noooo...no mention in it, just being silly about them being of course oblivious to what kids in the 'burbs listening might find extra appeal in.
I am eager to see the doc if it comes 'round my way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Jeff Golick:

I listened to this Bob recently. Still not into it. I think it's because I don't listen to words that closely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Uncle Michael:

It's a great movie, Jeff.
Avatar 1:58pm βrian:

Ah, I read that as WCBN. I'd love to see that, if so.
Avatar 1:59pm Franco Twinkie:

So, The Grateful Dead recorded this before John Philips, the writer?
Avatar 2:04pm Listening Out There:

Another tune that would have fit in that set is Mountain's "Theme for an Imaginary Western." Woulda, woulda...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm chresti:

This "Dawn Air" would work with a root canal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm doctorjazz:

Awww, missed Townes...
Avatar 2:05pm Franco Twinkie:

How about Western Movies by The Olympics?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Uncle Michael:

Yes, Franco.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm Uncle Michael:

And Heroes & Villains...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Gaylord Fields:

Hi, Uncle Michael! Sorry I missed the Kiss covers set (but then again, I can listen to it in perpetuity in about an hour).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Uncle Michael:

Hey Gaylord! I shoulda known that was in your wheelhouse.
Avatar 2:12pm still b/p:

This Lynne song is beautiful. And makes me weep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Gaylord Fields:

Oh, yeah! One of my favorites is the Volebeats' version of "See You Tonight" from the Gene solo LP.
  2:14pm Marie:

Another ab fab gif. I'm really enjoying your show today, UM. Thanks! Hi all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm Uncle Michael:

I'll seek that out, Gaylord.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Jeff Golick:

A Very Gentle Sound was the name of my first, and last, high school band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Uncle Michael:

Marie! Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm doctorjazz:

Mixed Nuts was the name of my first(and last) High School Band (we didn't have the cojones to call ourselves Hot Nuts).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm doctorjazz:

(After that I became a sensitive acoustic guitar strummer...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Uncle Michael:

You keep at it, and the callouses will come.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm doctorjazz:

That came and went.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Rich in Washington:

Fantastic show today, UM! Been listening from my kitchetorium while cooking up an epic meal.
Avatar 2:26pm Hubig Pie:

My high school band was "Gastrointestinal and the Flu" before it was changed to "The Ruptured Cockamamies"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm Uncle Michael:

Thank you, Rich. Whatcha making?
  2:28pm βrian:

Does "kitchetorium" imply there's a studio audience? À la Galloping Gourmet?
Avatar 2:31pm still b/p:

Never had a high school band, but my buddies and I did discuss doing a rock lip sync act in monk robes at intermission in the annual school musical (for which we always were the stage & lighting crew). I remain grateful to this day -- I THANK the stars --
that our lack of initiative prevented the plan's realization, and prevented even any official proposal of it.
  2:32pm Dean:

As with many JMT records, Stefan Winter reissued the Hank Roberts on his Winter & Winter label.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm chresti:

I have a distant cousin that was called the Iceman during his football career.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm chresti:

Avatar 2:36pm burke:

Thanks for the show, and a happy weekend to all! I bet on the groundhog to beat the spread on Sunday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Uncle Michael:

Indeedly-do!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Uncle Michael:

Never bet against Phil.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Rich in Washington:

@βrian: only in my head. I host an imaginary cooking show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Handy Haversack:

Is this what Liverpool is like?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Rich in Washington:

@UM: I made something like potatoes O'Brien with rosemary picked out of our garden, then cooked eggs sunnyside up in the middle of it, with chorizo sausages on the side. Defib kit at the ready.
Avatar 2:40pm Franco Twinkie:

Thank you Michael. I gotta split early and pay my moms water bill RIGHT NOW, followed by a Thai seafood curry before the lunch rush.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Uncle Michael:

nice!
Avatar 2:40pm βrian:

I love to cook. My most recent challenge is satisfying a 6-yr-old. Anchovies, kalamata olives, and Thai fish soup have passed muster, among other things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Uncle Michael:

HURRY, Franco!
Avatar 2:41pm βrian:

I hear you can use a defib kit, in a pinch, to harden the caramel on a crème brûlée.
Avatar 2:41pm still b/p:

I gotta go to Bureau of Motor Vehicles...and I don't wannaaaaaaaa!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Uncle Michael:

You'll meet nice people! You'll make new friends!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Handy Haversack:

But can you use it to get Maud into the perfumed garden, @βrian?
Avatar 2:43pm still b/p:

I'll stand up and call out, "FMU...? Uncle Michael fans? Right....right? Yah!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm chresti:

Sounds like your 6 year old has well developed taste, Brian.
Avatar 2:44pm Roberto:

Durn, that's twangy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Uncle Michael:

Do it!!
  2:45pm dan:

Dave Swarbrick was one hell of a fiddle player, almost on the same level as Charlie Daniels.
Avatar 2:45pm Brian in UK:

@βrian what stock did you use for the soup?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm Uncle Michael:

Dan, you made milk shoot out my nose...and I'm not even drinking milk.

I got some Winter and Winter records, but foolishly passed on many BECAUSE THEY COST A BUCK MORE THAN OTHER CD'S. Talk about short sighted. (Hat Hut produced the same reaction in me, to my regret).

Love Spence!
  2:47pm dan:

@UM
What's that supposed to mean?
  2:49pm Dean:

Joseph Spence reminds me of the guitarist (or ukulele player?) who appeared frequently on LA's KPFK, an Asian(-American?) fellow, iirc, who often busked around downtown LA in the '80s, '90s. Can't remember his name...help?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Uncle Michael:

That you think more of Charlie's abilities than I do.
  2:51pm Dean:

I confess I acquired most of my W&W stuff as used records.

@UM
Listen to "The South's Gonna Do It Again" and tell me that Charlie Daniels isn't a great fiddle player.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Uncle Michael:

OK. I'll get back to you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Gaylord Fields:

I listen to "The South's Gonna Do It Again" and get nauseated. But that has nothing to do with CD's fiddling prowess or lack thereof.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm chresti:

Don't know, Dean. Sorry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Handy Haversack:

Really enjoyed the show, @Uncle Michael. Glad to have listened. Just wish the KISS covers set hadn't been while I was on the subway!
  2:55pm Dean:

Thanks, chresti.
