Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Oh man..!.. my brother-in-law... God rest his soul... lived and breathed this music!!!
Avatar 10:08pm northguineahills:

LD, you missed telling Doug, "This Bud is for you!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm Matt from New Orleans:

This is from the soundtrack to a semi-documentary movie directed by Shirley Clarke in the early 60s. Powerful look at life in Harlem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm Matt from New Orleans:

I was referring to the Dizzy track
Avatar 10:11pm Little Danny:

Great movie, Matt. One I've actually seen.
Avatar 10:11pm Little Danny:

NGH: I'm the worst at wordplay and puns. It takes me 5 minutes to come up with something and then the moment has passed...

Just remember...you can't live other people's lives... you can only imagine and be empathetic/sympathetic at what their experience might be!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm doctorjazz:

Awww, missed the Bebop, but here for Merle Saunders.
Hey LD and flame throwers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm Franco Twinkie:

Durned short songs keeping me outta the mix, pant pant
Avatar 10:28pm Little Danny:

Can any of ya sleuths nail down the guitarist on this Billy Boy track? You'll be showered with appreciation in soon-ish mic break
  10:29pm CC:

Billy Cobham's longest live version of Shabazz might give you a chance to talk...hehehe
  10:31pm JakeGould:

@LittleDanny: Seems to be… Mighty Joe Young. You’re welcome! Unless I am 100% wrong and then I just tried and failed. www.45cat.com...
Avatar 10:31pm Little Danny:

CC: Longer songs next set for sure! Eternal scramble over here
Avatar 10:32pm northguineahills:

@ParUbi: Actually I had a third phone round on Tuesday (wasn't expecting it), tomorrow will be the fourth round , face-to-face.

Knowing Deleuze, I prefer just to be the Other....

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm doctorjazz:

Mighty Joe Young turned up*a Google search for Billy Boy guitar on that track.
Avatar 10:33pm northguineahills:

@CC:was Cobham's version recorded in a palace?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm doctorjazz:

According to this link...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm JtotheK:

Mighty Joe Young has some nice 45s ... Hard Times and also Voodoo Dust.
Avatar 10:35pm Little Danny:

thanks Doc! Sounds about right. I'll run with that!
Avatar 10:35pm Little Danny:

(And thanks also Jason!!!)
  10:35pm JakeGould:

Hey! I posted that first… :/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm Matt from New Orleans:

Jake was first Danny
  10:36pm JakeGould:

Who’s Jason?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm doctorjazz:

Looks like @jakegould best me to it, got it in 2 minutes earlier!
Avatar 10:37pm Little Danny:

Oof, right, Matt! THANK YOU JAKE! (And sorry for the initial snub.)
  10:37pm CC:

North Guinea Hills... I don't know if it's the longest but I like the version that's on the album Shabazz..

  10:37pm JakeGould:

You’re welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm doctorjazz:

Some good vibes to quell my battered soul, truly helpful at this moment...sigh....
Avatar 10:39pm northguineahills:

w/ ya doctorjazz….
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm JtotheK:

Dominic Frontiere did a soundtrack to a movie I've never seen 'On Any Sunday' which has Carol Kaye on bass. I haven't listened to it in a while, but it might be that "Stretchin' Out" is the track to check for.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm WR:

It may have been a mis-speak, but Merle Saunders is keyboard player.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Matt from New Orleans:

Solid documentary by Bruce Brown of Endless Summer renown about motorcycle racing with Steve McQueen participating as a racer.
  10:49pm CC:

So West Coast!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm doctorjazz:

Saunders had a band with Jerry Garcia (Jerry's side gig).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm JtotheK:

Wait Danny - so this 'Cool World' movie you are talking about is NOT the movie with Brad Pitt and Kim Basinger?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Matt from New Orleans:

No it is not that atrocity
Avatar 10:51pm Little Danny:

WR: Oh fuck that was not a mis-speak, WR, I honestly thought Saunders was a guitarist. I was wondering why the organ player on that side. Thank you! (Though also wondering now WHO the guitar player on that track was.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm doctorjazz:

Looks this Leisure Birds track.
  10:51pm ?:

Those Saunders/Garcia records are real good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm doctorjazz:

Kinda gothic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm doctorjazz:

?, I think so too.
  10:52pm ? = Dean:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm JtotheK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm doctorjazz:

Don't agree worry Dean all that often...
  10:55pm Dean:

I disagree, doctorjazz. I think we mostly agree.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Franco Twinkie:

I had soup this morning, but it was a very serious affair. No one was laughing, especially me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Matt from New Orleans:

I read it quickly as Laughing Soap Dish. The correct name maybe makes more sense.
Avatar 10:57pm Little Danny:

Sometimes the soup eats YOU, Franco
Avatar 10:58pm Little Danny:

Barely though! Love it Matt.
Avatar 10:58pm Little Danny:

DEANNN. Hey bud.
  11:00pm CC:

To eat and to be eaten..R.D. Laing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm Franco Twinkie:

I saw/heard Merl Saunders twice when he was in The Legion Of Mary. He had a very big sound that really filled the room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm WR:

I'm about to try find that Shirley Clarke movie. I have seen her Ornette film and an familiar with The Connection but have yet to see The Cool World. Didn't know it has such a primo soundtrack so will move it up higher on the list.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm chresti:

Nice selection LD!
  11:06pm CC:

There is a war between the ones who say there is a war and the ones who say that there isn't..!..etc... Leonard Cohen
  11:06pm Dean:

