Options January 2, 2020: "Cool and Strange Music Magazine Issue #1 as a Setlist" (Vol. 1)
In celebration of the first 10 issues of Cool and Strange Music Magazine now available in PDF form from https://oglio.com/. Today, I’ll be using Issue #1 (from Spring 1996) as a set list. Page by page and picture by picture, I'll be playing music by each artist mentioned or printed in chronological order (If I HAVE them. A couple were unattainable to find in time.) This theme will probably be revisited over the course of other shows, as it will not all fit into one hour. Most of these LPs were found at thrift stores over the past three decades, but some came from the actual record collection of magazine creator and friend Dana Countryman. To start I'll be playing the actual copy of Anna Russell's "Into Darkest Africa" that was scanned for the cover art :) (The playlist photo of this, comes from discogs however.)

Hello computer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Jan Turkenburg:

I'm awaiting a guest who might or might not turn up for dinner.. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Rich in Washington:

I'm a huge fan of Cool and Strange Music! It was my musical internet before there was an internet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Mr Otis F Odder:

BC! Exciting. C&SM Issue Shows!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Jan Turkenburg:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Mr Otis F Odder:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Rich in Washington:

Dana made the first ten or so issues available digitally recently, so I was able to completely fill in the gaps in my collection finally!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Alina Brennaman:

Hi everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Mr Otis F Odder:

B.C. - This may come in handy if you don't have this link. It's the old table list of issues and content within, www.danacountryman.com...

I put that together in 2002. ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Rich in Washington:

Hi Alina! Happy new year!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Mr Otis F Odder:

Rich, those PDF issues are amazing.

Hi Alina!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Rich in Washington:

My pal Toby/Dr. Zomb interviews Marcy Tigner in issue 6.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Mr Otis F Odder:

The covers with the track info is great Val! More visuals to go with the music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Mr Otis F Odder:

That's a great article Rich! I treasure my Trombone album. I need help, right??! Nah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm ARB:

Thanks for playing Esquivel! cheering up music in the morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Rich in Washington:

I finally bought her trombone record. It's every bit as weird as her puppet records, imo. Trombone is such a weird solo instrument. I just wish I had enough trombone material if only so I could do a show entitled 'tromboners!'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Mr Otis F Odder:

Excellent Bob Thompson cut and ranks as one of my favs by Bob.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Rich in Washington:

Wow. I've never seen that record. What a delightful cover as well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Mr Otis F Odder:

Rich, I think you are the only other soul I know with the Trombone record. Yes! Tromboners. Ha ha.
Avatar 12:16pm BC Sterrett:

Hey everyone :) Let me know if there are any issues with levels
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm ARB:

Rich I'll be sending you every trombone track I come across so you can make that show happen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Mr Otis F Odder:

Sundazed did a nice reissue of this Bob Thompson LP a good decade or so ago. Recommended, should be on Spotify as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Mr Otis F Odder:

Rich, me too now. You have your street crew for PR, your Tromboners workin' for ya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Rich in Washington:

ARB!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm ARB:

You have the Voodoo Trombone Quartet I'm assuming?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Rich in Washington:

A friend and I were once musing how there are so many 1920s records that had this obligatory trombone glissando in them. Once you notice it, you start hearing it all the time. It was the bass drop of the early 20th century.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm ARB:

There's something about the slide, the lapsteel/slide guitar and the trumpet both make me feel kind of melty
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Mr Otis F Odder:

Let's bring it back. Trombone's giving more bottom to bluetooth speakers in the 2020s!
Avatar 12:20pm BC Sterrett:

Playing some earlier lesser know tracks by the early LPs of these artists
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Mr Otis F Odder:

My kinda smooth too... slack and slide.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Rich in Washington:

yeah, I'm not familiar with either Fascinato's or Elliot's work outside of their more famous LPs. This is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Mr Otis F Odder:

I see that BC. That Fascinato and Dean Elliot you don't hear often (both on my want list) opposed to Elliot's Zounds (which I still have the copy YOU gave me when you visited, Reno maybe... or could've been Seattle or Montreal)! Time flies huh!
Avatar 12:22pm VaL:

Never thought I'd hear chopsticks on the radio! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Rich in Washington:

Pre-pop music era Ferrante and Teicher are just amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Mr Otis F Odder:

Worn down my 1950s F&T prepared piano works. Gems.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Jan Turkenburg:

I came to the screen for this version of chopsticks. Hi everybody!
Avatar 12:25pm BC Sterrett:

HI Jan, Hi Otis, Hi Rich, Hi ARB
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Mr Otis F Odder:

This Esquivel was a staple in my pink VW bug in the mid-1990s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Jan Turkenburg:

I've got a version by the Dutch KRO Orchestra, that has some elements of F enT's version. I wonder which one was first.
  12:26pm diarrhea pearlman:

ah! nothing like wordless vocals....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Mr Otis F Odder:

Here is a quick link to the PDF issues 1-10,

Avatar 12:28pm BC Sterrett:

Thanks Otis :)
Avatar 12:30pm BC Sterrett:

Skipping The World Vision Korean Orphan Choir because I don't have it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Rich in Washington:

I love organ and whistling records!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Rich in Washington:

Fred Lowery records remind me of my high school art teacher who would frequently disappear and emerge later reeking of cigarette smoke and scotch and would whistle like that really loudly.
Avatar 12:33pm BC Sterrett:

lol Rich!
Avatar 12:33pm BC Sterrett:

Playing the whole chant! (It's the same on both sides of the LP)
Avatar 12:34pm VaL:

I love when I recognize songs from old movies & now learning the background story of it :)
  12:36pm Poppleprincess:

Next time I have a plant, we’ll cuddle up and listen to this every day...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Rich in Washington:

I don't have that nerve. I had it taken out with my appendix.
Avatar 12:37pm radioactivechickenheads:

Hi BC!
Avatar 12:37pm BC Sterrett:

LOL Hi Annie
Avatar 12:38pm BC Sterrett:

Hey Aaron!
Avatar 12:38pm VaL:

Welcome Poppelprincess!
Avatar 12:38pm BC Sterrett:

This is my fave part of the chant
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Mr Otis F Odder:

'moist and wet with your sap'. So many song titles for aspiring noise bands.
Avatar 12:39pm VaL:

LOL'd "'moist and wet with your sap'. So many song titles for aspiring noise bands."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Mr Otis F Odder:

This record always cracks me up and strangely makes me wanna run and hug my plants.
Avatar 12:40pm BC Sterrett:

Using DJ skills I was taught guesting on Friendly Persuasion :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Rich in Washington:

I just came off a nearly two week holiday to see that the lone plant in my office was thriving in my absence. I should take a vacation more often.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Mr Otis F Odder:

We did a few fun radio/online projects years back for sure! SO much fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Rich in Washington:

This show is fantastic, BC!
Avatar 12:42pm BC Sterrett:

Thanks Rich :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Rich in Washington:

How many 'music for plants' type records are there, anyway?
Avatar 12:43pm BC Sterrett:

This is the first time I've played the ENTIRE Chant for Your Plants on the air.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Mr Otis F Odder:

You could be the first DJ ever to play the complete Chant for your Plants. There should be an award.
Avatar 12:43pm BC Sterrett:

lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Mr Otis F Odder:

Rich, "Plant Talk" is another fav in this realm.
Avatar 12:44pm BC Sterrett:

Mellow show today
Avatar 12:44pm BC Sterrett:

I think I have around 15 - 18 Plant records?
Avatar 12:45pm BC Sterrett:

Who knows?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Rich in Washington:

Aw. I just gave a copy of this to my daughter and son-in-law. This is one of those records that I can't help but buy anytime I find it in the wild and then gift to someone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Mr Otis F Odder:

There are 3 succulent plants here that were listening.
Avatar 12:47pm VaL:

Wow! What a vibrato!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Rich in Washington:

Mrs. Miller reminds me so much of my maternal grandmother.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm ARB:

my vines were definitely creeping closer to the speakers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Mr Otis F Odder:

You really get to know a person when you gift the love of Elva.
Avatar 12:49pm BC Sterrett:

Talked about for it's cover, but here it is, more music for your plants. Who else is gonna play it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Rich in Washington:

If you listen closely, there are subliminal voices going "GROW, YOU BASTARDS! GROW!!!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Mr Otis F Odder:

Too bad Valli and The Four Seasons were not on this instead. Great for the cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Rich in Washington:

Whoever put this out could've repackaged the same selections as Music For Your Pet Rock.
  12:52pm zzm:

hi, browsed thru your past play lists seemed it'd fit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Mr Otis F Odder:

I would buy that Rich for a buck, and frame the cover.
Avatar 12:54pm Martinibomb:

Hey BC
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Rich in Washington:

Great show, BC! Can't wait for next week!

Avatar 1:00pm WR:

OMG! Forgot to tune in, will listen back from the archive.
  5:47pm Dana Countryman:

Wow-- talk about a blast from the past! I truly did not know what I was doing, when I put the first issue of the magazine together. It was done on my first computer with minimal design software. This first issue was xeroxed, as I couldn't yet afford offset printing. It was hand-collated and hand-stapled together by myself, my best friend Keith and my dad. It was truly a " 'zine" to start with, then became an actual magazine once we had national distribution, advertisers and subscribers.
Anyway, this is a cool concept show, so thanks BC Sterret!
Dana Countryman
  6:27pm Blair Sterrett:

Dana, we are eternally grateful for your publication, for your contribution in bringing this music to light, the respect to the artists involved and for bringing to so many of us friends together :)
