This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hiya Doc!

Should do a set based on bands named after large tractors, etc....
Avatar 7:03pm Flash Strap:

Hi NGH! that'd be a challenge for me i think
Avatar 7:04pm northguineahills:

ok, just farming/construction/mining equipment....
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

you drive a hard bargain

Hi Flash and explorers!
Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

Hi Chresti!
Avatar 7:08pm Flash Strap:

This record is so weird: "Electronic Music from ART IN SPACE. "The sound of numbers for soaking in soft dreams. Sweet moments and private notes making a rhyme into a habit. An album that creates the ultimate environment for the smoke generation. Taste it."
Avatar 7:09pm hyde:

hello!
Avatar 7:10pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hyde!
Avatar 7:12pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 7:14pm still b/p:

Head album cover says:
"Inside you will find something colorful to do with your hands while you're listening to this album."

Aaaaand, zing 'em if you got 'em, commenters.
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

legendary sidelong jam here
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

Hi b/p! not that i can't think of more colorful things to do with my hands, but it's worth noting that HEAD came with an 8-page coloring book!
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

Taste of Blues hails from Sweden, very unusual mixture of sounds here
Avatar 7:16pm hyde:

the title of that Fugs record is one of my all time favorites
Avatar 7:16pm Flash Strap:

not the first or last swedish group of the evening, interestingly enough
Avatar 7:16pm Flash Strap:

Fugs are so great like that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Passaic River Blues:

This is fantastic.
Avatar 7:17pm Flash Strap:

PBR! hello!
Avatar 7:19pm Flash Strap:

drummer on this is so crucial to its having that otherworldly kraut sound, despite the preponderance of blues& soul vamps
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm Passaic River Blues:

@Flash: word. The not-quite-Liebezeit build in the last section was tremendous!
Avatar 7:20pm still b/p:

Coloring opportunity was my guess, but 8 pages is more generous than I'd imagined.
Coulda been a little tiny Holi Festival Kit of powders, too, though that'd be more likely these days when the Holi-influenced clouds and whacks and eruptions of color are showing up everywhars.
Avatar 7:20pm Flash Strap:

exactly!
Avatar 7:21pm Flash Strap:

hard to track down the full coloring book, but I found a couple pages in discogs at least: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 7:23pm Flash Strap:

still can't believe the first guitar notes on this mutant jam are a crib from Bing: "we're having a heat wave, a tropical heat wave"
  7:28pm CC:

You could always alternate Bruce Springsteen, Graham Parker, Steve Earle and Ian Hunter songs???...(:
Avatar 7:29pm Flash Strap:

Hi CC!
Avatar 7:31pm Flash Strap:

love the art on this album so much, really perfect encapsulation of the overall mood
  7:32pm ?:

Wow that Head Tune Sativa really got me. Updating my youtube playlist^^
  7:36pm ?:

there us a "dies irae" called band also, tune called "the trip" 1970ish, a german krautrock gem, check it out - great video too
  7:37pm CC:

The first time I tripped I remember listening to Country Joe and the Fish...a song called Grace...
Avatar 7:39pm Flash Strap:

will do
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm chresti:

Finally home!
Avatar 7:40pm Flash Strap:

Country Joe has some killers, at his best (generally instrumental) he produces the platonic ideal of the psychedelic west coast sound
Avatar 7:41pm Flash Strap:

welcome home, chresti
Avatar 7:42pm Flash Strap:

Kaleidoscope looking like 15 year olds on that cover
Avatar 7:42pm hyde:

i'm a sucker for that jangly guitar
Avatar 7:43pm Flash Strap:

this whole track just has the Right Sound
Avatar 7:45pm Franco Twinkie:

Is it okay to trip out if you're wearing a plaid bathrobe and slippers?
Avatar 7:45pm Flash Strap:

Hi Franco, sounds both wise and safe honestly
Avatar 7:46pm Flash Strap:

tho personally, I like to be outfitted in action-apparel, just in case
Avatar 7:46pm Franco Twinkie:

In the psychedelic ballroom in my mind everyone is in pajamas.
Avatar 7:48pm Flash Strap:

love the Tea Company's little New York accents as they compete with a kind of Beatles affectation
  7:48pm CC:

daisy dukes and a tube top ain't bad..!..hehehe...
Avatar 7:48pm Flash Strap:

insane instrumental incoming
  7:49pm ?:

I always get the urge to be naked if tripping, I like it to be alone with my wife then :D
Avatar 7:49pm northguineahills:

Tea Company is new to me!
Avatar 7:49pm Flash Strap:

i hear ya pal, naked is good, it's gotta happen at some point or it's not a full trip
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Passaic River Blues:

@NGH: They cover "You Keep Me Hangin' On" on this record and, if memory serves, it's awesome.
Avatar 7:50pm Flash Strap:

@NGH: this is the high point of the album but it has many charms as well
Avatar 7:50pm northguineahills:

@franco:I read that as 'psychedelic bathroom'....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm chresti:

Granny Spicy Tuna has a psychedelic bathroom
Avatar 7:52pm Franco Twinkie:

Granny Spicy Tuna actually has a psychedelic bathroom. It is beyond belief.
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

sounds incredible
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm chresti:

We both saw it!
  7:53pm CC:

I remember taking the metal grate out of the oven and tying shoe strings on it and then holding them to my ears while somebody beat on it..!.. too heavy!!!!
Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

tea company serving up pure boiling primitivism at this point
Avatar 7:55pm Flash Strap:

sounds like a war, almost sounds like German Oak or something
Avatar 7:56pm northguineahills:

I love German Oak!
Avatar 7:57pm Flash Strap:

they're so heavy and good
Avatar 7:57pm Flash Strap:

did anybody ever tie a bread bag up into tight knots into a long strand and then light it on fire in the dark and watch it drip into a bucket of water while tripping???...oh man!!!
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

Fleep! Coelacanth! let's mind-explore this brain-safari together friends!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm Passaic River Blues:

I love this Guryan inordinately. Talk about a song going everywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm fleep:

CC: we called them zoomies, a dry cleaning bag works fine, too
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

@CC: sounds very smart, will have to try
Avatar 8:04pm Flash Strap:

@PBR: so good, i agree. might even be my fave over Sunday Morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm chresti:

Sounds toxic, lets do it!
Avatar 8:05pm Franco Twinkie:

I use to lay in puddles while I was tripping.
  8:05pm CC:

hehehe...yeah...joop plop, jooop plop!!!...hahaha
Avatar 8:07pm hyde:

@CC haha, i did that plastic bag thing when i was a kid. probably inhaled toxic fumes, but it was cool
  8:07pm CC:

I always loved seeing the clouds and the stars in three dimension!!!
Avatar 8:07pm hyde:

@CC also i wasnt tripping, because i was like 8
Avatar 8:08pm Flash Strap:

no excuse
Avatar 8:08pm hyde:

i made up for it later
Avatar 8:08pm Flash Strap:

great texas psych sound on this Lemon Fog cut
Avatar 8:09pm Franco Twinkie:

Pre-drugs we would make candle powered gas bags that would get serious elevation then come crashing down to earth.
Avatar 8:10pm Flash Strap:

all-time weirdo Turtles track. god they're incredible
  8:11pm CC:

Frank Zappa movie 200 Motels is primo!!!
Avatar 8:11pm Flash Strap:

@CC: is this in 200 motels? I don't remember that flick very well, it's been ages
  8:12pm ?:

the turtles track was new to me, nice one!
  8:12pm Dean:

First time I've seen Nik Raicevik (aka Pascal) on a playlist! DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS RECORD IF YOU ARE STONED!
Avatar 8:13pm Flash Strap:

Hi Dean! not even my first time out with Raicevik actually but I really am overdue to check out the Pascal LPs
Avatar 8:13pm Little Danny:

Hey hey hello all
Avatar 8:13pm Franco Twinkie:

I saw Flo and Eddie a couple of times when they were backed up by The Mothers minus Frank.
Avatar 8:14pm Flash Strap:

Hi LD! how goes it pal?
Avatar 8:14pm Flash Strap:

this Texas group famous for having a very young Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top
  8:14pm Dean:

