Options January 2, 2020: Part VII & VIII : The Rings of Saturn by W.G. Sebald
Memories of pre-war Berlin with Michael Hamburger, a beetle swimming shore to shore in a darkened well, Irish country houses and a eerie trip to Orfond Ness. I find myself trapped in the Munich airport thinking of Sebald's connection with the animals throughout The Rings of Saturn.

The universe loved it so much it put a bunch of rings on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm ParUbi:

I'm all caught up with the reading! Haven't been able to listen to these live since the book started.
Avatar 6:02pm northguineahills:

So, apparently. if you eat all of your kids, the universe puts a ring on it....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Greetings, tourists and ringleader Adriene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm ParUbi:

I'm still wondering about that mysterious military site that was only reopened in 1993
Swag For Life Member 6:03pm adriene:

Hey all, thanks for listening and reading. For anyone reading: Any scenes in the book (so far) standing out to you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm ultradamno:

A Hungry Man dinner i.ytimg.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm ParUbi:

Michael Hamburger and Anne's dream
Avatar 6:06pm northguineahills:

Jesse Kaminsky' Neighbors' Noise on GTDS stream on WFMU plays a lot of radio aporee. A good place to find sound walks and field recording....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm ParUbi:

I read his translation of Hölderlin in a seminar back in the day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm ParUbi:

Oh, also the mysterious Shingle Street site. What happened there?
Avatar 6:08pm northguineahills:

@ultradamno: jejeje! (reir en voz alto)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm ParUbi:

Finally, a general question: It seems that Sebald's writings hover between fiction and nonfiction. Which elements are fictional? That ambiguity, I guess, is part of the work of the text.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm ParUbi:

Haha, he had to drink that Cherry Coke at that small town store. Hilarious scene.
  6:13pm choggie:

and remember kids, the kindling temperature of Cherry Coke is 462 degrees Fahrenheit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm ParUbi:

(I'll stop now-- compensating for missing the last 4 or 5 shows)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I've been attending a martial arts class the last few months and listening en route. No class today, so I ordered a copy from the library system. Will do some catching up with help of the archives in the near future.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

northguineahills: sitting here with Franco Twinkie and chresti wondering "what's for dinner!?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm ParUbi:

(Right, it's like his long lost spiritual brother. Better, his double.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Ken From Hyde Park:

... and if I don't like it, I'll kick the book swiftly across the room. :-)
Avatar 6:17pm dale:

i thought i heard henry kissenger in there....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm ParUbi:

It's worth it! Doesn't have a conventional plot at all, though. Sustained meditations on place, free association, and dreams.
Swag For Life Member 6:18pm adriene:

@ParUbi Sebald talks about forging some of the pictures in the book and using fictions within the non-fiction in this short segment, you might find it interesting: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 6:18pm northguineahills:

@GST: Either chorizo/refried beans/seranos//eggs (spices) tacos or tamales....,but my brothers want me to join them for drinks, so, that may curtail that. Tomorrow, I'm making udon soup (w/ tofu and seaweed, etc)
Avatar 6:18pm dale:

i stand by my assumption that rick steves is a pot head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Carmichael:

Agreed, Dale.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

northguineahills:we'll be right over!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm ParUbi:

Thanks, @Adriene. Memory is such a huge part of this, I wonder if the forgery is meant to reflect the shifting unreliability of memory...
Swag For Life Member 6:23pm adriene:

In putting the show together I've been able to variety a few fictions, but they really blend in with everything else!
Avatar 6:26pm dale:

carmichael - i think it's wonderful if he get's it past american public media or pbs or whomever.
Avatar 6:26pm northguineahills:

I miss Berlin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm ParUbi:

Narration seems to inevitably simplify and thus fictionalize
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm ultradamno:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm ultradamno:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm ParUbi:

I'm fascinated with the way he links the booming sugar trade to inflated prices at art auctions
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Terence McKenna pointedly noted slavery had been abolished until refined sugar. As a Drug - there is nothing as consequential or damaging as sugar.
  6:37pm tak:

it's good for ya
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm ParUbi:

"I think that fiction writing which does not acknowledge the uncertainty of the narrator himself is a form of imposture which I find very, very difficult to take. Any form of authorial writing where the narrator sets himself up as stagehand and director and judge and executor in a text, I find somehow unacceptable. I cannot bear to read books of this kind."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm common:

Good eve
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm ParUbi:

Guess I'll be checking out Thomas Bernhard
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm ParUbi:
