3 musical events I'll never forget:
1. August 5: Because I retired from my work on August 1, my colleagues had arranged that I could do a radio show of one hour on 40upradio: 40upradio.nl...
2. September 25:
September 22 there was a very impressive article in my newspaper about Philip Kroonenberg, a Dutch singer songwriter who has made a complete album about the cancer of his wife (she survived). I searched for gigs and there still were tickets for the premiere of the album the following day! It was a concert I will never forget. For me it’s the album of the year and for the first time in my life I wrote a review that was published in Platenblad.
3. November 2:
"Arthur (or the rise and fall of the British empire)” should have been a radio play in 1969 by Ray Davies of the Kinks. That radio play never happened in 1969, but the songs were released on an excellent Kinks-LP with the same name.
50 years later the (new) radio play was broadcast on BBC Radio 4.
I was stuck to the radio for 75 minutes. Beautiful.

La Sonora Matancera that accompanied Celia on that song were always so often. Anyone that sang with them was made greater by their accompaniment @djsheilab

@WR: When I was a kid, my mom was briefly married to a guy who didn't believe in hot water, so it was cold showers every morning. It was a nice house, he was financially ok, just a quirk of his. It was in Honduras, so it wasn't horrible in terms of temperature, but it was still a drag. I'm in NOLA now, plenty of hot water, but no heat in an old Marigny apartment with 14-foot ceilings, so it gets chilly at night this time of year.

I've tried reading H. Bergson's Creative Evolution, but I've got to admit I don't understand most of it. I've read other difficult philosophical text, but Bergson stumps me.

  4:24pm Rick A.:

Mariano, I saw a Kubrick exhibition at LACMA many years ago. I'm not sure how many. If it's the same one you saw, it is stunning, representing a completely new direction museums can merge film into their exhibitions. If it is the same one, it's been traveling for awhile.

But . . I know that Jean Cocteau wrote the book Les Enfants Terribles . . But maybe Melville had the stronger hand in the film direction . . lol

I'll miss the last hour today. Jeroen Pauw, a TV host who has been closing the day on Dutch TV from 23:00-24:00 for 17 years, is hosting his last show in half an hour and for one time I prefer to use my eyes (TV) than my ears (radio).
Avatar 4:37pm fred:

Worthwhile use of your eyes and ears, Rob
  4:38pm William Main:

Cocteau has a cameo role in the film and I think that he did direct one scene. I'll have to give Creative Evolution another try.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm mariano:

@Rick A: I'm not sure how the two Kubrick shows would compare, but I really enjoyed the one in London. Had parts of sets, lots of costumes and props, a section on equipment and technique with lots of SK's notes and directions. Here are some pics of the things I gravitated towards: photos.app.goo.gl...

  5:24pm iiibeat:

Cocteau's fingerprints are all over that film though . . You should definitely try Bergson again . . I tell people that CE is a bridge from Darwin to Einstein . While he wrote about relativity through the veins of the humanities . Bergson had actual live debates with Einstein in how to explain Relativity. The book is alive . . It brings mind to itself.

I'll have to look into Voegelin . . What did he write about? I just don't think that Bergson is super difficult and I'm not saying that to try to sound smart or something stupid . . Though I might just vibe naturally with the information . . Kinda thing . . It isn't all mathematical and explained in formulas . . William James praised it noting it's accessibility . . Definitely easier than like . . Derrida!
