Live from the Golden Fest - Brooklyn's Spectacular Balkan Bacchanal

Hear this show now:  Pop‑up player! | Add or read comments

For generations, the Zhou from Eastern China, has played boisterous, exuberant - yet remarkably precise - horn-and-percussion music. It's music for weddings, funerals and everything in between. Now they're bringing the music to international stages, from England's legendary WOMAD Festival to Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music - where in fact they'll perform on Wednesday night February 5th. (They're also playing a daytime Lunar New Year / Chinese cultural event at Webster College in the St. Louis area on Monday and a similar evening event at Middle Tennesee State University a week from tonight, Saturday February 8th.) And - we're honored that the Zhou Family Band will make its US radio debut on WFMU!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Handy Haversack:

Another year, another failure to attend for us. Got another gig to go to in a little bit here, but it sure sounds good!
  6:07pm queems:

@handy i’d been meaning to go for 5 years. it was definitely something
Avatar 6:08pm full metal monkey:

Hi Rob and everyone out there. This sounds great.
Avatar 6:10pm dale:

is this like the touring group from the doc 'gypsy caravan?'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Rob W:

These are VERY little kids playing right now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Rob W:

But to Dale's question - er, not exactly! They're kids who learned to play East European music this past August in an annual summer folk dance / music camp held in the Catskills, upstate NY - eefc.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Handy Haversack:

YOu give us hope, @queems!
Avatar 6:15pm dale:

so these are all local-ish people.
Avatar 6:16pm slugluv1313:

hiya Rob and everyone!

these little kids are FANTASTIC!!!!
Avatar 6:16pm Jim the Poet:

Sounds great, Rob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Mr. Pumpy:

Hi, Rob. Loving the live vibes. Thank you!
  6:16pm queems:

imagine learning how to play music 5 months ago and then playing in front of a crowd this large. and also being a child
Avatar 6:17pm dale:

i lived so close to there for 14 years. and to me it was just a cheesy wedding venue commercial on late night tv.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Mr. Pumpy:

I'm loving the lumbering tempo of this song. It, along with the rhythm and melody, is making the song seem like it's on stilts. At least that's the way I see it. It is holding on...never falling down, even as it threatens to. Oh...it's over.
  6:18pm queems:

i used to live a couple blocks away from grand prospect hall, and last night was my first time going inside. it’s surprisingly beautiful, in a liberace kind of way
Avatar 6:19pm slugluv1313:

right, queems?
i mean, i remember ballet recitals when i was a kid -- but nothing like this!
@ dale -- EXACTLY! that is the appeal, SO over-the-top cheesey that you wanna get hitched *just* so you can have your wedding reception there!
Avatar 6:20pm dale:

this makes me think that every school band in america should add alcohol and dancing. things hit a rhythm that way.

slugluv - the place had a certain appeal.
  6:21pm queems:

@slugluv EXACTLY i walked in there last night and said to my bf “uhh i want to have my wedding here” and i don’t even want to have a wedding
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Bas NL:

I'm really impressed by the level of these kids!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Handy Haversack:

Heh, that's excellent, @queems.

Kate's warming up her voice at the other end of the apt., which makes for a wild addition to Mlado Selo.
Avatar 6:25pm dale:

queems. my gf and i went to city hall one day for a license. one morning the next week i said 'wanna go to city hall and get married today?' and that was the extent of it. we had a party a couple of weeks later at a bar in the east village. it was enough pomp for us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm queems:

@dale that sounds like exactly my speed
Avatar 6:28pm slugluv1313:

@ queems -- haha! yes, same here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm queems:

but also i want to be surrounded by kids playing tubas in a giant gaudy event hall
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm queems:

tuba me into matrimony
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm adampsyche:

Catskills checking in
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Handy Haversack:

"I oompah doompah."
Avatar 6:32pm dale:

queems - wasn't there a school on eastern parkway? i bet they have a junior high band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm queems:

lololol @handy
Avatar 6:32pm slugluv1313:

@ queems -- YES!
(and this is coming from one who attended countless Hungarian and Polish weddings and receptions as a kid!!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Handy Haversack:

We're off for Kate's gig. Rob W, thanks for doing this! Will catch up on the archive later. Have a good night, @queems and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm queems:

@handy enjoy! @dale LOL probably.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Smilty69:

  6:49pm Carmichael:

Heya Rob, Irene and all y’all.
Avatar 6:58pm Jim the Poet:

Rob when you get a chance do a station ID
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Rob W:

Thanks Jim - I think Irene covered the ID!
Avatar 7:12pm Marc Francis:

Loving the music! The sound? Not so much. Any chance of fixing that? I know it's live but it sounds pretty rough compared to previous years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Rob W:

If there's something specific you're hearing I can convey it but on a general level nothing seems to me that much different from the past...
Avatar 7:22pm Jim the Poet:

Vocals for this band a little overmodulated. Overall sound of this band is a little tinny.
Avatar 7:24pm Jim the Poet:

This song sounds a little better
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Smilty69:

Live feed sounds good.
  7:31pm Carmichael:

Everyone’s a critic.
Avatar 7:31pm Jim the Poet:

I liked that show The Critic with Jon Lovitz
Avatar 7:33pm Marc Francis:

@Carmichael: Sorry for caring about the sound.
Avatar 7:35pm Jim the Poet:

No, Marc, I think you were right. But it sounds better now, yes?
Avatar 7:37pm Marc Francis:

@Jim the Poet:
It does! We've turned it back up!
Avatar 7:37pm Jim the Poet:

OK cool.

  8:26pm Carmichael:

This is 2020, no one can joke. We have to be angry.
Avatar 8:26pm Jim the Poet:

Grrr
  8:27pm Carmichael:

That’s the spirit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm chresti:
