Avatar 9:01am fred:

Good morning Jeff and those headed out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Dave in Vermont:

it says Roscoe Mitchell but I hear Gillian Welch
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Jeff Golick:

Good afternoon, @fred! How are your walking shoes holding up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am Dave in Vermont:

ah, spoke too soon
Avatar 9:04am hyde:

  9:04am LP Stevenson:

Okay, then. Morning all!
Avatar 9:05am holland oats:

yo d:o! peeps!
Avatar 9:05am fred:

@Jeff: taking them to my cobbler for a complete revision turned out to be a rare moment of foresight. I probably should buy new ones soon though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am listener james from westwood:

I mean, an increase in the day's Gillian Welch is never bad, but still . . .
  9:08am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings, Outbounders! I’ll be back after yoga. With a vengeance!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Jeff Golick:

Much obliged, @Dave in Vermont! Yours was the heads-up I needed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Jeff Golick:

Big welcomes to you, @hyde, @LP Stevenson, @holland oats, @listener james from westwood (agreed), and a pre-yoga @Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Dave in Vermont:

i had to check that it wasn't my daughter's music connecting to my speaker which often happens around here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Jeff Golick:

"Accidentally," I"m sure, @Dave in VT.
  9:20am Listener Gregory:

Hey, Jeff. I'm glad you finally came on the air. I was about to call the fire department to do a wellness check on you.
  9:23am Mark R.:

Thank you for this nice, chill opening to your show. I slept later than usual today, and this is just right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Jeff Golick:

Appreciate the concern, @Listener Gregory! Welcome!

Hey, @Mark R.! Happy we're in sync.
  9:31am Listener Gregory:

Sadly have to leave to shovel some snow, but I will return if my heart doesn't give out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Jeff Golick:

Take it easy and slow, @LG! Levels. Shovel in levels, as needed.
  9:35am Mark R.:

I shoveled around 5 last night, threw down some salt, and shortly after that, it turned to rain, so we're good.
Avatar 9:49am hyde:

i gotta go shovel, myself. waiting until it hits forty degrees, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am doctorjazz:

Hi folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @doctorjazz!
  9:59am Listener Gregory:

Made it back! Feeling good, except for the shortness of breath, pain radiating from my chest down my left arm, sweating, etc. So, normal.
Avatar 10:01am hyde:

hmm, this is quite good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am doctorjazz:

Shoveled about 1 AM and salted (talk about putting things of until the last minute). Haven't checked yet...hopefully no more accumulations in my neck of Jersey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am doctorjazz:

Lots of 2019 music so far...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Jeff Golick:

Welcome back, @LG! Breathe easy...

Yeah, @doc...this is why I find doing a best-of roundup difficult; the year never seems to ever end.
  10:07am Listener Gregory:

Jeb Bishop is underappreciated, IMHO.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Jeff Golick:

I'd agree with that, @LG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am doctorjazz:

Definitely underappreciated by me, fine track, though, I'll try to rectify that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Jeff Golick:

Bishop comes up a lot in Vandermark-related circumstances.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am doctorjazz:

(Just ordered it...)
Avatar 10:16am coelacanth∅:

'morning Jeff, OUTies
  10:16am Dean:

Drummer Frank Rosaly also played with Vandermark. Following doctorjazz's lead...will order now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for that link, @doc -- just added to the playlist.

Goo morning, @coelacanth∅!

Welcome, @Dean!
  10:21am Listener Gregory:

Duck or Dick? I hope it's the former.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Jeff Golick:

  10:26am Dean:

Duck Baker, whose music ranges from traditional folk picking to more adventurous work like what we just heard, has a nice recital of Christmas tunes.
  10:27am Mark R.:

Very flexible trombone playing by this guy in the Westerlies. Like the tight, complex arrangement of this piece. Forigve my ignorance, who was/is Robert Henry? (I'm too lazy too google)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am doctorjazz:

Duck Baker used to also write interesting album reviews for Jazz Times (I think), which I used to enjoy reading. I first knew of him as a fingerstyle guitarist, mostly blues and older jazz styles, but he branched out quite a bit, as Dean noted.
  10:32am Mark R.:

I tried to dance to that "Dance, Dance Rock" track but it really didn't work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am doctorjazz:

That Westerlies album is so new, it's not even out yet (pre-order on Bandcamp). Did really enjoy it as well...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Jeff Golick:

