Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Teddy Wilson might as well be *my* request. Happy New Year, UM!

  12:35pm Dean:

The secret, coelacanth∅, is to make sure the check is addressed to the CEO, who then proceeds to open the envelope and read the memo line before cashing the check. Once, the CEO resigned, due I'm sure to my sharp criticism.

Fuck microphones.
Avatar 12:35pm Franco Twinkie:

If I dont hear my request soon I might have to move the car.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm fleep:

...once when i was sent a threatening letter from central hudson for being a few weeks late with my $75.00 electric bill i wrote a full letter apologising for being responsible for several entire families of their employees not being able to put food on their tables and that i'm considering becoming a monk in hopes of repenting my selfish way.
  12:45pm chresti ->SF:

We got to meet granny yesterday-much fun was had
  12:46pm frenchee:

Granny Spicy Tuna! WOOOO.
  12:46pm Dean:

I've had good luck with genuine, not snarky, but still very heated, emphatic letters of complaint to various vendors (rental car companies, airlines, convents, etc.). Typically, they listen and try to address the problem.

Just kidding about convents, though.
  12:49pm Dean:

Man, Poco deserves more airtime. Thanks, whoever requested this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Uncle Michael:

And it sounds like we have...a live version! Whee!

@Dan: Maybe I should try genuine, not snarky, but still very heated letters of complaint for THE WORST MOTEL IN ROCKY MOUNT, NC--where the O-man and I spent NYE. Onwards, people!
Avatar 12:52pm Franco Twinkie:

When I was young and even more irresponsible than I am now, I would often come home and either the phone or the electric had been cut. I t finally penetrated my thick head that I would always lose that battle.
Avatar 12:52pm Brian in UK:

Hello Uncle and keen requesters.
Liked the first Poco album cover.

  1:09pm Dean:

It was my pleasure. I'll repeat the story I mentioned elsewhere. After you dropped me off at Trader Joe's I ran into a friend in line to whom I bragged, "I just spent a couple fun hours with a WFMU DJ." The woman in front of him turned and asked, "There's a WFMU DJ in town?!"
Avatar 1:10pm Franco Twinkie:

This gives me hope, Michael.
  1:10pm Dean:

You *have* to know "Brimful of Asha"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Lane Gray:

We're good. I'm driving team with Mrs. Gray who usually is driving at this time and i'm asleep. The New Year's holiday screwed up Fedex Ground and our run disappeared, so we're at home.
Also look on youtube for David Hartley, who does a lot of good country steel. His instrumental version of Dylan's To Make you Feel My Love was part of our wedding

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Lane Gray:

I still think the name of this album was wrong. It's a Lloyd Green record with Charlie as vocalist
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Stanley:

Friends Viccy have hitched back to our place in the hills. Two lifts one of which I was riding on a bunch of logs on the back of a pick up.
Still got it in me!

howard devoto is such a showoff: this song's title is a more accurate translation of "Notes From Underground"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

ooh, that would be a good theme for a nerdy show— songs based on books most people don't/cant read

Elton John’s weird cover of Spirit In The Sky

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Stanley:

Hi Brian. Happy New Year bro'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

i would request Kate Bush's "Flower of the Mountain"
  1:40pm Dean:

This set is hitting the spot.

Reading: a four day respite in Portland, OR, over Christmas revived my ambition to read more and better. I've made headway into Dickens' Our Mutual Friend, sampled a good deal of Robert Browning's poetry, and aim to continue in this vein for a while, dipping now and then into relevant literary history.

the single mix. i think it's the same as the mix on my k-tell compilation (except the k-tell comp cuts it nearly in 1/2)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Dean: cool! My partner has been reading Mark Twain stories to me as i'm getting ready to go to sleep. Can't say they're exactly relaxing, but i sure do howl with laughter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

chresti: Quilty. No blinking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Gaylord Fields:

Hi, UM! That "Spirit in the Sky" certainly sounded like the original hit version to these ears, likely just remixed/remastered.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm Lane Gray:

It's not yet three months old, and limited to 65 mph
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm chresti:

Aww..send Quilty a head scratch for me!
Avatar 1:45pm Brian in UK:

Has there ever been a Saliva label? It would be on the tip of most peoples tongue.
  1:46pm Dean:

Definitely hope to return to Twain during the coming year, GST! But also, believe it or not, Pilgrim's Progress and Malory's Morte d'Arthur. Portland is famous for Powell's (where I picked up the Browning), but I also visited Melville Books on Alberta, a very tiny store with a marvelous selection of used, fairly priced books. That's where I got the Dickens. And then I walked across the street to the Irish pub to read a bit over a pint. Also made it to Beacon Sound, a very cool record store in PDX. I left with a Xenakis Persepolis reissue on LP, an old America album, and Michael Muller's recent LP on the Beacon Sound label.
Avatar 1:46pm coelacanth∅:

i aimed at requesting songs/artists i've never heard on wfmu, but are not especially "obscure".

Avatar 1:51pm Brian in UK:

@Scяaps. Nice.Guess Black is the key word. How are you keeping, my friend?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm brainiac:

Sometimes I'm in the mood to listen to nothing but Noel Coward and Cole Porter.
Avatar 2:08pm hyde:

I think my fave rhyming couplet is "where a ghost and a prince meet, and everyone ends up mincemeat" from that's entertainment
  2:08pm Dean:

Not sure Porter would have delivered "All you did was wreck my bed, And in the morning kick me in the head" as poignantly as Rod, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Scяaps:

Love Carmen McRae
Avatar 2:10pm Brian in UK:

Dean, times were different though Rod did have a sense of humour back then.

Avatar 2:20pm Brian in UK:

Stanley, are you getting outside of some rum?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Scяaps:

I don't care about the Lyres, but I was there for Volcano Suns at CBGB, and they were meh. They were one of those bands that refused to play their older stuff at all. I still champion all of their records, though

  2:44pm Dean:

Honest to goddess, I did not think myself cool at the time, Brian in UK. More likely we were thinking, "We better get our homework done," and we knew damn well that wasn't cool.