I have one or two, but no stickers, alas. Bonkers. Reminds me of those great Cosmic Jokers albums.
  8:15pm CC:

Yeah... Flo & Eddie made me think about that movie...
Avatar 8:15pm Little Danny:

Good! Finally prepared my shit in advance. For once I'm not scrambling this evening. Knock on wood...
Avatar 8:16pm Flash Strap:

@Dean: almost had some Cosmic Jokers in the mix for tonight, love those covers & a classic krautrock analogue to psychsploitation
  8:18pm Dean:

Indeed. Then there's Yatha Sidhra's Meditation Mass, some Agitation Free, early Guru Guru and Grobschnitt...
Avatar 8:19pm Franco Twinkie:

Hey Dean! As luck would have it I found myself at the CVS right next to Moffets Pie Shoppe the other day. I had been there previously and was not impressed, but the second time around both Chresti and I agreed that it was a better than average chicken pot pie.
  8:20pm CC:

Franko... how's it hanging man?!?... nice to see you I haven't seen you in awhile hope everything is well..!?!
Avatar 8:20pm Little Danny:

Definitely one of the better anonymous psychsploitation freakouts, the Mesmerizing Eye. Still need a cleaner copy over here.
Avatar 8:21pm Franco Twinkie:

I'm okay CC, thanks for asking.
Avatar 8:21pm Flash Strap:

yeah, this one's actually pretty good. a lot of them are so weak
  8:21pm Dean:

I don't know Moffets! Arcadia? Vicinity of the old Bahuka? Dang, I miss them parts.
Avatar 8:22pm Flash Strap:

the secret is really just going all-out with the sound effects. if you're gonna try it, go all the way
  8:22pm CC:

I'm always a little low and to the left myself...hehehe
Avatar 8:23pm hyde:

another one for the typewriter music show
Avatar 8:24pm coelacanth∅:

so, and maybe this will be obvious tomorrow Evan, but how did you get the hallucinogens to come through the internet -and into our bloodstreams just by listening?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm chresti:

psychsploitation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Passaic River Blues:

@hyde: That is such a good idea for a show theme! I probably would need to be high to listen, but, man, great idea.
  8:25pm Dean:

Fast forward to 2003, Wolfgang Mitterer's Radio Fractal/Beat Music.
Avatar 8:25pm Flash Strap:

@C: the trick is, you have to look at the playlist blotter sheet
  8:25pm Dean:

You can't spell Explorer's Room without L.S.D.

Oh, wait, sure you can.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm chresti:

For the telephone show..
Avatar 8:26pm hyde:

@PRB as with most of my ideas, it's a little half baked
Avatar 8:26pm Franco Twinkie:

Yeah, Arcadia. It was on Merrills list. It's a place that could only exist in the SGV, or maybe West Virginia. Little House On The Prairie mixed with Twin Peaks.
Avatar 8:26pm Flash Strap:

morse spells --- ? anyone
  8:27pm CC:

hehehe...Flash... it made an inkblot blotter in my mind!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm fleep:

Mickeys and Goofys, tiny postage stamps of fun
Avatar 8:28pm coelacanth∅:

ah. that explains why i'm just mildly tripping whereas some folks here seem to be tripping their brains out.
Avatar 8:28pm Little Danny:

@Flash re: @8:22 - absolutely
  8:28pm Dean:

Oh, right. Good for MS!

Seems to me, @FS, you need to include "...rope sex..." but I can't conjure the rest of it.
  8:30pm CC:

I'll tell you a real trippy tune if you like bongo drums...Self Portrait by Chuck Mangione!!!
Avatar 8:31pm Flash Strap:

weird outfit, the Vampires, don't know much beyond this but we have an all-Indian musical lineup recording for RAJ in South Africa
Avatar 8:32pm Flash Strap:

great cover art too, really out of a weird dream with that sleeve design
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm chresti:

I am seeing trails
  8:34pm Dean:

Pacific Chrest?
  8:34pm CC:

you can't go wrong with a nice flute!!!
Avatar 8:36pm Flash Strap:

the Underground with a more lackluster shot at psychsploitation - one of it's greatest strengths is just the sheer dissonance between presentation and content
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm chresti:

