Holy Tire Iron  Side One   Options Work In Progress... Volume Ten  Holy Tire Iron  1994  Cassette  Holy Tire Iron was a 90s audio zine project by Reverend Raye, from West Somerville, Massachusetts. One would call the phone number and listen to the stories that others had left on the machine. It was not a 900 service, so if you were outside of the Boston area you had to pay for long distance phone charges. There was no advertising, the 'message changed every day,' and was made up of what callers called in. It was active for a number of years in the early-mid 1990s. The motto was "Inspiration is only a phone call away" and Raye called it free public media and added "Would you like fries with your art?"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Jan Turkenburg:

hahahaha, the delights of live radio. I remember phoning a technician, for something which turned out to be basic as a volume switch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Otis Fodder:

Ha ha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm Jan Turkenburg:

ehm Jan, you DID push the transmit button didn't you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Jan Turkenburg:

after 5 minutes or so...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Otis Fodder:

For me, it was the volume control. Twice. Two volume faders I had down. Silly Otis!

Avatar 3:05pm worldsworstrecords:

The Ricky Seagall album is awesome! I'be played a few tracks from it on my show, and ther's another on this wednesday!
Avatar 3:11pm Pussywillows_Cat-tails:

I'm still on a sugar high from that Danny D track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Otis Fodder:

I should've sent you my copy of Ricky's album years back. I tried, really I did. However, I did bring it to Incorrect Music in 2001 and played it. Ha.
  3:11pm Slanderbob:

Hi Otis. Long Time No Talk or Listen. Been a fan and FP listener since the Antenna Radio days. listening to you live in my car driving from Richmond back to Virginia Beach love you dude.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Otis Fodder:

Hey Hey SlanderBOB! Merry Christmas Rev! May your slack overflow. Love back!!
  3:14pm Slanderbob:

don't know what the theme is today. however if you could play poop ship destroyer by ween that would be lovely or something equally weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Otis Fodder:

You got it. Right after this tape, in 30min. Ween it is. I'll surprise ya, the room is covered in brown here. Maybe Poop... maybe ???

  3:28pm SLANDERBOB:

What is this? I'm laughing my ass off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Otis Fodder:

Crazy phone call line, where folks called in. One of those zine/tape projects. Used to trade with Rev Raye, hoping he finds this project being documented and reaches out. I added the tapes that I have to Discogs, www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi Otis! A collection of commercially produced phone machine messages would be right up my alley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Otis Fodder:

Hi Henry! I'll take a walk down that alley with ya anyday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Webhamster Henry:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Otis Fodder:

Yes! Love Steve's project. Thanks for sharing the link for others to dig in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Webhamster Henry:

I consider the accuplaylist chat to be a resource as much as a conversation - like the blogs of the early '00s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Otis Fodder:

Excellent source of information. I like it when the chat here takes on varied topics and shares links. Extensions of what I play or whole new threads.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Otis Fodder:

Sorta like these tapes. Continuing conversations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Webhamster Henry:

The sound quality on these tapes is pretty good too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Otis Fodder:

Yea for Maxell UR Normal 90min tapes.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Otis Fodder:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Otis Fodder:

Not I... I was in episode 1 (when she was in Reno by train). Now she is in North Carolina with a friend.

This is the best thing i've heard all year!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Otis Fodder:

Hi Skew! Oh, holy tire iron!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm ParUbi:

Uhhh, hi guys
  5:35pm Skew Siskin:

hi Otis, son
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm ParUbi:

So I missed the explanation of this. There was a line people could call and just leave whatever was on their mind? Was there a prompt?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm ParUbi:

Oh wait, I scrolled up. Sorry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Otis Fodder:

I remember calling the line myself in 1994 or 1995. I heard the previous recent messages left (was like 2 or 3 I think, memory hazy) but you did hear messages and then could leave your message. After they were compiled unedited into this audio zine. The Good, the bad and the really ugly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Otis Fodder:

It's like 'almost' as icky sometimes as the WFMU catalog tape "The Apology Line" which I want to play eventually in full on the show, but it's super dark.. if anyone also remembers the tape from the old Catalog of Curiosities. I added it to Discogs. Folks would call into a line and confess. A lot of creepy stuff. www.discogs.com...
Avatar 5:56pm Pussywillows_Cat-tails:

Happy Holidays everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Otis Fodder:

Happy Holidays. Hot Water Pipe!!!!!
Avatar 5:58pm Pussywillows_Cat-tails:

Corpus rules. Did he do Hot Water Pipe in Montreal?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Otis Fodder:

I have never seen the pipe live. Hope to one day. It's a hit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Otis Fodder:

Bye all now... and in the future.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm ParUbi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am WR:

Catching the start of your show after archive of Jan's 64 show. That Mottola tv theme recording is very interesting. Will be back later for more of your show.
