Holy Tire Iron  Side One   Favoriting Work In Progress... Volume Nine  Holy Tire Iron  1994  Cassette  Holy Tire Iron was a 90s audio zine project by Reverend Raye, from West Somerville, Massachusetts. One would call the phone number and listen to the stories that others had left on the machine. It was not a 900 service, so if you were outside of the Boston area you had to pay for long distance phone charges. There was no advertising, the 'message changed every day,' and was made up of what callers called in. It was active for a number of years in the early-mid 1990s. The motto was "Inspiration is only a phone call away" and Raye called it free public media and added "Would you like fries with your art?"

@Jan: That sounds great! I love these old records. Though I'm conflicted about next week: The Ex and 75 Dollar Bill are playing, and I'd love to be there (especially for $75 bill, I've seen The Ex so much). Then again, I support the transit strike. Not convenient for me, but convenient and good are different things

Avatar 4:15pm
Otis Fodder:

It was be very very boring watching me cue up records and tapes. However, you would get to see Bunjee and we'd play with his toys and tunnel, maybe give him some treats. Live video with guests I could see totally on occasion or if there was an interesting enough show/theme.
Avatar 4:15pm
Linda Lee:

that's the deal. it has to be fun to look at too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm
fred:

It only works if you want it to be live. It's all your call. If some stuff takes more time, don't feel bound to stream the process. But if instant creation is part of a particular piece, by all means go for it. Also, if the process is important, go for it. Your call is what matters
Avatar 4:15pm

It would be cool to see the media being pulled out, like vinyl and stuff. Hold up album covers to go with tracks being played and running about the room grabbing stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm
fred:

Also, it's OK to try and fail. Trying and failing is how good things happen. So, try whatever sounds good
  4:21pm
Martinibomb:

@fred I feel like social media makes you make stuff fast. Putting something that took you months to make doesn't exactly work and plus u can get ripped off pretty ez. That feels bad if you put a bunch of time into something. So the whole thing leans toward work that is fast to make. I don't know how to solve these problems yet...

Mr Fab:

hey, all! MB, live video could be interesting, if some imagination is applied. There have been people live streaming their (mainly talk/political-type) shows for years, and i don't really see the point. Of course, i don't really see the point in political talk shows in general! But any new technology has potential, if clever people are involved.
  4:33pm
Martinibomb:

@Fab it's a marketing tool plain and simple
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm
fred:

@Martinibomb: Don't invest more than social media will give you, which is very little. Be there, but you don't need to spend much energy to do so, so don't. Do your own stuff instead. Feed the gram with throwaway things, but keep an eye on it, some might turn out better than you thought. Keep at what you feel is right, that's what matters, at least to me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm

@Fred I will say on the upside the idea of being able to sell directly to the end client and bypassing galleries... (which I sometimes think contribute to gentrification?) - appeals to me

@Fred, concerning social media. 100% spot on.
  4:41pm
spodiodi:

  4:41pm

I think with radio tho.. I kind of like that it's in my head sometimes and not a video. If that makes sense? Watching Otis listen to this album? That's not exactly compelling
  4:42pm
spodiodi:

<3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm
fred:

@Martinibomb: Totally agree about the hard issue of gentrification. But if do it right, it's not your issue. Seriously, it's not, it you're about your art and not about some investment. Only you knows, but I think you're on the right side
Avatar 4:44pm
Otis Fodder:

MB - That would be boring watching me right now for 4 hours. With guests over again, those shows would be fun to watch with 2-4 others over (+ often others came over and just hang on those past shows too).
Avatar 4:45pm
Linda Lee:

tho' watching Bunjee for 4 hours .. well ..
  4:46pm
Martinibomb:

My current POV has just changed to this. Social Meida/Streaming etc.. It's really great for short form/fast/Marketing etc.. Something like a 3 or 4hr DJ set - honestly that's boring. And does not work except on occasion. So there ya go.. maybe I'll do a video stream when I have guests over and things are interesting visually. A+ thanks everyone.
Avatar 4:48pm
Otis Fodder:

The Bunjee show would be the best thing ever. Hands down. Have someone come over and follow Bunjee for the 4 hours. 3 hours and 45 minutes each show will just be the Bunjee Sleepycam.

I feel Bunjee loves Magma. I believe.

I was a casual listener to Magma for years and fell in deep about 5 years ago. Listening in close and always morphing/changing. Really love and appreciate Magma.

"You hold in your hands one of the Great Books of our century fnord.
Some Great Books are recognized at once with a fusillade of critical
huzzahs and gonfolons, like Joyce’s Ulysses. Others appear almost furtively
and are only discovered 50 years later, like Moby Dick or Mendel’s great
essay on genetics. The Principia Discordia entered our space-time
continuum almost as unobtrusively as a cat-burglar creeping over a
windowsill."