Yes, the Electric Crest Toothpaste trail.
Avatar 8:37pm coelacanth∅:

"an oral hygiene ritual that will change your perspective"
Avatar 8:38pm Franco Twinkie:

This sounds like a Lowrey home organ set on ultra-violet.
Avatar 8:38pm Little Danny:

Yeah, less freeform than souped-up studio-psychedelic versions of charting hits and some nominal originals. Similar to the Fire Escape LP on GNP-Cresendo...
Avatar 8:38pm quinn:

oooo hay-lo i'm just tuning in... speaking of trips... last time i was in the desert i listened to one of your archived shows on headphones and it was tooooo much. jungle circus scenes. too much.
  8:39pm Dean:

Toothpaste. The Colgateway drug to harder stuff.
  8:39pm CC:

Happy trails!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm fleep:

Flossing. A national tragedy.
Avatar 8:40pm coelacanth∅:

haha Dean!
Avatar 8:40pm coelacanth∅:

...twice a day

(or as recommended by your dentist)
  8:42pm Dean:

I had a dentist who advised absolutely no flossing! Nobody knows how to do it right, and they cause injury in the process. I'm evolved to a water flosser.
Avatar 8:42pm northguineahills:

Thanks, Evan, I'm off!
  8:42pm Dean:

^I've
  8:43pm CC:

The Pleasant Pheasant is also a groovy song by Billy Cobham!!!...way trippy!!!
Avatar 8:44pm Franco Twinkie:

That Jimmy Campbell album cover is really something. The very idea of encountering clown mimes in the forest while you are wrecked on acid is an interesting proposition.
Avatar 8:45pm coelacanth∅:

the last dentist i saw (?) strongly recommended i don't use my hydroflosser. said there's no proof blah blah blah...
he's obviously brainwashed.
  8:46pm Dean:

Reminded me of the first Fat Mattress LP cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Passaic River Blues:

@Franco: the raven atop the stump and a black-robed and hooded figure in the far left background (Death?) just complete the batshit tableau. Love it.
  8:46pm Dean:

Yeah, well, the dentist who told me that was flossed out on acid.
Avatar 8:50pm still b/p:

You never know how something routine, such as those organ licks of Greensleeves, might hit the heightened mind condition. When we were tripping on something or other outside someone's lakeside cottage one evening 40-something years ago, a fella, who maybe wasn't tripping, suddenly had a trumpet, stood ramrod straight and earnestly and assertively played the theme from the Godfather. We were uproariously responsive to these unexpected stimulus.
Avatar 8:50pm still b/p:

"stimuli"
Avatar 8:51pm coelacanth∅:

i have a sneaky suspicion that clown mimes in the woods whilst tripping wouldn't disturb me as much as it would whilst not tripping
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

here's an ear to lend!
  8:51pm Dean:

Er, the theme from "The Godfather" is "something routine"? I can't even remember the melody.
Avatar 8:51pm Flash Strap:

Hi Qunn! sounds wild! might not have been my most desert-friendly show
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

adios NGH!
Avatar 8:52pm quinn:

Oh, it wasn't your fault! A balloon unexpectedly tumbling across the ground also threw me for a loop.
  8:52pm CC:

Just don't send in the clowns!!!...hehehe...
Avatar 8:53pm Flash Strap:

so true, b/p. i remember tripping once and switching from psych music to Gene Pitney and being in ecstasy, instant relief
  8:53pm CC:

this kind of reminds me of that animal song where all the rich people in the castle died???
Avatar 8:55pm coelacanth∅:

i get the theme from the godfather lodged in my head occasionally. a few times/year.
i've never even seen the movie (but a tiny bit of, as a child) but it's a great melody.
Avatar 8:56pm Flash Strap:

hey Nino Rota doesn't do bad music
Avatar 8:57pm Flash Strap:

@quinn: well, that'll happen, yeah
Avatar 8:57pm quinn:

piano ending of layla from goodfellas > godfather theme FIGHT ME
Avatar 8:58pm Flash Strap:

i disagree but refuse battle in this case
Avatar 9:00pm quinn:

fair
Avatar 9:00pm Flash Strap:

but i do feel it's better used in the film (where i like it) than in the song (which I refuse to like)
Avatar 9:01pm quinn:

i don't like the actual song either. and it's weird how its just tacked on to the end of it like that.
Avatar 9:02pm quinn:

*but* i would listen to an hour loop of just the ending to the song, and probably have
Avatar 9:02pm Flash Strap:

it's a great coda! i don't think clapton wrote it which explains why it's good
Avatar 9:04pm Franco Twinkie:

This show is to entertaining to be distracted with making dinner, so I just popped a Trader Joe's Spanakopitain the oven. Now, where were we?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm ParUbi:

Hey there Flash Strap and everyone
Avatar 9:05pm coelacanth∅:

apparently Rita Coolage composed it, essentially, and her then husband stole it. Clapton didn't know how to end layla so they tacked that on.
Avatar 9:05pm Flash Strap:

this seems to be an example of psychsploitation where the musicians are sincere freaks & the label is just hoping to cash in with it

Okay, everybody knows about the Spirit/Led Zepplin kerfuffle, but did you know they also 'borrowed' from the British folk singer Anne Briggs?
Avatar 9:21pm Little Danny:

Love this Harumi so much.

Instrumentation just made me flash on Ariel Kalma
  9:22pm CC:

ok... so that must be a extemporaneously at your desire???
Avatar 9:23pm Flash Strap:

@LD: totally, it's a really unusual piece! very exotic and new age - the flipside is a more conventional psych groove, but with Harumi's parents speaking for 25 minutes in Japanese. what a special record
Avatar 9:24pm coelacanth∅:

it's called stealing, and they stole from many people
being influenced by or even using a song or melody is fine; but i don't think it's fine when they take full writing credit for it, when they know they didn't write it.
thieves.

@CC: indeed. it is all at my desire. the desirers room
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Passaic River Blues:

@Little Danny: Harumi is amazing. In July 2017, Irwin aired an episode of Tom Wilson's 1968 Music Factory show featuring a Harumi interview: wfmu.org...
Avatar 9:25pm Flash Strap:

@PBR: i gotta check that out

Some might say...'We must give ourselves away'!!!
Avatar 9:28pm coelacanth∅:

(but -was it Anne Briggs or was it Bert Jansch [?] -or both?)
Avatar 9:28pm Flash Strap:

being critical of them requires articulating that they are actually abusing IP law by employing it in a ruthless way - not that they are being cool scofflaws, which is in fact cool. if they were cool they would record what they want and just not claim it as their IP. i know there are problems with that position, but it is mine
Avatar 9:29pm Flash Strap:

lotta pregnant dog talk incoming
Avatar 9:29pm Franco Twinkie:

Let say both to be on the safe side. Anne is still alive and I'm sure she could use a little extra scratch.

not sure i have a problem with that Evan! but in the case of Robert Plant and Jimmy Page -and the others i mentioned -they did give themselves full dredit for composing songs they obviously didn't write. it's greedy and selfish.
Avatar 9:33pm Flash Strap:

@C: yeah we agree
  9:34pm CC:

I saw a news piece the other day where this family adopted a three-legged dog!!!... that dog looks so happy I couldn't believe it!!

...there's one thing you can say positive about Clapton (and i'm not known for saying positive things about Clapton!) is that when he (same goes for Jack Bruce, the heart and brains behind cream) did someone else's song, and they did that a lot, they always gave credit where credit was due.
-even when the writer was long gone and there was no one to fight it.
Avatar 9:37pm Little Danny:

Have you heard the Rosko With The John Berberian Ensemble LP, Flash? Nice counterpart to this Harumi
Avatar 9:38pm Flash Strap:

no! i've never heard of it even! will check it out

Light as a feather can be!!! good show!!

I tend toward the other end of the spectrum. I think it's meaningless to claim authorship. So, when I refer to "Virginia Woolf," I mean those texts we attribute to her. I frankly don't care whether or not she wrote them.

I say, fuck John Locke!

And you can quote me. But please attribute properly.