@Mark R.: I want to believe it's this one: "Robert Clayton Henry (July 16, 1921 – September 8, 1981) was Mayor of Springfield, Ohio from 1966 to 1968. He was the first African-American mayor of an American city of any size" -- but I'm honestly not sure.
Avatar 10:35am Sem:

Good morning, Jeff and the OUT crowd. Late, but snow shovelling took precedence this AM, with the prospect of anofher 6 inch drop later today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am doctorjazz:

Allison Miller Boom Tic Boom were great! She'll be performing in Philly, new composition, with the band plus a tap dancer. I'm very tempted (Ars Nova Production)
  10:36am Listener Gregory:

Jeff, how do you make a song bed music?? Isn't it music already?
  10:41am Dean:

That's something! I heard Noble and Stevens in SF a few years ago with Brotzmann.
  10:42am Listener Gregory:

Also, Takase was born in 1948, so over 70. I would not have guessed that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am listener james from westwood:

Don't let organizational superfreaks like Todd-a-phonic or Belock make you think hitting year end with a ready list of best-ofs is at all required.
  10:45am Dean:

Buddy of mine sent a link to a list of free jazz recordings of the decade: https://www.freejazzblog.org/p/the-free-jazz-collectives-top-101.html
  10:45am Dean:

That is, "best" free jazz recordings, so claim the compilers of the list.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Jeff Golick:

Hi @Sem! Glad you survived to shovel again, and glad to see you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Jeff Golick:

@LG: I don't make bed music, but I gather that other DJs do, by taking a segment of song and looping it for a long while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: Thanks for that - I am a non-organizational freak.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Jeff Golick:

And just to keep rolling here: @Dean: I like that blog; they do good work.
  10:50am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, makes sense. But couldn't you also just hit "repeat" on the CD or MP3 player or something? I have no idea what technology you guys use, other than that it involves lasers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Jeff Golick:

Ok, re BEST OF 2019 lists, I like this one, by Peter Margasak, a lot:

The rest of the links are here: www.petermargasak.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Jeff Golick:

Here's another very good 2019 recap, now in progress at Bird Is the Worm (aka Dave Sumner): www.birdistheworm.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am doctorjazz:

That's quite a list, 101 best albums. (i guess if you we're keeping top 10 lists for each year, this is what you'd come up with).
Could you post the links you mentioned on air, Jeff?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am doctorjazz:

(Slow tapping by me, Thanks, Jeff!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

…finding my way OUT. Howdy there, Jeff and all!
  10:59am Listener Gregory:

I see Kuzu, I think kudzu.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Jeff Golick:

Big greets, @Granny Spicy Tuna!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Jeff Golick:

(Beware, @doc. You *will* be separated from your money.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Jeff Golick:

@Dean: that 101 decade list is overwhelming .
  11:05am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am WR:

Hello D:O ists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Jeff Golick:

@WR! Hi and how goes?
@Doug! No place like om...
  11:07am Listener Gregory:

It *sounds* more like kuzu than kudzu though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Jeff Golick:

Was Kudzu also the name of a not-very-good comic strip?
  11:09am Listener Gregory:

"Kuzu" means "lamb" in Turkish, I am informed.
Avatar 11:10am Brian in UK:

Hey Jeff 'n cool cats 'n kitties.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Jeff Golick:

Yo, @Brian in UK!
Avatar 11:12am Brian in UK:

Kuzu means terrapins testicles in Armenian. (might have made that up)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

works for me!
Avatar 11:12am fred:

Joëlle Léandre has three shows coming starting tomorrow. I'm definitely going to the last one (with Gerald Cleaver and Mat Maneri), and if the transit strike does indeed wind down the other two. Plus Olimpia Splendid on Friday and Indian music on Saturday. No shows in a while, I'm getting withdrawal symptoms
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

@fred: that sounds like a wonderful array of shows!
Avatar 11:14am hyde:

Kudzu was a not great comic strip, though the guy who did it (Doug Marlette) did win a Pulitzer for editorial cartooning. He got killed in a car crash a few years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Jeff Golick:

Whew sounds fantastic, @fred. Jealous. I've got nothing on the horizon, though we do have tickets to the "Meet the Breeds" day at the upcoming dog show, which I am looking forward to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

i'm not sure what one might call what is happening in the sounds right now, but i like and clicky star this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @hyde, thanks for that. When I did google and see it was Marlette, I felt a little bad. But I stand by my Kudzu comment.
  11:16am Listener Gregory:

These folks are not giving up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Jeff Golick:

For those digging Kuzu, they have a new record out: aerophonicrecords.bandcamp.com... -- it is one cut, twice as long as "Carried Away"
  11:19am Doug Schulkind:

This number is just spectacular.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

…and another $10 flies out of my wallet. But i'm happy!
  11:21am Listener Gregory:

It's going to be hard to follow that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

CVB can handle it! They're queer punks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

that was a stellar WFMU freeform segue
Avatar 11:24am fred:

I mentioned this because I remember winning a Joëlle Léandre CD on this show during a marathon years ago (with Maneri, at The Stone)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

Who remembers when WFMU for the super grand prize of the marathon gave away a camper van that had been owned by Camper Can Beethoven?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Jeff Golick:

LOVE that, @fred.

