This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Avatar 7:17pm Flash Strap:

One of my favorite nuggets from the very good Leo label! trying so hard to assemble enough Leo releases to do a special show but it's not so easy
Avatar 7:19pm Flash Strap:

extremely cool library LP from the Lupus label – we heard a lot of Luciani in the various Flipper label shows but this is him in a very hip, laid-back mode. a treasure i say
Avatar 7:19pm Flash Strap:

i'm gonna do two from this, i'm feeling it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm chresti:

Lupus is an interesting name for a label.
Avatar 7:20pm Flash Strap:

after that, that's the end of the library grooves so enjoy em while you have em
Avatar 7:21pm Flash Strap:

haha i agree
Avatar 7:22pm hyde:

please explain the duck
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm ParUbi:

This would be a great song to just cruise main street at night with. You know, looking for clues.
Avatar 7:22pm Flash Strap:

i would love to hear more lupus releases, they all look so interesting: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 7:23pm hyde:

?
Avatar 7:23pm Flash Strap:

does a lovely duck such as this need an explanation?
Avatar 7:23pm Flash Strap:

looks kinda like a dodo
Avatar 7:24pm hyde:

it's not a dodo!
Avatar 7:24pm Flash Strap:

don't worry, an explanation awaits, but it will not truly satisfy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm ParUbi:

I think the duck explains everything, so it can't be explained. Is that right, @Flash Strap?
Avatar 7:24pm Franco Twinkie:

Damn! I went outside to blow all the leaves into the street and missed Slum Goddess. Oh well, I do my part to make sure our street looks like a slum.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm chresti:

This show is still cooking, tastes good half baked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm ParUbi:

It's better to be half-baked. When you're done, you're done.
  7:36pm Makks:

Hi from Geneva Evan and explorers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm chresti:

Unlike the creature featured on Mayuko's show@7:33
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm chresti:

The Cassowary^
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm ParUbi:

It's wise to be wary of the Cassowary!
Avatar 7:39pm hyde:

as ducks go, you have to love the Northern Shoveler. (would make a good band name). I think those sorts of ducks are shellfish diggers (hence the name, and just look at that bill) but i think as eating goes (apologies to anyone who doesn't like eating birds) that makes them, well, a little fishy
Avatar 7:40pm hyde:

@ParUbi i know theres at least one incident of a cassowary killing someone in the US in 2019 (really)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm ParUbi:

I'd love to see one in action!
Avatar 7:41pm Flash Strap:

Warm hello to you Makks!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm chresti:

hyde, Mayuko's show,( wfmu.org/playlists/shows/89994) was abuzz about that incident.
Avatar 7:44pm Flash Strap:

@chresti: i bet! seagulls are not for eating
Avatar 7:44pm hyde:

@chresti haha, i'm so out of the loop
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm melinda:

I've never heard of Folksy Nina, what a funny album title.
Avatar 7:47pm Flash Strap:

Nina is so good at performing songs, at the deepest level
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm chresti:

You know Mayuko is a keen bird observer...
Avatar 7:47pm Flash Strap:

@melinda: i know, it's so odd – like, most of her music is rooted pretty firmly in a folk tradition

cover: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 7:48pm hyde:

when the Maori et al found New Zealand, there were some 28 or so species of moa, one that was 12 feet tall. 900 years later, they were all gone. power to the cassowary.
Avatar 7:49pm Franco Twinkie:

Flash, do people ever tell you that you look like Jesus?
Avatar 7:49pm Flash Strap:

I'd die to see a Moa, god
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm chresti:

Right, they're like dinosaurs, the Cassowary.
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

@franco: it's happened but not usually – why, did you see an image of my visage
Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

love this Rouse track just to death
Avatar 7:53pm Franco Twinkie:

Yes.
Avatar 7:54pm Flash Strap:

haha i hope it was nice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm chresti:

Avatar 7:56pm Flash Strap:

great Donovan jazz cut, i love him in this mode
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm doctorjazz:

Charlie Rouse-not how I'm used to hearing him. But sounding mighty fine! Saw him in his days with Sphere.
Oh, and hi!
Avatar 7:58pm Franco Twinkie:

Well Flash, I was shocked. I was frying bacon this morning and I put the finished strips on a paper towel to absorb the grease, and when I lifted them off, there you were!
Avatar 7:58pm Flash Strap:

@chresti: nice company to keep a face in
Avatar 7:59pm Flash Strap:

Hi Doc! i love that Rouse LP, really gorgeous, a top Blue Note for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm fleep:

Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

There's not a lot of my visage out there to see, and the most christlike one is actually not me, tho many are fooled
Avatar 8:01pm Flash Strap:

under the bacon, not a great place for a face
Avatar 8:01pm Flash Strap:

this Frankiphone solo is just monstrously good
Avatar 8:02pm Franco Twinkie:

I know, Fleep. Only when I make French toast or pancakes, which is not that often.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Hello, Franco-phone! Hello, Flash Strap!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm chresti:

Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

Hello Doug! how's the sailing, cap'n?
Avatar 8:07pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 8:08pm Franco Twinkie:

Yes Chresti. It will be this years Christmas card.
Avatar 8:08pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 8:09pm Flash Strap:

guitar distortion here has such a sculptural sound, i feel like i could run into it and hurt myself
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Doug Schulkind:

The moon is ablaze, Admiral. The seas are glassy.
Avatar 8:11pm Flash Strap:

smooth sailing ahoy
Avatar 8:14pm Flash Strap:

Melvin Jackson = longtime bassist in the Eddie Harris Quartet & cowriter of some of his coolest compositions, inc. Silver Cycles. This is his incredible album as bandleader, where he does things with bass effects that can scarcely be believed & severely expands the cosmic funk of several classic E.H. compositions, inc. Bold & Black
Avatar 8:15pm Flash Strap:

gonna take a twofer from this one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm redkayak:

Good evening all!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Doug Schulkind:

God I love this Funky Skull album. So many brilliant players on this date.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm fleep:

Had to be in the 80s, he was already running off at the mouth, great energy. It was a jazz club with raked theatrical seating only about 5 rows deep, so everyone was right at the stage. Underneath a pier in Redondo Beach.
Avatar 8:22pm Flash Strap:

it's incredible! Pete Cosey on some tracks as well, and Phil Upchurch. & The Sound of Feeling on vocals
Avatar 8:22pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 8:27pm Flash Strap:

Hiya TDK!
Avatar 8:27pm Flash Strap:

always felt like this Sound Proofs cut had a real Eddie Harris groove energy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm chresti:

That was a well timed glitch!
Avatar 8:32pm Flash Strap:

was it? I have no idea what it sounded like, i only just noticed that we blipped off
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm chresti:

That's why, didn't notice until it went back
Avatar 8:35pm Flash Strap:

nice, not as nice as no glitch at all, but nice

Pretty flimsy alibi, TDK
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm ParUbi:

Someone put the "m" back in the Bli(m)p so it could float back to the Great Duck

Hey Evan, hey all
Avatar 8:48pm hyde:

I remember everything but Zapple
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm melinda:

I remember liking the ads for Riunite, the tune was catchy.
Avatar 8:54pm Franco Twinkie:

Boons Farm! Yes! I remember this third string band called Boons Farm. One night stoned out of my noggin seen those guys the night before Easter, and the lead singer did this little bit of proto-rap: "It matters on the streets but it doesn't matter in between the sheets" My fucked up sixteen year old brain went "Whoa deep."
Avatar 8:55pm Little Danny:

@Evan: Do you know Nora Dean's "Angle-Lala" recorded with the Tommy McCook Quintet? Same track as "Chant," but with a very beautiful femme vocal
Avatar 8:55pm Flash Strap:

Hi LD!
Avatar 8:56pm hyde:

@melinda Riunite on ice. that's nice.
Avatar 8:56pm Flash Strap:

i certainly do! love Nora Dean. Lotta variations on that riddim but hers is the one of ones
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm melinda:

There was a funny line in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore when Jodie Foster asks Tommy if he wants to get high on Ripple, being the bad influence. That was the first I'd heard of Ripple.

love a good dubbed out guitar track
Avatar 9:02pm hyde:

i'm still unsure i understand the duck
Avatar 9:04pm Flash Strap:

ultimately, it's hard to name and pick art for a show with no clear theme, but I insist on doing both anyway & so I'm pleased the duck has become an enigma
Avatar 9:05pm Flash Strap:

desperately attempting alchemical processes to get this duck from half-baked to fully baked

or even – not baked at all, unbaked, free-flying

A cold duck
Avatar 9:06pm hyde:

i love duck

No..Ripple!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm ParUbi:

Why do you sometimes hear sirens and bloopy noises over reggae and dub music?
Avatar 9:09pm Flash Strap:

the simple answer is it is actually part of the music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm ParUbi:

Will the DJ sometimes add them if they aren't already there?
Avatar 9:11pm northguineahills:

small change does...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm ParUbi:

NGH-- thank you! That's exactly why I was asking
Avatar 9:11pm TDK60:

I haven't heard Max R. in a spell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm chresti:

That is a beautiful song @Danny
Avatar 9:12pm Flash Strap:

@parUbi: for sure yeah. but in terms of the records minus live DJ stuff, they were just really into getting weird sound effects. but yeah live DJs add that stuff a lot
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm chresti:

Yes @ParUbi, Lee Perry adds sound effects
Avatar 9:14pm Flash Strap:

this one Romeo produced himself, I like how he handled it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm chresti:

and King Tubby, of course..
Avatar 9:15pm TDK60:

Love Romeo's voice too.
Avatar 9:20pm Flash Strap:
