Tech trends in 2020 with Station Manager Ken Freedman

Tech trends:

• Surveillance everywhere, I mean everywhere: Kohler puts an Alexa-enabled smart speaker in a showerhead (The Verge, Jan 3)

• "Reasonable" (?) responses to surveillance: How we survive the surveillance apocalypse (Washington Post, Dec 31): "The first time I used Jumbo, I was shocked that it identified a half-dozen privacy settings for Facebook and Google that even I had missed. Now the app goes in on a regular basis and deletes my Alexa recordings, Google data and Twitter posts, reducing the data trail I leave behind me."

• Students as vulnerable population under tech control: Colleges are turning students' phones into surveillance machines (Washington Post, Dec 24): "We're adults. Do we really need to be tracked?" ... "Why is this necessary? How does this benefit us? … And is it just going to keep progressing until we're micromanaged every second of the day?"

• Decoupling the Internet. From Axios (Jan 6, 2020): "The globalist triumphalism of the '90s and 2000s has given way to Trump-era protectionism and a splintering of the global internet into three distinct regions — the U.S., Europe and China — with fundamentally different legal regimes. China is where the ideal of internet freedom lost out to a government that now successfully monitors its citizens' doings and controls their speech. It has built its own domestic software and services industry that rival the U.S.-led Big Tech giants. China is also where much of our tech hardware, including most iPhones, get made. That keeps China and the U.S. interdependent — for now."

(And from Mike Gallagher in the NYT piece below: "The internet as we know it is largely American, but by 2030 the Chinese Communist Party will have built an entirely new internet where Beijing attempts to monopolize key supply chains, stifle free speech and hoard personal data. The menace is already real. The C.C.P. is increasingly exporting its model abroad. Huawei and ZTE seek to build the world’s networks; WeChat and TikTok play a growing role in online discourse; Chinese cryptocurrencies could one day threaten the dollar.")

• Climate change due to tech: Edward Snowden on the world in 2030 (NYT, Dec 26): "Electricity usage by data centers is enormous and expanding, threatening to top 10 percent of global electricity consumption within the next decade and to produce roughly five times the CO2 emissions of all current global air travel. As more power is required to cool these data centers, the warmer the planet will become."

The Real Trouble With Silicon Valley (Atlantic, Jan/Feb 2020): "Perhaps it’s time to reconsider the wisdom of placing such a big bet on Silicon Valley delivering the United States from its rusting present to a glimmering future. Too much American ingenuity is chasing problems that simply don’t matter. The web was once celebrated as a democratizing force and a means of escaping institutional control. But Silicon Valley’s most profitable business model has been to construct expansive systems for tracking and manipulating human behavior."

We've spent the decade letting our tech define us. It's out of control (Guardian, Dec 29)

The Tech That Will Invade Our Lives in 2020 (NYT, Jan 1)

Hi, can we hear some info about TechtoHazMat?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Daddy Hernlet:

Been reading a bunch about increasing drone surveillance and I'm not liking what I'm reading.
Avatar 6:05pm herb.nyc:

Major tech trends. Major Major is interested.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm ultradamno:

I have a positive spin: Amazon's Ring will come in handy when The Purge becomes a real thing.

@ngh there was a similar Googly bad guy in the last season of Elementary.
Avatar 6:18pm dale:

the golden globes made me realize actresses are poor - very few of them wore blouses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm ultradamno:

Ricky Gervais saying something I agree with is the quickest way for me to start questioning my position.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Ike:

@NGH, I've seen part 1 and I'm not impressed. Evil tech types are not a new kind of villain for Dr. Who and that terrible showrunner writer is still pretty lame, though better than last year. Or as Elizabeth Sandifer puts it, "not so much competent as non-incompetent, television stitched together by someone who has seen enough of it to know where all the pieces are supposed to go, but who has at best a hazy understanding of why they go where they do or what their purpose is." Looking forward to all of the upcoming episodes NOT written by that dingbat.
  6:21pm melinda:

Howdy SM Ken!
  6:22pm iiibeat:

The evolution of technology is basically a separate evolution from that of human psychology and morality . . Just because technology changes. . . It doesn't necessarily change tendencies of brutality and ignorance established throughout human history and thought! Thought and morality can change only via a change in thought and morality . . Technology can facilitate changes but it cannot make the changes toward peace and benevolence.

