dukes of stratosphear - 25 o'clock EP (background)
Avatar 11:19am Tony Coulter:

Right you are, Kay!!

OK, no need to ask people to guess, then.....
Avatar 11:26am Kay:

Sorry, I couldn't wait for the invite.
  12:00pm Alessandro_Italy:

... waiting for the hiss ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm listener james from westwood:

How do, Tony and all!
Avatar 12:01pm Tony Coulter:

Howdy ho, Alessandro and James!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Yvang:

Hola Tony and James and Kay and all! Be careful: thelast time you played a Notre Dame tape, the church of the same name caught on fire...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi Tony - there's probably a good variety on today's show!
Avatar 12:04pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Yvang! Since Notre Dame is still standing, I decided I needed to play another cassette in the series.
Avatar 12:05pm Tony Coulter:

Hola hi hello, Henry!
Avatar 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

By the way, the compiler of this tape ("Graf Haufen") was still a teenager at the time (around 18 or so). He was a NDW prodigy....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm fred:

@Yvang: Now if what remains collapses, we know who's to blame
Avatar 12:11pm Tony Coulter:

Fred! Fred! (Yes, Wilma?)
  12:12pm Alessandro_Italy:

Tony, two C90 ??
Avatar 12:14pm Tony Coulter:

Yep! Or more precisely, both tapes are around 81 or 82 minutes.
Avatar 12:15pm holland oats:

tony tony tony!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm fred:

@Tony: I missed Charlene Darling's release party last week because of the transit strike (and laziness) I'm still bummed about that, I really like her record
Avatar 12:16pm Tony Coulter:

Haven't heard it yet! Would love to, though....
Avatar 12:17pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, Holland O!
Avatar 12:18pm Tony Coulter:

Die Garantien der Harmonie und Freiheit (on now) = Mogens Jacobsen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Cmurtha:

Hello everyone.
Avatar 12:22pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Cmurtha!
Avatar 12:24pm Tony Coulter:

The inner workings of the accuplaylist tell me that someone on FMU has played at least one track from this tape on their show. I'm going to guess it was Jason Elbogen.
Avatar 12:27pm holland oats:

vomitary heh
Avatar 12:28pm Tony Coulter:

The Cop Killers = Daniele Ciullini, Mark Phillips, & Vittore Baroni
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Cmurtha:

Does Ken award prizes for the person who plays the most never before played tracks? And if he does not, why not?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm fred:

@Tony: She even has a video: www.youtube.com...
Probably more fun for me as it features other people I know (like other members of her band Rose Mercie)
Avatar 12:30pm HollyRT:

Greetings, gang! Merry Merry
Avatar 12:30pm Tony Coulter:

@ Fred: Aha-- thanks!
Avatar 12:31pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Holly! Hairy Hissmess!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Yvang:

@Tony: The WFMU playlist search page gives credit to Chris M Thomas Storck and Faye for playing tracks from this cassette. wfmu.org...
Avatar 12:39pm Tony Coulter:

Ah -- thanks! I guess Jason let me down....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Yvang:

My guess is "Utilisation du Vieux Port" are (or is) from Marseille.
Avatar 12:55pm Tony Coulter:

You are right! And they're a great group too. Should really play one of their cassettes on Tape Hiss (if I haven't already?).
Avatar 12:55pm Tony Coulter:

What made you guess they're from Marseilles?
Avatar 12:57pm Tony Coulter:

(were) from Marseilles
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Yvang:

Le Vieux Port is the famous place in Marseille.
Avatar 12:59pm Tony Coulter:

Somebody's been listening to the Residents
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Cmurtha:

I've been getting mad resident's vibes from a few of these tracks. Made me look up what residents songs WFMU has played - surprisingly not as many as I'd have thought.
Avatar 1:11pm Tony Coulter:

I'm surprised at that too! I'd have guessed they've been played zillions of times
Avatar 1:20pm Tony Coulter:

5# Braccio (on now) is "better known" (ha!) as 5° Braccio
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Stanley:

Tony the Tiger!
Avatar 1:30pm Tony Coulter:

Stanley the Sloth! Happy Frosted Flakes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm fred:

What's wrong with "compiled"? Everything seems to be curated these days. thebaffler.com...
Avatar 1:33pm Tony Coulter:

Self-released tapes from 1988 (like this one) almost always sound better, sound-quality-wise, than tapes from 1983 (like today's first tape). I guess big leaps were made over those five years in the quality of cheap tape decks and cheap home-recording equipment.
Avatar 1:34pm Tony Coulter:

You're right, Fred. I did feel a bit pretentious saying "curated." It won't happen again.
Avatar 1:35pm Tony Coulter:

If I say it again, you can curate my face.
Avatar 1:35pm holland oats:

shoutout to the mailman y'alls!
Avatar 1:36pm Tony Coulter:

Mailmen were super essential to the cassette underground
Avatar 1:37pm Listening Out There:

Speaking of The Residents, someone on Instragram mentions that they've written a book called The Brick Eaters. Anyone read it?
Avatar 1:38pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, L.O.T.! Haven't heard of that book....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Cmurtha:

the last thing I saw was them doing God in Three Persons at the MOMA and me being mad I won't be in the city for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Cmurtha:

but i will have to look into said book
Avatar 1:42pm ynod:

wow! what a time to tune in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Rich in Washington:

I think the Resident, er... The Residents are going on the road in the US again shortly.
Avatar 1:42pm Tony Coulter:

These naughty vocals kind of sound like Nadine Bal to me. Can it be? Alain Neffe did master this tape.... (Nadine Bal and Alain Neffe = Bene Gesserit)
Avatar 1:43pm holland oats:

nsfw (glad i ain't at work)
Avatar 1:46pm Tony Coulter:

Rich! Hope Coco is doing well
Avatar 1:46pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, ynod!
Avatar 1:47pm Tony Coulter:

Milovan Srdenovic (on now) = Davy Walklett
Avatar 1:48pm Tony Coulter:

... and on this track he's joined by Robert Cox, his fellow member of Rimarimba
Avatar 2:14pm ynod:

more residents vibe
Avatar 2:15pm Tony Coulter:

Was just thinking the same thing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm fred:

Also some NSB (because of spoken part)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Yvang:

I want this as a preach for the reopening of Notre Dame.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm fred:

NSB4ND!
Avatar 2:29pm holland oats:

tony is that dukes of stratosphear in bg pic?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Cmurtha:

a deconstruction of the Dr.Who theme
Avatar 2:34pm Tony Coulter:

@ Holland O: It is!!
Avatar 2:35pm Tony Coulter:

FYI: The accuplaylist froze up on me for a bit there, so I didn't ID one of the tracks as it was playing -- the cut after the Det Wiehl. I will insert it in a second
Avatar 2:39pm Tony Coulter:

@ Fred: Who are NSB? Don't know 'em. Unless it's an acronym I'm not getting: like, maybe, The Not-Incredible String Band).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm fred:

@Tony: Nihilist Spasm Band. You might have heard about them, no-good youngsters from London, Ontario
Avatar 2:42pm Tony Coulter:

Oh yes -- of course! I'm a fan. Have even seem 'em live.
  2:44pm ParUbi:

Hey everyone!
Avatar 2:45pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, ParUbi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm fred:

I saw them four times, sadly at the last one they announced it would be the last one, at least overseas
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Cmurtha:

thanks for the most excellent hiss today
Avatar 2:52pm Tony Coulter:

You're welcome, Cmurtha!
Avatar 2:55pm Tony Coulter:

So, next week's freeform show falls on Christmas Eve day. Don't really want to play Christmas tunes, so I'm thinking of doing a U.K. folk special -- seems sort of holiday-appropriate, somehow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm fred:

Maybe if you guys can get Bernie president, NSB could take it as a sign to reconsider
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm David Dichelle:

Hello Tony and everyone - here's that onward link, if you like: wfmu.org...
Avatar 2:56pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Yvang:

Next week Brexit Show!
Avatar 2:59pm ynod:

thanx tony!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Yvang:

Two lovely cassettes today! Thanks, Tony!
Avatar 2:59pm holland oats:

an honor as always sir
Avatar 3:00pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks for showing up, everyone! See you next week, I hope....