Every day on my travels to and from work by bus I pass the former site of Berkeley's Keystone, where the Saunders/Garcia records were recorded. It's now a nondescript apartment/condo building.
Avatar 11:07pm Little Danny:

Absolutely my pleasure, thank you Chresti
Avatar 11:11pm northguineahills:

@franco: Now I want menudo while listening to menudo.Unfortunately, the local Mexi joint only has menudo on Saturdays, so I have to wait. (comment was posted 10 mins ago, but my laptop crashed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm Franco Twinkie:

Ain't that the way it goes Dean? The Fox Theater in Venice where I saw said band is now a discount furniture store. God only knows what The Ash Grove is now. Most likely something high end and NOT funky.
Avatar 11:12pm northguineahills:

I have the first ocho album!
  11:14pm Dean:

Buddy of mine up here is writing a history of LA subcultures/counter-cultures during the '60s, focusing heavily on said Ash Grove.

According to Google Maps, it's still a performance space: https://goo.gl/maps/jiyagEhATn5kGngu8
Avatar 11:15pm Little Danny:

Good man, NGH. Their first three are so nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm Matt from New Orleans:

Danny I’ve been digging into the Merl Saunders track and I’m going to guess it was Jimmy Daniels on guitar
  11:15pm Dean:

Shoot, it's not far from where the old Bodhi Tree sat.

Yeah, Franco, that's the way it goes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm Franco Twinkie:

I seriously don't understand the menudo on weekends only prohibition, NGH, but I am lucky to have two places nearby that have it everyday.
  11:17pm Dean:

We have one here, too. Menudo and posole.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm Franco Twinkie:

Soup is the order of the day right now.
  11:19pm Dean:

Is it possible the justification is that 1) folks drink excessively on Fridays and Saturdays, 2) menudo relieves hangovers, and so 3) menudo is served on Saturdays and Sundays?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm Matt from New Orleans:

It also takes a long ass time to cook
Avatar 11:21pm Little Danny:

Thanks Matt! I'll try to remember Jimmy Daniels for next mic set. New name to me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm Matt from New Orleans:

Me too. He doesn’t really register much anywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm Matt from New Orleans:

I hope you got lucky on a dig on the Willie Wright or bought the reissue. Crazy expensive 45.
  11:25pm CC:

sometimes you just got to say bye-bye!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm WR:

Now I want posole. Shit, good place near me is open late but already eaten too much tonight. Wonder how early they start serving lunch tomorrow . . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean, regarding yesterdays list of good comfort food in the SGV, I would add Howies Ranch Market, which is just up the street from us. Today, venturing out for juice from TJ's I stopped there first and walked away with a big container of beef stroganoff. Fixed me up...for a minute.
Avatar 11:27pm northguineahills:

*drool*….. posole!
  11:30pm Dean:

Eerie. I made a prime rib, two ribs, way too much for my wife and me on New Years Eve, so I had to re-purpose the leftovers. One night I did a beef stroganoff, the leftovers of which I had today for lunch.

I credit Merrill Schindler with promoting SGV for restaurants even back in the '90s, but that article obviously left out lots of good spots. If I were in the LA area again, I'd make a point to spend quality time in your 'hood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm Franco Twinkie:

I made posole on New Years Eve. But I brought the corn and tomatillos from home because one year I spent a whole afternoon driving around the East Bay looking for what I take for granted around here.
  11:34pm CC:

We love you Danny!!!
  11:34pm Dean:

Berkeley Bowl woulda satisfied your corn and tomatillo needs, but I know what you mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm Matt from New Orleans:

Thanks Danny. I’ve enjoyed the show but putting the phone down. I will continue listening. Have a great night everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm Franco Twinkie:

Strangely The Berkeley Bowl was the one place in Berkeley I did not go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm JtotheK:

that Curtis Blandon was new to me . . . terrific!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm Franco Twinkie:

i liked the old Berkeley Bowl which always seemed like a chaotic mess with stuff all over the floor.
  11:39pm Dean:

There are now two Berkeley Bowls: the original on Shattuck and the latest addition on Heinz in West Berkeley, our go-to. I remain impressed with BBW, but I couldn't find coconut milk there a week ago.
Avatar 11:40pm Little Danny:

Love you CC, and love y'all
Avatar 11:41pm Little Danny:

It's a really good slept-on 45, Jason. Shows up for less than a twenty if you're patient
Avatar 11:45pm northguineahills:

Tasty, Dean! I'm still working on my aptitude for cooking meat in cuisine
  11:48pm Dean:

I'm a meat eater, no question, but I would like to avoid meat. It's harder when I'm cooking for a family not inclined to experiment. One reason it's harder is that they serve as an excuse for me to eat meat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm Franco Twinkie:

This Dodo is real nice. My head is tipping.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm Franco Twinkie:

I'm sure meat is going to be one of my coffin nails.
  11:53pm Dean:

Naw, you'll choke on a carrot.
  11:53pm CC:

Hold on!!!...
Avatar 11:55pm northguineahills:

@Dean: I eat meat maybe once or twice a week.

Thanks a million, LD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm WR:

Where did that history of jazz come from? Wow never heard this before. Interesting how he includes Liberace along with standard greats.
  11:55pm CC:

Jeremy just rememberd that this song played off of the movie Notebook???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm Franco Twinkie:

Time to get flat. Thank you Danny. Good night folks.