@DS: I do not!
Avatar 11:28am fred:

This is a great cover!
Avatar 11:28am coelacanth∅:

so weird that i never knew these guys covered this...and i realise i've never even heard this cvb album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Jeff, you're blowin' my mind! (thanks!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Doug Schulkind:

It was '88 or '89.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Jeff Golick:

Ah. I was a wee college lad at that time. Knew nothing about anything.
  11:34am Listener Gregory:

@Doug, I remember when they gave away a stuffed turtle previously owned by the Turtles, but that was long ago.
  11:34am Dean:

One year the super grand prize was a fortepiano that had been owned by Ludwig van Beethoven as a kid. That was 1788 or '89.
  11:35am Listener Gregory:

@Dean: You win!
Avatar 11:36am coelacanth∅:

i'd say the camper van beethoven album prize sounds very vaguely familiar but i might be imagining it
Avatar 11:37am fred:

Some day the prize will be Doug's first drum set, with a selection of songs from his top 100 high school bands
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am doctorjazz:

Sharrock! Great track! Great album!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Jeff Golick:

HA! Yes.
  11:38am Listener Gregory:

You are handling this masterfully, Jeff. I would have claimed technical difficulties after Kuzu and gone home. Except I guess you ARE home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

I gave away my first (and only) drum set to my nephew Arlo. He is now a professional working musician (though on trumpet and piano, so I can take only partial credit).
Avatar 11:39am coelacanth∅:

i love Sonny Sharrock and i love this track but i think this is highly derivative of a prior Manfred Mann song
  11:40am Dean:

You mean his top 100 *first* high school bands, fred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

can i just say that this moment is bliss? hearing these sounds, watching the funny and fascinating comments, sipping puerh, eating peanut butter out of the jar. I'm living the dream!!!
  11:42am Listener Gregory:

@Granny ST, yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Jeff Golick:

Elvin Jones, Pharoah Sanders, CHARNETT MOFFETT, Sonny Sharrock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Jeff Golick:

(Thanks, @LG)
Avatar 11:45am coelacanth∅:

i'm sorry -i goofed! i have this Sonny Sharrock song on a playlist along with 2 others and 3 Manfred Mann songs and i got them mixed up.
(sorry Sonny, i shouldn't have doubted you)
Avatar 11:45am fred:

@Dean: you are correct, of course
  11:47am Dean:

@coelacanth∅, Truly, I thought you were punning on the respective names of the song and the band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am WR:

Thank you Jeff, I scored a signed (Lasswell) CD copy of the Sharrock from bandcamp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Doug Schulkind:

The bliss continues on your 24-hour Drummer Stream with The Stork Club and your host Stork, live from Münster, Germany. Go have a tinkle or make a sandwich, but you don't want to miss more great Give the Drummer Radio!!

Our dear Stork will be here: wfmu.org...
  11:52am Dean:

Did Ribot also interpolate a bit of "Over the Rainbow" in the track played here?
Avatar 11:53am coelacanth∅:

haha Dean yes,yes of course. that's what i was doing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, I heard that, @Dean, or something like it. Reminded me of a Christmas carol?
  11:53am Ike:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Jeff Golick:

  11:55am Dean:

Ah, right, was "Christmas Carol."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am doctorjazz:

Thanks, Jeff!
Avatar 11:55am hyde:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

a zillion thanks, Jeff!
  11:56am Dean:

Dang, can't stick around for Stork Club. Gotta take my son to his flag football games this a.m.
Avatar 11:56am fred:

Thanks Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am listener james from westwood:

Thanks, Jeff!
  11:57am Listener Gregory:

Excellent show, Jeff. Thanks. You passed up a chance to end with Manfred Mann, though. Next time!
  11:58am Dean:

Nicholson would later work with Myra Melford...another M&M!
Avatar 11:58am coelacanth∅:

Thanks Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Jeff Golick:
