Sorry, hyde, I got confused and read your comment backward.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm fred:

Good afternoon Doug and drummers. Nice to be able to listen to this show again (I can't listen from work these days)
Avatar 12:02pm Gina Bacon:

Morning!!! (It's still morning here)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Doug Schulkind:

I'm honored to have you listening, fred! Rise and shine, Gina Bacon! Are you back home (from being back home)?
Avatar 12:08pm coelacanth∅:

Greetings Doug, Drummers and other Lovers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Doug Schulkind:

Herbie Harper on trombone. He played with Benny Goodman, Stan Kenton, and others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Doug Schulkind:

@coelacanth∅
Love to love you, baby!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Jeff Golick:

That was like leading off for Barry Bonds. Take it away, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Doug Schulkind:

Famous Hollywood arranger Marty Paich is on piano here.

Hurray bonus drumminwithDoug,
  12:11pm chresti : phone:

Hello-on the way to sf
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
You waltzed into third with a stand-up triple. The ball actually hit above the fence and bounced back into play. The ump refused to overturn the call.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm fleep:

Greetings from staying put LA

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Doug Schulkind:

dutchtheo! chresti! fleep! doctorjazz! So many wonderfuls!
  12:13pm Mark R:

Nice to hear you on a Sunday, Doug. Only was able to catch the end of your show Friday, so this makes up for it. Al Cohn's tones are pretty hip, if you ask me (and you didn't!)
  12:14pm bigplanetnoise:

SomedayDrummerSome!!! Morning everyone!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Doug Schulkind:

Great to have you along for the ride, Mark R!

Yow! bigplanetnoise is here, ya'll!
Avatar 12:16pm hyde:

if Doug is Barry Bonds, does that mean this show is juiced
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Doug Schulkind:

Oh boy is this show juiced! (Especially with cranberries, for urinary tract health.)
  12:18pm Mark R:

If juicing the show adds a little excitement for the fans, I say bring on the juice. You don't think Symphony Sid was juiced? Or Big Tom Donahue? Doug Schulkind did not invent juicing shows, I assure you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm melinda:

Hi Doug and everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm fred:

@hyde:I don't think Doug's cap size has increased over the years, probably decreased since the time of that picture
  12:19pm Mark R:

I've got the feeling Bobby Timmons joints all moved in rhythm just walking to the corner store.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Doug Schulkind:

Hi hi hi, melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm WR:

Sticking with the GTD stream. Clifford Jordan!
  12:20pm Mark R:

Speaking of cap size, do you think C.C.'s hat was a size too big, the way it fit over his ears all funny like that?
  12:25pm Mark R:

Bennie Green, not to be confused with the fine pianist of more recent vintage.
  12:25pm ?:

Howdy from Cape Cod, sez Stork!! Wish I could hang in the chatty chat space, but gotta go do the family stuff - Thanks, Dougie - -MY SHOW NEVER SOUNDED SO GOOD!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Doug Schulkind:

  12:44pm spodiodi:

the drummer stream just keeps getting better
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Doug Schulkind:

BOOM!

@melinda
Kinda head-spinning, I agree.

@spodiodi
Big Planet Noise is one of the greatest radio shows I've ever heard. Having it join the Drummer Stream is an absolute thrill.

Now Miles has switched to flugelhorn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm fred:

As long as Miles isn't switching to the metric system, we should be safe
  12:53pm bigplanetnoise:

Thank you, Doug! ❤️

some other names to drop...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm fred:

Gene Frenkle on cowbell?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Doug Schulkind:

His solo is coming up, fred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Doug Schulkind:

George Duvivier is on bass here. (Scott La Faro sits in on the other tracks on the album.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm WR:

This track made me wonder about some details of John Lewis being so supportive with Ornette and group when they came to NYC and I was thinking, someone should ask.... and then realizing that none of the players are still with us, having to shift to I hope it is documented somewhere....
Avatar 1:14pm hyde:

i listened to a lot of MJQ when i was in high school, but not so much since. a revisit sounds maybe worth a shot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Doug Schulkind:

Here's the complete lineup for this "Abstractions":

Ornette Coleman (as), Jim Hall (g), Alvin Brehm (b), Scott LaFaro (b), Sticks Evans (d), The Contemporary String Quartet: Charles Libove (vi), Roland Vamos, (vi) ; Harry Zaratzian (vio); Joseph Tekula (ce)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm Doug Schulkind:

@WR
Really interesting to read about those musicians who were receptive to Ornette's original residency in NYC and those who weren't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm WR:

Give the string player some, seems to me there were several violinists who did step up to participate in these and several other sessions who brought more than just by the hour union readers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Doug Schulkind:

@WR
I'm surprised not to see Selwart Clarke (viola) and Kermit Moore (cello) who both must've appeared on 10,000 sessions in the 1960s and beyond.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Doug Schulkind:

Here's the lineup for "Notions":

John Lewis (p), Eric Dolphy (as, fl), Benny Golson (ts), Jimmy Giuffre (bs), Freddie Hubbard (t), Phil Woods (cl), Harold Jones (fl), Jim Hall (g), Richard Davis (b), George Duvivier (b), Connie Kay (d)
Avatar 1:21pm hyde:

that's kind of a strong lineup
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Doug Schulkind:

I have to say, this entire John Lewis retrospective was inspired by a recent Facebook post by Mr. Big Planet Noise—Bob Irwin. He posted a cover of the John Lewis LP Animal Dance, and it sent me down the rabbit hole.

Thank you, Bob Irwin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Doug Schulkind:

We'll hear from Animal Dance in a just a bit...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Doug Schulkind:

Nice to hear Lewis actually playing piano here and not just composing/arranging.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Doug Schulkind:

You will hear more Ornette Coleman next, but not playing. Just composing.
  1:26pm bigplanetnoise:

Absolutely!! Great album covers are always inspirational!!
  1:28pm Mark R:

Svend is an overlooked gem. I have a really nice record he made with David Grisman back in the 80s. Keeping gypsy jazz alive long after Django and Stephane had passed away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Doug Schulkind:

Yes, Bob, but in this case it was your post of the album cover that was inspirational.
Avatar 1:37pm Jeff Moore:

Good morning, Doug! You and all this great music are forcing me to be disloyal to Jonesy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm WR:

Somehow when I got all the Atlantic jazz albums I could eat in 71/72 I didn't see either of these two JL albums, Encounters nor Animal Dance. Makes we wonder if they were out of print at that time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Moore
Your exquisite show yesterday, filling in for Gina Bacon, put me in the perfect mood for today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Doug Schulkind:

Yup. More Dolphy. Never. Enough. Dolphy.
  1:47pm Gina B:

Thank you so much for filling in yesterday, Jeff!
Avatar 1:47pm Jeff Moore:

@Doug: <heart>
Avatar 1:50pm Jeff Moore:

@Gina B: it was an honor!
  1:51pm bigplanetnoise:

  1:52pm Gina B:

Thank you, Jeff! ❤️
  1:52pm Gina B:

Thanks, Doug!! So happy to be #25!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm WR:

Doug, I can't believe you are using Johnny Hodges as you bed music. Don't worry I'll get along somehow...
Avatar 1:54pm hyde:

i heart this record
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Doug Schulkind:

@WR
I feel enormous guilt about all of my music beds. Just who the hell do I think I am to talk over these masters? (Seriously. I struggle with this.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm fred:

I hope the drummer stream will get to the point where people in other time zones start filing the 3-6am time slots. These are my favorites on the main stream, but with the time difference, these could hold good weirdness with a different accent
Avatar 1:55pm Jeff Moore:

Doug said "Massachusetts" – I think because that's where our sleeveless pal Stork is holidaying.

Who else here tends to hear the word Massachusetts in their head as pronounced by Eva Gabor, the result of all those years watching Green Acres?

Anyone? Just me?
Avatar 1:57pm hyde:

i don't hear Massachusetts like that, but i'm a native here. if i meet anyone named Oliver, though....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Doug Schulkind:

@fred
I like the way you think, Sir.

@Jeff Moore
I rather think I sound more like Zsa Zsa, but that just me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Let the power of love drag you away!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Doug Schulkind:

EVERYBODY. SAY. LOVE.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm fred:

Totally missed the cue there and sprawled over the floor. I do love Max Roach though

Good afternoon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Doug Schulkind:

Joseph DéJean on guitar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm Doug Schulkind:

Good day, good Ike!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm Doug Schulkind:

On Give the Drummer Some two days ago, I played the obscure Billy Paul vocal version of this instrumental number by D.B. Shrier.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Doug Schulkind:

Lifted from the Philly Jazz Time Records Facebook page:

"In April of 1967, the D.B.Shrier Quartet recorded a live performance at CCP (Community College of Philadelphia)
which was then located at 34 S. 11th street in downtown Philadelphia, before moving to its current location of 17th & Spring Garden Street.
Consisting of D.B.Shrier - tenor sax, Mike Michaels – piano, Tyrone Brown – bass and William Roye, drums, the quartet’s set included the Gigi Gryce composition “Blue Lights” as well as two originals
“East” by bassist Tyrone Brown, and “Raveesh” by pianist Mike Michaels. These three tunes make up side one of their sole privately pressed LP release on the Alfa label. Philly Jazz Time Records is proud to make this recording available as a digital download, with permission from D.B. Shrier himself, shortly before his passing from this world....May his music live on!"
Avatar 2:27pm bigplanetnoise:

Such a fantastic show today. Perfect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Doug Schulkind:

@bigplanetnoise
So happy to do it. Almost nothing makes me happier.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Doug Schulkind:

I once played this song on the radio and then pretty much openly professed my love to (the singer) Genie Sherman. Then I got an email from Genie Sherman thanking me for me kind words.

Gulp.
Avatar 2:34pm bigplanetnoise:

Wow!
  2:34pm spodiodi:

that must have felt good :)
Avatar 2:34pm Gina Bacon:

Nice!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Doug Schulkind:

@spodiodi
It felt good in a shockingly embarrassed kind of way. Nevertheless, it has been nice to stay connected with Genie via FB.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar 2:46pm Gina Bacon:

This is such perfect rainy Sunday music, Doug!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Doug Schulkind:

@Gina Bacon
Love loves the rain.
Avatar 2:49pm Gina Bacon:

It does, indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Doug Schulkind:

Billy Harper on tenor sax here with Woody Shaw. Was also on that Gil Evans epic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm fred:

I can't stand the rain
It means people walking slowly, blocking the way with outsized umbrellas, when I'm trying to get through with just an unobstrusive WFMU cap to keep the acid rain from my eyes (and it is acidic when it gets through)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Doug Schulkind:

@fred
But the rain is so necessary, because without the rain, there would be no after the rain. (Or Coltrane's "After the Rain," now that I think of it.)
Avatar 2:55pm bigplanetnoise:

So great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm Doug Schulkind:

Can't you just feel the love dancing? Like rain drops.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Doug Schulkind:

I'm tossing one more log on the fire after this Woody Shaw gem...
Avatar 2:59pm coelacanth∅:

Doug you better ask the boss if you can go overtime
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Haha! I locked the door. He can go suck some noise-canceling headphones.
Avatar 3:01pm Gina Bacon:

Excellent!
  3:02pm chresti : phone:

Yay! In range!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm Doug Schulkind:

I have two things to say:

(1) The nickname of the bass player on this last track is "Lump."

(2) After the show, my wife and I are heading to a local ice center and we're going to meet friends and go curling. No really. First time ever. Mostly just drinking beer, I think.
  3:04pm chresti : phone:

We lost you driving through the Grapevine
Avatar 3:05pm bigplanetnoise:

A perfect afternoon, except for the curling part!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Doug Schulkind:

@chresti
Listen carefully!
Avatar 3:05pm coelacanth∅:

Doug that one's all you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm fred:

@Doug: You should have done the first ever curling remote in WFMU history!
Thanks anyway
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Doug Schulkind:

I'll report back on the curling project...
Avatar 3:05pm coelacanth∅:

oh,haha! you beat me to it!
Avatar 3:06pm Jeff Moore:

This is carrying me away!
Avatar 3:06pm Gina Bacon:

Thanks, Doug...that was really swell!
Avatar 3:06pm bigplanetnoise:

thanks for the fantastic show!
Avatar 3:07pm coelacanth∅:

...i dated someone who's former was known as "Lump".
i know nothing about him except he would be around 55-60 years old now, and probably a musician.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm fred:

BTW, wasn't "Curling Remote" the name of you high school band?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Doug Schulkind:

I'd like to think my show makes toes curl. Does that count?
Avatar 3:08pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Doug! great to be able to catch all of the show for once
take care
