I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Welcome, my dear listenerds. Glad to have you all here to suffer together.
  12:03pm Rickwaukee:

This is a banger
Avatar 12:06pm Mayuko:

I know it's morning for some of you but i hope you are all equipped with beer. In a proper karaoke bar manner.
Avatar 12:06pm fred:

Will there be a sequel with 100% Finnish and Japanese noise?
Avatar 12:07pm Sem:

Shredding like mad ++!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

fistpumping into the space! howdy, Mayuko and headbangers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Dropof Goldensun:

Perfect day for torture! I'm at work hungover. Yesterday was by B'day so I might have eaten and drank too much last night!
  12:13pm Rickwaukee:

More Summer Than Human
  12:13pm rw:

Yikes
Avatar 12:13pm Mayuko:

@fred We're listening to stuff that are available in karaoke bars in Japan & Finland only !!!!!!!!!!!!! No "GOOD TASTE IN MUSIC" today!
Avatar 12:14pm Mayuko:

@rw exactly.
Avatar 12:14pm Sem:

The Finnish translates into "summer street."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Dropof Goldensun:

Perfect day for Summer In the City
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm tmoyo:

Thank you! It's all good!
  12:20pm JosephB:

Hello Mayuko and all! Happy Belated, Dropof! Hey rw!
  12:21pm rw:

Joe!
  12:22pm rw:

I need the lyrics if you expect me to sing along.
  12:23pm Mark R:

How thoughtful of Lordi to dig a hole in the yard for me. That'll save me a lot of work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hello, vertigo gang. I Dug a Hole in the Yard for You certainly sounds ominous.
  12:23pm JosephB:

Ahh, Lordi. I'm all in favor of more bands dressing up like monsters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Dropof Goldensun:

This would make a great wedding song.
  12:25pm Ike:

Does Supercar qualify for this? If so, got any Supercar?
Avatar 12:26pm Sem:

You know, FfHP, they used to say about family: can't live with them, can't bury them in the backyard...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Dropof Goldensun:

Thanks JosephB
  12:28pm Rickwaukee:

This has a catchy melody
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm ParUbi:

Just tuning in. Hey, Mayuko and everyone
  12:36pm Rickwaukee:

Local independent station used to have a Mong music show - they have their traditional that is one thing - but then they have schlock modern stuff that is similar to this croony stuff
  12:39pm P-90:

Listening. Enjoying. Hi Mayuko!
  12:40pm JosephB:

@rickwaukee 91.7 wmse?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Dave in Vermont:

here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Dropof Goldensun:

I'm still here. Barely. hahaha
Avatar 12:42pm fred:

A few months ago I was talking with a friend about similarities between Circle and Boris. Both prolific bands who have explored different genres, sometimes close to the line between earnest and ridiculous, but without any insufferable ironic pose
  12:42pm Rickwaukee:

@JosphB that's it yes Was on I think Sundays 7AM
  12:43pm Rickwaukee:

I found the traditional stuff to be beautiful and hypnotic
  12:45pm rw:

Weirdly, or maybe not so weirdly I'm having trouble distinguishing the Japanese from the Finnish. Is it the cheese or is it something deeper?
  12:46pm JosephB:

@rickwaukee I miss that station. I'll check out that show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Webhamster Henry:

Single Again is very DX7y!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Mayuko and all
Avatar 12:48pm Mayuko:

@rw I am too!!!!!!!!!!!!
  12:50pm rw:

Are the languages THAT similar? It's kind of freaking me out.
Avatar 12:50pm Mayuko:

No, the language is not similar at all. which is the most confusing thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  12:52pm P-90:

@rw: to English-speaking ears the vowel sounds and some of the rhythms of the two languages can sound very similar.
Avatar 12:52pm Mayuko:

Welcome, ken, Mark R, Ike, coel and henry! & Belated hi to Dave, P-90, and ParUbi!!

Joe B! Have you been to karaoke in Japan?
  12:53pm rw:

Either way I seem to prefer the pop cheese to the metal cheese.

P-90, that's how it's seeming to me. Just totally unexpected!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm ParUbi:

The phonemes are similar though, right? So that's why they sound similar...
Avatar 12:53pm Mayuko:

@P-90 yeah, sounds of the words are very clear in both languages, that's probably what it is?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm coelacanth∅:

- and belated Welcome back Mayuko... i checked in last week but, as this week, i am working and not fully here -unfortunately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm ParUbi:

I found a paper about it! pdfs.semanticscholar.org...
  12:56pm JosephB:

@Mayuko Yes, many times! And here in LA too! Do you have a favorite song to sing at karaoke? Pixies are usually my go-to, but maybe I should expand my horizons and sing something less cool next time.
  12:57pm JosephB:

Maybe I should learn this Unicorn song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm ParUbi:

Ehh... a book
  12:58pm rw:

Joe Black
Avatar 12:58pm fred:

@ParUbi: more like a PhD thesis?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm ParUbi:

Does look like a dissertation, but without the usual introductory spiel
Avatar 1:02pm Mayuko:

@ParUbi this explains a bit of my confusion. I wonder Toshiko also could explain for me where our love for this particular kind of cheesy melody is coming from!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Dropof Goldensun:

Webhamster Henry I just dug out my old DX7 a few weeks ago.
Avatar 1:02pm fred:

@ParUbi: The tedious "state of the art" kowtowing to potential jury members is missing as well. So maybe not a dissertation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Dropof Goldensun:

Wow, I thought it was just me with the whole language thing going on.
Avatar 1:05pm Mayuko:

Sorry, I was busy singing along with サザンオールスターズ.
  1:07pm rw:

Next time we need a bouncing ball.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Dropof Goldensun:

OK, now unfortunately I can understand the words to this song.
Avatar 1:09pm Mayuko:

@JoeB yes, you supposed to be singing no cool stuff at karaoke. I love Unicorn, you should def try! Many good karaoke tunes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm coelacanth∅:

there are bouncing balls here but they squeak and the dogs will intercept them before you finish a verse
  1:09pm rw:

Okay, next question, Mayuko, where the heck did you FIND this stuff???
  1:10pm rw:

Haha! Hey coelacanth!
Avatar 1:10pm northguineahills:

Leningrad cowboys!!! ( I love those movies!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm tmoyo:

I remember this Leningrad Cowboys movie!

Speaking of karaoke, I also remember being blown away seeing Sheila B singing Akina Nakamori's 少女A with dance moves. 3,4 years back at the live streaming of the marathon finale.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm coelacanth∅:

Dropof what are they saying? something as profound as their album title i presume?
Avatar 1:11pm northguineahills:

(I guess you're still on a Finnish kick..:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm coelacanth∅:

howdy rw!
  1:11pm rw:

Alright, one more. The album is called We Cum From Brooklyn?? WTF?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm coelacanth∅:

cheese or not i wish i could turn this up here. i'm not home and my levels are barely audible.
Avatar 1:14pm fred:

@ngh: I only managed to listen to the first half of the Amirtha Kidambi and Lea Bertucci set on Dan's show, but I loved it (had to stop because screaming kids downstairs interfered with the interview)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm redkayak:

Happy 2020 all :)
  1:16pm rw:

Oh, man, we're veering into some particularly stinky cheese here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm raszzyy (Sweden):

Happy Friends with my 'melodramatic tango obsessed neighbours' show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm chresti:

This sounds like "Oh Darling"
Avatar 1:18pm Mayuko:

@tmoyo Yeah! It's actually the Japanese, Finns, and Sheila B who share this LOVE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm coelacanth∅:

yup
Avatar 1:18pm fred:

@rw: but probably easy to pull off at a karaoke bar
  1:18pm rw:

The Pää Kii, I mean. So far Elephant Kashimashi is pretty great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm coelacanth∅:

back atcha redkayak
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm redkayak:

@coelacanth - Ahoy there :)
  1:19pm rw:

fred, agreed!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm coelacanth∅:

this would be delicious on a rosemary & cracked pepper triscuit
  1:21pm Rickwaukee:

@JosephB if you're still here, Mong Radio is no longer on the schedule :-(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Dropof Goldensun:

I had a repair guy here working on a fridge. He didn't say anything about the music blasting but I'm sure he was wondering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm coelacanth∅:

yeah i really meant that for the track before; this is great and better and better
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm coelacanth∅:

(while i try to figure out how to stop a clothes washer from walking around the room)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm raszzyy (Sweden):

They will tango everywhere :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm chresti:

I wouldn't mind some melodramatic tango
  1:25pm JosephB:

@rickwaukee that's a shame
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Michael 98145:

Good day, Mayuko. Comrades.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Dropof Goldensun:

Drunken Japanese people are the worst! haha JUST KIDDING!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Michael 98145:

I enjoy hearing your stories.
  1:34pm Rickwaukee:

Finns never know who they might have to ask for a ride home through the cold and snow
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm redkayak:

Present ;)
Avatar 1:36pm Mayuko:

@Dropof haha! I guess repair people are used to hearing all sorts of weird things at people's homes though!
Avatar 1:37pm Mayuko:

Hi Michael 98145! Thank you!!! Glad you're all still here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  1:37pm Ivan:

I’m here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Dropof Goldensun:

@Mayuko I never thought about that but you're right. Can you imagine not only what they hear but what they see?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm tmoyo:

オフコース。of course this has to be in the list!!!!
Avatar 1:39pm fred:

I don't know why, but French repair guys always order me to turn it off. Others sometimes even ask me about the station, I've even asked a few about a band they liked and more often than not found a playlist with it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm tmoyo:

singing along
Avatar 1:41pm Mayuko:

@tmoyo so am i!!! 小田和正 is the bomb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm tmoyo:

this sounds a bit like Hideki Saijo
Avatar 1:53pm fred:

@Michael: That's why they're striking while they can get away with it (which I support, though don't enjoy). Reports say there are more buses and subways. Yet I haven't seen one bus on my way from work this week within Paris, and had to walk all the way home yesterday. Some "improvement"

Avatar 1:55pm Sem:

Thx, Mayuko. Been a riot, see you and all next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm WR:

Just now tuning in. As a person who know a very small amount of Japanese language and no Finnish I admit that some Finnish songs I think it is Japanese that I don't understand. Noticed it last week during the song by Apulanta.
Avatar 1:55pm fred:

@Sem: so far so good, got them fully repaired just before it started. Not much time for reading though
  1:55pm JosephB:

All this sentimentality reminds me that I still need to torture myself with 2019's Uta Kohaku Gassen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Dropof Goldensun:

Have a great week everyone!
Avatar 1:56pm northguineahills:

and since Finland didn't become independent following the dissolution of the Russian Empire in 1918, it make sense one of its first foreign policy directives would to declare friendship w/ Japan.

These Magokoro Brothers are really hitting a nerve for me

When you played Apulanta I was sure it was Japanese pop punk band. My understanding of Japanese is limited so it was not until I checked the name of the artist and Googled them that I realized they are Fins. Relistening to them closely I still heard great similarity to Japanese. Maybe would not pass any linguistic analysis but to untrained or unsuspecting listener definitely strong similarity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33am WR:

LOL, just noticed that I made same comment about Apulanta when was listening to last part of show as it was broadcast. Listening now from the beginning and it holds very true. Need to read that essay @ParUbi found.