Are there legal loopholes for killing people who take selfies on busy sidewalks, subway stairs, or in front of famous artworks? Or at least very firm nudging?
Avatar 6:26pm dale:

how about the alexa toilet that can report to your doctor the shape and content of your stool? that HAS to be on the horizon...
  6:27pm iiibeat:

I really need to send my email to Ken and Olivia . . Of course
. I need to write it first . .
Avatar 6:27pm herb.nyc:

So cute, ken said "selfie pictures of themselves". So did an ex-CIA guy, about that dead fellow Suleimani, in Saturday NYTimes.
  6:27pm P-90:

@dale- in Japan they’ve had toilets for many years that do all that and more...
Avatar 6:28pm dale:

people in 1919 had that fear as well. maybe. but probably not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Handy Haversack:

I hope Andy didn't hear that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Webhamster Henry:

@dale I made a iPhone clinical trial app's Bristol stool reporting control.
  6:29pm yippie:

silver is better than gold
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm ultradamno:

The scam I keep hearing about lately, I mentioned this elsewhere not long ago, is a variation of the Nigerian Prince scam where you get an email from a midrange celebrity (Juliette Lewis and Alexander Skarsgaard are the ones I've heard about) claiming to be in a financial jam and needing money (and somehow you made the list of people for them to contact).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Phillippe Bastille:

I'm going to start dating my checks using the Mayan calendar.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm annie:

DDG is horrible
  6:35pm convoy_pt2:

How do you get brave to default to duckduckgo when doing a search? My version defaults to google!!! I cant find the option to change it
Avatar 6:36pm coelacanth∅:

duckduckgo is definitely getting better; and is much better for images. good for youboob videos because you can watch the video without actually going to the youboob site.
gobble is still better for translations, sometimes for definitions...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Phillippe Bastille:

I like Dogpile for images
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@convoy_pt2 - What browser are you using? (Firefox / Opera / Apple / etc. ?)
Avatar 6:38pm BigCat:

hey — WHERE DO I GET A FLIP PHONE THAT ONLY TEXTS & CALLS?

(serious)

AND DOES IT TAKE A SIMS CARD?
Avatar 6:39pm Ergophobic Erwin:

Mark and Ken: I've used DuckDuckGo for years now, and have taken advantage of its "bangs" feature to search Google. My sense is that DDG makes "bangs" searches incapable of being tracked. Am I mistaken in this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Phillippe Bastille:

@bigCat bunches of them here: www.ebay.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm ultradamno:

"The best firms advertise the least" - Mark E. Smith, I guess the other end is the morally deteriorating firms start advertising incrementally.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Sounds like we're going to have a whole bunch of different countries meddling in the 2020 election this fall.
Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Pete from Bloomfield:

There are dams up the Hudson that, if they failed suddenly, would have catastrophic effects on NYC and communities downstream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Carmichael:

@Phillippe, what is a "check"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm ultradamno:

...but were the Iranians and Sheldon Adelson ever really going to be friends?
Avatar 6:45pm coelacanth∅:

hmmm, i could use $80,000,000.00
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm tim from champaign (now washington):

  6:47pm iiibeat:

I think that the strength of an argument against the willful and careless offerings of data to the big-tech spy mechanisms knowing that you or whoever has nothing to hide . . We know that there are insidious and vile tendencies that humans in general are capable of employing and . . We don't know what happens to the innocent and willful data once it is created!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hackers would like to break into the electrical grid. Imagine if they jacked up everybody's electricity to 220V instead of 110V? Lots of burned out TVs. Or if they were to knock out the Nakatomi Building?
  6:49pm iiibeat:

The U.S. government controls our speech via a system of classification of information!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm melinda:

Ecosia seems legit, they fund different reforestation projects around the world: info.ecosia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm tim from champaign (now washington):

But Ken, what about Khlam?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Phillippe Bastille:

Saw this AWS commercial during the games yesterday that referred to Baker Mayfield "reading the defense like a children's book". Then they talk about Baker throwing a pass with about a 5% chance of success. Tells me that either Baker Mayfield's reading comprehension isn't great or Amazon doesn't think about what they say. Probably both.
Avatar 6:50pm dale:

everyone knows 220 is just two 110 hot legs - no way to do that ken from hp without sending rogue electricians into everyone's circuit breaker box.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Carmichael:

Buy just think, every circuit breaker on earth flipping off simultaneously ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Carmichael:

Yes, that drone is a true story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 6:53pm BigCat:

thank you @Phillippe_Bastille !
  6:54pm ignatatus666:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm ultradamno:

I saw that deep fakes made into a plot element in a recent Blacklist episode (Red tested a subordinate by faking a rival to offer to betray him)
